“The potential for cost savings was the main driver behind our decision to adopt VoIP, with such a large volume of outgoing phone calls, any reduction would be a sizeable one.“

4 Case Study - TV3

TV3 channels cost-savings with eircomLaunched in 1998, TV3 is Ireland’s fi rst independent commercial broadcaster. It operates the channels TV3, 3e, and the online service TV3.ie. Offering viewers a quality alternative to the country’s state-owned networks, TV3 has delivered a mixture of news, current affairs, mini-series and Irish-produced programming. TV3 is eager to continue to expand its business, but in these lean times the broadcaster must do so in a cost-effective way.

Communications plays a critical role in TV3’s business. Each day staff make hundreds of calls to contacts, suppliers, researchers and reporters, which contributes to a substantial monthly phone bill for TV3. As the high call volume is necessary to developing quality programs and driving TV3’s business, Chief Engineer José de Freitas needed to fi nd a solution that would deliver signifi cant cost effi ciencies.

José approached eircom, which already provided TV3’s two voice-only PRA (ISDN) circuits, seeking a solution that could reduce call costs without compromising on call quality. eircom suggested replacing one of the PRA (ISDN) circuits with an IP connection; this would let the broadcaster use Business IP voice, the nationwide voice over IP (VoIP) service from eircom.

The transition was smooth. eircom engineers simply connected TV3’s existing IP-PABX to the eircom Business IP network and the cost savings were soon apparent. With all its outbound call traffi c now using Business IP voice, the broadcaster is forecasting that it will realise a 30 percent reduction in its call costs.

“The potential for cost savings was the main driver behind our decision to adopt VoIP,” says José . “With such a large volume of outgoing phone calls, any reduction would be a sizeable one.”

Call quality reinforces brand values José stresses that maintaining call quality was also high on his priority list. The TV3 brand needs to be refl ected through all areas of operations including calls made to suppliers, reporters and other contacts. The eircom Business IP network underlying the voice service has in-built Quality of Service, which protects call quality & security.

“Reliable voice traffi c is important to us, and so far the quality of the VoIP calls has been very good,” he says, “In fact, most of our employees haven’t even noticed that anything has changed, which is perhaps the best compliment for new technology.”

In the longer term, the strategic investment in IP will also provide a foundation for rolling out data services in the future, he adds. “In the next few years, if we need to introduce other data services such as high-bandwidth internet connectivity, our investment in an IP connection from eircom means this will be easier to do,” he concludes.
