From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents

By the time you read this article, there are less than three weeks of school remaining until Speech Day. There are several important events that occur during this time and I have commented on a number of these for your reference. I have also commented on some news relating to several staff members.

Mayoral School Achievement Medal The Mayoral School Achievement awards were held recently. These annual awards recognise children who have persevered in times of adversity in primary and secondary schools across the Darling Downs. In normal circumstances, one child from the Junior School is nominated. However, this year we nominated twins, Charlie and Tom Bragg, boys who started at our School in the Prep year and who are now in Year 6. Charlie has cerebral palsy which affects his physical capacity. Despite this, he has always tried his best in all areas of school-life. This includes competing in swimming carnivals and track and field carnivals all the way through school. Basically, he always has a go at whatever challenge is put in front of him. The joint award recognises Charlie’s perseverance and it also recognises his twin brother, Tom’s effervescent and positive manner. Charlie would not be the boy he is without Tom and Tom would not be the person he is without Charlie. Congratulations to both boys.

Class Teachers 2017 The placement of Junior School class teachers for next year is always announced around this time of year. For parents who are new to the School, this typically comes as a surprise. Most schools only announce this information shortly before the school year commences, or on the day school resumes in the New Year. Announcing class teachers for next year and then announcing the boys’ class placement works for boys and treats them in a respectful manner. Additionally, this alleviates the anxiety that can arise over the Christmas holidays about the unknown. I would also suggest parents appreciate receiving this information in a timely manner. The class teachers for 2017 are as follows: Prep (2 classes) Mrs Amelia Grills and Mrs Jeanette Morgan Year 1 (2 classes) Mrs Natalie Walker and Mrs Kathryn Stewart Year 2 (1 class) Miss Michelle McCorkindale Year 3 (2 classes) Mrs Jess Galbraith and Miss Ellie McLiesh Year 4 (2 classes) Mr Patrick Wysel and Mr Alastair Bain Year 5 (2 classes) Mr Jamie Lee and Mrs Karin Wharton Year 6 (3 classes) Miss Tiffany Holzheimer, Mr Rob Jeffries and Mr Ben Valentine Staff news Typically, it is at this time of the year that staff changes occur in schools. Mr Jason Locke, Head of Teaching and Learning in the Junior School, has tendered his resignation following his appointment as Head of Preparatory Years at TACAPS, commencing at the start of 2017. Mr Locke started at our School in 2011 as a learning support teacher, before moving into his current promotional position. I thank him for his work with the Australian Curriculum, staff and students over this time and wish him well for his new role.

Mr Tim Bunce, who is currently on extended personal leave, has tendered his resignation effective as of the end of this year. Mr Bunce concludes his time at our School following more than 26 years of service, teaching in both the Senior School and Junior School. Mr

Page 3: Edition 18 3 November 2016 - twgs.qld.edu.au

Bunce taught generations of Toowoomba Grammarians (fathers and sons) and always had the children’s well-being at the centre of his educational focus. I thank him for his fine work as a teacher at our School over an extended period of time. Mr Bunce will remain in Melbourne with his family.

Mrs Colleen Cooper, one of our teacher aides, has tendered her resignation, effective as of the end of this year. Mrs Cooper commenced work at our School at the start of this year. I value her contributions with the children and staff and wish her well for the move away from Toowoomba with her family. Remembrance Day Remembrance Day will be observed on Friday next week, 11 November. We will hold our Remembrance Day Ceremony under the shade sails and relatively close to the flag poles, commencing at 10.50am. As a school community we will remember those who lost their lives and served their country during times of war. This includes many Toowoomba Grammar School Old Boys, whose names are featured on the memorial honour boards in Old Hall. Our School Leaders will play key roles in this ceremony and Lt Col R J Watson, Commanding Officer, 7th Signal Regiment, Borneo Barracks, will be our guest speaker. Parents are welcome to join us for this brief and dignified occasion.

Twilight Concert Our annual Twilight Concert will be held on Friday 11 November. This is always an immensely enjoyable occasion, with approximately 1300 people attending this event last year. The concert will be held on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval, with the stage facing the tiered seating. All boys are expected to be at school by 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start.

Every boy in the Junior School will be involved in the performance and all boys are expected to attend. Parents are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket and a picnic dinner to enjoy under the stars while the boys perform. As with previous years, parents may pre-order pizzas through the Junior School Supporters’ Group and collect these upon arrival. Not only is this convenient, it also helps raise money for the Supporters’ Group. The concert should conclude by 8.00pm. Carpark Safety I wish to remind parents to drive carefully and cautiously in and around school at all times. Yesterday we had a near miss in the carpark as a result of speed and haste, both of which are completely unnecessary. I appreciate all those who exercise extra caution when driving in and around any school.

