GREATER TORONTO EDITION,APRIL 6–13, 2013
A growing number of Canadian women are leaving the traditional workforce to join the emerging trend of female home-based entre-preneurs. Statistics Canada reports 951,600 self-employed women in Canada as of July 2012, up from 790,400 10 years ago.
“Women entrepreneurs are a driving force behind small business in Canada,” said Ruth Todd, Partner, KPMG Enterprise™. “From new mothers to young professionals who faced dif-fi culty breaking into the workforce, Canadian women are turning to innovative self-employ-ment opportunities to support themselves and their families.”
Statistics Canada says self-employment in Canada has grown as fast among women as it has among men in the past 20 years. Even more recently in times of economic uncer-tainty, the rate of self-employed women has grown faster than men. In 2009, a year of downturn for the labour market, the number of self-employed women rose 5.4 per cent from the year before, while the number of fe-male employees overall fell 1.1 per cent.
With the cost of starting a business at an all-time low, combined with cost-saving op-portunities such as social media marketing just a click away, these entrepreneurs are em-bracing self-employment to satisfy their busy schedules and personal values.
“Building my own company has allowed me to spend time doing what I believe in – affecting change and inspiring other women to live their best lives,” said Barb Stegemann, CEO of The 7 Virtues, best-selling author, and mother of two. “As an entrepreneur, I have the ability to do this while pursuing new ven-tures and most importantly, spending time with my family.”
Canadian women face unique self employ-ment challenges every step of the way. KPMG Enterprise identifi es key challenges and rec-ommendations for women entrepreneurs as they establish and expand their businesses: • Launching an idea: Before investing time
and money, careful thought and intensive research is essential. Test your idea or the product, and with an audience that is broad-er than good friends and family. In starting companies, friends often tell us what we want to hear, not what we need to hear.
• Growing your business: If your product or service is not meeting performance levels, step back and reassess your business mod-el. You may have to refresh your business plan; be sure to consider your strengths and weaknesses. You may want to look for a new partner that compensates for what you might lack.
• Getting outside advice: Advisory boards are a support system and sounding board. Small businesses usually lack this kind of support and feel isolated and unsure about who to ask for advice and feedback. Be stra-tegic and selective when you establish your advisory board. If you are not ready to es-tablish an advisory board, consider joining
a local association or trade group that offer peer discussion and feedback as regular agenda items.
• Learning from mistakes: If your business is struggling, learn from your mistakes. Un-derstand objectively why you are struggling and as a leader, drive the necessary change. Communicate honestly with your funders (especially family and friends). After look-ing at why you are struggling, identify two or three things your company does well and build around them. Discontinue, sell, or out-source anything else.
• Managing cash fl ow: Manage cash very closely and reduce the need for cash when re-fi nancing. Step up your cash collection
and closely monitor credit worthiness of both customers and suppliers. Get coun-sel from professionals that understand the small business landscape. Build a strong relationship with your banker. There is long term value in keeping your banker in-formed and engaged in your business goals and objectives.
• Assessing risks: Regularly assess and repo-sition to manage your key risks. If you are too close to the business, you can’t objec-tively see the risks. You may even fi nd ways to refute the possibility of risk. Get an out-side viewpoint. Work with a trusted adviser that brings specifi c industry insight aligned to your business. ●
Women are a driving force
Source: Canada News Wire
Recently, Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay, Q.C., Associate Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament for Delta-Richmond East attended the fi rst annual Abilities in Mind (AIM) conference. The event brings together employers, service providers and individuals with disabilities to promote un-derstanding and exchange best practices.
“Our Government is striving to remove barriers to employment for people with dis-abilities by helping them get the right skills and training and encouraging employers to create inclusive workplaces,” said Findlay on behalf of Diane Finley, Minister of Human Re-sources and Skills Development. “We need all of our available skilled and talented Canadi-ans at work in the interest of the future health and competitiveness of our economy.”
Canadians with disabilities have a tre-
mendous amount to offer employers, but they remain underrepresented in the work-force. That is why, through Economic Action Plan 2012, the federal government invested an additional $30 million in the Opportuni-ties Fund for Persons with Disabilities and created a Panel on Labour Market Opportuni-ties for Persons with Disabilities to examine successes, best practices and barriers to em-ploying people with disabilities.
The Government of Canada supports nu-merous other programs and initiatives to pro-mote the inclusion and full participation of people with disabilities in Canadian society including the Registered Disability Savings Plan, the Enabling Accessibility Fund, Labour Market Agreements for Persons with Disabili-ties, and post-secondary education assistance measures for students with disabilities. ●

Following suitChief Information Offi cers (CIOs) want to hire IT professionals who are “well suited” for the job – both literally and fi guratively. According to a new Robert Half Technology survey, one-third (33 per cent) of CIOs said a business suit is the most appropriate attire for someone in-terviewing for an IT position. Twenty-nine per cent of respondents favoured tailored sepa-rates, while another 29 per cent prefer khakis and a collared shirt.
“An interview is an IT worker’s chance to make a strong fi rst impression,” said Megan Slabinski, district president of Robert Half Tech-nology in Canada. “Appearing overly casual could lead the hiring manager to believe the candidate does not take the position seriously.”
Slabinski added that networking before the interview can help job candidates get a sense of how to dress when meeting with a hiring man-ager. “Candidates should do their homework – if you are working with the fi rm’s HR rep-resentative or a recruiter, take the time to ask about the dress code and what may be deemed appropriate attire for the interview.”
Robert Half Technology offers these addi-tional interview attire tips:
DON’T OVERDO ITUltimately, you want your experience and
skills to be the focus of the interview – not your outfi t. Avoid any distracting clothing or jewellery, as well as excessive perfume, cologne or makeup.
TURN OFF ELECTRONIC “ACCESSORIES”
Make sure any mobile device you have with you is off before the meeting.
PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILSDon’t overlook the less obvious aspects of
your appearance, like your shoes, socks and accessories. Make sure your outfi t is free of wrinkles and stains, your hair and nails are well groomed, and your shoes are polished.
WEAR SOMETHING COMFY You want to look as relaxed as possible, so
avoid uncomfortable clothing. If you purchase new interview attire, wear it a few times to break it in before your meeting.
DRESS THE PART FOR A VIDEO INTERVIEW
Even if your interview is via webcam, you want to look the part. Make sure you dress appropriately from head to toe and the back-ground is free of distractions. The national sur-vey was developed by Robert Half Technology, a leading provider of information technology professionals on a project and full-time basis, and conducted by an independent research fi rm. The survey is based on more than 270 telephone interviews with CIOs from a ran-dom sample of Canadian companies with 100 or more employees. ●
One-third of CIOs say IT candidates should wear formal interview attire
