Deep within a well-forested park,there grew a tall and leafy oak tree.Its trunk was strong and its brancheswere thick and wide. On one of thelower branches sat a new nest. Two

robins had chosen this place to starta home. Mama Robin had laid four beautiful blue eggs. Day and nightshe covered them with her body sothey would stay cozy and warm.Papa Robin worked hard to findfood for Mama Robin while she

tended to the eggs.

En un parque muy poblado de árbolesse erguía un roble alto y frondoso.Tenía el tronco fuerte y las ramasgruesas y extensas. En una de las más bajas había un nido nuevo. Dos petirrojos habían escogido aquel sitio

para formar su hogar. La mamá pusocuatro hermosos huevecitos azules.Día y noche los cubría con su cuerpo para mantenerlos calentitos. El papátrabajaba duro buscando alimento para la mamá mientras ella cuidabalos huevecitos.



Finally, one day, the four little eggscracked open and out came four littlebaby robins. They didn’t look much likerobins to begin with, but in a short timethey had fluffy feathers and had all

opened their eyes for a look at the big,wide world around them.

Mama and Papa Robin gave them allnames. They called the two boys Billyand Reddy, and they called the two girlsCherry and Chirpy.

Un día, los cuatro cascarones serompieron, y salieron cuatro pajarillos. Al principio no tenían pinta de petirrojos; pero al pocotiempo les crecieron plumas sedosasy todos abrieron los ojos para mirar el ancho y fascinante mundo que losrodeaba.

Papá y mamá les pusieron nombres.A los dos machitos los llamaronPicotón y Colorao, y a las doshembritas, Guinda y Chispita.



One of the first lessons of life that allthese little baby robins needed to learnwas to have better manners. They oftenfought among themselves over whowould get the best or the most food,

and they never said “thank you” toPapa or Mama Robin, who workedvery hard to find food for all of them.No matter how much their parentstalked to them and tried to help themget along, they were becoming quitenaughty little birds, quarreling and

teasing, and pushing and shoving muchof the time. Then one day somethinghappened that changed all that.

Casi lo primero que tuvieron queaprender aquellos pajaritos fueron buenos modales. Con frecuencia se peleaban por la mejor comida o elmayor bocado. Nunca daban las

gracias a papá y mamá, que bregaban mucho para encontrarlesalimento. Por más que sus padresles hablaban y procurabanenseñarles a llevarse bien, los pequeños eran cada vez másrevoltosos. Discutían, se fastidiaban

y se empujaban. Hasta que un día pasó algo que cambió las cosas.



Mama and Papa Robin were gettingready to fly out to search for somebreakfast for everyone. This morningeveryone was extra hungry.

“Papa, can you bring me a nice, fat,juicy worm?” pleaded Billy.

“I’ll try, Billy,” said Papa Robin, “butit’s not always easy to find worms,because the ground is hard and dry nowand the worms are hidingdeep underground.”

“Oh, I don’t like worms,” whinedChirpy. “They’re too long and squigglyto swallow. Papa, can you just bring ussome bugs?”

Papá y mamá se aprestaban a levantar vuelo para salir a buscar comida.Aquella mañana todos tenían máshambre que de costumbre.

“Papá, ¿me traes una lombriz biengorda y jugosa?” rogó Picotón.

“Lo intentaré,” dijo el papá. “Pero nosiempre es fácil encontrar lombrices. Latierra está dura y seca, y las lombrices seesconden muy hondo.

“A mí no me gusta comer lombrices,”refunfuñó Chispita. “Son muy largas y

resbaladizas. Papá, ¿por qué no nostraes mejor insectos?”



“No way,” piped in Cherry. “Mostbugs are horrible tasting. I’d rather have some nice fresh berries.”

“Children, remember your manners,”Mama Robin gently reminded her hungry brood. “When you ask for things, you need to be kind and politeand say things like, ‘Please, Mama andPapa, could you bring me a niceworm?’ When there is food you donot like, you should still try to eat itwith thankful hearts because God has

supplied it and helped your father andme find it for you.”

