From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents

One of the most exciting times of the year is nearly upon us. The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week occurs next week. There is a palpable sense of excitement amongst the boys leading into this special occasion which features visiting authors, a Book Week presentation titled ‘Big Dreams’, along with our dress up day next Thursday. I encourage parents to spend time at our School on Thursday morning visiting classrooms, enjoyinging our Doorways Competition and this most wonderful of days where we celebrate reading.

From the moment you step into the Junior School, the hallways, class doors, boys and staff are all transformed. It is a magical feeling and a highlight for many boys.

The Power of Simple Humanity Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. Dr Felice Leonardo (Leo) Buscaglia Over the past week or so I have worked with quite a number of people in my office. This includes adults and children, taller people and smaller ones. Increasingly I am struck by what matters in life and I would suggest the quality of human interactions is at the centre of our daily world. I have watched a mother seat her anxious young child on her lap in my office during an enrolment interview and encourage him along with our conversation. On another occasion, a father gave his older son a big hug in my office, wrapping him up in that blanket of care that is so important for children. I have also watched staff members acknowledge one another with smiles and hugs.

Page 3: Edition 13 15 August 2019 - twgs.qld.edu.au

There is great power in acknowledging boys with a smile and a kind word. For parents of boys, this includes the tactile acknowledgment for a boy of a hug, a ruffle of the hair or a hand on the shoulder. Last year, in one of the darkest moments in Australian cricket the Captain of Australia, Steve Smith in his television conference crumbled completely. His father was next to him and at this moment he placed his hand on his son’s shoulder. The reality is boys need their mothers or fathers in the toughest of times, in the best of times and everything in between.

There are some advertisements running on television currently from an organisation I have not previously encountered, ‘Dads4Kids’. The central message is about a father’s role in parenting. Mothers are particularly good at telling their children they love them. I encourage all fathers to tell their boys they love them each and every day. These are the most powerful words a father can say to his son. Staffing We welcome two student teachers to our School this term. Miss Sophie Rae, who is studying a Bachelor of Education at the University of Queensland is working with Mrs Grills’ Prep class. Miss Anna Paton, who is studying a Bachelor of Education at the University of Southern Queensland will join Mrs Casey’s Year 6 class in the weeks ahead. Eisteddfod Success Many boys and staff were involved in the instrumental section of the Toowoomba Eisteddfod in recent weeks, with our individual instrumentalists and various ensembles featuring prominently. The Junior School instrumental program is substantial, with entry level involving our Year 2 string program and the Year 4 woodwind, brass and percussion program. Beyond this, there are many instrumental ensembles boys can join involving brass, woodwind, strings and percussion. The highlight is being invited to join the Junior School orchestra. Approximately 35 boys are members of our Junior School orchestra and play at an advanced level. These boys won their section at the Eisteddfod for the fifth year in a row. Overall, Junior School ensembles were awarded six first place trophies, five second place and one third place awards, along with several highly commended certificates. This is a fine achievement when you consider we are the only boys’ school competing in the Primary School sections at the Eisteddfod.

Page 4: Edition 13 15 August 2019 - twgs.qld.edu.au

The Junior School Orchestra was awarded first place in their section.

Both Chamber Winds and Percussion Ensemble were awarded first place in their

sections. I congratulate the boys on their efforts and successes. The music staff who prepare and conduct our ensembles, consisting of Mrs Dixon, Mrs Otto, Mrs Brix, Mrs Buchholz, Ms Fletcher and Mrs Crook deserve high praise for the quality of their work with Junior School music. Regards Scott Campbell Head of the Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School During the past week all boys from Prep to Year 3 have been involved in Japanese Cooking. During my absence last term the boys were unable to partake of this experience. The boys, with the help of parents, cooked Okonomiyaki. This is a Japanese pancake consisting of bacon, onion and wombok cabbage cooked in a batter. The boys topped it off with a variety of sauces and a drink of green tea. Such an activity cannot occur without the assistance of parents. Mrs Doherty dressed in her Japanese kimono and assisted the boys with the cooking. When asked what was the name of the special dress Mrs Doherty was wearing, one of the Prep boys said it was an apron! The boys really enjoyed the experience and the majority ate the Okonomiyaki with some asking for seconds and thirds.

Mrs Doherty came dressed in her Kimono to help the Prep boys.

From Head of Teaching and Learning NAPLAN Online Over the past couple of months since NAPLAN, there has been a great amount of discourse at a political level and within the media regarding NAPLAN moving to an online basis. Many schools have participated in trials over the past few years and there have been some issues with the online platform. Toowoomba Grammar School was involved in a trial in 2013 and we experienced some large issues at that point. After the 2019 NAPLAN trials, a federal decision stated that compulsory participation in NAPLAN online has been postponed until 2021. This week we will have some students in Year 3 and 5 trialling NAPLAN online at the compulsory request of ACARA and Pearson Education. This is not testing the online platform, but instead trialling their questions to ensure that questions have been tested for reliability and validity. I thank the boys and the teachers who will be involved in this trial, a necessary step to ensuring a fair NAPLAN for all students. QAMT Year 5/6 Quiz evening On Tuesday 13 August, three boys from our Junior School, Banjo Seaniger, Jett Heffernan and Sebastian Kerle-Taylor, competed in the regional rounds of the QAMT (Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers) Mathematics Year 5/6 Quiz. I would also like to thank Mrs Amy Casey for taking and supporting our boys at this external competition. Teams were to consist of boys from Years 5 or 6 with at least one team member from Year 5. This quiz was a difficult competition with a range of mathematical thinking and

Page 6: Edition 13 15 August 2019 - twgs.qld.edu.au

problem solving questions across 5 rounds. The boys represented the school very well and I congratulate them on becoming the inaugural winners. Well done boys!

Youth Parliament On Wednesday, 7 August, our House Leaders participated in the 2019 Toowoomba Youth Parliament. This is the first time since 2012 that a Youth Parliament has been held in Toowoomba so it was a wonderful opportunity for our Leaders to participate in such an event. The Youth Parliament was presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the Hon Curtis Pitt MP as well as two local Members of Parliament, Patrick Weir MP, Member for Condamine, and David Janetzki MP, Member for Toowoomba South. Over 95 students were in attendance, all presenting one minute speeches on either a set topic or a topic of choice. TGS were members of the Government and participated in the voting of the Government and Opposition Motions throughout the day, using the same format as the Queensland Government when Parliament is in session. Each student was given a Youth Member title for the day, with this being the only way they were addressed by the Speaker when it was their turn to speak. Archer (Youth Leader of the House), Charlie (Youth Member for Diamantina) and Matthew (Youth Member for Dawson) delivered a speech in the Youth Government Motion, in support of banning the advertising of junk food, whilst Will (Youth Minister for Science and Information Technology) and Hammond (Youth Member for Don) spoke during the Adjournment Debate where they chose their own topics. Will argued the case that students need to go on more excursions for the benefit of their learning and Hammond discussed the importance of all schools having solar panels to support their environmental footprint. It was a day of many speeches but as they were all delivered so passionately by the Year 6 students in attendance, the day passed by quickly. It was a wonderful experience for the House Leaders, giving them the opportunity to utilise what they learned in Canberra during the day. Whether there will be future politicians amongst our five attendees, we will have to wait and see, but they now have had a taste of what it is like to be a part of a Parliament

Page 7: Edition 13 15 August 2019 - twgs.qld.edu.au

sitting. To conclude the day, the Hon Curtis Pitt MP happily posed for photos with each attending school where the boys were able to have a chat in a more relaxed setting.
