Hello Flyers!
Not much to report. Torrey Pines is still
shut down, maybe in Phase III they will
open. Park and Rec does NOT want
paragliding or RC flying happening.
Let's not push it at this point. I highly
recommend not flying out at the cliff.
Let's try to keep up the good
relationships with the Glider port and
the City.
In the meantime Poway and Encinitas are open to some
flying. I have been flying at Lake Hodges…it's a little
hike. Blossom is open - you may have seen the pictures of my
Shadow taken at Blossom in the last newsletter…it's also a little
hike.
At this point the Katie Martin Fun Fly is postponed until further
notice.
Hang in there.

News from the Slope – Mark Baldacchino, Slope Coordinator
Mark Baldacchino
Happy June & Happy Summer, TP Gulls!
As I write this during the last week of May, the Gliderport is still closed,
but we’re inching closer to reopening. There is a PDF file in this San
Diego Park link that I monitor that has the status of Torrey Pines park,
(AKA Gliderport) on pg. 26: https://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-
recreation. At the rate that the city is opening up, I wouldn’t doubt if
there will be “some” lifted restrictions for us to fly soon. Whatever you
do, be careful. The Gulls are not responsible for your health, and if you
violate city closure mandates, it’s on YOU. Please don’t spoil it for the
rest of us!

League of Silent Flight
Blue Skies,
Ray Pili
LSF Coordinator
Hi everyone,
The League of Silent Flight is a fun program for RC soaring achievement. The LSF Secretary
John Marien (a former TPG member) has suggested that it is now possible to email him a
picture or PDF (preferred format) of your LSF sheet whenever you complete a level. A
check is no longer required with this procedure. He will then review and determine
approval. You can be working on your next level as soon as the form is submitted. John
Marien can be reached at [email protected].
Check our website for the next LSF event and come out and join us to move up a level!
Remember that our contests (slope races, DLG / TD contests, etc.) can count towards your
LSF achievements for the LSF soaring program (SAP) and our new F5J contests can count
toward the electric soaring program (eSAP). Additional information on LSF can be found
at www.silentflight.org
LSF events are on hold for the duration of the COVID-19 crisis.
Check the TPG website, RCGroups and future newsletters for updates.

From Cliff Hunter:
Here is my second project for COVID-19 Stay at Home!
The Yellow Jacket 3.5M RES is
designed for electric launching. This is a very competitive model in F5J
against all other build up "Ribbed" wing models. While the wing does flex
it is very strong, durable and forgiving. The center wing spoiler is very
effective for descent's and spot landings. Here is the web site address

TPG at 50: Looking Back – Gary Fogel
Hourglass Field
I’ve written in the past about the club’s use of Hourglass Field for thermalling in the 1970s and
1980s but the covid quarantine finally gave me the time to get to some photos. Hourglass
Field started out as a landing field in 1931 and operated under the name of Linda Vista Mesa
Field. Soon it became converted to use as an out-landing field for the Navy with a single
large piece of asphalt arranged as three overlapping runways in the shape of an hourglass.
This asphalt field was completed in 1942 and used for carrier landing practice during WWII as
well as a bombing range. After the war, the field was converted into a drag racing strip, but
after an accident in the 1960s the Navy abolished use of the field for auto and motorcycle
racing and dug large trenches in the surface to prohibit the behavior. This was well timed, as
the Torrey Pines Gulls was looking for a site for thermal contests in the early 1970s – what
better field than a large black piece of pavement that gets super-hot! The field was used by
the TPG from the 1970s into the 1990s when nearby Miramar College expanded. In addition,
the surface was increasingly used by local law enforcement for driving instruction – and the
pressures of all these activities pushed the TPG to find another location. The area where TPG
used to operate at Hourglass is now a parking lot at Miramar College.
Additional information on the history of Hourglass Field can be found here:

TPG History: The Trophy – Gary Fogel
This Month: Jim Bolen, 1991 Modeler of the Year
Again with another great TPG member that I just do not have a lot of information on but who
make a considerable impact to the club. In 1990, a group of scale-minded TPGers formed the
Torrey Pines Scale Soaring Society to enjoy fun flying scale RC sailplanes. Their focus was mainly
at Torrey Pines, however they searched for a new thermal field that could be used for fun
flying rather than the regular contests that were held by TPG at Hourglass. A field was located
in Poway and used for a short period. However, at roughly this same time TPG lost its ability to
use Hourglass Field for thermal duration due to the increased use by the San Diego Police
Dept. for vehicle training. Jim Bolen, who if I remember correctly was a retired police officer at
the time, worked out permission with the owner of the Poway field for the use of the field by
TPG. The TPSSS moved and later took up residence at Black Mountain Middle School instead.
Initially the Poway Field – now known to TPG
as the “Poway Flight Center” was to the
southeast of where we fly today, right about
where the southern stables are. In January
1991, TPGers Richard Bledsoe, Pat Conway,
Don Van Gundy, and Joe McBride used a
pickup truck and a metal drag borrowed
from the North County Clouds to clear the
field of brush. A few weekends later Joe
McBride returned with a skip-loader to flatten
out the landing area, and also filled in the
entrance road so that small cars could make
it more easily from Garden Road to the field.
Don and Sue Van Gundy helped clear rocks
from the field along with Gary Anderson. The
resulting field was roughly 900 feet long, with
permission to use about 30 acres of land.
GULL WINGS NEWSLETTER – JUNE 2020 PAGE 32
TPG History: The Trophy (continued) TPG History: The Trophy (continued)
The owner was very kind indeed, as this was a much needed gift for the TPG! While we continue to use the owner’s land, our
flying site moved over time to be further away from the horses. However, next year will be TPG’s 30th year of association with
the Poway Flight Center. In 1991, contests continued at Hourglass Field and Bay Terraces Park while some events were also
held at Montgomery-Waller Park. I believe to some degree Jim Bolen may have also been involved with TPG’s access to
both of these latter fields as well. (The rec center at Montgomery-Waller Park was dedicated on June 1, 1991 with several
TPG members (including yours truly) making glider demonstrations for the crowd). At the TPG annual banquet in 1991, both
Jim Bolen and Sal Peluso were given special certificates for free glider rides at Warner Springs for their effort – Jim to secure
fields, Sal to help with welding. Sal was the welder who made the pin board at the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Jim’s efforts to
help secure fields were honored with his winning the 1991 Modeler of the Year trophy. Think about all of the great
experiences that the Gulls have had because of our connection to the Poway field – a special thanks goes to Jim Bolen, to
the field owner, and to Mike Smith for helping maintain that solid relationship over many years.
