DIGITAL NATIVES

Students growing up these days, who might be called digital natives have been surrounded by and immersed in digital media all the time.

As they have been used to playing Play Station and learning what they want to know by using digital tools from their early ages, today’s students require teachers who have the knowledge and skills to facilitate their participation in a collaborative and digital learning environment.

NEW ROLE OF THE TEACHER IN THE DIGITAL AGE

TEACHER AS ‘CO-LEARNER’

Now and in the future, effective teachers of digital-age learners will be challenged to move away from models of teaching and learning as isolated endeavors. As they model work and learning that reflects inventive thinking, teachers must become comfortable as co-learners with their students and with colleagues around the world.

TEACHER AS ‘CONTENT-CURATOR’

As students can reach abundant free educational content, anywhere and at any time, teachers of today are challenged to put aside the role of subject matter expert and adopt new role of content curator. This shifting role of teachers implies spending less time giving a lecture to the students and more time supporting students to successfully access and develop their critical thinking about contents.

TEACHER AS ‘FACILITATOR’ OF LEARNING

The classroom is no longer valid place where teachers deliver their knowledge regarding subject matter into passive and submissive students. The teacher plays a role more as a facilitator who can coach, enhance, mediate, and help students develop their learning. As an excellent teacher as facilitator, one of the biggest role is asking good questions.

So, teachers need to apply different motivational skills to make students learning more effective.
