Last weekend residents from Glasshouse Country and the Sunshine Coast rallied to help Beerwah locals Graeme and Amanda Ardern’s challenge to raise $30,000 for Graeme to have life saving surgery. For those of you who may not know about Graeme, he is aged 36, married and a father of one. Recently he was diagnosed with a rare tumour which doctors believe is malignant. He has been advised that he can only obtain treatment in Sydney, and Graeme’s operation is to take place on October 10, so the clock is ticking to get the funds raised. Graeme has already suffered enough during his 36 years, dealing with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at 11 and the now ongoing Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, not to mention all the other associated health issues. There were two fundraising events last weekend locally on the

Sunshine Coast to help raise money for Graeme’s much needed surgery:It was all action at the Glass House Mountains Early Education Learning Centre where a garage sale was held with free jumping castle and balloons for the kids, face painting, sausage sizzle and cake stall! Then on Sunday, Gowinta Farms at Beerwah sold PYO Strawberries for $10.00 per kg and all the funds raised went to Graeme and Amanda. If you would like to know more about the appeal check out their facebook page http://www.facebook.com/GraemeArdernTumourAppeal

Our cover features Patrick Murphy with John Nisbett at the recent performance by the Queensland Police Pipe and Drum Band at the Beerwah Peachester RSL. See page 22.

Many readers will already be aware of the story of Beerwah local Graeme Ardern’s challenge to raise $30,000 to pay for life saving surgery. This past weekend has seen two community events organised to help raise the funds required. On Saturday a family fun day and car boot sale was held at the Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre at Glass House Mountains which raised nearly $3,000.This was followed up on Sunday with a great day at Gowinta Farms at Beerwah. Gowinta Farms owners generously decided to donate all of the sales of the last day of PYO strawberries for the season going to Graeme’s cause.Plenty of strawberries were picked which means another $1,500 has gone into the kitty. With Graeme’s life saving treatment booked in for October 10 the family still needs your support. If you have missed these opportunities and would like to make a donation, you can donate via direct deposit at Westpac Branch: Beerwah Name: Graeme Ardern Tumour Appeal BSB: 034 164 Account Number: 114173 or you can go online to http://www.gofundme.com/7io08Beerwah State Primary School with be holding a cupcake day on Friday to help raise funds, so if you have kids that go there you might want to make sure they have some money with them to help out the cause.Or if you see a donation tin in one of the many local businesses then drop in what you can, remember every little bit counts.

Deputy Opposition Leader kept busy during visitShadow Minister for Trade and Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop and Member for Fisher Peter Slipper got a personal tour of the ‘Africa’ exhibit from Terri Irwin, during a visit to Australia Zoo last week.

Ms Bishop is a key leader in Australian politics and is very committed to addressing the challenges facing our nation, in particular those issues relating to trade and foreign affairs,” Mr Slipper said.“It’s great that she has the chance to visit Australia Zoo and inspect the amazing displays, while also discussing trade and tourism issues directly with Terri.”

Ms Bishop, who is also Deputy Opposition Leader, was invited to the Sunshine Coast by Mr Slipper, and will attend a number of events, including meeting with local exporters and with the executive of the University of the Sunshine Coast. While in the area, Ms Bishop will attend a breakfast at Alexandra Headland, Australia Zoo, lunch at Beerwah, a meeting with exporters at Mr Slipper’s office at Buddina, a meeting with the executive of the University of the Sunshine Coast and an evening cocktail function.“I am particularly keen to invite locally-based exporters to attend the function with Ms Bishop at my office, so they can raise any issues of

Nina Fitzgerald, Julie Bishop MP and Peter Slipper MP with baby croc

concern with her directly. It’s an informal event, there is no cost, and it is a great opportunity to ensure the voice of local exporters is heard by Ms Bishop.”

Declared Fire Danger PeriodThis week GCNews caught up with the guys from Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Service to find out about the current Fire Danger Period and what it means to us.Basically the Fire Danger Period means Queenslanders will not be allowed to light a fire, regardless of the size, without a permit from midnight Sunday, September 4 to midnight on Sunday, January 1, 2012.It is common practice for QFRS to implement a Fire Danger Period during bushfire season as a step towards preventing fire from escaping and potentially putting lives and property at risk.A Fire Danger Period is not a Fire Ban. It simply means that you need to receive a ‘Permit to Light Fire’ for fires where a permit is not usually required; however there are still some types of fires that can be lit without a permit during the Fire Danger Period.

Q. Can I have a barbeque, hangi or campfire?Yes, but only if:• The fire is lit in a properly prepared fireplace that prevents the escape of fire and burning material.• The ground and air space is clear of flammable material.• The fire and fuel used are the minimum necessary for the purpose and do not occupy an area of

more than one sq metre.• A person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight.

