in Denpasar because other than being close, the room also had adequate facilities. “I found out a boarding room near the hospital because my wife has not well recovered from the C-section surgery,” said Suardana. But ac-cording to Suardana, her caesar-ean stitches would be opened on Tuesday.

With closeness of the mother to her babies, the breastfeeding for both babies would also be faster and easier.

Jorge Lorenzo reckons beating Casey Stoner to victory in the Portu-guese Grand Prix was an impossible task despite shadowing him for much of the race. Having lost ground to the rapid-starting Stoner on the first couple of laps, Lorenzo (Yamaha) began to haul the Australian in and finished the race tucked right in behind the Honda.

He says however that Stoner had too much energy and pace for him to ever mount a challenge, and that after a ‘nightmare’ weekend he was delighted with second.

“The bike was very good, a lot better in the race than in practice, but the only problem was Casey,” Lorenzo said.

“He was very strong, so for me it was impossible to beat him.

“We had a nightmare during the weekend so to be honest we didn’t even expect second, but we solved a lot of our problems [overnight before the race].

“I had a problem at the start because I banged the clutch, so that was losing me time on the straight for the first laps and Casey went.

“After that the bike worked well, but the problem was Casey had something more. At the end I didn’t have the en-ergy to pass, and my only opportunity was in the chicane but it was too risky. I wanted the points from second.”

The Lakers can wrap it up Tuesday night when the series shifts back to South-ern California for Game 5.

As told before, the fish market kiosks built by the Agency a few years ago seemed unused as sellers prefer to sell on the roadsides. Seller think govern-ment hasn’t been fair as they have let some sellers selling on the roadsides such as the road towards Celuk Agung Hotel. This condition cause social jeal-ousy between sellers. This roadside has been sellers place for years. Based on information compiled at Pengambengan on Sunday (May 6), Dewasa actually had started to build a modest house at another location, but it had not finished yet so that his family was unable to occupy it. Up to now, he still survived in a tent given by govern-ment set up near his house. Meanwhile, his newly built house actually lacked of materials and he had no money. On that account, he was currently forced to survive in a makeshift tent. In the tent, he lived along with his wife, children and parent-in-laws.

Unlike the other victims whose

house was not too badly eroded by the waves, some of them remained to live at location. Dewasa used to be called Amat admitted that his house wall required seven pieces of plaited bamboo. At the moment, he just had three pieces and even those pieces were obtained from the village help. If he could not get the remain-ing pieces, he would use tarpaulin to replace them. Among the 14 families becoming the victims of abrasion at Pengambengan, most have moved to new house, while some others still lived at the original location.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of Jem-brana Government, Suherman, told journalists that his party would make coordination with the Negara sub-district head related to the abrasion victims at Pengambengan village. Regarding the victims of abrasion at Candikusuma village, Melaya subdistrict, his party had established modest houses to be occupied tem-porarily. ,collapsed with one of them hitting a motorcycle driver, I Ketut Darmawan (31) from Wanayu, Bedulu while bringing his son I Made Adiwirawan (5) last Sunday (6/5) which got a light wound and rushed to Sanjiwani Hos-pital. Apparently the collapse can be seen it will happen since midnight as stated by a resident, Widianto Putra, who got his house fences also damaged. “At that time it was raining heavily and electricity got cut off. I saw outside, the electricity pole on the south was diagonal,” Widianto stated.

The diagonal pole was then reported to State Elec-tricity Company (PLN) by phone. Workers checked to location but then left again and the pole fell around 8.30 am local time. The incident cause attention and police secured the location. From the information received, the pole was actually a new pole placed a few months ago. Before, the pole was in the middle of a resident’s land next to a river. The heavy rain seemed to cause the soil unstable. According to PLN worker, Irwan, after he checked to location he then cut off the electricity cur-rent and reported to Police to close that part of the road. Secretary of the Badung Rev-enue Office, AA Arimayun, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (May 6) said if the Ocean Blue Pool Villa had had tax ar-rears since 2008. Since that time, the villa had never paid taxes to government. Although he did not mention the exact amount, Arim-ayun stated if based on the data owned by the Badung Revenue Office, the tax arrears were the highest in Badung. While based on information, the tax arrears of the Ocean Blue Pool Villa were touted to reach IDR 16 billion.

In the raid, General Manager of the Ocean Blue, Jin Hur Dna, ad-mitted that his party got financial difficulties so that he was unable to pay taxes. Likewise, his party admitted if he would submit a scheduling proposal of tax arrears settlement to government within this week.

In response to the matter, Ari-mayun confirmed that tax debt payment scheduling could not be granted by government haphaz-

Semarapura (Bali Post)—Nowadays, it seems very difficult to get a qual-

ity government project. For instance, few months after completed, the project has been damaged. It also happened to pavement project related to the restructuring of Semarapura town worked on by provincial government. Not more than two months after the handover, the pavement had been broken or in a mess. Before handover, many parts of the project were damaged requiring the Secretary of Klungkung Ketut Janapria to send a reprimand to implementer of the provincial project through the Agency of Re-gional Development (Bappeda) Klungkung.

As seen on Sunday (May 6), the pavement located on the T-junction in front of the former Parliament Hall of Klungkung (Jalan Gajah Mada) collapsed whereas it had just been accomplished re-cently. Similar damage could also be encountered at some other points. The pavement works seemed to have been installed haphazardly. As consequence, the paving blocks would easily come off when slightly affected by rain.

“Many parts of this pavement project indicate if the project was worked on carelessly. It cannot be passed through by vehicle, let alone be hit by rain splash. It will be easily detached,” criticized Chair-man of the Community Security and Order Forum of Klungkung, Sugiana. If such a condition was neglected, Sugiana worried it would become a habit of government harming the public. “Well, if this kind of incident (inferior project) happens, where should people go to complain?” he questioned.

MOSCOW — A demonstration by at least 20,000 people on the eve of Vladimir Putin’s inauguration as president turned into a battle with police Sunday after some protesters tried to split off from the approved venue and march to the Kremlin.

Club-wielding officers wearing helmets seized demonstrators and hauled them to police vehicles, dragging some by the hair, others by the neck. Several protesters were injured, including one man with blood dripping from his head down the left side of his face.

Three leaders of the opposition movement that gained new life over the winter were among those arrested: Sergei Udaltsov, Alexei Navalny and Boris Nemtsov.

More than 400 people were ar-rested, and Russia’s chief investiga-tive agency said it was considering filing criminal charges of inciting riots against some of them. Police reported that 12 riot police officers were injured.

unprecedented wave of protests that burst out after fraud-plagued parliamentary elections in Decem-ber had been marked by fastidious order. The crowds, sometimes as big as 100,000 or more, had care-fully kept to agreed-upon meeting-places and routes, even making a point of thanking police who stood guard in vast numbers, but did not interfere.

Sunday’s break in that pattern likely reflected a sense of anger and impotence among protesters upset that Putin was handily elected to a new term in the Kremlin despite their defiance. BEIJING - Blind Chinese rights activist Chen Guangcheng said on Monday he expects Beijing to let him and his family travel to the United States without fresh troubles, but re-mains unsure how long it will take for official approval to come through.

Chen, 40, who took shelter in the U.S. embassy for six days after escap-ing house arrest, said he was still in hospital undergoing checks, which had identified an intestinal problem as enteritis, or chronic inflammation from an apparent infection.

