As the leading manufacturer of “Building materials for life,” SCHWENK Putztechnik GmbH & Co. KG has produced sustainable, ecological plaster and mortar products for more than 160 years in seven state-of-the-art plants. Natural raw materials such as sandstone and limestone, marble and quartz are the basis of the mineral products and systems.

In 2012, SCHWENK Putztechnik was looking for a way to boost its palletising performance in their plants in Eigeltingen and Allmendingen while at the same time optimising the quality of the stacking results. The BEUMER Group delivered an innovative solution to meet this need – a latest-generation palletising system.

As one of the leading international intra-logistics specialists, the BEUMER Group offers a comprehensive product range for conveying, loading, bagging, palletising, packaging, sorting and distribution. Many years of experience in the building materi-als industry and extensive knowledge of product specifications enable the BEUMER Group to develop and build optimally coordinated solutions and systems.

The innovative twin-belt turning device can be used modularly in palletisers with

a performance rate of up to 2,500 bags per hour.

PROdUct cHangE WitHOUt cHangEOVER tiMEThe innovative twin-belt turning device can be used modularly in all low and medium performance palletising systems of the BEUMER paletpac® line – with clear advantages for routine production: “Already during development of the twin-belt turning device, the goal was to minimise the system changeover times through innovative technology. Thanks to automation of the product change, downtimes are completely avoided,” says Bernhard Temming, Service Manager for Palletising and Packaging Technology of the BEUMER Group. Use of this ad-vanced BEUMER technology significantly reduces total cost of ownership.

“When it comes to stackability,” Schmidt continues, “the twin-belt turning device provides an immense advantage over conventional turning processes. Because the system components move the bags without using mechanical parts, the bagged products are no longer deformed. This results in a correspondingly positive packing pattern and increases the stack-ability of pallets. BEUMER has thus de-veloped an innovative process for layer forming that is currently unparalleled on the market in this design and represents a clear unique selling point.”

nOtaBlE nOiSE REdUctiOnIn addition to profitability and performance, during development of these system components great value was also placed on low noise emission. While other processes acoustically affect the work environment because mechanical parts are being used, the powerful twin-belt turning device demonstrates its strengths especially quietly in daily operations. This provides a better work environment and benefits the specialised SCHWENK personnel in their daily workflow.

tHE cHallEngEIn the manufacturing process for dry mortars and base plasters, it is important to SCHWENK Putztechnik to produce homogeneous mixtures and to ensure smooth conveying, bagging and packag-ing. This also includes the turning of the filled bags into the correct position for the packing pattern. Steps must be taken to ensure that the bags’ external appearance is not impaired and the high-grade products reach the customers in crafts and trades and specialised building material dealers in a presentable condition.

tWO nEW PallEtiSing SYStEMSIn order to boost its palletising perfor-mance, SCHWENK Putztechnik chose two palletising systems from the BEUMER Group: The palletisers of the BEUMER paletpac® line have an output capacity of 1,800 and 2,500 bags per hour. Both systems are equipped with the innova-tive twin-belt turning device that handles products gently.

gREatER EFFiciEncYSCHWENK Putztechnik relies on BEUMER to lastingly boost its performance profile and improve the stacking result. “Cus-tomers have two key requirements in the area of palletising technology. One is efficiency and the other is the configuration of the stack. When it comes to efficiency, with the twin-belt turning device BEUMER has created a system that has an advan-tage over conventional solutions in that the lifecycle costs have been considerably reduced. One reason is the lower operating costs, because compressed air is no longer necessary, and a second reason is significantly lower maintenance and repair costs, thanks to the elimination of mechanical parts,” explains Peter Schmidt, Area Manager for southern Germany of the BEUMER Group. SCHWENK Putztechnik uses

a reliable palletising system

from the BEUMER Group:

the BEUMER paletpac®.

As it forms the packing pat-

terns, the system is especially

reliable and precise. Moreover,

it reduces the impact on the

environment thanks to its low

energy consumption and lowers

operating costs.

In addition to efficiency and

optimisation of maintenance,

SCHWENK Putztechnik focuses

on a presentable stacking result.

The bags are turned into the correct position by means

of two separately operated conveyor belts.

“ The twin-belt turning device has the advantage that the bag enters the system and is gently turned without being deformed. Thanks to the sensitive bag handling, I get an attractive pallet pattern – and that’s very positive for our sales.”

StaBlE StacK FORMatiOnAs the heart of the palletising system, the BEUMER twin-belt turning device prepares the layers at two sites of SCHWENK Putztechnik. At the plants in Eigeltingen and Allmendingen, the unique process ensures gentle bag handling and provides optimum conditions for stable stack formation.

This innovative system component uses two parallel, separately operated conveyor belts driven at different speeds. The intelligent control of the twin-belt turning device incorporates the physical charac-teristics of the packaging units to achieve precise positioning depending on the packing pattern.

If the bag size changes, all relevant parameters are recorded and controlled simply via software. This eliminates time-consuming changeover procedures.

PROJEct SUPPORt BaSEd On PaRtnERSHiPTogether with SCHWENK Putztechnik, BEUMER looked for a solution that was geared to the individual challenges in the production plants in Allmendingen and Eigeltingen. The desire was low-mainte-nance, low-emission layer preparation. The response of the BEUMER experts is the powerful twin-belt turning device, which gently prepares sensitive products for the palletising process. The whole

implementation was realised by an experienced BEUMER team – from project planning to assembly. Many years of experience in research and development guarantee individualised concepts, short installation times and powerful systems in continuous operation for BEUMER customers.

Now that the project has been completed, the BEUMER team continues to support SCHWENK Putztechnik in optimising and maintaining the system. BEUMER service – 24/7.