Note that QFRS considers, a ‘properly prepared fireplace’ to be:• Constructed of stone, metal, concrete or any other non-flammable material so

as to contain the perimeter of the fire. Or a campfire constructed to be capable of containing burning material in a trench or barrier of rocks.

• A commercially produced barbecue would be considered a properly prepared fireplace.Q. Can I have a small fire to burn garden litter and small piles of vegetation?Yes, but only with a valid permit issued by your local Firewarden, and:• There are no Local Government restrictions applicable to your area.• The Permit to Light Fire conditions are followed. A person is in attendance at all times while the

fire is alight.• Check with your local council and call FIRE COM before lighting any fires.Q. Can I light a fire in the open air for burning off grass, stubble, weeds, undergrowth or other vegetation?Yes, but only with a valid permit issued by your local Firewarden, and:• There are no Local Government restrictions applicable to your area.• The Permit to Light Fire conditions are followed.• A person is in attendance at all times while the fire is alight• Check with your local council and call FIRE COM before lighting any fires.Q. Are there any exemptions from the requirement to have a Permit to Light Fire?Yes (see below) • Canegrowers have certain exemptions from the requirement to obtain a permit. For more

information contact your QFRS Rural Operations Area Office Caloundra 5420 7517.• Fires lit for the purpose of burning the carcass of a beast do not require a permit.• Fires lit to dispose of sawmill waste do not require a permit.• Fires for cooking and warmth do not require a permit. In all cases the use of fire must be done in a responsible manner. All fires must be attended to at all times the fire is alight. Local Governments may have rules or by laws prohibiting the lighting of fires. Check with your local council before lighting any fires.Firewardens can be located by using the Firewarden Finder available on the website www.ruralfire.qld.gov.auFor more information visit the web site shown above or call one of the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade Volunteer Community Educators Steve Rook 0407 572 930 or Gavin Stewart 0437 931 657.

Locals volunteer for 12 months in ThailandAfter a two week Mission’s Expo with Church on the Rise in Beerwah, local resident Ashley Elias felt a calling to volunteer to help the poor and disadvantaged in the world. In 2012 Ashley and her son Joshua, 12, along with Wayne and Jen Hamilton, will live in Phetchabun, Thailand for 12 months through the organisation Mercy International, which welcomes self-funded volunteers.

“My young son and I feel the need to offer our gifts and talents to children, families and communities in Thailand,” Ashley said. “We want to embrace and love those children who have been abandoned. We want to help children grow and develop in all areas of their lives and we want to be involved in building the children’s new homes and other community projects.”

Ashley believes it will be a life changing journey for everyone involved. “Not only for the children we hope to help, but also for my own son Joshua. It will be good for him to understand the freedom that we have compared to what they have. I’m hoping he’ll grow up into a very aware and compassionate young man…which he feels at the moment, he wants to help people. I think he’ll constantly care about other people before himself and want to give,” she said.It will cost about $700.00 a month for all living costs, but because by law they also need to leave and return to the country every 90 days they will need extra financial support to cover this.

“I hope people will be able to provide valuable support in our efforts,” Ashley said.

“Together we can help many people who are in need. Your financial assistance is appreciated, as well as your prayers. It is worth it to make a difference in the life of a child.”

To help raise funds they will be holding a car wash, raffle and sausage sizzle on Saturday, October 15 at Shell Service Station, Beerwah, between 12.00noon and 4.00pm. Or if you would like to make a donation please phone Tina Church on 3496 2875.

Trip of a lifetime for young localsBlake Mccubben is one of three local Beerwah High students that will be travelling to Tanzania as part of an amazing trip organised by ‘yLead’, a group dedicated to creating inspirational young leaders through extraordinary leadership, education and personal development experiences. This will be Blake’s first trip overseas and the longest period of time he will have spent away from his family. So while he is only mildly

concerned about how he will handle it all – he is really excited about what he will experience.Blake said he was really happy to try new things, and was keen to get involved with the activities at St Jude’s School, which was set up by an Australian woman in 2002.“We will be running a sport’s carnival for the students which will include athletics events while we are there. If any locals have sporting equipment that they would like to donate to the school or trinkets or stationary, I would be more than happy to take them with me,” Blake said.Blake was introduced to the idea early in Year 11 and he’s been focused on saving the $9,000 required for his travel costs and expenses. He has achieved this by saving from his earnings from a Traineeship he is completing in an architect’s office, as well as part-time work at the Landsborough General Store. To be accepted into the program the students initially had to fundraise $500.00 which they did by running barbecues at school.Other highlights of the trip will be going on a three day African safari as well as climbing Mt Kilimanjaro. It’s a good thing we have plenty of good spots here for training for the climb, said Blake.Blake has also purchased a seriously professional camera for his journey. Readers of GCNews can look forward to seeing some of Blake’s photos in the January editions of the paper. If you have anything that you would like Blake to take with him he can be contacted on [email protected] counting down the days to his big trip