“¡Ni hablar!” interrumpió Guinda. “Lamayoría de los insectos saben atroz.Prefiero unas bayas bien tiernas.”

“Chicos, cuidado con sus modales,”recordó la mamá a los hambrientos

pajarillos. “Cuando pidan algo, tienenque ser amables y bien educados. Digan:‘Papá o mamá, por favor, ¿puedentraerme una rica lombriz?’ Cuando hayaalgo de comer que no les guste,esfuércense por comerlo con gratitud.Tengan en cuenta que Dios

lo ha provisto y nos ayudó a papá y a mía encontrarlo para ustedes.”





“I guess it would be good if we couldgive each one just what they want. We

will have to do a lot of extra searching,but if it will make them happy, it maybe worth it. Come on, let’s go see whatwe can find,” Papa Robin said at last.

Mama Robin usually preferred to staynear the nest and look for food close

by so she could watch over her youngflock. The problem was that it wasgetting harder to find food near thenest. Mama knew that today she andPapa would both have togo quite far away to find all thedifferent things her children were

demanding.

“Habrá que darle a cada uno lo que legusta. Nos va a costar mucho más

esfuerzo; pero si así van a quedarsesatisfechos, puede que valga la pena.Salgamos a ver qué encontramos,”dijo el papá al final.

La mamá prefería quedarse cerca delnido buscando alimento. De esa

forma podía vigilar a sus pequeñuelos. Lo malo era que cadavez se hacía más difícil hallar comidacerca. La mamá entendió que ese díaambos tendrían que alejarse mucho siquerían satisfacer los caprichos de suscrías.



“Papa and I will have to fly quite far awayto find all this different food for youtoday. Please try to be patient and kind toeach other while we are gone. Okay?”

“Okay,” all the young robins chirped.

“Papá y yo tendremos que emprender ulargo vuelo para encontrar lo quequieren comer hoy. Tengan paciencia y pórtense bien unos con otros mientras estamos. ¿De acuerdo?”

“De acuerdo,” trinaron todos los petirrojos.



So Papa and Mama Robin went flyingoff to the far side of the park. PapaRobin was the first one to spot a verylarge earthworm wiggling his way upto the surface and into the grass. Withgreat speed he flew down and grabbedthe worm in his beak. The wormresisted with all its might, and PapaRobin pulled and pulled, but theworm was too strong and was gettingaway. Mama saw the struggle so shejoined the fray and together theypulled and pulled, and at last, the great

big worm let go and the happy robinsflew back to the nest with their verylarge catch.

Así el papá y la mamá se fueronvolando hasta el más apartado rincóndel parque. El papá fue el primero enavistar una lombriz de tierra grandotaque asomaba la cabeza por entre lahierba. Bajó volando a gran velocidady agarró a la lombriz con el pico. Lalombriz resistió con todas sus fuerzas.El papá tiró y jaló, pero la lombriz eratan fuerte que se le escabullía. Lamamá vio la lucha y fue también aayudar con el pico. Entre los dostiraron y tiraron hasta que lograronarrancarla de la tierra. Felicesregresaron volandoal nido con su grandísima presa.



“Oh look! Papa found my worm!”Billy chirped. “It looks like I’m going toget my breakfast first!” Billy opened hisvery large mouth expecting Papa to dropthe whole worm in.

“Billy,” Mama Robin told him, “this wormis big enough for all of you. Papa and Iwill keep looking, but it takes quite a longtime to fly across the park and back. Youchildren will just have toshare this worm until we getback.”

“¡Miren! ¡Papá encontró milombriz!” trinó Picotón. “¡Seré el primero en desayunar!” Y abriómucho el pico para que su papá lemetiera dentro toda la lombriz.

“Picotón ,” le dijo la mamá, “estalombriz alcanza para todosustedes. Papá y yo seguiremos buscando; pero tardaremos un buen rato en llegar otra vez hastael extremo del parque y regresar.Por eso, chiquitines, repártanse la

lombriz y entreténganse con ellahasta que volvamos.”



