Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. Nelson Mandela First and foremost THANKS needs to go out to the Senior Scholarship Dinner Committee. All the hard work paid off in a successful event that will provide funds for those graduates who will continue their college career or begin this fall. While the final tally is yet to be determined I am confident we will meet our goal. This was truly a collective effort. As a school we should be proud of the fact that this tradition is still strong after 10 years. Secondly, we have begun the spring assessments of our student academic achievement, which will continue throughout the month of April. As I am learning, this is quite a task to organize and execute. The results will be shared and analyzed with the CHPA community. We will endeavor to strategize on how to better support students learning so our students can receive the best education possible. As we hurdle towards the end of the year many activities will be taking place including two of our students representing DHPH at girls state and one participating in the state science fair. We have also had several of our students placing in the annual Art Show. Congratulations to our students. Buen Hecho! Planning for the May 6th annual CHPA Day is underway as well as graduation of our Kindergarteners and Seniors. Both events will be great celebrations of our students' achievements. And if all this isn't enough, CHPA will host the Hyde Park West Side Community neighborhood clean up on June 11th. Even though we will be out of school, several of our students and staff will be participating. This is one way we support our community. Finally, with the reciept of the $200,000 grant from the Colorado Health Foundation, we are beginning the work of preparing for a new elementary playground. Yes, this spring will be very busy for all but very satisfying as we engage in activities supporting student success. Sí Se Puede Richard

MyLife (Multicultural Youth Leadership Initiative for Excellence) is a program to create a leadership experience for Pueblo youth of all ethnic heritages that enhances civic engagement, fosters leadership, encourages education, and promotes career and professional development. It is a program for 8th grade students to help develop leadership potential, with a strong commitment to community involvement in Pueblo.

This year the MyLife students of Pueblo chose to raise money for two separate causes in the Pueblo community: Child Abuse Prevention and Suicide Prevention. All proceeds raised stay in the Pueblo community. The students at CCA chose to sell rubber ducks for $1.00 with a blue ribbon on them that signifies Child Abuse; all the proceeds for Child Abuse will go towards The Child Advocacy Center in Pueblo, CO.

They also chose to sell bracelets for Suicide Prevention for $1.00; these bracelets are purple and teal which are the colors of Suicide Prevention; these monies will also stay in the Pueblo community going towards Health Solutions.

These students have been working very hard all year trying to raise funds for CCA and have a goal of $500.00.....they are half way there now! If you would like to donate money towards their cause please contact Miss Theresa to purchase a bracelet or duck or to just simply donate money!!! It is for a great cause and it stays in the Pueblo community!!!!

Theresa M. Martinez, M.S.

Works

CHARACTER COUNTS! can change the entire climate of a school, organization, or community. When the program is fully implemented, participants see:

• Improvementinacademicachievement

• Reductioninmisbehaviorandcrime

• Increasedattendance

• Improvementinschoolclimate

The proof is in the data.

Improvement in Academic Achievement

In the Lennox School District, CA, the percentage of students at or above proficiency on the Mathematics CST increased steadily within two years.

And here is the data to prove it.

* in conjunction with other teaching and curriculum strategies

At Atlantis Elementary School in Cocoa, FL, the percentage of students scoring 3 or above (on an ascending 1-5 scale) on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test jumped from 45% to 78% in one year after CC! implementation.

In Downey Unified School District, CA, API scores rose 5.12% in the four years after CC! was implemented.

With the introduction of CC! as the only new variable, Hinsdale Central High School, IL, has achieved consistent improvement in ACT and AP scores and increases in the number of National Merit Scholars.

Reduction in Misbehavior and Crime

In Kaweah Continuation High School in Tulare, CA:

• Discipline referrals fell from 553 in the first year of CC! implementation to 67 three years later.

• In two years, dropouts fell from 17 prior to CC! implementation to two.

• Suspensions fell from 259 prior to CC! implementation to 69.

• Expulsions fell from 17 prior to CC! implementation to two.

Downey Unified School District, CA, saw the total of suspension days decrease from 6417 to 3757, down 41.45% in the four years after CC! was implemented. This decrease in the number of suspensions generated a costssavingsof$85,120.

In the three years prior to CC! implementation, the total number of expulsions fell from 250 to 229, down 8.4%. This drop intensified in the four years after CHARACTER COUNTS! implementation, as the total numberofexpulsionsfell64.19%more, from 229 to 82.

The Six Pillars of Character is a framework for teaching good character and is composed of six ethical values (characteristics) everyone can agree upon: Trustworthiness; Respect; Responsibility; Fairness; Caring; and Citizenship. Each of the six character traits are used within our CHARACTER COUNTS! program to help instill a positive learning environment for students and a “culture of kindness” making schools a safe environment for students to learn. The Six Pillars of Character values are not political, religious, or culturally biased. In fact, every year since 1995 our program has been officially recognized and endorsed by the U.S. Senate and The President of the United States. (From CharacterCounts.org)

Parents, students, teachers, and staff are all invited to join this committee as we think about the needs of our school and how we can re-ignite this school-wide program in the Fall of 2016. If you would like to volunteer and participate on the new Character Education Committee for the 2016-17 school year please email Mrs. Alicia Herrera at the High School by the end of April. [email protected].

Anyone can be a collector.

And it doesn't cost anything to be this type of collector, in fact, you can actually raise money for CCA and the Ronald Mc Donald House by doing it.

Please save all your Box Tops for Education and your Labels for Education (These are the ones with the apples on them and we need the entire bar code.)Place in a zip lock bag, envelope, etc, and mark your child's name on it and send it to school. Your child can turn these into his classroom teacher. The Box tops generate funds for necessary items that are normally not in the classroom budget and the labels for education are used for playground and sports equipment.

Beverage, fruit, soup, and vegetable tabs are collected and donated to the Ronald Mc Donald House in Colorado Springs. They are recycled at a higher recycling rate and the funds raised help provide housing for parents and families who need lodging due to a child's catastrophic illness.

Please help these worthy adventures and become a tab, top and label saver.

Exciting things continue to happen in Kindergarten.

Caps and Gowns are ordered! Graduation photos have been taken!! We are practicing walking in a real straight line with our hands to ourselves! Yep, graduation will be here before you know it.

Thank you to the many parents who participated in our Parent Teacher Conferences. It is always such a fulfilling experience to sit and talk with each parent and their child and discuss their many successes.

We have a field trip coming up! Tuesday, April 12 the Kindergarten classes will be visiting the Giodone Library. It is always so exciting to visit this library as Mrs. Sparks family has historical ties to thelibrary.

And mark those calendars for our end of the year field trip on Tuesday, May 17 to the Cheyenne Mountain STATE Park--notice not the zoo-the State Park in Colorado Springs.

Parents are welcome to join us on our field trips, just let your student's teacher know.

And out big news for kindergarten: We are switching classes for reading--just like the big kids do!! The students are going in reading groups and they go for an hour each day to be with another teacher. Theyare getting ready for first grade.

Have an awesome April and keep those beverage tabs and box tops coming.