Glass House end of the line for ultra marathon runnerWe recently brought you the story of Ultra marathon runner Andrew Hedgman, 24, and his attempt to run 200 kilometres over two days, finishing at the Glass House Mountains. At the time Andrew said, “if I have to crawl to the end I will.”We are happy to report that Andrew didn’t have to crawl across the finish line, but his run wasn’t without some dramas. Both days saw high temperatures of around 30 degrees, he

got swooped by four magpies, one landing a direct hit to the head, and he even ran past an active bushfire only a couple of hundred metres away from his course. But the run had many lovely moments too, including running over Wivenhoe Dam and spotting a variety of local fauna.“I saw many animals including a bunch of kangaroos all standing in a paddock staring at me as I ran past, a cute koala clinging to a gum tree and a paddock that had donkeys, horses, cattle and emus,” Andrew said.“Recovery after event only took one day. I feel I could do it again.”While this ultra marathon was a good deal shorter than the time Andrew ran the length of New Zealand it was for a good cause, with all funds raised going to worldwide organisation World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA ), an organisation that helps change the lives of animals. Andrew is grateful for all the support he has received.Donations will still be taken for a couple more weeks at www.everydayhero.com.au/andrew_hedgman

Water main upgrade at Glass House MountainsUnitywater is upgrading water mains in Fullertons Road and Springburn Drive, Glass House Mountains, in order to provide additional pressure to the water supply network during peak demand periods. This planned works program will commence in early October and will continue until early December 2011. It will involve installing new water pipes and work will be undertaken from 7.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, with no weekend work expected. To carry out this necessary upgrade to our water supply infrastructure we will need to disturb footpaths and driveways, however these will be restored on completion of the work.No water interruptions are expected as this critical improvement is undertaken, however residents will receive a notice in their letterbox at least 48 hours prior to any planned disruption to water supply.Following pipe installation, Unitywater will need to flush the mains to remove sediment and

ensure continued high quality water supply, and this may result in discoloured water for a short period. If this occurs, please run taps for up to five minutes until the water runs clear. This costs less than 25 cents and on average uses less than 125 litres of water. If water remains discoloured after this time customers should contact the Customer Service Call Centre on 1300 0 UNITY (1300 086 489).Residents of Fullertons Road and Springburn Drive may notice increased traffic and associated noise as this essential infrastructure upgrade is undertaken.Unitywater will have a traffic management plan in place to assist with safe access and to minimise disruption to traffic and pedestrians while this work is completed. We thank customers in advance for your patience and understanding as this important planned work is carried out to ensure certainty and quality of water supply.

The Green Army team recently completed a six week speech craft course where they learned all aspects of public speaking as well as interview skills. Well done to all participants and a thank you to Martine and Esther for their expertise and support to the group.

Embracia in Glasshouse country would like to thank The Beerwah Recycle Station for the donation of memorabilia items for use in our ‘Chook Pen’ makeover. We have transformed a plain corner of grass into an interesting area full of old fashioned items including a singer sewing machine, wheel barrow, tools and garden implements as well as a very interesting bird feeder. The residents have already taken an interest and have pointed out items they used in days gone by.Thanks to volunteers Sharon Logue and Anne Southern for their hard work and creative expertise. I am sure the chooks are going to be very happy in their new environment.

Already living the dreamTalented singer, actor and dancer Cassi Hilbers, nine, from Beerwah has already learnt that the road to reaching one’s goals can sometimes be a little bumpy. Earlier this year Cassi hoped to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts in America, but unfortunately she wasn’t able to get there. It didn’t mean the end of Cassi’s dreams though, just a change of direction, because when she tried to return the money donated to help fund the trip everyone told her to use it to continue her musical goals.Since then Cassi has released her first song ‘So It Seems’ on You Tube and iTunes; a song, fittingly, about getting out there and reaching for dreams. Now she is about to release her second song, ’Playin’ Like A Princess’, on October 15.Both songs were recorded at Bignote Productions on the Gold Coast. Cassi not only wrote the lyrics but also did the backing vocals and was involved in the process from beginning to end. The videoclip for ‘Playin’ Like A Princess’ was filmed at Petite Princess Parlour at North Lakes. The lyrics are about having a fun day out with friends, being yourself, and realising that anyone can be a princess.Cassi said she found the process of recording songs exciting. “It was amazing, really fun and cool. I love to sing,” she said.Cassi also loves to help others. She has decided to donate $1.00 from every CD of ‘Playin’ Like A Princess’ sold to the Make A Wish Foundation. “I just wanted to help sick kids so they can do what they want to do,” she said.In the future Cassi wants to perform on stage, singing, playing guitar and piano, acting or dancing. “Then I’ll be happy,” she said.

