Dear Town of Jupiter Council Members, As part of its lease with the Town, El Sol is pleased to submit its fourth quarterly report for 2010. This report includes cumulative information for the entire year. In the table below, please find highlights from 2010:
Labor The Center operated with a 26% worker placement rate. On a daily basis, 107 workers attended and 20 were hired on average. In 2010, a total of 7,253 were placed in jobs, compared with 6,923 in 2009.
Education 6,113 workers attended daytime ESL classes compared to a total of 4,518 workers in 2009. 116 students advanced a level of English in our daytime ESL classes. At night, 160 students advanced, 65% of the students who enrolled. In 2010 a total of 63 students completed the computer skills course and 129 attended vocational workshops.
Community Service
In 2010, El Sol workers volunteered a total of 959 hours, valued at a contribution of $18,720.
Health El Sol volunteers and volunteer doctors helped a total of 480 individuals with various health needs.
Food In 2010, we served a total of 25,288 meals with an average of 70 meals per day.
Personal Counseling
El Sol helped a total of 669 cases and channeled their needs to the proper agencies.
Value of Services This quarter the value of services provided by El Sol totaled $883,044.92.
We are proud to share the development of our programs and the positive impact they are having in Jupiter. The impact of our programs and services is detailed here, and when appropriate, there is a comparison to previous years’ statistics. According to the Florida Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, the value of volunteer contributions is estimated at $19.52 per hour. This is the amount we assign to calculate the value of our programs. On February 17th, 2011, the Board of Directors voted for a new executive committee which consists of: Ed Ricci (President), Roger Buckwalter (Vice-President), Sheila Hirsch (Treasurer), and Mike Richmond (Secretary). II. PROGRAMS 1. LABOR PROGRAM
a. Workers Statistics: A total of two thousand and one-hundred and two (2,102) workers are registered with El Sol as of December 31st, 2010. Workers Attendance:
In 2010, worker attendance at the center totaled 39,045, compared with 49,907 in 2009. On average, the center served 107 workers per day in 2010.
Workers Hired: In 2010, a total of seven thousand two hundred and fifty-three (7,253) were placed in jobs for 2010, compared with a placement of six thousand nine hundred and twenty-three (6,923) in 2009. The Center operated with a 26% worker placement and, on average, 20 workers were hired per day.

There are twenty-two (22) countries of origin represented among the workers of El Sol. The most common countries of origin are Guatemala (66%), Mexico (21%) and USA (8%). Compared to 2009, Guatemala (67%), Mexico (21%) and USA (5%).

b. Employers Statistics A total of four thousand five hundred and forty-four (4,544) employers are registered with El Sol as of December 31st, 2010. In 2010, a total of 906 employers registered to use our services.

Employers’ Needs: The majority of job requests and most common needs around the community were (in descending order): landscaping, moving, general labor, housekeeping, painting, digging, construction, and carpentry.
2. EDUCATION
a. English as a Second Language (ESL) Nighttime ESL program
EL Sol partners with the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University (FAU) and Palm Beach State College (PBSC) to offer a three-level ESL program to the Jupiter community three nights per week. Classes incorporate English vocabulary and grammar with life skills and, as a result, classes are presented in a way that students simultaneously acquire language skills and practical knowledge that improves their quality of life. Moreover, being that most of the teachers are American college students, the program offers a rich cultural and language interchange.
The topics covered in class were related to employment, healthy living and US concept of time. Volunteers also provided a youth leadership program each night so that parents who would otherwise be unable to attend class had an opportunity to learn English.
In 2010, a total of 160 students advanced a level of English proficiency, 65% of the students advanced. We hosted three semesters one in Spring, Summer, and Fall. Below is a breakdown of enrollment and advancement:

Daytime English Classes
El Sol offers a satellite program of Jupiter High School’s Adult Education, Monday- Fridays. Students include workers who register in our center to look for work and community members who are unable to attend the nighttime options available.
In 2010, 6,113 workers attended daytime ESL classes compared to a total of 4,518 workers that attended in 2009. This represents a 26% increase in attendance in our daytime ESL classes. A monthly breakdown is as follows:

On average 25 students participated daily. In 2010, we were able to test students and measure their progress. A total of 116 students advanced to the next level of English proficiency in our daytime ESL classes. The monthly breakdown is as follows:
In 2010, Felipe Hernandez, a student from Guatemala learned how to read and write. Jose Guadalupe Hernandez who had only completed 3rd grade in his native country has finished elementary and is working to complete High School. Both students belong to
Plazas Comunitarias which is an adult basic education program organized by the Mexican National Institute of Adult Education (INEA) that provides Spanish-speakers with the opportunity to learn to read and write, and complete elementary, middle and high school education.
Four community volunteers teach these classes on Thursdays and Fridays from 7 – 9 PM. A total of 91 students attended. Student attendance for 2010 was as follows:

c. Financial Literacy
Representatives from RBC Bank, Wachovia, and Bank of America gave a monthly class on different banking topics. Students learned the benefits of opening a savings account, the importance of maintaining good credit, and how to recover money from their accounts if they return to their home country.
d. Family Literacy El Sol has partnered with The School District of Palm Beach County’s Family Literacy Program to offer family literacy classes. The Family Literacy Program is comprised of four components, Adult Education, Preschool Education, Parenting and PACT Activities (Parent and Child Together). The program runs from Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30AM to 12:00PM. This program is impacting four-teen families. The Palm Beach Library System participated with the Family Literacy program by giving Story Time for parents and their kids and giving away books for the families. Also, the Parents received a special lecture on HIV/AIDS, nutrition, and spine health.

