PREFACE
This publication was undertaken in the spring of 1972 toincrease the listings and information on curricula in parks, recreation, leisure, and cultural services throughout the UnitedStates. Jointly undertaken by the American Association forHealth, Physical Education, and Recreation (AAHPER) and theNational Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), this publica-tion updates the 1969 inaugural Professional Preparation.Directory which listed 203 institutions. This edition identifiesprograms from 315 institutions.
Tho format has been enlarged to provide a quick reference toinstitutions. There are three listings one presents institutionsby state with mailing addtesses, department identification andheads, phone numbers, population (1970-71 school year), andavailable course options; the second presents institutions' byeducatiOnal level; and the third listing is by options. The institu-tions listed here responded to the direction to identify any areasof specialization they may have with "area of specialization de-fined as a definitive area of study with several specialized coursescomplementing a required core area of general psrldrecreationclasses."
Special thanks are due other allied associations and professionalgroups for their assistance in the wide 'distribution of thequestionnaire which served as the bails for the listingsthey in-clude: the American Association of Junior Colleges, AmericanSociety of Foresters, Outdoor Education ProjectAAHPER,SPRE-NRPA, National Community ,School Education Assoc's-tiOn, Association of College Unions-International, American
ACorrectional Association, American Camping Association,Discover America Travel Organization, and the Center of LeisureStudies (University of Oregon) which served is the base of opera-tion for the completion of this project.
Dr. Larry Neal served as Koject director and moved from theAAHPER headquarters to the University of Oregon midwaythrough the compilation of the information. He is responsiblefor the editing of this directory which is designed to be an infor-mational catalog and in no way reflects the quality of the degreeprograms listed or recognition of the accreditation status of theinstitutions cited. Dr. Donald Henkel of NRPA assisted with thisproject. The alphabetical listings of institutions by states, theinclusion of sublistings by degree-level course options and specialprogram options were done in response to many requests in thenational officers for such information. It is our conviction thatthis publication will serve student, faculty and practitioner in thefield equally well and is a "must" reference for those serving theeducational mods in the growing fields of parks, recreation, leisure, and cultural services.
