November 2014

The lighting industry is changing. Super-efficient LEDs, which were once seen as a specialist item, are now taking the market by storm –

with their cost- and energy-saving benefits fuelling widespread cross-sector demand.

Alongside this, evolving technology – in particular, the rise of 24/7 e-commerce and the rapid development of handheld smartphones and tablets – is revolutionising the way tradespeople do business. Gone are the days when electricians, contractors and specifiers were restricted to placing orders within office hours, either over the phone or in person. The shift to online is transforming the relationship between retailers and tradespeople, and reinventing

the market for the long-term.LED Hut Trade is at the forefront of

these changes, bringing together the latest in lighting technology with unbeatable customer service to provide the ultimate online LED lighting resource for the trade. By offering a vast product range – as well as expert advice, speedy delivery, transparent, competitive pricing and a wealth of peer reviews – we’re here to help make tradespeople’s jobs as easy as possible in the digital age. That’s what this supplement is all about: sharing our knowledge and expertise on all things LED, so Electrical Times readers can make the most of the opportunities this growing market brings. We hope you enjoy it!

Atmosphere, ambiance and mood are the aspects most in demand for lighting. The technological advances in the development of LEDs have

been fast and furious, with manufacturers competing to design suitable fittings for every application in the workplace and the home. It’s safe to say that LEDs offer greater levels of energy efficiency and performance.

Businesses are adopting LED technology and embracing retro-fitting projects. While homeowners are warming to LED’s benefits – so long as the price is right.

LEDs have a bright future as the industry continues to evolve with improvements in chip and driver technology, and the components engineered to deliver light drive

down pricing.Even more, when integrated into a smart

building lighting, the automation and controls of an LED system amplify energy savings potential by optimising lighting in response to daylight and occupancy.

In this still-maturing technology segment, companies are looking at how do you pull together options, simplify the process, and make LEDs easily consumable for businesses that weren’t going to upgrade.

Electrical Times has worked with LED Hut to answer these questions and illustrate, with examples across this supplement, why this technology will dominate projects and refurbishments for the next 12 months and beyond.

On the judging panel

With energy costs steadily climbing and commercial organisations under mounting governmental pressure to cut emissions, it’s no surprise that non-domestic orders made up 96% of the LED market in 2013.1 Commercial end-users

are constantly looking for reliable, cost-effective and long-term efficiency measures without compromising on performance – and lighting is a key area that cannot be overlooked. As LED manufacturers continue to invest heavily in R&D to rise to the challenge, one product in particular has emerged as a clear front runner – namely LED panels.

The future of non-domestic lightingLED panel lighting has proven to be revolutionary for commercial applications, incorporating the latest generation of LED technology with conventional fittings. Not only do today’s models deliver when it comes to efficiency – cutting energy usage by up to 45% compared to traditional fluorescent lighting – but the range of sizes and fitting options available means they are as suitable for retrofit projects as they are for new build.2

LED panels provide a like-for-like alternative to fluorescent tube and tray lighting, offering superior efficiency and unrivalled light quality – as well as a longer lifespan and virtually no maintenance costs. With market developments continuing to bring up-front costs and payback periods down, LED panels have become an increasingly attractive option for offices, retail units, schools and hospitals alike, and the opportunity for contractors working with the technology is now huge.

The technologyLED panel lights use integrated SMD (surface-mounted diode) technology to produce powerful, high-quality light with a low electricity consumption. For example, in LED Hut’s own market-leading LUMiLife range, each panel incorporates 192 San’Am SMDs. The panels are side-lit and have a wide-reaching 120° beam, making them a modern, high-performance

The introduction of panel lighting is one of the most significant LED developments of recent years in terms of cutting costs and emissions for non-domestic buildings. With popularity continuing to in-crease, Dan Coleman, product manager at LED Hut, explains the technology behind LED panels and why they present a growing opportunity for contractors

alternative to some competitor models on the market (which use older, rear-lit technology).

PerformanceUtilising SMD technology rather than fluorescence or filaments, LED panels boast superior efficiency and light quality compared to their more traditional counterparts, and this is the most significant factor driving uptake in the non-domestic sector. For example, even though it has a power consumption of just 40W, a standout feature of LED Hut’s most popular panel, the 595x595mm model (designed as a direct replacement for a standard 600x600mm fluorescent trough) is its impressive brightness – offering a high lumen output with a comparatively low wattage.

To illustrate this, a typical 600x600mm trough incorporating four standard 2ft fluorescent tubes has a combined wattage of 72W, with a lighting output of approximately 2,800 lumens. Replacing this with a LUMiLife panel will not only reduce the total power consumption for the fitting to just 40W, but can also increase the lumen output to 3,800. As a result, energy usage per trough is cut by 45%, and light quality is significantly improved.