Mama and Papa Robin flew off again tocontinue their search for breakfast,leaving the young birds to work out thedetails of sharing the worm amongthemselves. Well, you guessed it …

Billy didn’t want to share.“Sorry, guys, this is my worm! You allordered something else for breakfast.You’ll just have to wait your turn.Chirpy doesn’t even likeworms anyway.”

Los papás salieron volando otra vez para proseguir su búsqueda deldesayuno. Las crías decidirían cómose repartirían la presa. Pero como te puedes imaginar, Picotón resolviócomérsela toda él.

“Lo siento, chicos, ¡pero estalombriz es mía! Todos ustedes pidieron otra cosa de desayuno.Tendrán que esperar su turno. AChispita ni le gustan las lombrices.”



“But what if they can’t find anycrunchy seeds anywhere?” Reddyfretted out loud. “I will have no foodtoday and I am very hungryright now!”

“Me too,” said Cherry. “Please,Billy, let us have some of theworm too!”

“No, no, no! No way! This is myworm, and I’m going to eat it all

by myself!”

“Oye, ¿y si no encuentran semillascrocantes por ningún lado? ” dijoColorao manifestando en voz alta su preocupación. “No tendré nada quecomer en todo el día. ¡Ahora mismoya estoy muerto de hambre!”

“Yo también,” dijo Guinda. “Por favor, Picotón, ¡déjanos un poquitode lombriz!”

“¡No, no! ¡Ni hablar! ¡Es mi lombriz,y me la voy a tragar toda solito!”



That is when the great tug of war began.Billy grabbed one end of the worm andChirpy, Cherry and Reddy grabbed thether end and started pulling. Billy wasig, but he was no match for his threeiblings all pulling against him. Billyecided to climb up on the edge of theest to get better footing and yank the

worm away from the rest of them.

Cherry gasped, let go of the worm andried, “Oh, please get down, Billy! It

ooks very dangerous up there and youmight fall!”

Picotón se aferró entonces a unextremo de la lombriz, y Chispita,Guinda y Colorao agarraron la otra punta. Todos comenzaron a tirar.Picotón era grande, pero no podía consus tres hermanos, que daban tirones para el otro lado. Entonces decidióencaramarse en el borde del nido para poder hacer más fuerza.

Soltando la lombriz, Guinda abrió el pico: “¡Picotón, por favor, baja deahí! ¡Es peligroso, te vas a caer!”



Billy didn’t want to answer, becauseif he opened his beak he would let goof the worm, so he just kept onpulling. He was standing against theedge of the nest and all that was

holding him was the worm. WhenCherry let go, Billy yanked the wormwith all his might, and Reddy andChirpy lost their balance and fellforward. Billy started to fallbackwards off the edge of the nest! Heopened his beak in fright and lost hold

of the worm. Down and down Billyfell. He tried to flap his wings but itdidn’t help much, because he didn’thave all of his wing feathers yet, andbesides, he didn’t know how to fly.He landed with a “plop” on somesoft grass.

Picotón no quería responder. Si abríael pico, soltaría la lombriz. Total quesiguió dando tirones. Tenía las patitasen el borde del nido, y lo único que losostenía era la lombriz. Como vio que

Guinda la había soltado, aprovechó para tirar con todas sus fuerzas.Colorao y Chispita perdieron elequilibrio y cayeron de bruces.¡Entonces Picotón se desplomó haciaatrás! El miedo le hizo abrir el pico, perdió la lombriz y empezó a caer.

Batió las alitas, pero no sirvió demucho, pues todavía no le habíansalido todas las plumas. Además, nosabía volar.. Fue a parar sobre uncolchón de hierba. ¡Plop!



“Oh no!” squawked Reddy. “Look,Billy has fallen all the way to theground. Is he hurt?”

