From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents I hope all boys and families enjoyed the Easter school holiday, spending time together and living life at a somewhat slower pace. As a school community we welcomed several new students this week or towards the end of last term. Ezra Adames (6C), Tom Dampney (5S) and Jake Decker (3S) commenced their schooling with us this week and Chayton Wong (5L) joined us during first term. I extend a very warm welcome to the boys and their families and wish them a long and happy association with Toowoomba Grammar School.

Understanding boys

As parents of boys read this paragraph and the link below!

As a teaching staff we seek to understand boys, celebrate their many wonderful characteristics and maximise their potential both in the classroom and across the co-curricular program. The link below is to an article about understanding boys written by Michael Gross from an organisation titled ‘Parenting Ideas’. I shared this with all Junior School staff at our start of term staff meeting and I encourage parents to read it over the weekend. https://www.parentingideas.com.au/blog/10-facts-about-boys-that-you-may-not-know/ Staffing One of our Year 5 teachers, Mr Jamie Lee (5L) returned to School following his long service leave in first term. I welcome him back and thank Mrs Jo Jones for her fine work teaching 5L during this time. This weekend, Miss Michelle McCorkindale, our Year 1 teacher, celebrates a very special time in her life as she marries her fiancé, Carlos Gomes. I congratulate Michelle and Carlos and wish them every happiness at this special time in their lives. Michelle will return to school next week as Mrs Gomes. Our new After School Care provider, Hall-Thorpe Sports, officially commenced their association with our School this week. I welcome Miss Georgia Mitchell as the After School Care Co-ordinator and look forward to her contributions with the boys. Mrs Tamika Byatt, also with Hall-Thorpe Sports, will oversee the initial set up phase and assist with operations during this time. After School Care continues to operate from the Learning Extension classroom (J2).

Works During the Easter holiday, the kitchenette in the Junior School Hall was completely renovated. The kitchen was originally built in 2010 and was only ever outfitted as a bare shell. The renovation allows for this space to be used to its full potential for functions and events. I appreciate the generous funding to the value of $14 000 provided by the Junior School Supporters’ Group for this important project.

The new kitchen in the Junior School Hall Whole School Assembly, Thursday 2 May A whole School assembly will be held on Thursday 2 May in the Glen McCracken Sports Centre, commencing at 2.20pm. This will feature involvement from Junior School and Senior School students, celebrating a range of successes. Parents are most welcome to attend with seating being available upstairs on the mezzanine level. ANZAC Day Service The School’s ANZAC Day service was held today, Friday 26 April. All boys from Year 3 to Year 12 attended this service, which was held on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval. Our Junior School ANZAC Memorial also occurred in our playground today. I acknowledge and thank Mrs Jess Galbraith, Prep to Year 3 Co-ordinator, for her fine work with the Junior School Memorial and installation piece. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Winter Uniform The boys are required to wear winter uniform in Terms 2 and 3. The Term 2 uniform change is predominately the trousers. The long sleeve shirt is not a compulsory item. When the weather is colder, your son must wear the school jumper as the first item of selection. If he needs more warm clothing, a navy blue or black t-shirt may be worn under the school shirt and he may also wear his vest under the school jumper. The school rain jacket is the last item to be used to keep warm. Prep Sports shorts, short or long sleeve Prep shirt and tracksuit. Years 1 – 3 Long blue trousers, short or long sleeve blue shirt and soft broad brim hat. Years 4 – 6 Long blue trousers, short or long sleeve blue shirt and Akubra. Friday is sports day. All boys wear Golds on this day. Golds include the school sport shirt, sport shorts, white TGS socks and sports shoes. The TGS tracksuit may be worn if your son is cold. If your son runs out of white TGS socks, plain white shin high socks (crewe length) may be worn. Anklets or no socks are not acceptable. Hats The following rules apply to Junior School boys: Blues / Blazer Uniform Prep to 3 - sports hat (broad brimmed/soft) Years 4 to 6 - Akubra Golds / Sport Prep to 3 - sports hat (broad brimmed/soft) Years 4 to 6 - bucket hat All boys should have the correct hat(s) and maintain them in good condition. Further to this, boys who do not have hats will not be permitted to play, in keeping with our Sun Smart policy (no hat, no play). These boys will be required to sit in a designated shaded area.

Allergies It is timely to remind parents that several boys have an allergy to peanuts or nuts in general. Should they ingest or come into contact with peanuts or food items containing peanuts the boys will suffer a severe allergic reaction that is potentially life threatening. It is not unusual for schools to have children enrolled with such allergies. I respectfully request that parents refrain from sending their sons to school with peanut butter sandwiches or peanut based products. Additionally, boys are not to share their food with each other at school. Blazer Uniform All boys from Year 1 to Year 6 are expected to wear Blazer Uniform every Thursday during Terms 2 and 3. This information features in the Student Diary as well as on the School App. Please note that Junior School references are to Blazer Uniform and Senior School references are to Blazer Dress. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From Head of Teaching and Learning Welcome back to a new term. This term is a big one from a curriculum perspective. I hope that over the holiday period you had a great opportunity to spend some time with your son/s. I also hope that you had an opportunity to chat with your son about his Interim Report and set some goals together for this term. In regards to goals, think of the KIS principle – Keep It Simple (but challenging and attainable). This term a number of big curriculum based events will occur. None of these will receive as much media attention as NAPLAN. As a school, we believe that a focus on quality teaching will support our boys through these tests. That said, teaching specific test taking skills and strategies, exposing students to the style and conditions of tests and talking about what to expect and the purpose of these tests to reduce pressure are all simple ways that we have been preparing your sons for NAPLAN in week 4. Another standardised testing opportunity that all boys from Years 2 - 6 will engage in is the REACH program of assessments. The University of New South Wales has provided a range of competition assessments over many years. This year, they have made some alterations. In addition to ICAS, a series of Year Level standardised assessments have been developed which they have named ‘REACH’. Our boys from Years 2 - 6 will be participating in English (Term 3), Maths (Term 3) and Science (Term 2). The boys from Years 3 - 6 will participate in the Digital Technologies (Term 2) assessment as well. From these assessments, those who score in the top 10-15% of participants will then be invited to compete in the ICAS competitions in Term 3. The Maths Olympiad and Games competitions begin this term and continues into Term 3. All students in Years 5 and 6 have been entered in either a Maths Olympiad or a Maths Games competition. These competitions tie in with our focus on developing problem solving skills. This term will see two of the five competition papers. Each paper has five word based mathematical problems and 30 minutes to solve them. Maths Team Challenge is another Mathematics competition where a select few boys from Year 5 and 6 will represent the school. The competition will be held at St Ursula’s College on May 7. Finally, one of the best parts of this term is the school wide Writing Competition. Each year, every student in the Junior School engages in a writing task to be submitted as part of a House Competition. After independent judging, each class will have a first, second and third place as well as three highly commended certificates. These positions then provide House points towards the third House shield of the year. This competition is a wonderful long running initiative to encourage writing for a purpose and ties in with each year level writing curriculum. I wish all of the boys the best of luck in this competition.

Rob Jeffries Head of Teaching and Learning

There are a huge range of activities for the boys to participate in so we are looking forward to a great term. The House Track and Field Carnival is on Thursday 30 May (Week 6) at the O’Quinn Street Ovals. Trials will start next week and we will pre-run some events before the carnival. Boys will trial during PE lessons. GPS football and tennis starts this weekend for boys in Year 5 and Year 6. Training for GPS will occur on a Wednesday and Friday during school time.