LifespanAn important feature of LED panels in general is their marked resilience and long lifespan. LUMiLife panels offer consistently bright light for around 50,000 hours of use – and last up to three times longer than fluorescent alternatives. Because they are so hardwearing, they virtually eliminate the need for costly maintenance, typically staying replacement-free for more than 13 years.3

Return on investmentIt’s a common misconception that LED technology is so advanced that it’s prohibitively expensive. In fact, prices across the market have generally followed a downward trend in recent years, making LEDs more accessible than ever for both new-build and retrofit applications.

At LED Hut, we manage product development, manufacturing and sale of the entire LUMiLife range. As a result, we are able to offer the best deal for contractors – with our panel lights retailing at around 45-60% less than competitor products – all whilst ensuring the highest possible quality standards across the whole portfolio.

Lower up-front costs also mean a quicker return on investment. For example, calculations for a small (210-pupil) community primary school show that simply swapping existing T5 and T8 fluorescent lighting for retrofit LED alternatives could cut overall electricity usage by more than 43%, with payback in just two years.4 What’s more, thanks to their long life and unrivalled energy performance, the panels will also continue to deliver ongoing cost and power savings for many years to come.

Choosing the right optionAs well as its best-selling 595x595mm panel, LED Hut also offers LUMiLife LED panels in a range of other sizes: 300x1200mm (40W); 300x300mm (20W); 300x600mm (20W) – meaning contractors can pick and choose according to the sizing requirements of individual projects. The full portfolio is available in two colour outputs: 4,500 kelvins and 6,000 kelvins. There are also dimmable and non-dimmable options – both of which come with a fully compatible driver (SELV or TRIAC) as standard.

With a lightweight aluminium frame that has a thickness of just 9mm, LUMiLife LED panels offer a slim-line, lighter option for contractors looking for total ease of transport and installation. Finished in clean white with a TMA front, the products are aesthetically unobtrusive and blend seamlessly into their surroundings.

There is also a range of ancillary panel accessories available that allow for even greater installation and design flexibility – including a framed mounted solution, a pre-wired hanging kit, DALI drivers and a UK-manufactured emergency power pack.

InstallationLUMiLife LED panels are designed for suspended ceiling use, as a direct replacement for existing fluorescent troughs – but they are also suitable for surface mounting or hanging from conventional ceilings. Each model comes with all the components needed for straightforward drop-ceiling installation, and also has rear-mounted screw brackets if opting for surface mounting onto ceilings or walls.

All of this makes for a seamless fitting process – with no need for specialist tools, external product training or any extra installation time. In fact, when it comes to LUMiLife panels, it really is just a case of easy fitting, unbeatable performance and ongoing savings.

Q&A 07

1. What is the average ROI when working with LEDs?Thanks to their unrivalled efficiency, LEDs offer far quicker payback periods than other low-energy lighting solutions (e.g. CFLs). However, the actual return on investment will of course vary according to different applications.

Whilst LEDs have traditionally had a reputation for being more expensive, in recent years costs across the market have come down significantly (particularly as LEDs become more of a commodity). What’s more, because of their lengthy lifespan, they will continue to deliver ongoing savings long after they have paid for themselves.

At LED Hut, we are committed to ensuring our market-leading LUMiLife range remains as competitively priced as possible without compromising on product quality. We’re confident that our high-performance range and tiered pricing structure means that contractors benefit from speedy payback and long-term results across the board.

2. With so many new LED manufacturers popping up, how can I guarantee quality (and a happy customer)? This is a great question – and one that comes up time and time again, especially as most LEDs look very similar on the outside. Quality is a key focus for us at LED Hut, and we always advise contractors to follow these golden rules when purchasing:

Ask for proof of certification: This confirms that the manufacturer has met the correct electrical certification requirements – this is most likely to take the form of an EC Declaration of Conformity.

Other customers are the best source of impartial, honest and useful feedback. Everyone on the LED Hut team takes customer feedback very seriously, and we pride ourselves on our (more than 22,000) positive reviews.

All quality LED products should be protected by a solid warranty – we offer an extended five years on the full LUMiLife portfolio (on completion of a warranty form).

It’s your retailer’s job to provide trusted support and expertise, so you can make the most of the choice of LED solutions on offer and tailor your order to the exact requirements of individual projects. Make use of the LED Hut Trade sales team – they’re here to help!

3. Will LEDs work with a leading edge dimmer?Dimming is an issue that faces a lot of contractors working with LEDs – as they often require a special, trailing edge dimmer – and it’s something we have worked hard to address during product development. As a result, we have recently launched a 4.5W GU10 LED lamp (designed as a direct replacement for a 50W halogen spot). This incorporates brand new technology that allows for effective dimming, even with a standard leading edge dimmer. We’re now planning to roll this technology out across the rest of our range, and broaden the scope of applications that can make use of long-lasting, highly efficient and dimmable LED lamps.