“I don’t think so,” said Cherry. “See,he’s getting up and hopping around.But he can’t fly yet and he is too bigfor Mama and Papa to try to lift, sohow will he ever get back inthe nest?”

Their eyes scanned the woods inevery direction to see if help couldbe found, but there was none.

“¡Retórtolas!”chilló Colorao. “Miren,Picotón ha caído al suelo. ¿Se habrálastimado?”

“No creo” dijo Guinda. “¿Ven? Se halevantado y está dando brincos. Perotodavía no sabe volar, y como es muygrande, papá y mamá no lo podrán alzar.¿Qué hará para volver al nido?”

Los pajaritos recorrieron el bosque con

la mirada buscando algo o alguien que lo pudiera ayudar; pero no avistaron nada.



“Oh no!” cried Cherry. “Look over

there, coming across the lawn this way!It’s that big mean old tomcat thatMama and Papa and all their friendshave to keep chasing away.”

“Poor Billy doesn’t see him yet, butthat old cat will soon see Billy! Wehave got to do something!” Reddy saidin his most determined voice.

“Oh dear, this doesn’t look too good.Let’s all pray for Billy!” said Chirpy.“Dear God, please keep Billy. Rescuehim from that terrible tomcat, andsomehow, help him to get back up here

in the nest.”

“¡Ay!” exclamó Guinda. “¡Miren allá,

entre la hierba! ¡Se acerca ese gatomalo que papá, mamá y todos susamigos siempre andan ahuyentando!”

“El pobre Picotón todavía no lo havisto, ¡pero ese gato bribón lo va adescubrir enseguida! ¡Tenemos quehacer algo!” dijo Colorao con

determinación.

“Uy, esto no luce nada bien.¡Recemos todos por Picotón!” propuso Chispita. “Jesús, guarda aPicotón. Rescátalo de ese temiblegato y haz que pueda regresar al

nido.”



Down on the ground, little Billy washaving a few troubled thoughts of hisown. He had no worm. He had no nicewarm nest. His parents were gone and hewas all alone on the ground, the mostdangerous place in the world for baby birds.

Billy peeked up above the grass andlooked around. His eyes spotted a largegray tomcat making its way towards him.His heart froze. I’m in serious trouble, he said to himself. Billy decided to praytoo. He prayed harder than he had ever

prayed before, and he was very, verypolite when he talked to Jesus.

Abajo, en el suelo, el pequeño Picotóntenía sus propias preocupaciones. Habí perdido la lombriz. Se había caído de scómodo nidito. Sus papás no estaban, yse encontraba solito, indefenso, en elsuelo, el sitio más peligroso para un pajarillo.

aprieto, pensó. También él decidió oraLo hizo con más ganas que nunca, y sedirigió a Jesús con muchísimo respeto



“Please dear Jesus, I am so, so sorryfor being a bad, selfish, grabby andunthankful bird. I promise I’ll do mybest to learn my lesson. Oh, pleasekeep me safe. And please, somehowhelp me get back into the nest.”

Closer and closer the old tomcat cameto where Billy sat, still hiding in thegrass. Suddenly, Chirpy spotted Papaflying towards them, and Mama behindhim. Chirpy cried out in her loudestvoice, “Hurry! Hurry! Billy is introuble and there’s a cat coming!”

“Jesús, perdóname por haberme portado tan mal y haber sido egoísta ydesagradecido. Te prometo que meesforzaré por cambiar. Protégeme, telo ruego. Y por favor, Jesús, haz que pueda regresar al nido.”

El gato se acercaba cada vez más allugar en que se hallaba Picotón,escondido entre la hierba. De repente,Chispita advirtió que su papá volabahacia ellos, seguido de su mamá, ygritó lo más fuerte que pudo:

“¡De prisa! Picotón está en peligro. ¡Seacerca un gato!”



Papa’s sharp eyes soon spotted the catand could see he was nearly to wherepoor Billy was trembling in the grass.Papa let out a loud, angry cry and divedstraight down at the cat and pecked his

head and flapped his wings noisily.Then Mama attacked the cat as well,swooping in for a quick peck and thenescaping before the cat could catch her.The cat was so surprised by this suddenattack from the air that he raced off across the park.