Early finish to school (2.30pm), Wednesday 16 November The Senior School Speech Day and Prize Giving Ceremony will be held on Wednesday 16 November. The ceremony commences at 4.30pm and all staff members are required at the Empire Theatre somewhat earlier. As a result, our school day will conclude at 2.30pm. Both drive through zones will operate from 2.30pm until 3.00pm. No clubs will occur after school but after school care will operate as usual, commencing at 2.30pm. Further correspondence will be sent home closer to the date with further details.

I am looking forward to a busy, productive and enjoyable final few weeks of school for the boys and staff.

Regards

Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

Public Speaking Competition

The Junior School Public Speaking Competition occurs during the first few weeks of term four each year. Every boy in the school from Prep to Year 6 is expected to participate. Standing up and speaking in front of an audience is a life skill and one that many adults find confronting. By introducing public speaking to the boys from such a young age our aim is to develop confident and competent public speakers throughout the school. Within each class a number of boys received highly commended certificates. Second place and third place in each class received a medallion and first place winners will receive a trophy and book voucher at Speech Day.

School Banking School Banking (Commonwealth Dollarmite Accounts) continues to operate with Dollarmite account deposits being dropped off at the office each Tuesday morning in the collection box. On behalf of the Junior School I would like to sincerely thank Dr Michelle Murphy for co-ordinating the school banking for the past two years. As her son, Ryan, will be moving into the Senior School next year, we are still looking for a parent who would be willing to take Michelle’s place as the Commonwealth Banking Co-ordinator. If you are interested, please let me know. Nude Food Day Just a reminder to families that Nude Food Day is each Tuesday. The boys at the Junior School are encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. There are two main reasons for implementing this idea. One is to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and limit the intake of processed foods. The other reason is environmental, where the amount of wrapping (paper/plastic) used is reduced. We hope that parents will support this initiative. Food ideas include pieces of fruit and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wraps and ham & cheese roll-ups. We’re for the gorilla. Are you? Your reliance on technology can impact wildlife. Many mobile phones contain coltan which is in huge demand for today’s high tech devices. Some coltan is illegally mined in gorilla habitat in Africa. By recycling your mobile phone through Taronga’s “They’re calling on you” campaign you’ll be reducing the demand for coltan, saving your phone from landfill and raising money for gorilla conservation. Recycle your old mobile phone to help gorillas in the wild. Please drop off your old mobile phone at the front office. All the money raised from recycling your old phone supports vital gorilla conservation projects in Africa through the Jane Goodall institute. Reporting All teachers have been hard at work completing assessment in preparation for report writing. Can I take this opportunity to re-iterate the rating system for academic achievement on our report cards. It is quite different to the system that most of us understood from our own schooling and can be quite worrying for some parents of boys who receive ratings below the C standard. The D and E ratings do not mean that your son has failed the concept. It means that they require support or significant support to understand the concept. These rating shouldn’t be a surprise to parents as teachers will have discussed areas of difficulty during parent/teacher interviews. Boys who receive these ratings may also be part of the Learning Support program.

Page 8: Edition 18 3 November 2016 - twgs.qld.edu.au

Level of Achievement

A - The student is working at a very sophisticated level with content in the national achievement standard.

B - The student is working above what would be expected in the national achievement standard.

C - The student is working at the national achievement standard – he is doing as expected. (This is the expected standard across the Nation)

D - The student is working towards the national achievement standard with support.

E - The student is beginning to work towards the national achievement standard with significant support. As always, any questions you may have about your son’s report should in the first instance, be directed to the classroom teacher. Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum In 2017, the boys will be engaging in a new Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum (HASS) throughout the Junior School. This curriculum takes aspects of History, Geography, Economics and Business and Civics and Citizenship, and integrates them into units of work that each boy will be taught across each term. The HASS writing team will be busy next week putting the final touches on the curriculum ready for trialling in 2017. SPEAK meeting Our next SPEAK meeting for parents who have boys with learning differences will be held on Thursday 10 November at 5.15pm in the library. All welcome. Holiday program The Museum of Brisbane will be offering some wonderful education extension programs during the holidays. Just go to http://www.museumofbrisbane.com.au/education/primary/ for all the information.

Sports News GPS Track and Field Last Thursday, the Junior School Track and Field Team competed at the Year 5 – Year 7 GPS Track and Field Carnival in Brisbane. Our athletes performed well and represented the School admirably. The boys enjoyed the bus trip and the chance to compete against the other GPS Schools. A number of boys performed very well on the day including Matt Taylor breaking a record in the 10 Years Division 1 Discus throw. Other boys who won their events were Hussein Yusaf (10 Years Division 3 800m and 3rd in Division 3 100m), and Sam Milner (1st in 11 Years Division 4 100m). A number of boys came out with great results, including, Walter Tinkler 3rd (11 Years Division 3 100m), Charlie Randall 2nd (10 Years Division 1 800m) and Archer Black 3rd (10 Years Division 2 800m). Thank you to the parents that travelled down to support the boys on this special occasion.

