We have been nonstop since installation on March 26th .What a wonderful show of support we received that night, thank you to all those who were present. Our Mardi Gras themed combined district Inaugural Ball was a success for the second year in a row. Our first "For Fun Bar Bingo" with our own comedic caller Reyne Rocha ,PER was well attended and raised money for the building fund. Our piggy bank chairman Nancy Gluekert is working hard at selling candy for the purple pig and is doing a fabulous job !! We participated in the ritual contest and our team placed in several categories. Way to go officers! Elks Youth week 5/1-5/7 was celebrated in our lodge: Francisco Cacheo Youth Activites chairman and committee put on a fantastic Sunday Movie Matinee including lunch and Despicable Me 2. We had our open meeting for Youth Night where our Americanism Chairman Ruthy Almaraz and Scholarship Chairman Scott Nakashima presented awards and scholarships . Thanks to the committee members who helped the chairmen with their time and dedication. This evening is one of the proudest moments we as Elks can experi- ence at the lodge. We, collectively are helping create the difference in all of our futures. Our Cinco de Mayo party in the Jolly Corks was so well attended we ran out of food within 45minutes. The Mother's Day program and brunch had a great turn out as well and the kitchen crew did a phenomenal job. Good to see so many new faces show up to help. As I write this, we are heading to the CHEA Convention in Palm Springs with over twen- ty attending from Gardena. We have so many activities happening in the coming months. Many of the offic- ers are preparing to attend National Convention in New Orleans mid-July. Big Big thanks to them for their dedi- cation of time and volunteer service to this lodge. We're halfway through the year and I'm still excited about being elected. It's been great to see the turnout at the Sunday breakfasts it was fun to see all the moms at the Mother's day brunch. I want to keep encouraging you to attend Sunday break-fasts and Tuesdays hamburg-er nights, all of your support is appreciated! Thanks to all the Chairman for Tuesday hamburger nights and Sun-day breakfasts it wouldn't be possible without them and the volunteers. Father's Day is right around the corner and summer is quickly ap-proaching I can't wait for an exciting fun second half of the year!

I can't believe we

have two months

behind us already. Time flies when

you are having fun!

There is so much going on and so

much to do. I would love to see all

of our members participating and

volunteering to make these events

enjoyable and memorable.

We had a great turn out for our

Mother's Day Brunch. The service

was wonderful and the food was

delicious. Thank you to all of our

officers and the volunteers who

helped in the kitchen. I truly hope

you and your families enjoyed it. If

you couldn't make that one our Fa-

ther's Day Brunch will be June 15th,

so mark your calendar.

Don't forget we have a few Fez par-

ties this year and having a Fez hat

would make your outfit complete.

Please see me after the meetings if

you are interested in getting one.

Limited sizes are available in the

first order.

I'm looking forward to all the fun

events ahead. Hope to see you

there.

Sincerely, Marcya Holguin Esteemed Loyal Knight

Dear Fellow Elks,

I'm always amazed on how fast time flies by. The house committee, trus-tees, front office and co-members, have been working hard to keep our lodge strong. We have had so much fun in the Jolly Corks with Comedy Bar Bingo, Cinco de Mayo celebra-tion, and just hanging out after a long day. We had an awesome Mother's Day breakfast and it was one that I won't forget. As one of your officers, we've been pretty busy the last couple of months. We’ve been studying for the annual ritual contest, and have just come back from attending the California/Hawaii Elk convention, in a hot week, in Palm Springs. It's always fun to learn more each day about the Elks and what we represent. I love coming back to you and this lodge, to talk about all the great people and the great things we do in our community, and the new things I learn about, during these Elk conventions. I hope to see you at the lodge for a meeting, or for an event, or even for a visit in the Jolly Corks. Happy Sum-mer!

Sincerely,

Your Leading Knight

Matthew Almaraz

Tish McCauley

ENF Chairman

Take a look at your membership card and see if you have an ENF heart sticker on it. If you do, give

yourself a pat on the back! That sticker indicates you are a supporter of the Elks National Founda-

tion 501 © (3)! If you don’t, keep reading. I bet you’ll want to be a part of this amazing foundation

by the last paragraph.

The mission of the ENF is to help Elks build stronger communities. Since inception, the ENF has

contributed more than $384.1 million toward Elks' charitable projects nationwide. These funds ena-

ble programs that support youth, honor veterans, and meet needs in areas where Elks live and

work. Our programs continue to grow each year, allowing Elks to do even more to build stronger

communities.

Youth Night is my favorite night every year. Meeting the exceptional kids from our community re-

minds me that I play a small role in helping develop their future. I find myself wondering what they

might otherwise do if the Elks weren’t able to provide educational opportunities to these kids.

