    SECTION 1

    SCHOOL INFORMATION

  • St. Dominics International School, Portugal Page 4 of 35

St Dominics International School, Portugal (SDIS) is a private, co-educational day

school providing international education of the highest calibre through the three IBO

programmes for students aged 3-19. SDIS is the only school in Portugal authorised to

deliver all three programmes of the International Baccalaureate Organisation: the Primary

Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Diploma Programme (DP).

The Schools strong commitment to IBO educational philosophy sits comfortably with the

Dominican commitment to education and the search for truth reflected in the motto Veritas.

The rich history of the Irish Dominican Sisters in Portugal dates back to 1639. Unable to

form a convent in their homeland due to the persecution of Catholics, the Sisters travelled

to other countries. The convent of Bom Sucesso in Belm is unique as the only religious

community of nuns that has survived from that time and having had a continual presence in

Portugal. In 1829, the Sisters accepted their first boarder student and established the Bom

Sucesso Girls Day School in 1954. Transition to a co-educational school began in 1963.

In 1964, during the building of the first bridge over the Rio Tejo, the expanding English

speaking expatriate community asked the sisters to establish a new English language

school. St Dominics College started with fewer than 20 students but quickly outgrew its

space. The sisters purchased land and the new school opened in 1975; it was re-named St

Dominics International School in 1988. The School was one centre of the Fundao Obra

Social das Religiosas Dominicanas Irlandesas, a charitable foundation under which the

school operated as a not-for-profit organisation.

In 2007, the Foundation signed an Assignment of Operation contract with VERITAS

Educatio. S.A. This entity assumed the management of the school from the 1st of January

2008, releasing the Sisters resident in Portugal from day-to-day management activities,

while ensuring the continuation of the values, principles, guidelines and social and

educational strategy that have always constituted the practice of the Fundao Obra Social

das Religiosas Dominicanas Irlandesas. As at 15 January 2010, St Dominics International

School was officially owned and managed by Veritas Educatio, SA, which established a

Board of Governors in line with best practice in international schools.

The Junior School offers English, Portuguese, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts,

Personal, Social and Physical Education under the umbrella of the International

Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) in Nursery, Kindergarten, Reception and

Grades 1 to 5. There is a maximum of 20 students in each Junior School class.

In the Senior School the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), with

full Certification, is offered in Grades 6 to 10 in classes of a maximum of 20 pupils. In

Grades 11 and 12 students prepare for the International Baccalaureate Diploma

examinations leading to a full IB Diploma or, in some cases, to individual IB Courses.

Maximum class size is 16. English as a Second Language (ESL) and support for students

with Special Needs (SEN) are part of our educational services. A wide range of co-curricular

activities is offered throughout the school.

Fully qualified teachers are employed both locally and internationally. Currently, there

are 11 nationalities in the teaching staff of whom 46 are women and 15 are men. Several

members of staff serve as examiners, moderators, teachers workshop leaders and

programme committee members for the IBO and ECIS. Others are CIS Visiting Team

    Members.

Classes begin in early September and continue through until the end of June with breaks for

Christmas and Easter and shorter mid-term breaks. Classes run from 08h30 -15h30, for 180

days. Teachers are contracted for 190 days to allow for staff training and other activities.

The school is housed in two one-storey buildings and provides a self-contained Nursery/

Kindergarten, 40 classrooms, 2 Gym Halls, 3 Art Rooms, 2 Libraries, 4 Science and

Technology Laboratories, Music and Computer Rooms, and a Multi-faith meditation room.

There are facilities for Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Tennis, Badminton and

    Athletics.

Learning at St. Dominics International School

The educational programme and learning at SDIS is inspired by, and constructed from, the

twin influences of the International Baccalaureate Organisation and its IB Learner Profile,

and the Dominican motto of Veritas held by the founders of the school which value the

commitment to learning through inquiry and an on-going search for truth.

As educators, the search for truth shapes and informs our beliefs that each

diverse cultures, nationalities and religious convictions and the responsibility to play

an active and positive role in creating a just society

  • Employees & Teachers Booklet 2014-2015 Page 7 of 35

The acquisition of the skills of cooperative learning and open, honest communication

by all members of the school community

The exercise of thinking and reasoning powers of all learners enabling them to make

    positive and wise decisions

TO BE AN EMPLOYEE AT ST DOMINICS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL MEANS TO:

    LOCATION OF THE SCHOOL

The School is situated some 15km to the west of Lisbon, and very close to the motorway

that runs between Lisbon and Cascais. What was a rural area has developed into a

predominantly residential neighborhood with the usually related facilities.

The great majority of the school population lives between the area where the school is

located and Cascais (which is 25km west of Lisbon). All this area is known as 'Costa do

Estoril' (Estoril Coast - Estoril used to be the main attraction along this coast but Cascais

has recently taken over). The Costa do Estoril is located on the north riverbank of the river

Tagus and continues to the Atlantic coast. It is formed by what used to be various

segregated little villages and is now one mass of villages directly connected with each other,

but each one still maintaining its original name. Costa do Estoril is considered one of the

most up-market areas of the Greater Lisbon surroundings.

    TRAVELLING TO SCHOOL

Staff members are entitled to travel on school buses, on routes available and space

permitting, free of charge. This is not always a convenient option when considering timing

and professional responsibilities. If you are travelling by car from Cascais, on the motorway,

it will take you about 20-25 minutes door-to-door. Travelling time varies from the different

locations around. From Lisbon, traffic can add to the duration of journey, but some

teachers do choose to live in Lisbon.