“I can’t move around much but I’m feeling better,” he said in a telephone call, sounding more relaxed than last week when he was

at the centre of a diplomatic crisis between the two superpowers just as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was visiting Beijing.

After leaving the embassy on Wednesday under a deal that foresaw him staying in China, Chen changed his mind and said he wanted to spend time in the United States to recuper-ate from the years of imprisonment and harassment that made him one of his country’s most recognized representatives of the “rights de-fence” movement campaigning for expanded civic freedoms.

China’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Chen could apply to study abroad, prompting an offer of a fellowship from New York Uni-versity, though it remained unclear

if China would cooperate in the dissident’s travel arrangements.

Chen said on Monday that Chinese authorities had no reason to try to block him and his wife and two chil-dren from going to the United States. “I still don’t know when I’ll leave, but it shouldn’t be too long,” he said.

“The government openly promised to respect my rights as a citizen, and I expect them to live up to that promise,” he added. “If they did try to frustrate my plans, then they’d be slapping their own face, and I don’t think they will do that.” Any more ructions with Beijing over Chen’s future could embolden U.S. critics of President Barack Obama’s China policies as the United States gears up for presidential elections in November.

“We are reconstructing the past to better fore-cast the future, because we need to know what’s coming in order to adequately prepare for it,” said Cindy Looy, a biologist from UC Berkeley who is leading the project.

Located 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of San Francisco, Clear Lake is one of North America’s oldest lakes. Through fossilized plants and animals and chemical records, its sediments preserve a long history of climate and ecosystem changes — up to half a million years’ worth. The sediments that Looy’s team will study were deposited over about 130,000 years.

An important event recorded by these sedi-ments happened about 12,000 years ago, when the Earth’s last major set of glaciers began to melt. The rate of global warming then was almost as fast as the rate scientists record today, Looy said in a statement. Looking at the step-by-step ecosystem changes preserved in these sediments will help researchers fine-tune the predictive models they’re developing today.

Another important interval the team will study happened during an earlier glacial cycle, between 130,000 and 113,000 years ago. During this period, the area around Clear Lake grew even warmer than it is today. Changes in the lake’s flora and fauna during this time may look like what northern Californians can expect in the future, Looy said.

“There are indications from ice cores and ocean drilling cores that the beginning of the previous interglacial may have been warmer than it is now, which is where it becomes interesting,” Looy said. “We know what the Earth is like at today’s temperature, but a lot of people are trying to predict what will happen if the Earth warms 2-4 degrees Fahrenheit (1-2 degrees Celsius), or even more.”

WASHINGTON - Monica Soltes was excited 10 years ago to leave Merrill Lynch and start her own business as an independent financial planner in San Diego. After she fell off a porch at her cousin’s cottage and broke her elbow, her dreams unraveled. Following multiple surgeries that confined her to bed, Soltes was di-agnosed with a hormonal disease that is weakening her bones. She also ran out of money, signed up for disability benefits and has been unable to work again.

The 47-year-old from Michi-gan is among the 8.7 million American workers on the U.S. disability rolls, an important part of the social safety net. Since the recession began in 2007, she has been joined by a record number of people seeking disability ben-efits, raising questions about the program’s solvency and casting a pall over future prospects for U.S. economic growth.

Applicants soared to a record high of 2.94 million in 2010, and have held above 18 per 1,000 workers in the past three years - a far higher rate than in previous recessions. “There are serious concerns that this increase in dis-ability benefits is a type of ‘hidden

unemployment,’” said Richard Burkhauser, a professor of eco-nomics at Cornell University.

Even though only 35 percent of applicants are awarded disability, those receiving disability benefits now account for 5.6 percent of the working age population, up from about 4.5 percent in 2007. At this rate of growth, Burkhauser esti-mates that total would reach over 7 percent by 2018.

The problem is those on dis-ability rarely return to work, re-ducing the overall size of the labor

force and weakening the U.S. economy’s growth prospects. Ris-ing gross domestic product (GDP) depends upon a growing work-force and rising productivity.

Since the recession began, the share of Americans actively look-ing for work, known as the labor participation rate, has fallen to 63.6 percent from 66 percent in 2007.

Some people give up looking for work temporarily, but the size of the decline has perplexed econ-omists and disability is clearly a factor.

The domestic debut for the big-budget, effects-filled movie from Disney’s Marvel studios sped past last summer’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows - Part 2,” which opened with $169.2 million in its first weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. In March, “The Hun-ger Games” opened with $152.5 million, the fourth largest opening in box office history.

“The Avengers,” which reunites Marvel comic heroes Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and Black Widow, has collected $641.8 million since it opened in international mar-kets on April 25. “We keep thinking we have a sense of what this movie can do, or will do, and every time we get a report it does even better,” said Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice-president of distribution. “This is very satisfying, to say the least.”

Disney’s aggressive marketing, which included promotions aimed at women that included sending stars to “The View” daytime talk show,

resulted in women making up 40 percent of the audience for the action film, according to Disney’s survey. Half the audience was also over 25 years of age, the studio also said.

Winner of the past two weekends, Sony’s romantic comedy “Think Like a Man,” slipped to second place with $8 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters, ac-cording to Hollywood.com.

“Hunger Games,” from Lions Gate Entertainment, took the No. 3 spot in its seventh week in theaters, with $5.7 million, and has collected $380.7 million in U.S. and Cana-dian theaters during its run.

Warner Brothers’ “The Lucky One” landed in fourth place with $5.5 million, and the animated film “The Pirates! Band of Misfits” from Sony finished in fifth place with $5.4 million.

The undisputed success of “Avengers” brought Disney the type of redemption that Hollywood loves to put on screen. In March, Disney

released the expensive sci-fi adven-ture film “John Carter,” one of the biggest flops in box office history. The company said it expects to lose up to $200 million on that film.

“Avengers” is the first Marvel

film released by Disney since the media and theme park giant pur-chased Marvel Entertainment Inc in 2009 for $4 billion, a move to expand its appeal to boys with a stable of superheroes.

Disney would not say whether it plans to make a sequel. Sequels to films based on the Thor and Iron Man characters are scheduled for next year and Captain America in 2014.

Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — “Neighborhood Watch” will now be known as just “The Watch.” Fox said Friday that the name of the film starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn as suburban neighborhood watch volunteers who uncover an extraterrestrial plot was changed in light of the shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Florida.

“As the subject matter of this alien invasion comedy bears no relation whatsoever to the recent tragic events

in Florida, the studio altered the title to avoid any accidental or unintended misimpression that it might,” the studio said in a statement.

Fox previously pulled early promo-tional materials for the movie because of the Trayvon Martin case.

The unarmed, 17-year-old Martin was fatally shot in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman on Feb. 26, causing a na-tional controversy. “The Watch” is set for release July 27.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — George Lindsey, who spent nearly 30 years as the grinning Goober on “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Hee Haw,” has died. He was 83. A press release from Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville said Lindsay died early Sunday morning after a brief illness. Funeral arrange-ments were still being made.

Lindsey was the beanie-wearing Goober on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1964 to 1968 and its successor, “Mayberry RFD,” from 1968 to 1971. He played the same jovial character — a service station attendant — on “Hee Haw” from 1971 until it went out of production in 1993.

