  • THE ECODESIGN DIRECTIVE (2009/125/EU)

With the EcoDesign Directive, the European Community proposes the decrease of environmental impact and the promotion of sustainable development. This strategy guarantees both an adequate supply of energy and the achieving of really sustainable development. The Directives objectives go beyond simple provisions on energy efficiency, going so far as to consider the cost and impact of the whole life cycle of the product. Whether customers are end users or professionals, they will benefit not only from better products and a healthier environment, but also from the economic advantage, made possible through the rationalisation of energy resources. The EcoDesign Directive defines a general overview with which manufacturers must comply. Its aims are to increase energy efficiency and reduce the negative impact of their products on the environment during their whole life cycle.

    01. what is?

    02. Whom does it concern?

The EcoDesign Directive concerns both manufacturers and importers. Dealers and end users are therefore excluded from the field of applica-tion. Manufacturers are responsible for making products designed in such a way as to minimise their environmental impact. If the manufactu-rer cannot be identified, the importer becomes the person responsible for product conformity with regard to the EcoDesign Directive and the consequent implementing measures. In any case the importer must keep and make available the Declaration of Conformity and the technical documentation.

    03. What products? The EcoDesign Directive concerns a long list of finished products and, more precisely, in the world of electropumps it will involve the following families of products: electric motors designed for operating as normalise-d/integrated, circulators for heating with a wet rotor and some types of centrifugal pumps. The normalised/integrated electric motors affected are those from 0.75 to 375 KW, three-phase, 2-4-6 pole, surface motors, with supply voltage up to 1000 V and designed to operate in continuous duty (S1). Among DAB products, the categories of electropumps involved are centrifugal and/or self-priming surface pumps, normalised monobloc pumps, vertical pumps and in-line pumps. As regards the circulator family, the directive applies to wet rotor/integra-ted circulators for heating/conditioning/solar applications with powers up to 2500 W. In 2012 the EcoDesign Directive was integrated with the implementation of directive no. 547/2012, thanks to which the Minimum Efficiency Index (MEI) was introduced, a hydraulic efficiency index for pumps with axial intake, in-line pumps, multistage vertical pumps, and submerged pumps.

  • The energy efficiency of normalised electric motors is classified as IE1, IE2, IE3.These new energy classes introduced with the EcoDesign Directive have replaced the old Eff3, Eff2, Eff1 and Premium. In particular, the old class Eff3 corresponds to the lowest efficiency level and is no longer marketable. Class Eff2 corresponds to the new class IE1 and its production has been forbidden since June 2011. Instead, class Eff1, which is the highest of the old classification, corresponds to the new class IE2. Only motors of at least class IE2 can be produced in the four years from 16.06.2011 to 01.01.2015 (from 27 June 2014 also for motors used in special applications). As from 1 January 2015, for all electric motors with power from 7.5 kW (inclusive) to 375 kW, the new minimum level will be IE3 or IE2 if controlled by an inverter. The same minimum level will also be extended to electric motors with power from 0.75 to 5.5 kW as from 1 January 2017. The time schedule of circulators for heating with a wet rotor is much simpler. Their efficiency is measured with the Energy Efficiency Index, or EEI; the lower the EEI, the better the efficiency. So, as from 01.01.2013 it has no longer been possible to market circulators that do not have an Energy Efficiency Index of at least 0.27 or lower. Whereas, from 01.08.2015 the index must be 0.23 or lower. The European parliament then integrated the EcoDesign directive with the EU directive no. 547/2012 which introduces the Minimum Efficiency Index (MEI), an efficiency index for some types of centrifugal pumps marketed as a specific product or as a product integrated in more complex systems. The higher the MEI value, the better the sizing of the pump with respect to its performance and the lower the yearly energy consumption due to use of the pump. The upper limit of the MEI values is theoretically open, and depends only on physical and technological limits. As from 1 January 2013, all the pumps concerned have had to present an MEI value 0.10, while as from January 2015 pumps can no longer be sold that do not have a hydraulic efficiency index of MEI 0.40.

    THE CALENDAR

  • For some time now, at DAB we have been actively engaged in adapting our products to the EcoDesign directive; the steps taken so far to ensure a more and more ecocompatible range are listed below:

    DAB AND THE ECODESIGN DIRECTIVE

Since 2011 all our three-phase motors, and consequently all the

related pumps, comply with efficiency class IE2.

As from 1 January 2015, all our three-phase motors with power

from 7.5 kW (inclusive) to 375 kW, and consequently all the related

pumps, will comply with efficiency class IE3.

The whole range of electronic circulators with a wet rotor has been designed and developed to comply with the specifications required as from 2015 (EEI 0.23)

All pumps with axial intake, in-line pumps, multistage vertical pumps, and submerged pumps manufactured by DAB have been designed to have a hydraulic efficiency value MEI 0.40, in line with the deadline of 1 January 2015.

  • MARKING AND DOCUMENTATIONSince 2011, all data plates of DAB products affected by the EcoDesign Directive clearly and directly state the required efficiency indices.

All the printed technical and commercial documentation has already been updated with the references to the EcoDesign Directive and with the data that it requires.A portal has also been created on our website where all the documents linked to the product can be found (catalogues, commercial brochures and instruction manuals), always up to date.

    FAQ

The EcoDesign Directive requires that as from 1 January 2015 only pumps with a motor with energy efficiency IE3 can be put on the market, or with energy efficiency IE2 if fitted with an inverter, while pumps made with an IE2 motor and without an inverter can be sold only on the non-EEC market.

As from 1 January 2015, the acceptance parameter for the hydraulic efficiency of a pump is restricted and pumps with MEI < 0.4 can no longer be put on the market. Although compliance with this parameter is indispensable only for the European market, DAB has already adapted all the models concerned to supply more and more efficient pumps.

The EcoDesign Directive is not retroactive, so a distributor who bought pumps with efficiency class IE2 motors before 1 January 2015 can keep selling them after that date while stocks last.

To know whether you are buying a product that complies with the EcoDesign Directive, just consult the technical catalogue and the data plate, where you will find the information concerning the electric and hydraulic efficiency where required by the directive.

If you are comparing two wet rotor circulators, just refer to the Energy Efficiency Index: the lower the EEI, the better the efficiency. Since 2013, all electronic circulators manufactured by DAB have EEI 0.23. If you want to check the hydraulic efficiency of a pump for clean water, just look at the Minimum Efficiency Index; unlike the EEI, the higher the index, the greater the efficiency.

Can we keep making pumps with an IE2 motor with a power of 7.5 kW or greater after 1 January 2015?

Can we keep making pumps with MEI < 0.4 after 1 January 2015?

Can a distributor sell pumps with an IE2 motor after 1 January 2015 which have been in stock since before that date?

How do I know if a product complies with the EcoDesign Directive?

How can I tell whether one product is more efficient than another?
