steLLar seCOnd periOdElmira’s defense limited Utica to just three shots on goal in the second period of Friday’s game. Utica’s three shots are the fewest allowed by El-mira since the 2012-13 season when EC held Manhattanville College to three shots in the first period on November 30, 2012. Prior to the Man-hattanville game, Elmira limited Neumann University to two shots in the second period on November 3, 2012.

anOtHer game WinnerCarter Shinkaruk ’16 scored the game-winning goal in Elmira’s 4-3 win over Utica College. Shinkaruk’s game-winner is his first of the season and his first since scoring the game-winner against Utica in last year’s ECAC West Tournament Championship game.

10 WitH pOintsIn Elmira’s 4-3 win over Utica, the Soaring Eagles had 10 different players record points. It is the first time this season Elmira has had 10 or more players record a point in a single-game and the first time since last year’s ECAC West Tournament Championship game against Utica.

a first fOr eCElmira’s two goals in the first period and two goals in the second mark the first time this season the Soaring Eagles have scored a goal in a period other than the third. It is also the first time this year Elmira has not scored a goal in the third period.

OutsHOt But nOt OutsCOredUtica outshot Elmira 31-to-27 last Friday but the Soaring Eagles still skat-ed away with a win. Last season, Elmira went 8-7-1 against teams when being outshot. Looking ahead to EC’s matchup with Hobart, the States-men outshot Elmira in all four meetings but the Purple and Gold still managed to claim two victories, one of which came on Hobart’s home ice.

On tHe rigHt traCkAlthough a 1-1-1 start to the season is nothing to write home about, the Soaring Eagles can take solice knowing that they are off to their best start since the 2008-09 season. In each of the previous five seasons, Elmira has gone 1-2-0 in their first three games.

marginsky’s firstWith 1:12 remaining in the first period against Utica, Jeremy Marginsky ’18 scored his first collegiate goal as a Soaring Eagle. Marginsky is the first freshman to score this season and became the fastest rookie to score a goal since the 2012-13 season when Liam Burtt ’16 netted his career first on November 2, 2012 against Neumann University.

tenner’s pOint streakJarryd ten Vaanholt ’16 has four points this season on two goals and two assists. He has successfully registered a point in Elmira’s last five games, dating back to last season.

sumi’s streaking tOOTommy Sumi ’16 has also produced a point in each of Elmira’s first three games. He is riding a four-game point streak, which also dates back to last season.

aLL-time vs. HOBartThe Soaring Eagles have faced the Statesmen of Hobart College 77 times. Elmira owns a decisive edge in the all-time series at 56-19-2. Elmira went 2-2 against the Statesmen last year, picking up a road win and a victory on home ice during the ECAC West Conference Tournament Semifinals.

sCOuting HOBartThe Statesmen of Hobart enter this weekend with a 4-2-0 overall record and a 3-1-0 mark in ECAC West play. Bo Webster leads the Statesmen with nine points on a team-leading four goals and five assists. Defensively, Hobart has split time in net between Frank Oplinger and Lino Chimien-ti who have each started in three games apiece. However, Oplinger has started in Hobart’s last three games, making 97 saves en route to a perfect 3-0-0 record.

nOt sinCe 2008-09As a team, Elmira scored 109 goals last season, the most by any EC team coached by Aaron Saul ’98. The last Elmira team to score more goals dates back to the 2008-09 season when the Soaring Eagles recorded 112. However, in five years at the helm of the EC men’s ice hockey program, Saul boasts three 100-goal seasons.

eCaC West supremaCyThe Soaring Eagles were voted to finish first in the ECAC West Confer-ence according to the preseason coaches poll. Elmira received five first-place votes and a total of 35 points as they were picked to be the team to beat in 2014-15.

fOLLOWing tHe COnferenCe titLeThe Purple and Gold have had a fair amount of success in years fol-lowing an ECAC West Tournament title. In nine seasons following a conference crown, Elmira has had eight winning seasons, four of which were 20-plus win seasons. Elmira also qualified for four NCAA Tourna-ments, making three NCAA Quarterfinal appearances, and earned one NCAA Third Place finish.
