While the Vikings didn’t regis- ter a win in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, they did play two conference games within a touchdown. It will be a new look Viking team with over 40 newcomers to the program. Led by quarterback transfer D’Abrie Smith, the newcomers come to the Harbor of Hospitality from over ten states and as far away as Illinois. • The contest between theVikings and the Pirates marks the first time these two teams have faced off against each other since 1995. ECSU and Hampton played each other 23 times during their time in the CIAA with the Pirates sporting a 5-15-4 record including four straight in the series. The Vikings last win in the series came back in 1991 as ECSU took the 23-21 win. The 1995 matchup was during the first year of Hampton’s membership in the MEAC. • There is some history between the two schools as Elizabeth City State used to be known as the Pirates, before their days in the CIAA. However, when the Vikings joined the conference, the CIAA decided that their couldn’t be two schools, so close together, known by the same mascot. So as a part of the admission into the conference, ECSU had to change their mascot and decid- ed to go with Vikings. • The Pirates will be in their first full season in the Big South Conference. Hampton had previous- ly been members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) from 1995-2018 and before that members with ECSU in the CIAA. As members of the Big South, Hampton will play schools such as Charleston Southern, Campbell, Monmouth, Gardner-Webb, and FCS power Kennesaw State. ECSU VIKINGS

Anthony Jones has distinguished himself as a major play-er in football—from being one of the winningest coaches in Alabama A&M University history to amassing accolades such as the SIAC Coach of the Year and SWAC Coach of the Year, to help the Redskins win the 1987 Super Bowl. After a remarkable career on the gridiron, Jones is now

Following his graduation from Wichita State University in 1984, the Wash-ington Redskins drafted Jones where he helped Washington win the 1987 Super Bowl. The San Diego Chargers picked Jones up during the 1988 season, but Jones was forced to retire after the 1989 season due to complications of a knee injury.JonescompletedhisfirstseasonservingasHeadCoachforElizabethCity

In 1991, Jones joined the staff at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland, where he served as the receivers/tight ends coach. In 1993, Coach Jeffries promoted Coach Jones to offensive coordina- tor at SCSU. In 1994, SCSU won the MEAC title and earned the Black College National Championship following a win over Gram-bling at the Heritage Bowl.
