administrative office (at the 1st floor) by 3rd week of December /

3. Lab Rotation and Allocation of the thesis advisor A. A Student
will be assigned to a thesis advisor to get advise on his or her
paper for the degree among the professors
within our school.
B. The thesis advisor assignment should be done until the 1st week
of 1st semester and submit [FORM NO.1, FORM NO.1-2] at the
administrative office.

8. Research-based Degree Program Research-based Degree Program
allows students to earn credits through advanced research courses,
which alternates the coursework with the research outputs related
to the field of interest. The students participating in this
program is also required to publish article as a first author to be
qualified for dissertation examination.

Course
Registration
- Register for “Advanced Research in Biomedical Science ” (3
credits), and perform the research project according to the
research plan. The academic advisor provides regular follow-ups for
the registered student.
Grading
- The course is assessed in P/F scale, and the final assessment for
the research process and the outcomes is decided by the Graduate
School Committee at the end of each semester.
Interim
Evaluation
- The interim evaluation of the research outcome and the English
public presentation on the continuing research plan will decide on
the possibility of continuing the participation in ‘Research-based
Degree Program’.
- Evaluation period is 3rd semester(1 semester before completion)
for Ph.D students and 4th semester(2 semesters before the minimum
registration for completion) for Combined program students.
- The students who qualify in the interim evaluation are allowed to
continue with the ‘Research-based Degree Program’. The students who
fail to qualify will return to the regular degree program and will
take extra coursework in the following semester.(The credits
already completed through the ‘Research-based Degree Program’ will
be valid, while it would not be allowed take extra credits in the
advanced research courses in the following semester.)
- The evaluation will be carried out by a independent committee
designated from the Graduate School Committee (3 professors
including advisor)
- The qualifying criteria is 70 points or above and at least 2
professors’ consent in passing.
Withdrawal
- Students who withdraw from this program will receive credits for
the ‘Advanced research’courses already completed. After the
withdrawal, the added credits of ’Directed Study for Thesis
Subject’ and ‘Advanced Research in Biomedical Science’ which
exceeds the requirement will not be acknowledged for credits for
completion.
- Withdrawal Period: Until the 3rd semester for Ph.D students/ 4th
semester for combined program students.
- Please submit the ‘Witdrawal request from Research-based Degree
Program’ to the administrative office.

10. Qualifying Exam (for Ph.D/Combined Course of Biomedical Science
Div.)
* It is necessary to submit the application through GLS in order to
register for the Comprehensive Exam. * After receiving more than 27
credits (39 credits for the Combined Course), students must take
the Qualifying Exam(QE) which requires a Abstract[FORM NO.11-2],
Proposal[FORM NO.12], and Oral Test on a topic chosen by the
student. * The topic of the QE must not be in the same field or
must be at least only marginally related to the student's thesis
area (We recommend that students choose a topic that is not in his
or her advisor’s professional area). When a student submits the
Abstract, he/she must submit the title and the abstract (or at
least one paragraph description) of his/her thesis project
together. This is to verify if his/her qualifying title is not
related to the thesis title.
1) One-page Abstract
Students must submit the Abstract[FORM NO.11-2](do not exceed
maximum 150 words) by 2nd week of February / 2nd week of August and
they must submit the One-page Abstract to the Administrative
office.
2) Full Proposal
a) Students who have passed the evaluation process for the Abstract
must write a Full Proposal [FORM NO.12] in English and submit it to
QC members by e-mail.
b) They must confirm that all three QC members have received
it.
QC: Qualifying Committee
3) Oral Test
a) Students who have passed the "Full Proposal" must arrange the
time and the place for the Oral Exam after discussing with the QC
members.
b) The Oral Exam must be finished by 1st week of April / 1st week
of October.
4) Notice
a) The student who is willing to gain the Ph.D degree should pass
the Qualifying Exam before proceeding the final dissertation
examination for the degree.
b) The candidate of Qualifying Exam must drop by the administrative
office and fill out the QE application form.

11. The Dissertation Examination for the degree A. The preliminary
dissertation examination for the degree
- The dissertation examination for the degree consists of the
preliminary dissertation examination and the final dissertation
examination for the degree.
- The preliminary dissertation examination should be done at least
one semester earlier before the final dissertation examination and
only the qualified individuals of the preliminary dissertation
examination can apply for the final.
- The committee of the dissertation examination is composed of 3
members (5 members for the Ph.D and Combined Course) including the
chairman of the committee.

elected within the AC (the student’s advisor is not eligible for
this position).

least once after the student passes the Comprehensive Exam (before
final defense). 2) The ACM decides the time when the student can
start writing his/her thesis. 3) The ACM arranges the date of
his/her thesis defense with the student.

discussion with his/her AC members 2) The student needs to submit
the complete thesis manuscript (at the status of just before

prepare a 15 minutes-talk and participate in the following 1
hour-question period.
D. Public Seminar 1) After the student is evaluated and proven to
possess his/her qualification as a Ph.D. degree, he/she must
attend
the public seminar and present his/her work. (will be held on every
December at the SKKU) 2) A chairperson at this public seminar will
be his/her thesis advisor. 3) Immediately after the public talk, a
brief congratulation ceremony is recommended.
3. The research enrollment of the Ph.D / Combined course
A. Those who completed the course but have not passed the final
defense yet should apply the research enrollment until he acquire
the degree successively, with the maximum 4 times.
B. The research enrollers can use the school facilities like the
registrants.