“America has grown up with me,” Lindsey said in an Associated Press interview in 1985. “Goober is every man; everyone finds some-thing to like about ol’ Goober.” He joined “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1964 when Jim Nabors, portraying Gomer Pyle, left the program. Goo-ber Pyle, who had been mentioned on the show as Gomer’s cousin, thus replaced him.

“At that time, we were the best acting en-semble on TV. The scripts were terrific. Andy is the best script constructionist I’ve ever been involved with. And you have to lift your acting level up to his; he’s awfully good.”

In a statement released through the funeral

home, Griffith said, “George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit. In recent years, we spoke often by telephone. Our last conversation was a few days ago ... Clinton told a town hall meeting in the eastern city of Kolkata that there’s an adequate supply in the market for India to find alternative sources of oil. Clinton noted India has taken some steps to reduce its imports from Iran but she says the U.S. wants to see more.

“If there weren’t an adequate supply ... we would understand, but we believe that there is adequate supply,” she said. India could face U.S. sanctions by the end of June if the Obama administration deter-mines it has not made significant cuts in imports under a law aimed at squeezing Iran’s petroleum industry to press the country to prove its nuclear program is peaceful.

India, with a growth rate of about 7 percent, has a nearly insa-tiable need for oil. About 9 percent of its oil imports are from Iran, though officials say it has reduced

its dependency on Iranian oil in recent months, “We appreciate what has been done and, of course, we want to keep the pressure on Iran,” Clinton said.

However, India remains depen-dent on the imports, and Iran is its second largest oil supplier after Saudi Arabia. With international sanctions making it difficult to find banks willing to handle Iranian oil payments, India and Iran reached an agreement earlier this year that would allow India to pay for about 45 percent the purchases in rupees. Iran would then use the Indian cur-rency to buy goods from India.

Clinton said the U.S. remained focused on putting global pressure on Iran. “We believe, at this mo-ment in time, the principle threat is a nuclear-armed Iran,” she said. “We need India to be part of the international effort.”

Clinton was also meeting Mon-day with West Bengal Chief Minis-ter Mamata Banerjee, a key partner of India’s ruling coalition who has stymied government efforts to lift restrictions on foreign-owned in-vestments in the country. Clinton was expected to talk with Banerjee about allowing multi-brand retail-ers such as Wal-Mart to enter the market.

Last year, India’s Cabinet had to rescind a decision to open up its market to major foreign retailers after Banerjee balked at the move, saying it would crush small domes-tic retailers.

“I will certainly raise the United States’ desire to try to open the market to multi-brand retailers,” Clinton told the audience at the town hall. “I think there are a lot of benefits that may not be imme-diately perceived.”

TEL AVIV - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday said he supported holding an early general election in four months’ time, a ballot polls say could strengthen his hand as Israel confronts Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The next national vote was not due until October 2013, but new legislation that might force ultra-Orthodox Jews to serve in the military and an upcoming budget debate have threatened to unravel a govern-ing coalition of religious and nationalist parties once seen as one of the most stable in Israel’s history.

“It is preferable to have a short election campaign of four months that will swiftly return stability to the political ranks,” Netanyahu said in a speech to a packed convention of his rightist Likud party. He said he wanted to avoid pressure from coalition partners who were beginning to destabilize the government. He did not specify a date, but a party official earlier said September 4 was the probable date for the ballot.

Likud has submitted a bill to dissolve Israel’s parliament so that an early election may be held. Parliament had been expected to start debating the measure on Monday, but that plan seemed uncertain after a senior coalition partner urged a procedural postponement.

“With the start of the government’s fourth year we have seen many signs that the stability has begun to waver and political instability always brings extortion (and) populism which harm security, the economy and society. I will not allow a campaign of a year and a half that will harm the country,” Netanyahu said.

A Netanyahu victory two months before the U.S. election would give him leverage over Barack Obama on the Iranian and Palestinian issues while the U.S. president is still engaged in his own campaign and wary of alienating pro-Israeli voters.

Netanyahu and Obama have had a thorny relationship and the right-wing Israeli leader has come under pressure from Washington not to take unilateral military action against Iranian nuclear facilities suspected of being part of a project to produce nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear program is purely civilian. Israel is believed to be the Middle East’s only nuclear-armed power. Opinion polls show Likud will easily come out on top of the national ballot, giving Netanyahu a renewed mandate to tackle what he has described as the most important challenge facing his country - the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran. On the subject of Iran, Netanyahu told his party he would not “ease the pressure until the threat is truly removed.”

SINGAPORE — Oil dived below $97 a barrel Monday in Asia, bring-ing its fall over three trading days to about 8 percent, as a slowdown in U.S. hiring and election results in Europe dimmed expectations of stronger economic growth.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down $1.87 to $96.62 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract plunged $4.05 to settle at $98.49 in New York on Friday. Brent crude for June delivery was down $1.81 at $111.37 per barrel in London.

Crude has slumped about 8 percent over the last three trading sessions amid signs oil demand may be weaker than previously expected.

The Energy Department said last week that U.S. crude inventories have risen to the highest since 1990. That was followed by the Labor Department on Friday announcing the economy added 115,000 jobs in April, far fewer than the 165,000 analysts were expecting.

“Economic indicators both in the U.S. and Europe are taking on a more negative appearance,” energy trader and consultant Ritterbusch and As-sociates said in a report.

Investors are also concerned political upheaval in Europe could derail government austerity measures and worsen the region’s debt problems.

French Socialist Francois Hollande, who promised during the presi-dential election campaign to boost spending, defeated President Nicolas Sarkozy. In Greece, the pro-austerity coalition parties suffered a sharp decline in support, which might undermine efforts to keep Greece in the euro currency bloc.

Oil traders often look to global equities as a measure of overall investor sentiment, and stock markets in Asia were down sharply Monday.

In other energy trading, heating oil was down 3 cents at $2.98 per gallon and gasoline futures fell 2 cents to $2.96 per gallon. Natural gas was up 1.5 cents at $2.29 per 1,000 cubic feet.

BEIJING - China sales by Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp and its two local joint-venture partners rose 68 percent in April from a year earlier to about 81,700 vehicles, according to a company spokesman.

For the first four months of the year, the Japanese auto maker sold a total of about 293,200 vehicles, a 14.3 percent increase from the same period last year, said the spokesman, Takanori Yokoi.

Yokoi said the large year-on-year jump in April sales was due chiefly to the fact that sales during April last year were comparatively low because of the massive earthquake on March 11. The earthquake and tsunami paralyzed production of key components and affected Toyota’s vehicle production around the world, including China.

Still, Toyota’s sales momentum was “fairly strong” so far this year, said Yokoi. Because the company’s sales performance was so bad last year due to the impact from the earthquake Toyota “should be able to post double-digit sales growth at least for the next several months,” the Beijing-based spokesman said.

“If things go as normally as we expect, we should be able to meet our sales goal” of selling one million cars this year, said Yokoi.

Toyota’s China sales last year totaled about 883,400 vehicles, a 4.4 percent increase from 2010, reflecting in part the general slowdown of automobile sales in China last year.

After rapid growth in 2009 and 2010, China’s auto market as a whole slowed considerably last year as sales of smaller-engine cars and commercial vehicles stalled after the government ended some incentives for car buyers.

