Active and Practical Learning

Young Enterprise programmes are based on the principle of "learning by doing" and each programme involves practical, fun, hands-on activity, led by a volunteer from local business or the community working alongside teachers/ lecturers with specifically designed Young Enterprise programmes

History of Young Enterprise

• Founded in the 1962/3 academic year by the late Sir Walter Salomon, based on the Junior Achievement model, which had been running in America since 1919

• Company Programme : to enable young people to develop skills and knowledge for business and enterprise through setting up and running their own company with the support of representatives from the business community

• 1980s launch of Team Programme • 1990s range of sessional programmes developed• 2000 Primary programmes established

Team Programme

• Offers young people who experience difficulties with their learning an opportunity to develop skills for work through a real-life enterprise experience

• Students set up and run a company over 1 or 2 academic years • A weekly meeting is attended by a volunteer from business who

works with the students• Directly supports the development of key and life skills• Offers students practical experience of work and business• Provides the opportunity for achievement regardless of ability• Flexible programme delivery ensures students of all abilities can

take part
