W INTER 2013 United by Faith. Dedicated to Service. EECM Impact Have a Heart for Hunger Our annual Have a Heart for Hunger Campaign begins on Valentine’s Day, February 14 th , and ends March 31 st . Every winter during these 6 weeks, we draw special attention to our Hunger Programs -- the Food Pantry, the Soup Kitchen, and Meals on Wheels. Our kitchen also feeds guests at our Orr Compassionate Care Center, Emergency Shelter and the youth in our Summer Day Camp. For more than 42 years, EECM has been working tirelessly to address the epidemic of hunger in our community. Last year alone, our Hunger Programs served more than 90,000 meals and provided groceries to more than 3,000 individuals. We find ourselves in the midst of a national economic recession, serving a neighborhood that continues to struggle with economic troubles. In addition to the already poor economy, in August 2012, Pennsylvania ended the General Assistance program which offered PA residents, including disabled or sick unemployed adults, survivors of domestic violence, and adults in drug and alcohol treatment, with monthly cash benefits. Since then, we have seen an increase in the demand for our Hunger Programs. Our Food Pantry, which had been serving about 550 families each month, is now serving more than 650 families monthly. Our Soup Kitchen is serving 2,000 meals per month, up from 1,800. In the last several months, not only have we have seen our numbers continue to grow, but the faces coming through our doors are changing. We’re seeing more families with young children in the Soup Kitchen. The Food Pantry is serving a growing number of clients who are in EECM’s various transitional housing programs. We are committed to providing food and resources to every person who comes to us for help, but we can’t do it without YOU! Join in the Have a Heart for Hunger campaign and make a difference. All financial contributions to EECM’s Hunger Programs made between February 14th and March 31st will be matched by an anonymous donor, up to $30,000. Your donations will go twice as far and help us buy even more food at a reduced rate from the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.
EECM’s Happy HolidaysWe often have individuals, groups, families, and congregations who collect food or other supplies for our programs. These gifts help our programs run more smoothly, as our finances are severely stretched. On some of these occasions, however, our staff is pleasantly surprised - even overwhelmed - by these gifts. This holiday season, we had a few of these surprising and inspiring occasions.
Every Christmas, Pittsburgh Filmmakers screens It’s a Wonderful Life for 4 days at the Regent Square Theater. Admission is free, but they ask movie-goers to bring non-perishable items or donations for our Food Pantry. Gary Kaboly, Director of Exhibitions, said that they were ‘overrun’ with patrons and donations this year. Our Food Pantry staff loaded our cargo van with about 100 boxes of food and more than $800 in cash donations.
One young friend, Micah, also gave gifts that will benefit many of our programs for a long time. For his Bar Mitzvah, Micah collected used board games. One afternoon, three members of our staff, Micah, and his parents unloaded two car loads of games - about 400 games! We’ll share the games with all of our programs. Some will go to our Children & Youth staff to use in our programs or for youth to take home. Others will be used at the Drop-In Center and given to individuals and families in our transitional housing programs and clients who use the Food Pantry.
Our annual Christmas Gift Program was another great success this year. Our generous donors helped brighten the holidays for the adults, children, and families in our programs. 672 children and 66 adults received gifts from more than 20 organizations, groups, and individuals.

Over the last six months, the landscape at Penn Circle North and Penn Circle East has changed a lot! Two former parking lots have become a busy construction site. Each day as construction progresses, we can see our dreams of the last several years literally taking shape.
This project, including all costs, has a budget of more than $15 million. We have seen truly incredible support from local foundations, congregations, banks, corporations, and individuals to help us get within less than $2 million of that total. But, we still need help to finish this project! The Campaign for Community House is still going strong, even during construction. The Future of EECM:
• In Community House, the Food Pantry will be open 7 days a week, serving families in need all day long.• The Soup Kitchen will be open Sunday through Friday, serving more than 42,000 meals annually.• Community House will have comfortable suite-style rooms for 36 shelter guests, including women for the first time.• We will be able to expand our Children & Youth programs, and have a safe place our youth can call their home away from home.• Community House will include facilities for the confidential counseling that has been lacking in all of our programs.
Council of Congregations Spotlight: Missionary Temple Ministries
Missionary Temple Ministries was founded in 1950 by the late Leonard T. Jones, under the name Missionary Temple Church of God in Christ. The name “Missionary Temple” was chosen because of the church’s extensive mission work throughout the City of Pittsburgh. The church was originally located in the Hill District of Pittsburgh where it ministered primarily to children and youth with Bible studies and Sunday School classes.
“Live for God on Purpose” has been the congregation’s driving call. The church pursued its primary work in preaching the Gospel and promoting Christian growth to the community through evangelistic efforts, youth programming, vacation Bible school, and summer outreach services. Missionary Temple Ministries, now led by pastors Keith and Deborah Moncrief, continues the mission work in the East Liberty area and throughout the City of Pittsburgh by supporting local organizations as well as international missions in China, Africa, and Haiti. The congregation has been a long time supporter of EECM, including serving as co-host of our 2013 Martin Luther King Celebration. Missionary Temple Ministries will also be Community House’s closest neighbor!
