She scored As in Zulu, English, mathematics, life orienta- tion, life science, agriculture and physical science. Her success did not come over- night though, as started studying hard at the beginning of the year and even attended school on Sundays. “I am beyond excited as I have come very far to achieve this. I studied really hard, practised past examina- tion papers and went to school every- day, including weekends. Sandile Ngubane (18) from Edendale Technical High School obtained six distinctions with As in Zulu, English, mathematics, account- ing, economics and life orientation. Raised by his grandmother, Ngubane has always been a hard worker and a straight A student. “I have always been a hard work- er, but I worked even harder this year because I had a vision of becoming better”. He encouraged this year’s matric pupils to study hard from the begin- ning of the year. “Always aim for 100% because even if you do not get it, an A is always guaranteed”. He plans on studying BComm ac- counting at the University of KwaZulu Natal. Sthembele Dlamini (18) from Smero Secondary School scooped four As in Zulu, English, life orienta- tion and life sciences. Brought up in a family of five, with an unemployed mother, Dlamini worked hard, at- tending school from 7am to 9.30 pm. “From the beginning of the year, I told myself that I would work extra hard, even it meant asking the princi- pal for permission to use the school as a study room after hours”. Pass rate unimaginable>> Minister says the 2013 pass rate exceeded expectations

JOHANNESBURG—The 2013matric passrateexceededtheBasicEducationDepart-ment’s target by reaching78,2%,Minister

Angie Motshekga said in Johannesburg onMonday. In 2012 it was 73,9%, she said. Thedepartment had aimed for a 75% pass rate by2014.

There were 576 490 full-time and 130 646part-time matriculants for 2013.

Schools in poor communities performedbetter,with1 832 schools from the lower threequintilesachievingpass ratesof80%andhigh-er. Matrics from these schools got a total of78 407 bachelor passes, required for admis-sion to universities. “The notion that theschools from the more elite communities arepropping up the pass rate is therefore invalid,”Motshekga said. Every province, except theNorthern Cape, improved its pass rate com-pared to 2012. The Free Statewas the top per-formingprovince, increasing itspass rate from81,1% in2012 to 87,4% in2013. Theprovincewith the lowest pass ratewas theEasternCapewith 64,9%, up from 61,4% the previous year.

Theresults for theotherprovinces, for2012and 2013, were:• Western Cape: 82,8% and 85,1%;•Limpopo:66,9%and71,8%.Ithada48%passrate in 2009;• Northern Cape: 74,6% and 74,5%;• KwaZulu-Natal: 73,1% and 77,4%;• Mpumalanga: 70% and 77,6%;• Gauteng: 83,9% and 87%;• North West: 79,5% and 87,2%.

SIMPHIWE MKHIZE

A PROLONGED disagreementbetween government and thelabour federation, Cosatu, on

the youth wage subsidy which hasnow reincarnated as theEmployment Tax Incentive Act,appearstobefarfrombeingresolved.

The uncertainty of the stability ofpolitical dynamics in this countryseemstodeservemoreattentionthanyouth unemployment, at least in mypersonal assessment of things.

One cannot but applaud thecompromises the ANC–led govern-ment has had to engage in as it triestobendoverbackwardstoaccommo-date Cosatu’s rejection of the firstproposal to encourage employers,

especially in the private sector, toemploy young people who are facingunemployment and a doomed life ofdrug addiction, alcohol abuse andcrime.

Anyparentwhocanlookhisorherchild in the eyes and say “Cosatu iswrong in denying young people theirright to employment,” would readilyagree with me that it is a welcomedevelopment that government haspassedapieceof legislationcalledtheEmployment Tax Incentive Act of2013.

This act of parliament seeks toencourage employers to retainemployees on condition that they arebetween the ages of 18 to 24, regis-tered South African ID -carryingcitizens and have been employed onor before 1 October 2013 i.e. overthree months ago.

However, it is still true that olderemployeesmaystillbeshedif thenewyounger ones who were temporary

showdown would be expected be-tween Cosatu on the one hand andthe government/business commu-nity on the other hand.

At the end of the day, the reality ofthesituationisthatthevariousunionsaffiliated toCosatuarewhat theyare:organised labour representativesthat are trying hard to represent theinterests of theworkers, but employ-ers still have theupperhand indecid-ing who and when to hire or fire.

Inahealthiercountrywherepatri-otism matters, an ideal scenariowould have been to have a situationwhere the interests of older employ-ees are guaranteed by the employerclass,whilstweembracenew,young-er employees who are subsidised bygovernment. Inan ideal set–up, thereshould be nothing wrong withgovernment providing incentives tobusiness to create jobs for others.

It isagreatpitythatinSouthAfricathis matter is also a deeply political

and ideological one.PoliticalbecauseamoreradicalCosatustill-to-breaka-way group led by the National Unionof Metalworkers of South Africa(Numsa) is nowdistancing itself fromtherulingparty, and defyingCosatu’sone–union, one sector rule due to thecontinued suspension of the Cosatugeneral secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi.