e. Vocational Training In 2010, 129 workers received training in a variety of different fields including moving, painting, housecleaning, and landscaping. Each class introduced new skills while emphasizing workplace safety and employee responsibilities.

f. Computer Literacy
Nighttime Computer Skills Class
In the fall, a record number of 32 Computer students graduated. There were two different groups (one on Monday and the other one on Friday). Some students, who wanted to advance even more, attended both classes.
The classes introduce students to basic computer skills such as using Microsoft Word, the internet, and
introduction to Power Point. Students also learned how to create an e-mail account to communicate with their relatives and friends.
In 2010 a total of 63 students completed the computer skills course.

g. Spanish Classes for English Speakers
A core group of six community members has met every Tuesday morning in 2010. The class has concentrated on basic grammar rules and vocabulary building activities.

El Sol coordinates monthly community service events in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Solid Waste Authorities and other community partners. In 2010, El Sol workers volunteered a total of 959 hours, valued at a contribution of $18,720.

4. LEGAL Below is a break down of cases taken by the legal team in 2010:

HEALTH Through our Heath initiatives we seek to increase awareness and understanding about health issues among our community by providing educational seminars and health fairs; and also to provide referrals for individuals with serious healthcare needs. 6. FOOD
Every day El Sol provides coffee and pastries for breakfast, and a hot meal for lunch. This is possible with the help of our volunteers and donations from various local businesses and organizations including Publix, St. Vincent De Paul, St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Mariner Sands, JL Cares, and more. In 2010, we served a total of 25,288 meals with an average of 70 meals per day, compared to 37,836 meals in 2009 with an average of 105 meals per day.

7. PERSONAL COUNSELING
The Guatemalan-Maya Center has provided weekly assistance for families at El Sol. A case manager visits El Sol, Jupiter’s Neighborhood Resource Center, twice per week and helps families in need of services such as Medicaid, Florida Kid Care, WIC, Immunizations, Family Planning and the administration of Ages and Stages Questionnaires to help identify children with developmental concerns. This quarter, the case manager attended 160 cases. Sister Marta Tobón, a Guadalupan sister from St. Peter's Catholic Church assists many El Sol workers with her guidance. She often gives family and personal counseling in the center. Most cases are individuals seeking assistance with rent; need for furniture; personal, family or medical problems. She often refers people to different organizations and partners depending on their needs. This quarter Sister Marta took a total of 27 cases. Throughout 2010, Sister Marta and the Guatemalan-Maya Center took a total of 669 cases, compared to total of 197 cases in 2009 and 306 cases in 2008. A monthly breakdown for each year is as follows:

8. SUNSHINE ARTWORKS Sunshine Artworks has consignment agreements with seven painters, three jewelry makers, one ceramics and one belt maker. Sunshine Artworks hosted art classes provided by the Lighthouse Center for the Arts. In 2010 artists were able to sell items at St. Peter’s Church gift shop and at the Lighthouse Center for Arts gift store. Sunshine Artworks also sells note cards with images from painter Pedro Chavajay and Jose Antonio Chavajay. The artists were invited to participate in the Hispanic Heritage Month Art Exhibit at Boynton Beach Library and Florida Atlantic University. Each artist was able to display several paintings. This year they hosted the 3rd Annual Artfest on November 7th from 12PM – 4PM. Approximately 200 community members attended. Sunshine Artworks changed it structure at the end of 2010, and will now function as a volunteer club.

9. VOLUNTEERS AND INTERNS
The total number of volunteer hours in 2010 was 8,711 valuled at $365,238.72. Many of those hours are accounted for in the different programs described in this report. The rest of the hours are contributed by volunteers that provide administrative and technical support; help register new workers; welcome employers; assist with special events and committees; write grants and develop strategies, and much more. These are volunteer hours we categorize as “Other.” The total number of volunteer hours contributed for Other operations (and that are not otherwise mentioned in this report) were: 5,983 hours.

El Sol has hosted five interns from Florida Atlantic University. Their tasks include teaching English as a Second Language, assisting with El Sol’s marketing and outreach initiatives, event planning, grant writing, donor management and miscellaneous clerical work. Together, the four interns have contributed a total of 223 hours this quarter.