Various industry forecasts point to overall vehicle sales this year growing about 5-10 percent from 2011.

Toyota would have to grow sales by about 13 percent this year to meet its goal of selling one million vehicles.

Umar Patek is accused of being a central figure in the 2002 attacks on two nightclubs in Indonesia’s Bali, which killed many Western tourists including 88 Australians.

In an emotional appearance at his trial, Patek, who says he was only a bit player in the attacks, claimed he had questioned the decision to target Bali and expressed regret.

“I am taking this opportunity to seek forgiveness from the victims, their families and whoever suffered losses,” including the Indonesian government, the 45-year-old said in a voice cracking with emotion.

“I was very sad and regret the incident happened, because I was against it from the start. I never agreed with their methods,” Patek told the West Jakarta district court.

Patek, who was arrested in the same Pakistani town where Osama

bin Laden was killed just months before the Al-Qaeda chief’s death, said he had “no idea” that nightclubs specifically would be targeted.

Patek -- who could face the death sentence if convicted -- said the plans for the attacks on October 12, 2002, were drawn up at the home of Dulmatin, another Bali cohort, who was killed by police.

“It was mentioned that they will bomb a place with many Western-ers as retaliation to the killing of Muslims in Palestine,” Patek testi-fied, speaking calmly and gesturing with his hands.

When the idea of attacking Bali was brought up, Patek claimed he raised objections.

“I questioned why in Bali? Jihad should be carried out in Palestine instead. But they said they did not know how to get to Palestine,” he

said, adding “Dulmatin told me not to think so hard, just help.”

Patek allegedly used simple house-hold tools including a rice ladle to assemble the Bali bombs, which ac-cording to the court indictment were housed in ordinary filing cabinets.

“The defendant filled up the black powder in four filing cabinets, in the meantime, Dulmatin made the bomb’s electronic circuit,” the indictment said.

With bombmaker Azahari Husin, a Malaysian killed at a hideout on Java island, Patek assembled the detonating cord and then loaded the filing cabinets into a car, the document added.

But Patek said Monday his role went no further than mixing the explosives.

“I helped to mix the chemicals,” he confessed. “Azahari assembled

the bombs.”“They loaded explosives onto the

car while I stayed inside my room and read the Koran,” he added.

Patek is accused of being the expert bombmaker of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a Southeast Asian terror network linked to Al-Qaeda. He is also accused of attacking churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve in 2000.

He was arrested in January last year in the Pakistani town of Abbot-tabad, where US commandos later killed bin Laden.

During the trial, evidence emerged that bin Laden gave JI $30,000 to wage jihad in the region and Patek might have met him when he was in Abbottabad, a claim Patek has repeatedly denied.

“I don’t know about the source of funds,” he said Monday. “In the

name of God, I have never met the man named Osama bin Laden,” he added.

A special agent with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation Frank Pellegrino testified in April that Patek was widely-known as an expert bombmaker.

According to Pellegrino, a wit-ness interviewed by the FBI in the Philippines reported Patek as saying he “was interested in going back to Pakistan and Afghanistan and work-ing with Osama bin Laden”.

Patek was once the most-wanted terror suspect in Indonesia and spent nearly a decade on the run with a $1 million bounty on his head by the United States under its rewards for justice programme.

Prosecutors are seeking the death sentence for Patek on charges that include premeditated murder.

JAKARTA - Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said he has officially re-sponded to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)`s analy-sis of palm oil used as a feedstock in bio-fuel production.

“In its analysis, the EPA has ig-nored the Indonesian government`s commitment to protecting the environment and reducing green-house gas emissions,” the minister said in the official response, a copy of which was made available to ANTARA on Sunday.

At the Copenhagen meeting held in 2009, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono stated his commitment to reducing green-

house gas emissions by 26 per-cent in 2020 and set himself the target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 41 percent through international cooperation, the minister said.

In addition, the Indonesian government also has issued a moratorium on the issuance of new permits for utilization of primary natural forest and peat land under presidential instruction number 10 of 2011.

In its greenhouse gas analysis of oil palm issued in December 2011, the EPA said that palm oil-based bio-fuel could cut greenhouse emissions by only 17 percent, falling short of the 20 percent threshold, to be included in US

renewable-fuel standards.The trade minister submitted

the official response to the US government on April 26, 2012, a day ahead of the deadline set by the EPA.

In his official response, the trade minister also said in calcu-lating greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA used assumption data rather than real data and therefore, the results of its analysis did not reflect the real conditions.

Quoting the results of a study made by the Food Policy Research Institute in 2010, he said oil palm proved more efficient than any other vegetable oil producing plants, such as soybean and sun-flower beans.

OVERVIEW:If there’s just one dish that people remember after a

visit to Bali, it’s this famous delicacy, usually known by its Indonesian name, Babi Guling.

INGREDIENTS:1 suckling pig, weighing about 6-8kg1½ tbsp salt200 shallots, peeled and sliced100 gr cloves garlic, peeled and sliced50 gr ginger, peeled & chopped300 gr candlenuts, chopped350 gr fresh turmeric, peeled &chopped3 tbsp coriander seeds, crushed80 gr laos, finely chopped120 gr bird’s-eye chilies, sliced10 stalks lemon grass, finely sliced1 tbsp black peppercorns, crushed1 tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted5 fragrant lime leaves, finely shredded2 salam leaves2½ tbsp oil4 tbsp turmeric water

PREPARATION:Ensure inside of suckling pig is completely cleaned

out. Season inside and outside with salt. Combine all other ingredients, except turmeric water, and mix thoroughly. Fill inside of suckling with mixture, close belly with string or thin satay skewer. Rub the outside of the pig with turmeric water until the skin is shiny yellow.

Place suckling pig on roasting rack and roast in hot oven (220°C / 425°F) for approximately 1 hour. Rest for 10 minutes in warm place before serving. When serving, first remove the crisp skin with a strong carving knife, then loosen meat from the bones and cut into even dice or slices. Place a heaped tablespoon of stuffing on each serving plate, and then top with meat and skin. Traditionally this dish is eaten with Jukut Nangka Mekuah and steamed rice.

Helpful hint: If you have a large barbeque with rotisserie or constantly turning spit, you can cook the pig over charcoal for an authentic Balinese flavor.

Complaints about the wastes were also delivered by visitors and fishermen of Yeh Gangga Beach, Tabanan. The beach used for landing base by fishermen had become a regu-lar target of junk waste. In many instances, the wastes disrupted the activities of local fishermen. Due to a large number of wastes, fishermen were unable to park their boat con-veniently. Hence, those piles of waste were then cleaned up by fishermen and sometime also collected by scavengers.

DENPASAR - At least 573 for-eign students from 35 countries are studying in the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, accord-ing to an official.

“Most of the foreign students in ISI have come from Japan. The number of Japanese foreign stu-dents has reached 207. They learn about percussion and Balinese dances,” ISI Denpasar Rector I Wayan Rai said here on Monday.

Foreign students in ISI are generally self-financed, but the Indonesian government also pro-vides scholarships every year. At least 58 foreign students received scholarships in 2012.

“Most of them take short course programmes. They study for two to four semesters and return to their

home countries after finishing their studies,” Wayan noted.