Ideological because Cosatu is fora more socialist solution to creatingdecent jobs which would see sectorslike the manufacturing industryenjoying government intervention inthe interest of job creation and ameaningful better life for all.

Thanks to the Vavi saga, whichmay be a precipitating factor inchanging the country’s political land-scape, it seems that history is justwaiting to judge South African politi-cal, labour and business leadersharshly for failing to effectivelysupport the developmental stateunder the current ruling party.

The ANC’s sustained effort tomake a mixed economy work in thiscountry has had great potential since1994, but poor collaboration,lip-service and scanty practicalcontributionfromthesideofbusinessand labour circles have, to say theleast, let the nation down. Rightly orwrongly, political leadership prefer-ences are constantly unpredictablein this country. And now the biggestlabour federation in Africa is experi-encing unfamiliarcracksinleader-ship too. We also have a businesscommunity that remains intransi-gent and parasitic – if not racist andgreedy – and nothing much haschanged. Theintransigenceandself-ishness of strategic players may be anew struggle that we still need to en-gage in more vigorously than theformer anti-apartheid struggle.

Simphiwe Mkhize writes in hispersonal capacity.

Applauding the Employment Tax Incentive Act, but…

New year starts with love forthose living with disabilities

NOKULUNGA NGOBESE

>>[email protected] living with disabilities inSobantu started the year on a high noteafter Khulasakhe Community Serviceshosted a party and a workshop forthem on Monday. The workshop wasaimed at addressing challenges facedby people living with disabilities, and toalso thank God for giving them anotheropportunity to live in 2014. Ward committee member, Busi Mbokazi, saidthat it is common for people livingwith disabilities to be excluded from

community developmental projects.“We usually host community events, butweoften forgetthosewhoarelivingwith disabilities. As community leaders, it is our duty to include themin development projects, as theyalso have a voice in what is happening.“Living with a disability does not meanthat one is unable to do things andtherefore has to rely on a disabilitygrant”. Event organiser Toza Shabalalasaid that they wanted to show the residents that they care about them, irrespective of what they may think ofthemselves.

“I disagree with Numsa’s withdrawal of continued ANC support in thegeneral election that will be takingplace this year. All the whiningabout President Jacob Zuma’shome security upgrade is not necessary. A lesson should have beenlearnt when Nelson Mandela died.It was clear to everybody that theQunu village is not developed andit was a disgrace. We don’t wantthe same thing to happen with theNkandla village”.

Esther Shabalala

“I don’t understand why these talksand support withdrawals are happening at a time when all the focusis on the general elections. Thesethings should have happened earlier, not now. It’s bad timing for Numsato suspend it’s support for the ANCand I don’t support what they aredoing”.

Phumlani Khumalo

“I don’t know why Zuma’s securityupgrade is criticised so much.President Jacob Zuma is not thefirst president to have or build alavish house. The previouspresidents also owned beautifulhouses. The matter is beingexaggerated and it’s unfair to him”.

Nonhlanhla HlongwaneNquku:

“Numsa’s support withdrawal forthe ANC won’t make a differenceto me as an individual. I willcontinue voting for the ANC. Ithink they need to solve theirdifferences within themselves. What they are doing really makesno sense to me but as I have said,it doesn’t change anything”.

Mduduzi Mndaweni

THE National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa)has announced that it is withdrawing it’s support for the ANCahead of this year’s general elections and that it is suspending

it’s affiliation fee to Cosatu. Numsa has criticised the governing partyfor corruption for allowing President Jacob Zuma to use more thanR200 million to upgrade and expand his Nkandla homestead.NOMPENDULO NGUBANE spoke to locals to find out theirthoughts on the matter:

We hope that in 2014, those inpositionsofpowerinfootballusetheirpositions to advance the game.

Presently, the culture of servicingpeople is non–existent. Once peopleget into offices, they become “gods”and expect people to worship them.

The majority of us get into officesto loot the coffers of our organisa-tions. It is more about business classtravel, fivestarhotels, andfreeticketsto international matches.

Football associations and clubsmust serve the players.

Itwouldbeamajorachievementinthis country if training times arescheduled to suit players.

Personally, I cannot understandwhyPSLteamstrain in themornings. This compromises the education ofouryoungplayers.Generally, footballmatches are played in the afternoonsor at night.

The majority of schools and terti-ary institutions have lessons from8am to 3 pm. Football coaches havea responsibility to ensure that wehave educated footballers.

May 2014 also be a year whereyoung South African footballersbecome more ambitious and adven-

Our players should not spend thebest years of their lives in a place ofthe comfort. They say clinging to safeshores in your life is nothing morethan making a choice to remainimprisoned by your fears.

Courage is not theabsenceof fear.If our young boys and girls do not setthemselves higher goals, the WorldCup will remain just a dream.

United confirmsKomphela as coach

>> A press conferenceon Monday endedspeculation as theTeam of Choiceconfirmed SteveKomphela’s twoand ahalf year deal afterfiring Clinton Larsen fora string of bad results

IT’S now official.Steve Komphela is the new

Maritzburg United head coach. The former Free State Stars

mentor was officially announced onMonday.