Her second song will also be released on You Tube and iTunes. CD’s can be purchased through her website www.cassihilbers.com

Landsborough railway car park lobby groupState Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle recently announced a Landsborough car parking committee would be formed to lobby the state government to provide more car parking at the railway station.Mr McArdle along with community leaders, and business people met with members of the Department of Transport to discuss concerns about car parking around Landsborough Railway Station.“The problem has been alleviated somewhat with limited timed parking to occur in certain areas, but that is only a short term solution.“We need a long term answer and the members

of the Minister’s office were left in no doubt that the growing population of the Coast will continue to use Landsborough as the major bus and rail interconnect for years to come.“Land is available on the opposite side of the current car parking facility, which can be utilised and was in fact considered at one point in time.“A formal committee will be formed in the near future to lobby the Minister directly and hopefully we will have a solution shortly.“The immediate solution would be opening up that land adjacent to the railway station that would cope with many cars on a daily basis,” said Mr McArdle.

From the Schools

From Morgan WinlawGlasshouse Country Christian College correspondent

A schoolies tale to rememberIt’s almost that time of year again. The parents are cringing, the media are snap-ready and the graduating class of 2011 is set to burst out of high school and into party mode.Schoolies week is approaching fast and furiously and it’s usually surrounded by the hype of alcohol, wild nights and Surfers Paradise.Although, after discussing schoolies with many of my fellow ’11 graduates from schools around the coast, it seems a week they probably won’t remember isn’t on their agenda.Instead of living it up on the glitter strip, many of this year’s graduates will be cruising the Whitsundays, travelling with family overseas, or saving for their new car. In 2011 it seems the

schoolies possibilities are endless. However one chooses to celebrate the closure of their high school chapter is a reflection of one’s personal choice. The way I see it, as long as you can proudly tell your schoolies story to your grand-kiddies one day, any one of these possibilities are entirely okay.Myself, I plan to save my schoolies money for a total revamp of my wardrobe. But that’s just my shoe-loving self.As long as we’re accepting of others schoolies choices and that those choices are wise ones, then this celebratory season should be one to remember.

Students get creative to promote special dayHave you seen any of these brightly coloured posters around? Peachester State School last term held a special colouring competition amongst the students to help advertise the School’s Centennial Fete on Saturday, October 15.The students are playing a huge part in preparation for the Fete by colouring posters, organising themed baskets to be raffled, and preparing performances to entertain the crowds. Some will also participate in the instrumental band, recorder band and choir, while others will be assisting on stalls. The Community involvement for this unique event has been fantastic.

A previous parent Ian Owen has beautifully created handmade pens from an old camphor laurel tree previously located in the School. The Peachester Historical Society will display the history of the School and Peachester in the hall, and have also helped in producing a 2012 calendar depicting in photos the School’s 100 years. There will be stalls from local sellers, dance group Ausfunk performing, face painting by the Peachester Playgroup, and more.Peachester State School would love to welcome back as many past students as possible for this exciting day celebrating a 100 year milestone. So keep your eyes open for the posters and details, and get ready for a great day.

New face behind the counter at Beerwah Health FoodsHi, I’m Keith Pearce the new owner of Beerwah Health Foods. My background is in nursing, I have trained as a general, psychiatric nurse and I also have a nurse teacher qualification. So making the transition into this business means that I am on a steep learning curve however I intend to gradually become more familiar with the extensive range of products that we stock. The previous owner Ray Purvis is definitely a hard act to follow, as he developed a very large knowledge base, in the 13 years he served the community. In the future you can expect to see some minor changes to the shop’s layout e.g. shifting some of the shelving and arranging items in different ways.It will be gradual changes and hopefully it will enhance your shopping experience at Beerwah Health Foods. I look forward to meeting many of Ray's regular customers and hope to see you soon in the shop.

Rotary UpdateContributed by Ursula StarkovskyPart of the Rotary commitment each year is to support local organisations either with cash donations or donations in kind.It was with great pleasure that the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains handed over some much needed and appreciated training equipment, like the ‘little Anne’, three very versatile resuscitation mannequins as well as a defibrillator, which will be shared between the SES, and the Rural Fire brigades of Landsborough and Glass House Mountains. First aid kits and a brand new camping stove (including the gas bottle) were gifted to the local Scouts and Glasshouse Country Coaches were rewarded with a Certificate of Appreciation for their continuing support of our RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) program.