“In their country, they expand their creativity by doing things such mixing Balinese dancing and gamelan orchestra with Western music,” he added.

“They are also opening schools and teaching Balinese dance to people in their countries,” Wayan said.

ISI Denpasar is a college of art accredited by the Ministry of Na-tional Education. It is under, and directly responsible to, the Minis-ter of National Education.

Local devotees perform a mass sacred cultural show called Siat Sampian or Sam-pian War. This attraction is a war performed in a playing atmosphere. This war was carried out by women and men who have been in a trance designated by local deities or God Almighty through an initia-tion ceremony. Participants of the war will attack one another regard-less of the opponents and friends. Such an attraction is held once a year, right three days after the ritual pinnacle falling on full moon of the eleventh month in Balinese calendar (around May).

Local people divide this attrac-tion into two kinds, namely the one performed by women’s group is called Jro Permas, while the men’s group is called Parekan. Jro Permas has approximately 35 members, while Parekan group has hundreds of people.

They will chase each other, hit each other or pull to one side. Such an attraction is ac-companied by gamelan orchestra in a very dynamic rhythm.

If each Jro Premas has managed to beat another player up to three times, then the attraction can be ended. All the sampian weapons used will be returned to its original place.

The next battle is the turn of

men’s group involving huge number of participants. At first, they move by imitating the movement of wave as practiced by Jro Permas. After-ward, they run around the temple for three times clockwise and then say prayers together.

Although the players already get possessed by the spirit of struggle, the Siat Sampian may not yet be-gin. This Parekan group should get around the temple for three times while holding sampian. Having done this, the atmosphere of war begins where participants no longer distinguish the opponents, friends, uncle or other relatives. They wave the sampian like mace and spear. GULING CELENG(Suckling Pig)

OVERVIEW:If there’s just one dish that people remember after a

visit to Bali, it’s this famous delicacy, usually known by its Indonesian name, Babi Guling.

INGREDIENTS:1 suckling pig, weighing about 6-8kg1½ tbsp salt200 shallots, peeled and sliced100 gr cloves garlic, peeled and sliced50 gr ginger, peeled & chopped300 gr candlenuts, chopped350 gr fresh turmeric, peeled &chopped3 tbsp coriander seeds, crushed80 gr laos, finely chopped120 gr bird’s-eye chilies, sliced10 stalks lemon grass, finely sliced1 tbsp black peppercorns, crushed1 tsp dried shrimp paste, roasted5 fragrant lime leaves, finely shredded2 salam leaves2½ tbsp oil4 tbsp turmeric water

PREPARATION:Ensure inside of suckling pig is completely cleaned

out. Season inside and outside with salt. Combine all other ingredients, except turmeric water, and mix thoroughly. Fill inside of suckling with mixture, close belly with string or thin satay skewer. Rub the outside of the pig with turmeric water until the skin is shiny yellow.

Place suckling pig on roasting rack and roast in hot oven (220°C / 425°F) for approximately 1 hour. Rest for 10 minutes in warm place before serving. When serving, first remove the crisp skin with a strong carving knife, then loosen meat from the bones and cut into even dice or slices. Place a heaped tablespoon of stuffing on each serving plate, and then top with meat and skin. Traditionally this dish is eaten with Jukut Nangka Mekuah and steamed rice.

Helpful hint: If you have a large barbeque with rotisserie or constantly turning spit, you can cook the pig over charcoal for an authentic Balinese flavor.

JAKARTA - Indonesia is hold-ing an International Training Pro-gramme on Freshwater Aquaculture for Asian, Pacific, and African Countries, and an International Training Programme on Fisheries Processing Product for Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Countries/Members.

“Fifteen African and Asian coun-tries are taking part in the training programmes that are part of the South-South cooperation frame-work,” Maritime Affairs and Fish-eries Minister Sharif C. Sutardjo said in a press statement here on Monday.

Product for Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Countries/Members is being held during May 7-17, 2012, at the Sidoarjo Fishery Acad-emy in East Java.

The participants include eight people from Fiji, Papua New Guin-ea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, and five from Indonesia.

“The international training pro-grammes reflect Indonesia`s com-mitment - in bilateral, regional, and multilateral fora - to providing technical cooperation programmes for Asian, Pacific, African, and Mel-anesian Spearhead Group (MSG) member countries,” Sharif stated.

The training programmes are or-ganized by the maritime affairs and fisheries ministry in cooperation with the foreign affairs ministry.

Umar Patek is accused of being a central figure in the 2002 attacks on two nightclubs in Indonesia’s Bali, which killed many Western tourists including 88 Australians.

In an emotional appearance at his trial, Patek, who says he was only a bit player in the attacks, claimed he had questioned the decision to target Bali and expressed regret.

“I am taking this opportunity to seek forgiveness from the victims, their families and whoever suffered losses,” including the Indonesian government, the 45-year-old said in a voice cracking with emotion.

“I was very sad and regret the incident happened, because I was against it from the start. I never agreed with their methods,” Patek told the West Jakarta district court.

Patek, who was arrested in the same Pakistani town where Osama

bin Laden was killed just months before the Al-Qaeda chief’s death, said he had “no idea” that nightclubs specifically would be targeted.

Patek -- who could face the death sentence if convicted -- said the plans for the attacks on October 12, 2002, were drawn up at the home of Dulmatin, another Bali cohort, who was killed by police.

“It was mentioned that they will bomb a place with many Western-ers as retaliation to the killing of Muslims in Palestine,” Patek testi-fied, speaking calmly and gesturing with his hands.

When the idea of attacking Bali was brought up, Patek claimed he raised objections.

“I questioned why in Bali? Jihad should be carried out in Palestine instead. But they said they did not know how to get to Palestine,” he

said, adding “Dulmatin told me not to think so hard, just help.”

Patek allegedly used simple house-hold tools including a rice ladle to assemble the Bali bombs, which ac-cording to the court indictment were housed in ordinary filing cabinets.

“The defendant filled up the black powder in four filing cabinets, in the meantime, Dulmatin made the bomb’s electronic circuit,” the indictment said.

With bombmaker Azahari Husin, a Malaysian killed at a hideout on Java island, Patek assembled the detonating cord and then loaded the filing cabinets into a car, the document added.

But Patek said Monday his role went no further than mixing the explosives.

“I helped to mix the chemicals,” he confessed. “Azahari assembled

the bombs.”“They loaded explosives onto the

car while I stayed inside my room and read the Koran,” he added.

Patek is accused of being the expert bombmaker of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a Southeast Asian terror network linked to Al-Qaeda. He is also accused of attacking churches in Jakarta on Christmas Eve in 2000.

He was arrested in January last year in the Pakistani town of Abbot-tabad, where US commandos later killed bin Laden.

During the trial, evidence emerged that bin Laden gave JI $30,000 to wage jihad in the region and Patek might have met him when he was in Abbottabad, a claim Patek has repeatedly denied.

“I don’t know about the source of funds,” he said Monday. “In the

name of God, I have never met the man named Osama bin Laden,” he added.

A special agent with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation Frank Pellegrino testified in April that Patek was widely-known as an expert bombmaker.

According to Pellegrino, a wit-ness interviewed by the FBI in the Philippines reported Patek as saying he “was interested in going back to Pakistan and Afghanistan and work-ing with Osama bin Laden”.