Komphela has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Team ofChoice.

United’s chairman, FaroukKadodia, said Komphela’s mandatewassimpleandstraight forward.Thefirst priority will be to stabilise theteam, before taking it away from therelegation zone and later securing atop eight spot.

“Obviously, our current positionis our big worry. Komphela’s maintask is to change the team around,

stabilising it and gradually moving itup the log tablewith the aimof secur-ing a top eight spot,”said Kadodia.

Kadodia confirmed thatKhompelawillbealsobejoinedbyhisold and trusted right hand man,Durban born Mandla Ncikazi.

“He is coming in with one assist-ant, Ncikazi , and there will be noother changes on the technicalbench,” said Kadodia.

Kadodia also praisedKomphela’sexperience in the coaching industryand pointed out that his coming onboardwas like a “reunion” of the twoparties.

“Hewaspartofusmanyyearsagoaround2005,but nationaldutiestookhim away from us. Obviously he

comes with a wealth of experiencehavingbeenpartof the SouthAfricannational teams as well as coachingManning Rangers, Platinum Starsand lastly, he was in charge of FreeState Stars.

“The club believes that the acqui-sition of Stevewill be of value, both tothe leadership of its team and as agood brand ambassador forPietermaritzburg and themidlands.”he said.

United sacked the formerBloemfontein Celtic mentor, ClintonLarsen, last month following a stringof poor results in the nine gameswhen he was in charge.

Kime andMbanjwaboost DusiconfidenceDURBAN – 2014 Dusi CanoeMarathon title hopefuls Lance Kimeand Thulani Mbanjwa, got their yearoff to the perfect start last Sundaywhen they cantered to victory in thePopes Canoe Centre Alan GardinerMemorial Challenge.

This is a key Dusi seeding, racedin tough, desperately low conditionson the mid–uMngeni River from IbisPoint to Dip Tank.

Kime (Best 4 Healthcare/EuroSteel)andMbanjwa(Build it),alreadytalked upbymany as possible victorsof February’s iconic K2 Dusi show-down, took to thewater in thehopeofgetting further race practice andinvaluable time in the boat togetherunder their belts.

And, having finished well over aminute ahead of ComputershareChange a Life Academy’s secondplaced Lucas Mthalane and MmeliCele, they achieved just that.

“It’s always nice to win a race, especially with this one having beenaDusi seeding race,” explained a sat-isfied Kime.

“It would have been nice to havethetwoothercrewstherebutevenso,it’s always great to get the confidenceup.It’sgreattohavesomanypre–rac-es before Dusi and to be getting acouple of good results, especially atthis stage of our build up to Dusi, is

great.“The closer you get to Dusi the

moreyoureadintoresultsandthelastthing youwant is a few bad results toplay on yourmind. So these fewgoodperformanceswe’vehadinthesmall-er races I definitely thinkhave serveduswell andgivenour confidenceabitof a boost.”

After seeing Sbonelo Zondi (EuroSteel)andfill-inpartnerCarlFolschercharge to the frontof the fieldearlyonand lead the race until the NqumeniHill portage, Kime and Mbanjwaworked hard on the tough run andmanagedtoput inaheadof theirchal-lengers.

It was far from a done deal at thatstage though.

“(Sbonelo) and Carl caught usagain at Big Bend and we paddledtogetherrightupto theheadwatersofthe damwhere we had to deal with abig hyacinth blockage,” said Kime.

“We each took different lines onthe portage and it was there that wemanaged to get ahead of the othersand from then on, we held the leadacross the dam and down to the fin-ish,” he added.

While many of KZN’s rivers enjoynear full conditions, a dry fewdays inthe build up to the race produced anexceptionally lowwater level, addingto the day’s challenge.

“There was very little water. It isa race known for being quite low butthis year, the river was probably

lower than ever before and, with itbeing a doubles race, it really wastight and technical,” said Kime.

“We had to get out and push overthings a couple of times but it was agood outing for us nonetheless.Training together, which inawaythisrace was for us, is always far betterthan trainingonyour ownsowedefi-nitely still got a lot out of it! We’reget-ting better and better with time. We’ve gotten to know each other inthe boat really well and things havesteadily improved for us over time.

“A couple of good results, likewe’ve had recently, also really startgetting you thinking that maybe wecan actually do this [win Dusi]!”

The majority of Dusi 2014’s top

female contenders took to the waterin a K1, opening the doorway for theevergreen pairing of DebbieGermiquet and Carmen Donald totake the women’s spoils ahead ofJordan Peek and Brittany Petersen. With their Dusi partners all out oftown, itwasAbbyAdiewho ledhomeRobyn Kime and Hilary Bruss in thewomen’s K1 section whilst the pair-ing of Sboniso Shonzi andNokukhanya Shange claimed themixed doubles victory.

The Dusi Canoe Marathon 2014starts in Pietermaritzburg onThursday, 13 February and ends inDurban on Saturday, 15 February2014.More informationcanbe foundat www.dusi.co.za – Supplied.