Caboolture Family HistoryThe Caboolture Family History Research Group took the opportunity to donate some money back to the local community recently. The Group had raised money via a raffle earlier in the year to assist other family history groups who had been affected by floods. As the Group could not locate a group who desired the money, it was agreed at a recent general meeting to donate the money back within our own local community where it can help others. For further information about the Group, please email them at [email protected] or phone 5428 2018.

On Wednesday over 150 people attended the Biannual Show and Tell at the Peachester Hall for Mountain Quilters Club Inc.Quilters, friends and other people with a new interest in quilting attended from far and near. Club members came from areas such as Tin Can Bay, Redcliffe, Bribie, Beenleigh, as well as local clubs from Cooroy, Connondale, Maleny, Caboolture, Buderim, Moolah and Caloundra. The challenge for the Mountain Quilters was to complete a runner using paint sample colours to be featured prominently. This was voted on by the visitors and won by Alwyn Bowyer with second place to Robyn McHardie.Everyone enjoyed the display of quilts and projects shown by the Mountain Quilters members and all the visiting clubs. The artistic beauty left everyone ooohing and ahhing.Mountain Quilters will now be working hard and concentrating on their next event to show off their talents and hospitality at their quilt show in May 2012.

What's in the SpotlightPeachester History

Committee

A Century of education 1992Over the years, Peachester has staged numerous hugely successful school and district celebrations and this year’s Centennial Fete on Saturday, October 15 will be no exception. It was a trip down memory lane as we recall the ‘Now and Then’ events of Peachester’s Century of Education spectacular in 1992. Previous pupils and teachers turned back the clock of time when they signed the visitor’s book in eager anticipation of another special day.It was a rare chance to view Jim Hall's amazing whittling display and a restful time in the Church where a lifetime of Nessie Pratten’s fine arts was on show. There were vintage cars and old engines, wood turning, whip plaiting and collar making, and in keeping with Peachester’s timber heritage, wood chopping and Nev Anning’s shingle making demonstrations.Rides in Keith Houghton’s wagonette and two horses was a must and to set the atmosphere, a piano accordion group from Montville played the tunes of yesteryear. Tying the festivities together was Town Crier Graham Leach.Within the space of the Hall, the magnificent Mountain Quilter’s Centenary quilt had pride of place as backdrop to a floral stage arrangement. Displays of school photos, spinning and weaving, pottery and quilting; sales of mementos and the book ‘Recollections of a Century of Education’ all set the scene for an area abuzz with reminiscing.Peachester turned it on in usual style with refreshments all day, Audrey Pike’s damper and billy tea, the Queensco dairy van, a licensed bar and an evening barbecue and dance. The school staged fete type activities with a variety of stalls, helium balloons, finger and fence painting. On the oval, old style races such as egg and spoon, sack and three legged races were run. A merry-go-round, a train, a puppet show and dancing by the children’s group ‘Ants Pants’ were further delights. A ‘buy a book or plant’ stall for anyone wishing to add to the school library or garden proved a great success. The opening by previous pupil Henry Egerton and the chance to place an item in the Time Capsule completed another memorable Peachester celebration. The History Committee is confident that the School Centennial Fete on October 15 will be equally spectacular.

Many thanks Mr PowellThank you for your endeavour to initiate rectification of the Peachester Range Road. The Ministers reply in January re: floods and landslip investigation rings somewhat hollow as the road has been in a state of disrepair for some four years.Having operated a business along a section of this road for 12 years I witnessed the huge number of businesses from the Sunshine Coast to the Darling Downs and further out that rely on this important connection road. Not being able to receive a definite rectification program from the Minister leads one to assume nothing will happen until after the election next year when the problem will then be the responsibility of the incoming Minister.Present Polls indicate Queenslanders are seeking a strong, accountable Government, the response we are presently receiving indicates anything but.