Patek was once the most-wanted terror suspect in Indonesia and spent nearly a decade on the run with a $1 million bounty on his head by the United States under its rewards for justice programme.

Prosecutors are seeking the death sentence for Patek on charges that include premeditated murder.

JAKARTA - Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said he has officially re-sponded to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)`s analy-sis of palm oil used as a feedstock in bio-fuel production.

“In its analysis, the EPA has ig-nored the Indonesian government`s commitment to protecting the environment and reducing green-house gas emissions,” the minister said in the official response, a copy of which was made available to ANTARA on Sunday.

At the Copenhagen meeting held in 2009, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono stated his commitment to reducing green-

house gas emissions by 26 per-cent in 2020 and set himself the target of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 41 percent through international cooperation, the minister said.

In addition, the Indonesian government also has issued a moratorium on the issuance of new permits for utilization of primary natural forest and peat land under presidential instruction number 10 of 2011.

In its greenhouse gas analysis of oil palm issued in December 2011, the EPA said that palm oil-based bio-fuel could cut greenhouse emissions by only 17 percent, falling short of the 20 percent threshold, to be included in US

renewable-fuel standards.The trade minister submitted

the official response to the US government on April 26, 2012, a day ahead of the deadline set by the EPA.

In his official response, the trade minister also said in calcu-lating greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA used assumption data rather than real data and therefore, the results of its analysis did not reflect the real conditions.

Quoting the results of a study made by the Food Policy Research Institute in 2010, he said oil palm proved more efficient than any other vegetable oil producing plants, such as soybean and sun-flower beans.

Clinton told a town hall meeting in the eastern city of Kolkata that there’s an adequate supply in the market for India to find alternative sources of oil. Clinton noted India has taken some steps to reduce its imports from Iran but she says the U.S. wants to see more.

“If there weren’t an adequate supply ... we would understand, but we believe that there is adequate supply,” she said. India could face U.S. sanctions by the end of June if the Obama administration deter-mines it has not made significant cuts in imports under a law aimed at squeezing Iran’s petroleum industry to press the country to prove its nuclear program is peaceful.

India, with a growth rate of about 7 percent, has a nearly insa-tiable need for oil. About 9 percent of its oil imports are from Iran, though officials say it has reduced

its dependency on Iranian oil in recent months, “We appreciate what has been done and, of course, we want to keep the pressure on Iran,” Clinton said.

However, India remains depen-dent on the imports, and Iran is its second largest oil supplier after Saudi Arabia. With international sanctions making it difficult to find banks willing to handle Iranian oil payments, India and Iran reached an agreement earlier this year that would allow India to pay for about 45 percent the purchases in rupees. Iran would then use the Indian cur-rency to buy goods from India.

Clinton said the U.S. remained focused on putting global pressure on Iran. “We believe, at this mo-ment in time, the principle threat is a nuclear-armed Iran,” she said. “We need India to be part of the international effort.”

Clinton was also meeting Mon-day with West Bengal Chief Minis-ter Mamata Banerjee, a key partner of India’s ruling coalition who has stymied government efforts to lift restrictions on foreign-owned in-vestments in the country. Clinton was expected to talk with Banerjee about allowing multi-brand retail-ers such as Wal-Mart to enter the market.

“It is preferable to have a short election campaign of four months that will swiftly return stability to the political ranks,” Netanyahu said in a speech to a packed convention of his rightist Likud party. He said he wanted to avoid pressure from coalition partners who were beginning to destabilize the government. He did not specify a date, but a party official earlier said September 4 was the probable date for the ballot.

Likud has submitted a bill to dissolve Israel’s parliament so that an early election may be held. Parliament had been expected to start debating the measure on Monday, but that plan seemed uncertain after a senior coalition partner urged a procedural postponement.

“With the start of the government’s fourth year we have seen many signs that the stability has begun to waver and political instability always brings extortion (and) populism which harm security, the economy and society. I will not allow a campaign of a year and a half that will harm the country,” Netanyahu said.

A Netanyahu victory two months before the U.S. election would give him leverage over Barack Obama on the Iranian and Palestinian issues while the U.S. president is still engaged in his own campaign and wary of alienating pro-Israeli voters.

Netanyahu and Obama have had a thorny relationship and the right-wing Israeli leader has come under pressure from Washington not to take unilateral military action against Iranian nuclear facilities suspected of being part of a project to produce nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear program is purely civilian. Israel is believed to be the Middle East’s only nuclear-armed power. Opinion polls show Likud will easily come out on top of the national ballot, giving Netanyahu a renewed mandate to tackle what he has described as the most important challenge facing his country - the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran. On the subject of Iran, Netanyahu told his party he would not “ease the pressure until the threat is truly removed.”

SINGAPORE — Oil dived below $97 a barrel Monday in Asia, bring-ing its fall over three trading days to about 8 percent, as a slowdown in U.S. hiring and election results in Europe dimmed expectations of stronger economic growth.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down $1.87 to $96.62 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract plunged $4.05 to settle at $98.49 in New York on Friday. Brent crude for June delivery was down $1.81 at $111.37 per barrel in London.

Crude has slumped about 8 percent over the last three trading sessions amid signs oil demand may be weaker than previously expected.

The Energy Department said last week that U.S. crude inventories have risen to the highest since 1990. That was followed by the Labor Department on Friday announcing the economy added 115,000 jobs in April, far fewer than the 165,000 analysts were expecting.

“Economic indicators both in the U.S. and Europe are taking on a more negative appearance,” energy trader and consultant Ritterbusch and As-sociates said in a report.

Investors are also concerned political upheaval in Europe could derail government austerity measures and worsen the region’s debt problems.

French Socialist Francois Hollande, who promised during the presi-dential election campaign to boost spending, defeated President Nicolas Sarkozy. In Greece, the pro-austerity coalition parties suffered a sharp decline in support, which might undermine efforts to keep Greece in the euro currency bloc.

Oil traders often look to global equities as a measure of overall investor sentiment, and stock markets in Asia were down sharply Monday.

In other energy trading, heating oil was down 3 cents at $2.98 per gallon and gasoline futures fell 2 cents to $2.96 per gallon. Natural gas was up 1.5 cents at $2.29 per 1,000 cubic feet.

BEIJING - China sales by Japan’s Toyota Motor Corp and its two local joint-venture partners rose 68 percent in April from a year earlier to about 81,700 vehicles, according to a company spokesman.

For the first four months of the year, the Japanese auto maker sold a total of about 293,200 vehicles, a 14.3 percent increase from the same period last year, said the spokesman, Takanori Yokoi.

Yokoi said the large year-on-year jump in April sales was due chiefly to the fact that sales during April last year were comparatively low because of the massive earthquake on March 11. The earthquake and tsunami paralyzed production of key components and affected Toyota’s vehicle production around the world, including China.

Still, Toyota’s sales momentum was “fairly strong” so far this year, said Yokoi. Because the company’s sales performance was so bad last year due to the impact from the earthquake Toyota “should be able to post double-digit sales growth at least for the next several months,” the Beijing-based spokesman said.

“If things go as normally as we expect, we should be able to meet our sales goal” of selling one million cars this year, said Yokoi.

