Brian, Dorothea (Fundraising chair) and I held parent meetings before Christmas. The reason for this was to explain to parents how our group works and the need for help in areas such as fundraising and especially the need for people to work on this committee to help organise and plan our fundraising year. To date I have to say that no one has come forward from the group. If we are to keep a thriving group and raise the money we need to continue for this to happen we must have people taking on these roles. Please think about this and contact one of the committee to find out more.

Derrick and Shirley Smith have stepped down after about 9 years working with the Beaver colony. Derrick was Beaver Leader and Shirley was an Assistant Beaver Leader.  They have been great stalwarts within the colony helping it to develop and grow.

Working with the other leaders and Young leaders they have left it in fantastic shape for our current and future children. We are very fortunate that they will not be leaving the group Derrick is taking on a Quarter Master role and Shirley will be helping out with the fundraising committee.  So thankfully we still be seeing them around the group.Well done to both of you and we wish you all the best in your new roles.

I would like to finish on a really happy note. In recognition of their hard work within the group the following people have been given the following awards:

SERVICE AWARDSSERVICE AWARDS

Amanda White 25yrs service award

John Pickering 5yrs service award

John Wotherspoon 5yrs service award

Karen Pickering 5yrs 5yrs service award

Shirley Smith 5yrs 5yrs service award

Nicholas Scott 5yrs service award

Congratulations to you all on your fantastic support to the group Whatever else you are doing this spring I ask you to get involved with our group, get active

and together we can continue to provide the best scouting for your children.

Happy scouting in 2012! Paul Bullock Group Scout Leader

ELING RECREATION GROUND

Chairman's Corner

Welcome to another exciting year for Eling Sea Scouts. With a building shell ready for internal fit-out, we are pulling together funding, materials etc. to get the new building ready for use. Initially for boating, and then upstairs for general Scouting. The building looks fantastic on the shore of Testwood Lake - we desperately want to get it ready for moving in.

We have a few changes to the admin leadership team, with a new treasurer (Michael Suter) replacing Jack Wotherspoon after 5 years fantastic work - thanks Jack. Lisa Marshall has been working out of the country for the last few minutes so we've

been trying to make do without a secretary, but we're looking forward to seeing Lisa back so we don't have to put up with my poor minute taking any more! Later this year, Eric Hills, our Quartermaster, will be moving North to Derbyshire, so we confirming plans for a team to take on managing our general equipment (we have a few people keen to be involved, just working out how best to arrange it). And we've had some shuffling around of parents' reps as their children move up through the sections. Not all sections confirmed yet, but I'm pleased to welcome back Sarah Abbess, previously a Scout parent rep, and now our first ever Relentless Explorers parents' rep on the Group Executive.

As ever, we are keen to see more help so that we can continue to offer excellent Scouting with excellent support. The fundraising team in particular, covering Donkey Derby as well as many other events and activities, has only 5 members and really need more help. Please let me or Dorothea Kennard know if you can help in any way, even if you can't make it to meetings there are plenty of jobs to be done.

Eling Beavers joined over 3500 Beavers, Parents and Leaders for a day of fun and adventure at Paulton's Park.

From 8am the Colonies started to arrive at the New Forest Adventure Park, creating a colourful show with their bright blue sweats and Group neckers.

A special guest was on hand to greet the youngsters as they arrived; the County's latest recruit, "Big Beaver", who high-fived the excited Colonies.

All day long the youngsters enjoyed the rides, blessed by dry weather. Another special guest, Santa Claus, spoke with each Beaver and gave them a Christmas present.Big Beaver joined them on the rides, screaming as loudly as anyone. Adam, the County Commissioner, was so pleased with Big Beaver, that he presented him with his Wood Beads...

Waingunga Cubs Report January - April 2012

We were busy last term with a variety of badges and challenge award work. After the new year we started our Scientist Badge and learnt about a whole host of stuff from the mad scientist who came along to help us do our experiments! Thank you to Sanja, one of our Explorer Scout leaders for her expertise and for turning up in her white coat – it was great fun.

