Heavenly Father, you entrusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, an earthly father. Bless all fathers as they care for their families. Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience; support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them, as we look to You for love and salvation, through Jesus Christ our rock and defender, in union with the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.

MINISTRY MINUTES

Patience Is the Most Perfect Form of Charity

The Very Reverend David T. Fitzgerald sP is the Servant General of the Servants of the Paraclete. His order serves fellow priests and religious by offering many programs for vocational renewal. They seek to bring the healing presence of Jesus to those they serve. He has been writing about the Fruits of the Holy Spirit in his order’s Monthly Newsletter. In the June Newsletter he wrote about the Holy Spirit’s fruit of Patience. He has graciously granted me permission to excerpt from and share what he wrote. He writes –

As a fruit of the Holy Spirit, patience is the most perfect form of charity; it is the perpetual radiance of a loving heart which beholds with joy objects calculated to produce sadness. It is the love that suffers, it is a spirit of quiet acceptance, it is serenity in pain, joy in delay. Patience is the heart of a soul beating in rhythm with the ballad of God’s holy will….

Father David writes that constantly turning to God in prayer is necessary for us to be able to bear our labors, our sufferings and our afflictions serenely and even accept them as being desired for the love of God. Father David goes on to speak of Divine Patience and he writes –

God spoke to St. Catherine of Siena and told her that: “Patience crowns all other virtues and fruits of the Holy Spirit.” A moment’s reflection will show us how this is true. For example, charity – unless charity is crowned with patience it does not endure. Patience is, therefore, like a beautiful finish put on precious woods. We have seen old mahogany tables that careful polishing through the years have given a beautiful finish. Patience is like that. It puts a beautiful finish on all other virtues and fruits…O Holy Spirit, teach us to be patient, fully knowing that every trial offered for our acceptance is but your loving invitation for us to draw by patience deeper into the recesses of Christ’s sacred and all loving Heart.

This week let us pray for the Holy Spirit to show us opportunities to practice the Fruit of Patience by NOT practicing acts of impatience or uncharity toward those whom our lives touch every day. It takes only a moment of impatience to wipe out a whole day of kind acts.

~ Deacon Dan

Reflection ~ Robin Black-Rubenstein

Intentional Discipleship - Last week I wrote about the five thresholds of conversion and focused on the first one that is trust; trust that the faith and the people who live out this faith are authentic, not self-righteously pious, and seeking to help without judgement. This week the focus will be on the second and third thresholds. The second threshold of conversion is Spiritual Curiosity and the third is Spiritual Openness. Like with stages of grief there is no straight path through the thresholds. We often begin again or slow down, or maybe take a few steps back then move on. All of our souls are unique, we can have the same experience as someone else, but how we internalize and live out that experience is unique to us. Even if it seems that people are reacting and experiencing a moment the same way there are nuances that happen that are unique to our soul and therefore our relationship with the divine and those around us.

Spiritual Curiosity- A person finds themselves intrigued by or desiring to know more about Jesus, his life, and his teachings. This curiosity can range from mere awareness of new possibilities to something quite intense (Weddell). In the Gospel reading this Sunday from Mark 4:26-34, Jesus told the crowds of the man who scattered seed but didn’t know how the seed then yielded fruit. This stage is passive like our farmer in the parable. Curiosity involves trust but does not imply that there is an openness to change, yet. To foster spiritual curiosity, it is important to have a place where those who are spiritually curious can easily explore and be with others who are exploring too. Small groups, adult faith-formation, dinners, and talking after Mass are places where seeds can begin to grow. In other words as intentional disciples we should be helping the spiritually curious find the best place to plant and nurture them along the way.

Spiritual Openness- The person acknowledges to herself/himself and to God that he or she is open to the possibility of personal and spiritual change. This is one of the most difficult transitions for a postmodern nonbeliever. Openness is not a commitment to change. They are simply admitting they are open to the possibility of change (Weddell). Here is how we can help foster openness to the Spirit: Talk about your own struggles with and how you have experienced God in your life. Ask questions like, “What do you do when life gets hard?” Then just listen. Reflect back to them where you saw God in their situation (help them connect the dots.) Encourage them to ask God to help them answer their questions. Pray for them. Remember to keep it simple and nondramatic. Be real. This is why small groups are important. That is where relationships are fostered and trust is built that can lead us all to genuine conversation.

Jesus used nature as parable and metaphor. The Catholic tradition holds that grace perfects nature (our nature). Jesus transforms lives. We can make a difference in the world by our loving actions and helping with the harvest.

May the joy and love you give away, return to you this Father’s Day!

Stewardship

“I think that I shall never see…A poem lovely as a tree.” That is the opening stanza of a poem by American poet Alfred Joyce Kilmer. We know Kilmer better as a poet, but in his time, he was also considered to be a great Catholic apologist. He was often compared to his English counterpart G. K. Chesterton. Clearly Kilmer had a great fondness for trees that is Biblically sound.

The last stanza of Kilmer’s famous poem about trees is the most telling. It is, “Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.” Only God can truly make us what we are to be and what we are called to be.

St. Paul had a way with words. He was able to take a very complex concept and summarize it in a few words and phrases. In today’s Second Reading from Second Corinthians, Paul says simply, “…we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5: 7) That statement by Paul has inspired hymns and treatises.

Yet, it is what we are all about as Catholics and Christians. There is no question that it is one of the most difficult notions for us as Catholics and Christians to grasp and accept. The word translated as “walk” can also be translated as “live.” Thus, we could say “We live by faith, and not by sight.”

This was a popular and consistent theme for St. Paul, his point being that we need to build our lives around the eternal prospects, not those of this world. In this society “things” seem so important to us. However, the truth is that they have no eternal significance. That is an ongoing message in the concept of stewardship — basically who we are and how we live is more important than what we own and what we may appear to be. That can be tough for us.

The late Billy Graham, who died earlier this year, was fond of saying, “My home is in Heaven. I am just traveling through this world.” St. Paul would agree with that attitude.