Papá, con su aguda vista, no tardó endescubrir al gato: estaba a punto deencontrar al pobre Picotón, quetemblaba de miedo. Papá trinó conmucho vigor y enojo y se abalanzóhacia el minino. Dio muchos aletazos yle picoteó la cabeza.

Instantes después, mamá también atacóal gato. En vuelo rasante logró darle un picotazo y escapar antes que el felino latrapara. Éste, sorprendido por tanrepentino ataque desde el aire, echó a

correr por el parque.



His brother and sisters gave a sigh of relief. Billy was safe for the moment.He wouldn’t starve because Mama andPapa would find him and feed him onthe ground. But the ground was still a

very dangerous place and it would besome time before Billy could fly.

Then the miracle happened. On theother side of the open space beside thegreat oak tree, an old man had beenresting on a park bench. When he sawthe robins attack the cat, he knew that

they must be protecting one of their babies.

The kind old man rose from his benchand strolled over to the oak tree. Itdidn’t take him long to spot Billyhiding in the grass.

Los hermanitos suspiraron aliviados.Picotón estaba a salvo por elmomento. No se iba a morir dehambre, porque papá y mamá le podíandar de comer en el suelo. Pero seguíaestando en un sitio muy peligroso, y

pasaría algún tiempo antes queaprendiera a volar.

Ocurrió entonces un milagro. Al otrolado del claro que había junto al granroble, un anciano descansaba en un banco. Cuando vio a los petirrojosatacando al gato, intuyó que debían deestar defendiendo a una de sus crías.

El amable anciano se levantó y caminólentamente hacia el roble. No tardó endescubrir a Picotón escondido en lahierba.



“You look quite healthy and perky,” theold man told little Billy, as he kneltdown to pick him up. “Is your nestsomewhere nearby?” Then he heardlittle Chirpy chirping loudly up in the

tree. She was so worried about Billy.“There you go, little fellow,” said theold man, as he pushed Billy back intothe nest. He smiled at Mama and PapaRobin and continued on his walk.

“Se te ve muy saludable y vivaz,” dijoel anciano mientras se inclinaba pararecogerlo. “¿Está por aquí tu nido?”Entonces oyó un trino agudo que provenía de una rama. Era Chispita,

preocupada por Picotón.“¡Listo!” dijo el anciano mientrascolocaba a Picotón de vuelta en elnido. Sonrió a los papás petirrojos y prosiguió con su paseo.



It’s so good to be home!” said Billy.I’m sorry, everyone! I was so selfishnd unloving. I really learned a lessonhe hard way today!”

We all learned a lesson today,” saidChirpy. “I feel like we almost grew upn one day.”

Come on, everyone,” said Reddy.Look, we still have a nice big wormo eat.”

“¡Qué bueno es estar otra vez en casa!” pió Picotón. “¡Perdónenme! Fui muyegoísta y muy poco amoroso, ¡pero yaescarmenté!”

“Todos hemos aprendido mucho hoy,”dijo Chispita. “¡Me da la impresión deque en un solo día nos hemos hechomucho mayores!”

“Vamos,” dijo Colorao. “Todavíatenemos una lombrizota que podemossaborear.”



So they all shared the worm with oneanother. Mama and Papa Robin lookedon proudly and were so pleased to seethem all behaving so nicely. From thenon, the young robins made a big effort

to be kind to each other and they werevery polite to their parents. Whenever they were given some yummy food,they all chorused a big “Thank you!”

Así pues, todos se repartieron lalombriz. Papá y mamá miraban conorgullo a sus crías, muy contentos deque se portaran bien. A partir de esedía, los pequeños petirrojos seesforzaron mucho por ser amables y

tuvieron muy buenos modales con sus papás. Cada vez que recibían undelicioso bocado, trinaban al unísono:“¡Muchas gracias!”