Toyota’s China sales last year totaled about 883,400 vehicles, a 4.4 percent increase from 2010, reflecting in part the general slowdown of automobile sales in China last year.

After rapid growth in 2009 and 2010, China’s auto market as a whole slowed considerably last year as sales of smaller-engine cars and commercial vehicles stalled after the government ended some incentives for car buyers.

Various industry forecasts point to overall vehicle sales this year growing about 5-10 percent from 2011.

Toyota would have to grow sales by about 13 percent this year to meet its goal of selling one million vehicles.

There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sail-ings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — “Neighborhood Watch” will now be known as just “The Watch.” Fox said Friday that the name of the film starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn as suburban neighborhood watch volunteers who uncover an extraterrestrial plot was changed in light of the shooting of an unarmed black teenager in Florida.

“As the subject matter of this alien invasion comedy bears no relation whatsoever to the recent tragic events

in Florida, the studio altered the title to avoid any accidental or unintended misimpression that it might,” the studio said in a statement.

Fox previously pulled early promo-tional materials for the movie because of the Trayvon Martin case.

The unarmed, 17-year-old Martin was fatally shot in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman on Feb. 26, causing a na-tional controversy. “The Watch” is set for release July 27.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — George Lindsey, who spent nearly 30 years as the grinning Goober on “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Hee Haw,” has died. He was 83. A press release from Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville said Lindsay died early Sunday morning after a brief illness. Funeral arrange-ments were still being made.

Lindsey was the beanie-wearing Goober on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1964 to 1968 and its successor, “Mayberry RFD,” from 1968 to 1971. He played the same jovial character — a service station attendant — on “Hee Haw” from 1971 until it went out of production in 1993.

“America has grown up with me,” Lindsey said in an Associated Press interview in 1985. “Goober is every man; everyone finds some-thing to like about ol’ Goober.” He joined “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1964 when Jim Nabors, portraying Gomer Pyle, left the program. Goo-ber Pyle, who had been mentioned on the show as Gomer’s cousin, thus replaced him.

“At that time, we were the best acting en-semble on TV. The scripts were terrific. Andy is the best script constructionist I’ve ever been involved with. And you have to lift your acting level up to his; he’s awfully good.”

In a statement released through the funeral

home, Griffith said, “George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit. In recent years, we spoke often by telephone. Our last conversation was a few days ago ... I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, ‘I love you.’ That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. ‘I love you.’”

MOSCOW — A demonstration by at least 20,000 people on the eve of Vladimir Putin’s inauguration as president turned into a battle with police Sunday after some protesters tried to split off from the approved venue and march to the Kremlin.

Club-wielding officers wearing helmets seized demonstrators and hauled them to police vehicles, dragging some by the hair, others by the neck. Several protesters were injured, including one man with blood dripping from his head down the left side of his face.

Three leaders of the opposition movement that gained new life over the winter were among those arrested: Sergei Udaltsov, Alexei Navalny and Boris Nemtsov.

More than 400 people were ar-rested, and Russia’s chief investiga-tive agency said it was considering filing criminal charges of inciting riots against some of them. Police reported that 12 riot police officers were injured.

Previous installments of an

unprecedented wave of protests that burst out after fraud-plagued parliamentary elections in Decem-ber had been marked by fastidious order. The crowds, sometimes as big as 100,000 or more, had care-fully kept to agreed-upon meeting-places and routes, even making a point of thanking police who stood guard in vast numbers, but did not interfere.

Sunday’s break in that pattern likely reflected a sense of anger and impotence among protesters upset that Putin was handily elected to a new term in the Kremlin despite their defiance. Putin, who imposed a political system that stifled dis-sent and who dismissed the protest-ers as callow, pampered youths and Western stooges, will be sworn in for a six-year term Monday.

BEIJING - Blind Chinese rights activist Chen Guangcheng said on Monday he expects Beijing to let him and his family travel to the United States without fresh troubles, but re-mains unsure how long it will take for official approval to come through.

Chen said on Monday that Chinese authorities had no reason to try to block him and his wife and two chil-dren from going to the United States. “I still don’t know when I’ll leave, but it shouldn’t be too long,” he said.

“The government openly promised to respect my rights as a citizen, and I expect them to live up to that promise,” he added. “If they did try to frustrate my plans, then they’d be slapping their own face, and I don’t think they will do that.” Any more ructions with Beijing over Chen’s future could embolden U.S. critics of President Barack Obama’s China policies as the United States gears up for presidential elections in November.

“We are reconstructing the past to better fore-cast the future, because we need to know what’s coming in order to adequately prepare for it,” said Cindy Looy, a biologist from UC Berkeley who is leading the project.

Located 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of San Francisco, Clear Lake is one of North America’s oldest lakes. Through fossilized plants and animals and chemical records, its sediments preserve a long history of climate and ecosystem changes — up to half a million years’ worth. The sediments that Looy’s team will study were deposited over about 130,000 years.

An important event recorded by these sedi-ments happened about 12,000 years ago, when the Earth’s last major set of glaciers began to melt. The rate of global warming then was almost as fast as the rate scientists record today, Looy said in a statement. Looking at the step-by-step ecosystem changes preserved in these sediments will help researchers fine-tune the predictive models they’re developing today.

Another important interval the team will study happened during an earlier glacial cycle, between 130,000 and 113,000 years ago. During this period, the area around Clear Lake grew even warmer than it is today. Changes in the lake’s flora and fauna during this time may look like what northern Californians can expect in the future, Looy said.

“There are indications from ice cores and ocean drilling cores that the beginning of the previous interglacial may have been warmer than it is now, which is where it becomes interesting,” Looy said. “We know what the Earth is like at today’s temperature, but a lot of people are trying to predict what will happen if the Earth warms 2-4 degrees Fahrenheit (1-2 degrees Celsius), or even more.”

WASHINGTON - Monica Soltes was excited 10 years ago to leave Merrill Lynch and start her own business as an independent financial planner in San Diego. After she fell off a porch at her cousin’s cottage and broke her elbow, her dreams unraveled. Following multiple surgeries that confined her to bed, Soltes was di-agnosed with a hormonal disease that is weakening her bones. She also ran out of money, signed up for disability benefits and has been unable to work again.

The 47-year-old from Michi-gan is among the 8.7 million American workers on the U.S. disability rolls, an important part of the social safety net. Since the recession began in 2007, she has been joined by a record number of people seeking disability ben-efits, raising questions about the program’s solvency and casting a pall over future prospects for U.S. economic growth.

Applicants soared to a record high of 2.94 million in 2010, and have held above 18 per 1,000 workers in the past three years - a far higher rate than in previous recessions. “There are serious concerns that this increase in dis-ability benefits is a type of ‘hidden

unemployment,’” said Richard Burkhauser, a professor of eco-nomics at Cornell University.

Even though only 35 percent of applicants are awarded disability, those receiving disability benefits now account for 5.6 percent of the working age population, up from about 4.5 percent in 2007. At this rate of growth, Burkhauser esti-mates that total would reach over 7 percent by 2018.

The problem is those on dis-ability rarely return to work, re-ducing the overall size of the labor

force and weakening the U.S. economy’s growth prospects. Ris-ing gross domestic product (GDP) depends upon a growing work-force and rising productivity.