Aquathlon Trials Last weeks, five Junior School boys travelled to Dalby to compete in the Darling Downs Primary School Aquathlon trials. There were over fifty boys in total trialling to make the team which competes at the State Championships in February next year. Congratulations to Charlie Randall who finished 1st and was selected in the Darling Downs team. Hugh Pollock was 13th, Patrick Neilson 17th, Archer Black 20th and Lachlan McNamee 36th. Well done boys. The boys were great ambassadors for Toowoomba Grammar School. Their behaviour, effort and sportsmanship were noted and appreciated by all involved. Thank you to all the parents who transported and supported the boys throughout the day. Without your support not everyone would have been given this opportunity. Swimming Next week, boys in Years 2 – 5 will have swimming trials in the Aquatic Centre. The trials are for next year’s swimming carnival which is held in Week 2 of Term 1. Monday 7 November 11.00am – 12.45pm Year 4 Tuesday 8 November 11.00am – 12.45pm Year 3 Wednesday 9 November 8.25am – 10.25am Year 5 11.00am – 11.45am Year 2 Cricket The Toowoomba Grammar School Cricket Camp is being held at School from Sunday 8 January – Tuesday 10 January. If your son would like to be involved please contact the Sports and Activities Office on 4687 2529 or [email protected]. This is a fantastic opportunity for boys to develop their skills and improve their game. Reminder All boys are to return any TGS singlets and jerseys that they borrowed throughout the year. We are still missing a few singlets.

Music Tuition and Instrument Hire 2017

We are fortunate to offer tuition on the following instruments on campus with school Music Tutors:

· Piano · Strings (Violin, Viola, ‘cello and double bass) · Woodwind (Clarinet, Bass clarinet, Oboe, Flute, Bassoon, Saxophone) · Brass (Trumpet, Baritone, Euphonium, Trombone, French Horn, Tuba) · Percussion · Drumkit · Guitar · Music Theory · Voice

For 2017, all tuition request forms, and hire forms will be moved to an online system. If you would like to enrol your son in music tuition or request instrument hire for 2017, please log into the school website and complete the online form. Paper copies will no longer be used.

All continuing students are also asked to log in and complete the online form as well, as this will enable your son to be placed on the 2017 tuition timetables. For students requesting instrument hire, in addition to completing the online form, we also ask that you email us directly while we are in this stage of transition to the online system. This will ensure that we allocate your son an instrument for next year. Boys in Year 2 and Year 4 in 2017 will be allocated a school instrument, and do not need to complete an online instrument hire request. Year 3 Boys Next year, our current Year 3 boys will be involved in the Year 4 Concert Band program. This exciting program involves the Year 4 boys taking weekly lessons on their allocated instrument in small groups with our TGS Music Tutors. These group lessons take place simultaneously for the Year 4 cohort, during their timetabled music lesson time. The

Page 14: Edition 18 3 November 2016 - twgs.qld.edu.au

boys will also continue to have a shorter classroom music lesson and combine as a cohort Concert Band for weekly rehearsals. This is an exciting program for our Year 4 boys, and we encourage you to discuss their instrumental preferences at home over the coming weeks. The Year 4 program provides small group lessons on the following instruments: alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and flute. Over the next fortnight, the boys will meet with Mrs Davidson in small groups to allocated their instrument for 2017. Should you wish to discuss this, or request private tuition on their Year 4 instrument, please contact Mrs Davidson. Kellie Dixon and Jayne Davidson Music Teachers

Chess Championship

The Annual Junior School Chess Championship was held over 5 weeks during term 3. There were 24 participants who took part during the normal Senior Chess Club time on Monday afternoons. The quality and depth of talent among the boys was readily apparent. There was no runaway winner and there were many very tight games and several upset victories. At the end of the fifth round Noah Taylor ended up as the overall winner and Sam Gladwin was runner up with only half a point the difference between the two players. I would like to congratulate everyone who took part; it is always excellent to see the boys playing competitively and doing so in the correct spirit.

After School Care

What we have done over the last fortnight This past fortnight at after school care has been filled with great activities to help the boys with their skill development. Inside, we did craft activities that involved creating our own Minecraft man, colouring in and free paper creating time. The boys also enjoyed playing a lot of chess during the week with many of the boys going head to head in the game. Outside, the boys had their own choice of play activities that involved sandpit fun, tag on the playground and various ball games. The boys had a group game of soccer, which they all seemed to enjoy working as a team and showing their skills.

What we have planned for the next week This week at After School Care we will be focusing on putting the boys’ minds to the test with a few science activities such as constructing a car that moves from the wind and playing with the cogs on a ‘make it yourself’ clock to see if the boys can get it to tick. Outside will include having the boys choose their own activity and play as a group along with educator run group games.

What to do if your child is absent from After School Care? Please remember parents if your child/ren are going to be absent from the service or have gone home sick please call us on 0421 570 461 or notify the customer experience team.