4. How do I choose the right LEDs to replace existing lighting (in terms of power consumption and output)?Since the introduction of DIM (Domestic Implementation Measure) 2 under the updated Energy related Product (ErP) legislation, the lighting market guidelines for buying replacement LED lamps use wattage / lumen equivalents. For

example, to meet the criteria for replacing a 50W halogen spotlight, an LED lamp must have a minimum output of 350 lumens.

Very simply, yes – it instantly improves lighting efficiency and it’s not as difficult as you’d expect. Halogen MR16s are powered by a transformer that is easily removed from the circuit. At the same time as doing this, you can replace the MR16 lamp holder and wire in a GU10 fly-lead in its place.

6. What is the maximum run length for LED strip lighting – and where does everything go?Without an amplifier, 12V LED strip lighting has a maximum run length of 10m. If used in conjunction with an amplifier, the maximum run length is infinite – as long as you follow this sequence:

Mains > LED driver > 10m strip > amplifier (with driver) > 10m strip > amplifier (with driver) > 10m strip (etc.).

7. Why are LED panel lights sized slightly differently to fluorescent trays? As fluorescent trays are recessed into the ceiling panel, they are sized slightly larger to accommodate all the elements needed for optimum light output (e.g. diffusers). High-performance LED panels are 5mm smaller in height and width, as all features are in-built and there is no need to allow extra space for external components.

Yes – for example, we have recently launched a new LUMiLife high bay range, providing the ideal replacement for HID, halogen or fluorescent industrial lighting. Using the most cutting-edge LED technology, these high bays are lightweight and highly durable – unlike heavy and bulky traditional high bays, which are notoriously difficult to install. They are available in 100W (to replace 250W) and 150W (to replace 400W) models, and are designed for use in warehouses, airports, shopping centres, cold storage, manufacturing plants and fulfilment operations.

Hintlesham Hall Hotel, a 16th century manor house set in 175 acres of Ipswich countryside, fitted more than 600 LUMiLife LED lamps between August 2013 and April 2014 in a bid to significantly cut

costs and consumption. With the entire hotel in line for a lighting update – including 32 guest rooms, communal areas, corridors, conference facilities and dining rooms – sourcing high-performance, cost-saving lamps without compromising on light quality or aesthetics was a top priority. The extensive LUMiLife range ticked all the boxes: providing a modern, energy-efficient lighting solution for Hintlesham Hall while still maintaining the desired look and feel throughout.

Ray Payne, director at Hintlesham Hall Hotel, explains, “When it came to updating the lighting at Hintlesham Hall, we knew we wanted to move over

to cost- and energy-saving LEDs – but our main challenge was finding a supplier that could provide all the different types of lamps we needed. We opted for LUMiLife because of its vast product range – from dimmable spotlights for the bedrooms to candle-shaped lamps for the chandeliers in the dining rooms.

Significant savings“Replacing every lamp in the building was a smart, long-term investment, which more than justified the initial outlay. We completed the project in

April after choosing to spread the cost over several months – starting with the public areas, which have the highest lighting demands, and finishing with the bedrooms. Calculations show that our investment will pay for itself in just one year, with continued savings for many more to come.”

The project saw Hintlesham Hall install a mixture of GU10, B22, E27, E14, and G9 LEDs to replace its existing halogen and incandescent bulbs. As a result, the hotel has already reduced its overall electricity use by 40,722W compared to the same time last year – a significant 32% saving.

Laura Dugdale, LED Hut Trade marketing manager, continues, “As lighting experts and trade specialists, offering bespoke customer service is very important to us, and we are always happy to advise on the best products to meet customers’ needs. Hintlesham Hall, with its varied lighting requirements, was no exception. As well as helping choose between warm white and cool white light (depending on the desired ambience in each space), we also provided several sample lamps for trial – making the whole selection process as straightforward and hassle-free as possible.

“The Hintlesham Hall retrofit is a prime example of how easy it is, even for a period property, to reap the money- and energy-saving benefits of 21st century lighting and still protect its traditional aesthetic. Thanks to the breadth of fittings, shapes and colours the LUMiLife range offers, Hintlesham Hall now has a modern and stylish LED lighting scheme that blends seamlessly with the building’s historical roots.

“Not only are LEDs a high-performance, super-efficient and economical lighting choice, but they are also far more durable than other lamp types – virtually eliminating the cost and labour associated with regular lamp-changing and replacement. This means they make real financial and logistical sense for hotels like Hintlesham Hall, as well as other commercial buildings with significant lighting needs. At LED Hut Trade, we pride ourselves on the breadth and quality of our LUMiLife range – so we’re delighted that we were able to rise to the challenge and meet the hotel’s varied lighting requirements.”