Music Today

Song writing tips - Part 1I often come across singer / guitarists who perform a little and who at some point have tried to write a song or two, because

they believe it is the next step in a musician’s career. For most of them a few unfinished songs are produced and they generally give up, thinking they don’t have the talent. The truth is, as with most things in life, it is largely about the discipline and hard work more than the talent. You will pick up the skills as you go along, but you can’t expect to write a good song in one or two weekend sessions.First and foremost you need a song writing method. Part of this method involves identifying your target audience and your performers, and consciously making decisions on your song format and content. It might appear easy to think it is just country, rock, blues, metal, hip hop, dance etc and expect it will all fall into place, but you need to go deeper into the content. For example, is the song going to be about your attitude to something (e.g. ‘Satisfaction’ by the Rolling Stones), or will it be a simple narrative (e.g. ‘The Gambler’ made famous by Kenny Rogers)? For many budding song writers the first trap is that they think every song needs to be about their own experience, otherwise they are not being honest. Professional song writers however work with ‘imaginings based on fact’, in other words what is being sung about might have happened to someone in their target audience. Limiting yourself to writing about yourself is far too self indulgent. Let your imagination go and write a good (very short) story, or describe an attitude typical of your anticipated audience. How do you get started? Titles are a good place to start. John Lennon apparently looked at newspaper headlines for inspiration, and, as it is what your audience is left with to describe your song, it needs to be memorable. In general, newspapers are considered a good source for song writers as they provide the sort of stories and information that can inspire a song.Next month I’ll provide some tips on song-writing tools, form and the importance of sharing your music with others.Do have a creative musical month!michael

Rock’n’Roll at Family Fun DayRock’n’roll tunes from the 50s 60s and 70s will fill the air with ‘City Limits’ playing at the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day, Sunday, October 16.Four-piece band ‘City Limits’, regularly plays venues in Brisbane but on October 16 you will find them at the Mooloolah Fun Day, for a return visit to wow the crowds.

The Round Mountain Girls at Beerwah HotelThe boys (they’re not really girls) are excited with only a few days left until they perform at the Beerwah Hotel this Saturday night. If you caught them at the Gympie Muster you’d know this band is not like any other band playing the circuit. They will be playing material from their two albums, a bit of classic bluegrass and Irish and some completely inappropriate rock songs beaten into shape with a banjo. RMG inevitably put on a party. And it’s a dance party!Whether it’s a laid back Sunday afternoon in a beer garden or a Saturday night in a room used to loud rock bands, every RMG gig always ends with a dance floor full of sweaty, smiling people yelling for more.

Conversation for Conservation with Joel SartoreThe next Conservation Conversation will be held in the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital conference room on Thursday, October 13 from 6.15pm to 7.45pm.The special guest will be National Geographic Photographer, Joel Sartore.A life-long Nebraskan, Joel Sartore brings a sense of humor and a mid-western work ethic to all of his National Geographic Magazine assignments. Two decades with the National Geographic Society have allowed him to cover everything from the remote Amazon rain forest to beer-drinking, mountain-racing firefighters in the United Kingdom.Joel is committed to conservation, especially in the Great Plains where he has lived his whole life. In his time with National Geographic, he has focused on endangered species and land use issues. He is co-founder of the Grassland Foundation, and a founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers.Entry to the presentation is a gold coin donation and there will be light refreshments and a lucky door prize! This will be a very popular event so book early to ensure your seat. Please RSVP by Monday, October 10 for this upcoming Conversation for Conservation by contacting Wildlife Warriors HQ on 5436 2026 or email [email protected]

“We had a great time last year and enjoyed the atmosphere and activities,” says band member Barry Back, who is also Mooloolah’s Post Master.Joining ‘City Limits’ on the full-day entertainment program will be music and dance performances from the Mooloolah, Eudlo and Glenview State Schools plus Op Shop fashion parades, Deborah Dickson singing, Pete Foster’s rootsy tunes and a roaming accordion.Sparkles the Clown will be coming for some fun in the sun. There will be lots of other fun entertainment for kids including an animal farm, pony rides, giant slide, jumping castles, dunking machine and face painting. There will be giveaways galore with prizes announced throughout the day at the giant raffle wheel and free plants.Stallholder spots open – free for community and $20.00 for businesses - bookings close October 5, so get in quick! This fun event is hosted by the Mooloolah Community Centre, Sunshine Coast Council and White’s IGA.So soak up the tunes and have some fun at the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day, 10.00am – 3.00pm, Sunday, October 16 at the Mooloolah Community Centre, 43 Bray Road, Mooloolah. Nominations close on December 16.Highway wideningThose wishing to sign my petition calling for the widening of the Bruce Highway between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast to six lanes can sign it at my office at Buddina or at the office of Andrew Powell MP at Maleny.Kidney disease ratesThe Australian Institute of Health and Welfare warns cases of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) that are treated with dialysis or kidney transplantation will increase over the next decade.Australia’s ageing population and increasing rates of diabetes (the most common cause of treated ESKD) are estimated to contribute considerably to the predicted increase. The findings are included in the report, Projections of the incidence of treated end-stage kidney disease in Australia, 2010-2020.The report is available online at: www.aihw.gov.au/publication-detail/?id=10737419875&libID=10737419874

