AREN’T those kids yousee in the car adverts soangelic? Little darlingsthat dress beautifully,have such perfect

manners and just love being witheach other for a blissful run in thecountry.

Except it’s not like that. Not inmy family at least.

They’re grubby, crude, can’t keeptheir feet off the upholstery, stufftoast crusts under the seats,chewing gum in the door bins and,not to put too fine a point on it,can’t stand the sight of each other.

Any combination of three isusually a recipe for disaster, so acar that can help reduce the tensionis something of a bonus. ThePeugeot 3008 is one of those cars.

People who feel the need topigeon-hole things into categoriescould call the classy-looking Pug a‘crossover’ vehicle.

In truth it’s a sporty SUV, people

carrier and luxury estate rolledtogether – with a hint of 4x4attitude to boot.

The 3008 is actually part of theFrench company’s 308 range,slotting between the hatchback andSW estate models but blessed withmore presence and practicality.

Some cars ooze feelgood factorfrom the second you step inside,and the Peugeot certainly fits thebill – the cabin is sensibly laid out,made from upmarket materials andbrimming with cup-holders andcubbies.

Thankfully it’s durable too, and

tough enough to cope with thecarnage wreaked on a twice dailybasis to and from school.

Space is more than adequate forfive and comfort is assured –including in the unpopular centrerear position – though the mostendearing feature is surprisinglythe boot.

Not only does it have a handysplit tailgate but the floor dividesthree ways to maximise stowage –there’s even a secret covered areafor valuables.

Fold down the rear seats andthere’s a whopping 1,604 litres ofload capacity.

What will also appeal to familiesare the likes of electronic stabilityas standard, automatic parkingbrake with hill assist, a maximumfive-star safety rating, air-con, rearparking sensors and Peugeot’sinnovative Grip Control.

The latter is an advanced tractionset-up that gives a front-wheel drive

vehicle almost as much off-roadability as a 4x4 and can beconfigured for conditions like mud,snow and sand.

And those wanting even more kitcan shell out £350 for a fighterjet-style head-up display thatprojects the car’s speed and otherinfo onto the windscreen for instantaccess.

The tested 3008 THP 156 model intop spec Exclusive trim featured a1.6-litre engine and automatictransmission with the option ofmanual shifts.

It was a treat to drive with amplepunch, a smooth ride, precisehandling and top notch soundinsulation. Just a shame that I wasonly able to return 29.7 mpg.

SIDE ORDER: The new Toyota Verso-S in profile

PUT an S on the end of acar’s name and it normallystands for Sport. ButToyota is breaking themould with its new Verso-S

– because this time it stands forsmall, spacious and smart.

The Verso-S is its new mini MPV,which prides itself on being smallon the outside but big on the inside.

The Tardis-like Verso-S is one ofthe smallest vehicles in the miniMPV segment, but it’s a fullfive-seater with a spaciousdouble-decker luggage area.

And to launch it the Japanese carmaker is offering special prices forcustomers who buy within the firstsix months of it going on sale onMarch 1.

The range starts with thesix-speed manual TR version, pricednormally at £14,645 but for sixmonths offered at the special priceof £13,995.

Step up to the T Spirit version –which means you also get 16-inchalloy wheels, a full lengthpanoramic glass roof, rear privacyglass and electric windows all round– and it will cost you £14,995 now,but £15,745 when the full price isintroduced.

Both models are available witheither a six-speed manual gearboxor a CVT automatic gearbox, whichcosts an additional £1,000. “Earlybuy” savings, however, are availablewhichever gearbox you opt for.

Measuring less than four metreslong the stylish Verso-S has a cute,

bug-like appearance from the front,with its slightly raised headlampslooking like eyes.

The wheels are tucked right intothe corners for excellentroad-holding and there is very littlebodywork extending beyond them,making it an ideal city car. Narrowpillars and large windows meangood all-round visibility.

All models have a 1.3-litre petrolengine which boasts diesel-likeeconomy, with manual versionsaveraging 51.4mpg and CVTversions 54.3mpg. For this reasondiesel versions will not be availablein the UK.

Inside there is a surprisingamount of both head and leg roomthanks to clever interior designwork. The front seats, for example,are of a new slim style which allowsplenty of knee room for rear seatpassengers.

The rear seatbacks can be loweredto form a completely flat, van-like

cargo area by simply pullingeasy-to-reach levers in the boot area.Loading is simple as the tailgate issensibly cut into the bumper so youhave no awkward lip.

And what you can’t get into theluggage area can probably beaccommodated in one of the 19storage compartments within thecar.

I liked the uncluttered dashboard

with its large, easy to readspeedometer and rev counter. Andin the centre console there is asix-inch full colour screen to operatethe new Toyota Touch multimediasystem – hence the “smart” categoryof the Verso-S’s name.

You can use the touch screen tooperate the radio, CD. MP3 playerand Bluetooth mobile phones, andfrom May owners can upgrade it to

incorporate a new navigation packoption.

All Verso-S models have a rearview camera to help with reversingand the image of what’s behind thecar appears on this same screenwhen reverse is engaged.

On the road this little car is agile,manoeuvrable and ideally suited tolife in the town or city. The electricpower steering is light and there is asmall turning circle so it makeseasy work of parking anywhere.

The Verso-S is no hot hatch butnor does it pretend to be with a0-62mph acceleration time of 13.3seconds for the manual and 13.7seconds for the CVT (top speed103mph and 106mph respectively).On the other hand its mid-rangeperformance is respectable.

The CVT version is perhaps alittle noisier as it builds to itscruising speed but once there thatnoise drops and the system adaptswell.