    VISAS FOR NON-EU NATIONALS

The Human Resources Officer will be in contact with everyone offered a position. For those

who need Residence Visas (non-EU nationals), the School will prepare and send the contract

to you. The prospective teacher will then have to take it to the nearest Portuguese

    Embassy/Consulate.

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU, start your application for a Residence Visa

at the earliest opportunity after receiving your offer of employment from the school. Visa

processes can take quite some time. You cannot enter Portugal until you have your

residence visa stamped in your passport.

Information provided by different staff in one Consulate or Embassy is not always

consistent. Therefore, you can use the following as a checklist:

Contract in Portuguese sent by school

Police Records Check / Criminal Record (from your country of birth or from the

country you have been living in during the last year). Please bring a certified

    copy.

    U.S.A. Nationals need F.B.I. clearance

Health Certificate, including reference to infectious diseases

Passport copies (all pages) and passport photos

Insurance that covers travel and medical support up to first day of contract

  • Employees & Teachers Booklet 2014-2015 Page 15 of 35

Proof of accommodation conditions (normally the rental agreement is sufficient but

as you normally cannot get one in time, school can give you a declaration stating

that we work with estate agents who will help you to find a house)

Certificates of educational and professional qualifications

    3 passport sized photos

Please take copies of all documents. Check the length of validity left on your passport. It

must be over one year. Please note that all documents must be translated into Portuguese

and be certified by a Notary Public (Hague Apostille); the Portuguese consulate may be able

to advise you on this procedure.

If you are married and have dependents they can enter Portugal with a tourist visa.

However, they can also apply for a visa in the Portuguese consulate at the same time as

you. In any case they must apply when they arrive for a residence permit under

reagrupamento familiar. You must bring documents certified by the Portuguese consulate

such as marriage certificate for spouse and birth certificates for dependents, to prove family

    link.

Here are some sites you might be interested in looking at:

http://pt.embassyinformation.com/ - Good for checking addresses of the Portuguese

Embassies and Consulates all over the world.

    http://acidi.gov.pt.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/Publicacoes/brochingl/EmigPort_Ingles.pdf -

It will give you information about visas and other matters in Portugal.

The Resident Visa is valid for four months. During these four months you need to go to SEF

(Servio de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras Border and Foreigners Service) and apply for

Residence Permit which will last for one year. Following renewals will last for two years.

    SHIPPING PERSONAL BELONGINGS

If you are going to ship personal belongings (unaccompanied luggage by air or ship), you

will need to make a list (Certificado de Bagagem) of every item you are sending - in

Portuguese - to the Portuguese Consulate to be stamped. When your belongings arrive in

Portugal, this list will be required for Customs clearance. Your shippers will give you all the

relevant information. Mainly for Non-EU Nationals/Citizens, this can be an expensive and

  • St. Dominics International School, Portugal Page 16 of 35

sometimes frustrating process. Please keep in mind that most of the apartments/houses

have most of the basic equipment and furniture and that many inexpensive furniture stores

exist in Portugal; both local stores and international stores, like IKEA.

If needed, the school can give contacts of entities that can provide services for customs

clearance. For Non-EU Nationals/Citizens, when clearing your personal belongings from

customs the visa is required, otherwise they will be held by authorities.

Any shipping costs you want to set against your relocation allowance must be supported by

acceptable receipts. HR will provide details on this.

    ACCOMMODATION

As a guide, a 2-bedroom apartment with basic furniture can start, at 600 700

Euro/month. Most teachers, however, are paying on average 800 Euro/month to have an

apartment close to the coast. Most furnished accommodation will have basic commodities -

washing machine, fridge, stove, etc. Furniture can be basic and minimal, while other

apartments are fully furnished including such items as linen and flower vases. During the

winter months some apartments can be cold and damp. Many people use dehumidifiers and

mobile radiators during these months. Ideally, you should try and find an apartment that

has central heating. Price also depends on location.

You will be expected to pay three months rent in advance, namely for: the first month's

rent, the last month's rent and one month as guarantee for extra-bills, breakages, etc.

Please find below the list of some real estate agents that normally work with our teachers.

    TRANSPORT

Bringing your car cars with foreign registration plates can only be driven for six months

after entering Portugal. After six months it is advisable to register the car in Portugal (fines

are very expensive and the vehicle can be impounded). The taxation to be paid when

registering a car in Portugal can be close to the price of the car itself in other European

    countries.

Buying a car for new cars, Portugal has one of the highest taxation rates in Europe.

Prices for second hand cars can be more reasonable when compared with other European

    markets.

Vehicle inspection when driving a car more than four years old (originally bought in

Portugal or in any other country) it is compulsory to have the vehicle inspected at a

government inspection station. Fines for not having the car inspected and with the green

stamp updated on the windscreen can be very expensive.

Nevertheless, before deciding on any matter related with your car, please ask advice from

    our Human Resources officer.

Public Transport - it is possible to get to school by public transport depending on where

you live; though more time consuming than using private transport. Generally speaking,

public transport in and around Lisbon and its suburbs is good and reliable. Trains, the

underground and city buses are relatively cheap by European standards. Travel to school by

    public transport may require changes before arriving at school;