Out and AboutIn order to recognise the 2011 National Threatened Species Day I took the opportunity to visit Peachester State School to present them with a Richmond birdwing butterfly vine. This vine is particularly important to the endangered Richmond Birdwing Butterfly as its larvae only eats leaves from this one vine. Thanks to Principal Mrs Hodder and her students for accepting this donation. It was also an honour yet again to be invited to attend and speak at the Glasshouse Country Debutante Ball. The Debutante Ball is an event our society has embraced through many generations and it is always pleasing to see the Glasshouse community get behind this tradition year after year.Mobile Office in Glass HouseKeep an eye out for my mobile office when it rolls into town on Thursday, October 6. I will be stationed at the Glasshouse Mountains Info Centre from 3.30pm to 5.00pm so if you have any state issues that you need to raise with me please come along and have a chat.Jann Stuckey for cocktail function in Glasshouse MountainsJann is the Shadow Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business so having her in the Glass House electorate to talk directly to small business and tourism operators is a really great opportunity. I know many of you have done it tough in the wake of the floods earlier this year so now is your chance to come along and hear what strategies the LNP has in place to boost tourism in Queensland and also to tackle the challenges facing small business. Jann will be guest speaker a cocktail event on Thursday, October 6 at the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern starting at 5.00pm. Tickets are $25.00 per person and are selling fast so make sure you contact Christine Fraser on 0407 374 342 or [email protected] to reserve your place.

BE A PROACTIVE MORTGAGE HOLDER - AND SAVEOften borrowers mistakenly believe that all lenders are the same and that there is no scope to reduce loan costs – unless you threaten to leave your lender. But that’s far from the truth. Those who have already sought assistance from their Smartline Adviser will know this to be true. So, if you haven’t yet worked with a mortgage adviser, get in touch and start saving. All lenders are not the sameThere is actually a good deal of difference between lenders on interest rates, fees and credit policies, and borrowers can potentially save thousands of dollars by doing a bit of

homework and contacting their lender to, for example, request a reduction in their interest rate.If you’ve shopped around and found better deals, you’ve got nothing to lose by contacting your current lender and asking: ‘what can you do for me?’ If you already work with a mortgage adviser chances are they’ve already done the running around for you.Get organisedIt’s important to ensure that your ‘financial house is in order’, as there is no point in asking your lender for a better deal if you’re always late making loan or credit card repayments for instance.

Save and keep credit in checkBorrowers have the best chance of success if they have a savings record, are up-to-date with all of their bill payments, and have resisted signing up for any additional debt. This is increasingly important as more and more of your repayment history is being recorded on your personal credit file, which is carefully scrutinised by lenders.Lenders look at the credit limit on your credit cards as a liability you may have in the future, even if you don’t currently owe a cent.Get a home loan health checkA ‘health check’ with an experienced mortgage adviser

who has access to information on loans from multiple lenders can prove very helpful.Mortgage brokers have access to a vast array of products and services across a panel of lenders. As such, they can tailor a solution to suit your unique personal requirements.Often, just going to another bank for a better product offering may give you the leverage needed to negotiate with your preferred lender – and a mortgage adviser will do all of the negotiation on your behalf at no cost to you.Call Adviser Teresa Harrison on 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098www.smartline.com.au/tharrison

Unspoilt native bushland is the idyllic setting for a small, new residential development just minutes from Landsborough’s town centre that is fittingly named Pathways.Pathways will feature five hectares of bushland, creeks and open recreational space threaded together by walking paths winding through the tranquillity of its natural setting and connecting to village pathways leading back to the centre of town.Sales and Project Manager Scott Heaney said the name had been carefully chosen to reflect many elements of the development and the surrounding township’s pioneering history and heritage as a Cobb & Co transport hub in the hinterland area.“We’re proud to say that throughout the planning for Pathways we’ve deliberately protected the most attractive aspect of all - that it’s nestled amongst the trees with lush bushland, creeks and walking trails for exploring right at the doorstep,” he said.Despite a very low key release of initial blocks of land to the market, the interest in Pathways is already proving strong with both local buyers and those seeking an escape from the city.“People were seeing the signs, driving up and asking about available land, which is a great sign that it really looks like a beautiful place to live,” Mr Heaney said.

“We’ve had a retired couple and both their adult children consider moving in to be close to each other, as well as young families and professionals sizing up the generous lots.”“We feel that Pathways is a return to the great Australian dream of owning space for a decent backyard and room to play or grow, surrounded by trees, and yet be close enough to everything to have a rural feel but not remote,” Mr Heaney said.Pathways will be developed in phases to ensure optimum amenity for residents with a first stage release of just 21 large traditional lots, followed by the release of further stages over the next two years. The first stage Elouera Release includes mountain view lots sized from 1,009m2 and traditional and bushland frontage lots ranging in size from 700m2 to 1,139m2.