We have also been working hard at our Fitness Challenge this term as well. We have to try 2 new sports so we invited Lynden Bowen (a Cub Leader at Copythorne) along to teach us some country dancing – it certainly made us puff so it must be good for us! As part of this award we have also looked at what other exercise we do regularly and learnt about eating healthily.

To be continued...

Waingunga Cubs ReportJanuary - April 2012

In early March we ran the annual Parent and Cub camp at Ferny Croft Scout centre and had a splendid weekend trying new activities –with 12 Cubs and 12 parents taking part it was a great weekend. Thank you to everyone who joined in – the best bit has to be the marshmallows on the campfire?

The Founders Day campfire was also well attended and we were pleased to be able to invest Maria (Kaa) one of our Assistant Cub Scout Leaders that night. A special night to make your promise for anyone.

We had to say good bye to Maggie Peall (Rikki) in January as has moved back to Lincolnshire. Maggie had been with us for 10 years after moving down to Southampton in 2002 – we will miss her ‘kneckers’ and woggles. Thank you Maggie for being such an inspiration and joy to work with, there are many Cubs who could not have done their Scouting without your extra help and support.

On the other hand - we have welcomed Robyn Wines (Raksha), a Cub leader from Somerset to the Pack. She has just moved to Totton with her work and has decided to continue her Scouting with Eling Cubs. I hope you enjoy your time with us Robyn.

We have said our goodbyes to a number of Cubs who have all transferred to the Scout

troop – Ruben Kidby, Jarvis Gray, Jevan Hales and Daniel McClaren have now all completed their Silver Chief Scout Award – well done guys a really big achievement. Enjoy your time in the Scout troop.

We have also welcomed 4 beavers from the Colony – James, Justin, Jessica and Liam have all been invested as Cubs and getting stuck into the activities we do. Very exciting to see our young members moving from one section to another.

We are not about to start the summer activities where most of our time we will be out and about. If you miss a meeting then please send me a text to find out where we are the following week. After all we are now sc………………….outs!!!!

Warrior Sea Scouts

The Troop proudly bears the name of HMS Warrior - now preserved in Portsmouth and

featured in many of our header photographs.  Whilst members enjoy the normal Scout

activities there is also a strong emphasis on nautical skills, including swimming, dinghy sailing and kayaking. The troop meets every

Thursday night in Totton at 7.15 pm. Boating activities will normally be at Testwood Lakes.

The Scout Section is for young people, both boys and girls, aged between 10½ and 14 years.  WANT TO JOIN?

Cooking Competition

After some weeks of menu planning , list writing, shopping, and creating time plans, Zach led us boldly into the District cooking competition. We entered two teams this year and started feeling a little worried when we saw the opposition. Most of them looked like they could handle a saucepan or two! We set to work laying the table and handing in our costing and menus to the judges. We made a good start and prepared the desert so that it would set in time. On to the starter and main. The roux sauce went well with no lumps and we all helped prepare the vegetables for the dip and Bolognese sauce. The judges came around and tasted our meal, and then we all tucked in to the dishes we had made. So far so good, all we had to do was to clear away and that’s when it happened! Tom started to flag and became allergic to washing up!

We all tried to speed up but could not go any faster and the final few point went down the drain with the washing up water. After a very brave battle we came away with 2nd place and our other team were 3rd. I am sure that when we are older and wiser next year we will be back.

Intrepid Patrol

Caving Trip

On a warm sunny Sunday in March 5 Scouts , 1 Leader and 1 young leader from Warrior Troop went caving with the Hampshire Scout Caving Club. We went to the popular caving regions in the Mendip Hills. Mendip caves tend to be shorter with Swindon’s Hole being the longest at just under 10km. Mendip caves are generally smaller passages with more crawling and less vertical pitches and although shorter in length the number of caves in a small area is very high which makes it a very popular area for beginners . Caving offers all kinds of adventures and experiences for novices and experts alike and the first steps into the darkness was made a lot easier knowing that the Hampshire Scout instructors had visited the caves many times before. After the initial nerves and concerns about getting lost or stuck I began to enjoy this new experience and would recommend everyone to have a go. It was a great day out.