Since the recession began, the share of Americans actively look-ing for work, known as the labor participation rate, has fallen to 63.6 percent from 66 percent in 2007.

Some people give up looking for work temporarily, but the size of the decline has perplexed econ-omists and disability is clearly a factor.

Secretary of the Badung Rev-enue Office, AA Arimayun, when asked for his confirmation on Sunday (May 6) said if the Ocean Blue Pool Villa had had tax ar-rears since 2008. Since that time, the villa had never paid taxes to government. Although he did not mention the exact amount, Arim-ayun stated if based on the data owned by the Badung Revenue Office, the tax arrears were the highest in Badung. While based on information, the tax arrears of the Ocean Blue Pool Villa were touted to reach IDR 16 billion.

In the raid, General Manager of the Ocean Blue, Jin Hur Dna, ad-mitted that his party got financial difficulties so that he was unable to pay taxes. Likewise, his party admitted if he would submit a scheduling proposal of tax arrears settlement to government within this week.

In response to the matter, Ari-mayun confirmed that tax debt payment scheduling could not be granted by government haphaz-

Semarapura (Bali Post)—Nowadays, it seems very difficult to get a qual-

ity government project. For instance, few months after completed, the project has been damaged. It also happened to pavement project related to the restructuring of Semarapura town worked on by provincial government. Not more than two months after the handover, the pavement had been broken or in a mess. Before handover, many parts of the project were damaged requiring the Secretary of Klungkung Ketut Janapria to send a reprimand to implementer of the provincial project through the Agency of Re-gional Development (Bappeda) Klungkung.

As seen on Sunday (May 6), the pavement located on the T-junction in front of the former Parliament Hall of Klungkung (Jalan Gajah Mada) collapsed whereas it had just been accomplished re-cently. Similar damage could also be encountered at some other points. The pavement works seemed to have been installed haphazardly. As consequence, the paving blocks would easily come off when slightly affected by rain.

“Many parts of this pavement project indicate if the project was worked on carelessly. It cannot be passed through by vehicle, let alone be hit by rain splash. It will be easily detached,” criticized Chair-man of the Community Security and Order Forum of Klungkung, Sugiana. If such a condition was neglected, Sugiana worried it would become a habit of government harming the public. “Well, if this kind of incident (inferior project) happens, where should people go to complain?” he questioned.

The project giving impression to have been worked on perfunctorily, added Sugiana, could also be encountered on Jalan Teratai and installa-tion of pavement around the Puputan Klungkung Square and Cultural Center. “Installation of the pavement was also carried out perfunctorily and this can narrow the road body. The Lakers can wrap it up Tuesday night when the series shifts back to South-ern California for Game 5.

Bryant (22 points, eight rebounds, six assists) and Bynum (19 points, seven boards and three blocks) had bounce-back games and Gasol came up with huge plays at both ends as the Lakers controlled the tempo by grabbing 19 offensive rebounds, stymieing the faster, younger Nuggets who blew them out in Game 3. With the game tied in the final minute, however, it was the Lakers’ supporting cast that iced it.

Sutrisna stated if there are still those still ignoring, the problem will be handed to Justice Team of Buleleng Government such as further disciplinary.

As told before, the fish market kiosks built by the Agency a few years ago seemed unused as sellers prefer to sell on the roadsides. Seller think govern-ment hasn’t been fair as they have let some sellers selling on the roadsides such as the road towards Celuk Agung Hotel. This condition cause social jeal-ousy between sellers. This roadside has been sellers place for years. After building a more representative place, they were suggested to move meanwhile with its previous location gone, roadsides sellers moved to the north side. (kmb)

Based on information compiled at Pengambengan on Sunday (May 6), Dewasa actually had started to build a modest house at another location, but it had not finished yet so that his family was unable to occupy it. Up to now, he still survived in a tent given by govern-ment set up near his house. Meanwhile, his newly built house actually lacked of materials and he had no money. On that account, he was currently forced to survive in a makeshift tent. In the tent, he lived along with his wife, children and parent-in-laws.

Unlike the other victims whose

house was not too badly eroded by the waves, some of them remained to live at location. Dewasa used to be called Amat admitted that his house wall required seven pieces of plaited bamboo. At the moment, he just had three pieces and even those pieces were obtained from the village help. If he could not get the remain-ing pieces, he would use tarpaulin to replace them. Among the 14 families becoming the victims of abrasion at Pengambengan, most have moved to new house, while some others still lived at the original location.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of Jem-brana Government, Suherman, told journalists that his party would make coordination with the Negara sub-district head related to the abrasion victims at Pengambengan village. Regarding the victims of abrasion at Candikusuma village, Melaya subdistrict, his party had established modest houses to be occupied tem-porarily. ,collapsed with one of them hitting a motorcycle driver, I Ketut Darmawan (31) from Wanayu, Bedulu while bringing his son I Made Adiwirawan (5) last Sunday (6/5) which got a light wound and rushed to Sanjiwani Hos-pital. Apparently the collapse can be seen it will happen since midnight as stated by a resident, Widianto Putra, who got his house fences also damaged. “At that time it was raining heavily and electricity got cut off. I saw outside, the electricity pole on the south was diagonal,” Widianto stated.

The diagonal pole was then reported to State Elec-tricity Company (PLN) by phone. Workers checked to location but then left again and the pole fell around 8.30 am local time. The incident cause attention and police secured the location. From the information received, the pole was actually a new pole placed a few months ago. Before, the pole was in the middle of a resident’s land next to a river. The heavy rain seemed to cause the soil unstable. According to PLN worker, Irwan, after he checked to location he then cut off the electricity cur-rent and reported to Police to close that part of the road. Yet some vehicle users ignored the forbidden sign and became a victim to it. Luckily with the electricity off, victim was not electrified. (kmb16)

A family at Pengambengan village whose house was destroyed by abrasion some time ago, still held out in a tent near his house. Among several houses affected by the disaster, only the family of Muh Dewasa remained to withstand in tent so far. He had no other choice because his house was destroyed and could no longer be occupied.

in Denpasar because other than being close, the room also had adequate facilities. “I found out a boarding room near the hospital because my wife has not well recovered from the C-section surgery,” said Suardana. But ac-cording to Suardana, her caesar-ean stitches would be opened on Tuesday.

With closeness of the mother to her babies, the breastfeeding for both babies would also be faster and easier.

Jorge Lorenzo reckons beating Casey Stoner to victory in the Portu-guese Grand Prix was an impossible task despite shadowing him for much of the race. Having lost ground to the rapid-starting Stoner on the first couple of laps, Lorenzo (Yamaha) began to haul the Australian in and finished the race tucked right in behind the Honda.

He says however that Stoner had too much energy and pace for him to ever mount a challenge, and that after a ‘nightmare’ weekend he was delighted with second.

“The bike was very good, a lot better in the race than in practice, but the only problem was Casey,” Lorenzo said.

“He was very strong, so for me it was impossible to beat him.

“We had a nightmare during the weekend so to be honest we didn’t even expect second, but we solved a lot of our problems [overnight before the race].

“I had a problem at the start because I banged the clutch, so that was losing me time on the straight for the first laps and Casey went.

“After that the bike worked well, but the problem was Casey had something more. At the end I didn’t have the en-ergy to pass, and my only opportunity was in the chicane but it was too risky. I wanted the points from second.”