I am always proud to tell everyone I meet that Elks sponsor an annual Americanism Essay Contest

for 5th-8th graders, and provided more than $4 Million in scholarships this year! There are several

different scholarships available, including a new one for medical school students. If you haven’t

looked at Elks.org lately, log in and check it out!

There are several community building grants available each Elk year. Each grant has specific quali-

fication criteria, and common among them is Elk leadership for meeting local needs or providing

activities for the youth in our community. Francisco Cacheo, our Youth Chairman, has some great

ideas, (if you missed Movie Day, you missed out!), to use grants to develop new youth programs.

Volunteers are always needed, so please see me if this sounds interesting to you.

Each year, the Grand Exalted Ruler sets a per capita goal for lodges to reach. This year, it is $4.60

per member. Once that goal is met, the lodge can apply for the Gratitude Grant. We met the goal last

year, and our lodge put the 2013-2014 Gratitude Grant to good use, partnering with our neighbor,

Denker Ave. Elementary School. Gardena Elks #1919 purchased and donated new rugs for 2 kin-

dergarten classrooms, and a new computer for challenged students who learn best via visual

presentations. None of the items we donated were in the school’s budget. Denker Ave School is

very happy to partner with the Elks, and we hope to meet the GER per capita and watch this part-

nership grow during this Elk year.

There are many ways to donate. If you don’t have that “Heart on your card”, it isn’t too late to get

one. You can stop by the office, or see me on meeting night, and get that heart sticker. If you aren’t

in the area, there are several other ways to donate listed at Elks.org --> ENF and “Ways to Give”. Be

sure to Search Employers to see if your workplace matches donations and double your impact!

Dan Baccelliere

Vice President, South Central Coast District

California Hawaii Elks Association

n September 13, 1964, Dan was born, the eldest of four, in a small town called

Brooklyn. Raised in Farmingdale NY, he competed in several sports, captained the

gymnastics team, was a member of the Varsity Leaders Club and graduated Farm-

ingdale High School in 1982. In 1983, he enlisted in the United States Navy and

served aboard the USS Enterprise CVN65 in Alameda Ca. While aboard he complet-

ed two West-Pac Cruises (84 & 86) and a trip through the Suez Canal, into the

Mediterranean. He was later assigned to Long Beach Naval Station (87-88). While

stationed at Long Beach, he attended Cal State University Long Beach, where he

studied Theatre.

Venturing out into the professional world, he somehow ended up in “The Valley” andeventually earned his

SAG card, for an episode of Unsolved Mysteries, in 1989. Living the “Actor’s” life, he held many different jobs

over the years, ranging from deck hand on Catalina Express, to Data Analyst at JPL, Teledyne and Data Prod-

ucts, Construction worker, Board of Directors at Granada Hills Community Hospital, (brought in to assist with

FEMA claims following the Northridge Earthquake), Lead Tech/Installer for a home theatre company etc, etc.

Combining all of his acquired skills and always up for a new challenge, he has worked for himself, since 2001,

doing pretty much “Whatever”. He occasionally steps back into the limelight and one of these days, he might

actually return to acting. Ironically, the one trade, into which he never endeavored, was being a waiter. The

only dishes he ever dealt with were satellites, until he joined the Elks, that is.

In 1995 he was called back to the sea, when he was introduced to Playa Del Rey. In 1997, he became co-host

of a local “Scaryoke” night, where he met many of his present day friends. A select few were members of

2050 and as the years passed, afew more joined and a few more after that, until Dan was the only one not a

member. In July 2005, Dan finally became a proud member, of Westchester Lodge. In 2006 he was elected to

the position of the Esteemed Lecturing/Dishwashing Knight. He was awarded the Officer of the Year for

2006/7. Due to an unexpected vacancy in the Officer Corps, he was asked to serve as Exalted Ruler/

Dishwasher for2007/8 and then returned to fill in his original slot and served again in 2009/10. He continues

to chair and serve on several committees within the Lodge including Fraternal, Maintenance, Ritual, Govern-

ment Relations, BLT, Dictionary, Elks Memorial etc. In 2011, he was presented with the Elk of the Year Award

for 2010/11. He has also served as the President of the PER Association since 2010.

On a District level, Dan was appointed to the Chairman of the now defunct Elks Training, for 3 years. (Wasn’t

his fault it disappeared, SCCD had perfect participation). Then he was appointed to the Chairman of the BLT

Committee for another 3 years. In 2012/13, he had the privilege of serving as the Esquire to the District Depu-

ty Grand Exalted Ruler. In May 2014, at the CHEA State Convention in Palm Springs Ca, Dan has the Honor of

becoming the Vice President for the South Central Coast District of the California Hawaii Elks Association.