A few years ago, in order to raise the awareness of AIDS in our communities, a series of ads was run on TV showing the disease to be the great executioner who will spare no one who is unfortunate enough to contract the disease. At the time it had a frightening impact in the population, as was intended. The campaign used a form of psychology that was intended to induce fear and dread in people, the same fear and dread that gripped many in former generations when faced with God who was presented as a fearsome God who would not hesitate to send souls crashing down to Hell for even the slightest of transgressions of his commandments.Over time the effects of the Grim Reaper ads began to wane. Similarly in recent times we have lost our fear and awe of God as a fearsome judge. It does us well at times to consider that, as St Paul never tired of reminding his people, we will all have to give an account of ourselves (2COR 5: 9-10). Now most of us do not err in large matters in God's eyes, but rather it is in what we fail to do that we err

badly. It is with these thoughts in mind that I quote the following lines by Jill E. Penley.God won't ask what kind of car you drove, but He'll ask how many people you drove who had no transport. God won't ask the square metreage of your house, but He will ask how many people you welcomed into your home. God won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet, but He'll ask how many you helped to clothe. God won't ask what your highest salary was, but He'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it. God won't ask what your job title was, but he will ask if you performed your job to the best of your ability and with honesty and integrity. God won't ask how many friends you had, but he will ask how many people to whom you were a friend. God won't ask in what neighbourhood you lived, but He'll ask how you treated your neighbours. God won't ask about the colour of your skin, but He'll ask about the content of your character.Remember in the parable of the rich man Dives and Lazarus the poor man at his door; Dives was condemned, not because of anything he did to Lazarus, but because he failed to see the poor man and did nothing to help. We might well ask; How many Lazarus characters are there in my life?

Bumper seasonMy garden is bursting at the seams! I have so much in at the moment and would love to expand my veggie patch to make room for the large and often sprawling summer crops of pumpkin, rockmelon, corn, sweet potato and watermelon. However, I know that the summer months can dampen that enthusiasm as the pests and diseases become prevalent … so I will just stay content with my lot for now.My patch at the moment is in the transition time between winter veggie harvest and summer crop planting and I am finding it hard to find spare space for the latter. This is only made worse by the fact that the precious space I found and planted what I thought were my rockmelon seedlings, is actually now a whole garden full of zucchini plants. Mmm … I will be finding out

Proudly sponsored by Coochin Creek Co-opfor all your gardening needs39 Simpson St, Beerwah Ph: 5494 6219

how many recipes I can incorporate zucchini into now, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Like many gardeners, I love the constant challenges that force me to consider alternative options. So to deal with the lack of space during this transition time, I am attempting to ‘underplant’ and ‘interplant’ my seedlings I have raised. So far, I have planted button squash and zucchini in the spaces made when I harvested carefully selected potato plants, tomatoes amongst my beans, and some cucumber under my broccoli plants. So far, so good.

To get around the problem of not being able to prepare my soil in my usual way of digging in organic matter and manure, I planted the seedlings in small pockets of compost and will aim to build up

around the plants as they grow with a mixture of compost and manure. Furthermore, I’ll be giving all my cucurbits a regular fortnightly seaweed based liquid feed over the summer months to try to reduce downy mildew. On the harvest front, many gardeners will be finally seeing their crop of onions come to fruition as the bulbs form. Remember to stop watering them as the stems die back to enable the matured bulbs to cure which will make them better for long term storage.Other crops ripe for the picking this month in my patch are beetroot, potatoes, beans, carrots, peas, fennel, broccoli, cauliflower and a mountain of strawberries. So instead of spending any spare time in the garden, I’ll be in the kitchen bottling beetroot, blanching broccoli and cauliflower, and cooking up loads of strawberry jam.On a final note, I hope everyone is blessed with great neighbours like I am. It is great to be able to share produce, wisdom, assistance and friendship where the fence line is no barrier…thank you! Until next time in Get Up and Grow …

Getting marriedJacob, age 92, and Rebecca, age 89, are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they pass a chemist. Jacob suggests they go in. Jacob addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?" The pharmacist answers, "yes." Jacob: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?" Pharmacist: "Of course we do." Jacob: "How about medicine for circulation?" Pharmacist: "All kinds." Jacob: "Medicine for rheumatism?" Pharmacist: "Definitely." Jacob: "How about suppositories?" Pharmacist: "You
