About CAG:

The California Association for the Gifted (CAG) is an organization of parents, educators, and community members who strive to improve education for individuals who demonstrate giftedness or gifted potential. The organization disseminates information, encourages advocacy and awareness, and sponsors activities significant to gifted education. We strongly urge all parents and teachers to join CAG, in order to support gifted education in California schools! Learn more at www.cagifted.org .

CAG SLR:

CAG—like many state educational agencies and organizations—has divided the state into eleven regions. The Santa Lucia Region comprises Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito counties. CAG SLR sponsors a number of activities throughout the school year, for teachers, students and parents. Many are professional development for teachers and administrators, to better understand the needs of gifted and talented students and how to meet those needs effectively. All “GATE Advocates” (teachers, parents, administrators, community members) are invited to our Advocates Meetings, of which we hold five each year. Learn more at www.cagsantalucia.org .

How About the Ninth Annual StudenttoStudent Conference – 2017! o That’s right—with the huge success of today’s conference, we hope to be able to offer this again

next year! o If you’d like to help organize the conference, or volunteer on the day of the conference, let us

know! o If you have any other ideas about how to make this conference better, we want to hear them! o If you have ideas for a workshop you’d like to present next year, start working on it!

Tips for Being a Good Conference Attendee

For Presenters:

1. Plan your time carefully:

Start on time. Get everyone’s attention before you begin.

Introduce yourself and your topic.

Give a brief overview of what will happen in your workshop.

Jump into the topic!

Enjoy yourself! Have Fun!

Allow 5 minutes at the end for questions.

2. End on time. This is important so everyone can get to their next workshop on time!

3. Clean up so the next presentation can set up.

4. Take pride in your accomplishment!

5. Make Connections, Network!

Introduce yourself to people you don’t know. Ask about their interests and share your own. Use the Networking Page (page 19) to exchange emails and other contact information.

For Conference Attendees:

1. Come ready to learn from the presenters. 2. If a workshop is full, find another one that is close by. 3. Once you choose a workshop stay for the entire presentation. 4. Encourage the presenter with your full attention and respectful listening. 5. Try not to interrupt the presenter until they are ready for questions. 6. Ask if you can help the presenter set up or clean up, so everyone can move on to the next workshop. 7. Network… meet new people… share your interests. (Use the networking page on page 19).

For Parent or Chaperones: Tips for helping Student Presenters:

1. Help them to start and end on time. 2. If room is full, please tell other students to find another workshop—quickly. (If there are parents taking

spaces and students wanting to get in, please ask the parents to give up their space for students.) 3. Remind students to introduce themselves and topic. 4. Ask your student when and how they want to be reminded of how much time they have remaining. 5. Allow for at least 5 minutes of Questions and Answers. 6. Help students get cleaned up so the next student can get set up.

Gifted students are not to be ignored in the new ESSA! Q: What is the the ESSA? The ESSA or Every Student Succeeds Act (formerly known as No Child Left Behind and ESEA) is the federal legislation that

guides K12 public education in the United States. Approximately $21 billion in federal funds under ESEA is distributed to the

states and school districts each year through complex formulas based on student population and poverty and through individual

grant programs.

Q: Is anything required of states related to gifted and talented students? Yes. There are two new requirements:

On the state report cards: States must include student achievement data at each achievement level that is disaggregated by

student subgroup (e.g., lowincome, race, English learners, gender, and students with disabilities). Previously, states provided

detailed information for students performing at the proficient level and below. Now, states also will have to include information

on students achieving at the advanced level.

In applying for Title II professional development funds, states must include information about how they plan to improve the

skills of teachers and other school leaders that will enable them to identify gifted and talented students and provide instruction

based on the student’s need.

Q: Is anything required of districts related to gifted and talented students? Yes. There are two new requirements:

Districts (“local education agencies” in ESSA) must collect, disaggregate, and report their student achievement data at each

achievement level, as the states are required to do.

Districts that receive Title II professional development funds must use the money to address the learning needs of all students.

ESSA specifically says that “all students” includes gifted and talented students.

Q: What else is noteworthy in ESSA? There are several other provisions in ESSA that support gifted and talented students:

For the first time, ESSA specifically notes that districts may use Title I funds to identify and serve gifted and talented students.

ESSA now allows states to use computer adaptive assessments as the format for state assessments used for accountability

purposes and authorizes grant funding to states to develop such assessments.

Districts may use their Title II professional development funds to provide training on gifted educationspecific instructional

practices, such as enrichment, acceleration, and curriculum compacting . From the National Association for the Gifted Council NAGC For more information on ESSA, visit the legislation update section

of the NAGC website. Contact Jane Clarenbach, NAGC Director of Public Education, with questions. [email protected] or
