A report in the Economic Times this week highlighted the fact that those with visible tattoos have more problems getting hired into certain professions.

The report by Doctor Andrew Timming won’t come as a surprise to many but it’s well worth a read. Tattoos divide opinion and most people have strong views on the subject one way or another.

The thing that bothers me about the report is that once again it highlights how some recruiters can make a decision based on one obvious parameter and miss out on the subtle signs that the person they just passed over would be a great employee.

I’ll be honest, the extent to which people are judged on their appearance is one thing that’s always bothered me about the corporate world. To me it all comes under the same umbrella; people should not be judged simply on how they look be that their hair, the suit they wear, their weight, their tattoos or their skin colour.

And I’m not just saying that because I’ve always desperately wanted bright pink hair, honest.

Personal feelings aside though, when it comes to recruitment we need to look beyond the obvious if we want to avoid costly recruitment mistakes. Great employees don’t always come in the perfect package and those who have something to hide are usually very adept at hiding it.

Perhaps years spent in and around recruitment has made me naturally suspicious but here are some common mistakes:

• Those with gaps in their CV usually have nothing to hide, those who have done something they don’t want you to know about will have already hidden it.

• Don’t be fooled by a spectacular CV, anyone could have written it.

• A signed application form does not carry more weight than a CV simply because someone has signed it to say it’s “true to the best of my knowledge”. If they are hiding something untoward it’s most likely a lot worse than lying on an application form.

• The people who end up getting jobs are, very often, those who are best at being interviewed and not necessarily the best person for the job.

• Do NOT be fooled by a smart appearance. If con artists always looked like Dick Dastardly they wouldn’t be terribly successful.

The only way to sort the wheat from the chaff is by a robust and structured interview. Draw up an accurate and detailed Job Description and Person Specification, draft a range of behavioural questions to explore whether someone is truly capable of all they claim to be and don’t be afraid to probe and push for greater detail if you need it.

Oh, and don’t rely on references to allay any fears; I’ve seen plenty of bogus references in my time and a little extra detective work up front can save you a lot of time and expense further down the line.

The prefect candidate does not have it tattooed across their forehead, and if they did you probably wouldn’t hire them anyway.

“Another great response & we will definitely employ one of our

applicants.”

The search for foster carers in Cumbria will step up a gear next week with launch of a new television advert. The advert features real local foster carers talking about why they foster and is part of Cumbria County Council’s “Become part of Cumbria’s biggest family” campaign.

The advert will run on ITV Border in the first two weeks of October and had its first airing in the middle of Coronation Street on 30 September.

Launched online on Friday 21 September the advert has already clocked up over 760 views on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCmJkMZ99Mg ) and multiple likes, shares and re-tweets on Facebook and Twitter.

Kevin, one of the foster carers featured in the advert, said:

“I’m really passionate about being a foster carer and I’m really keen for people to think about it and come forward if they’re interested. Being on the TV is going to be a new experience for me, and it’s quite a big thing to put yourself out there in public like this, but this is so important that I was happy to do it. To me being a foster carer is a way of life and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Kathryn, another of the carers featured, said:

“My husband and I both really enjoyed being involved in the TV ad, but it’s certainly going to be strange seeing ourselves in the Corrie ad break! Like all the foster carers we know we do it for the children, we know what a difference good foster carers can make to their lives. That’s why we put ourselves forward to be part of the council’s campaign, people need to see that its people just like them that foster, we’re not that unusual!”

Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

“The “Biggest family” campaign is all about getting people thinking about fostering and giving them the confidence to get in touch. We know lots of people consider it, if just a few of them chose to take the next step we could go a long way to recruiting the additional carers we need. We have over 600 children in care and we need foster carers, they make a huge difference to children’s lives.”

The advert can be seen on the county council’s YouTube channel, the fostering website and the council’s facebook page, search #cumbriafostering.

Anne continued:

“Even if you don’t want to become a carer you can still help by going online, viewing the advert and sharing it with your friends on social media. That way we can get thousands watching the ad.”

TV stardom beckons for foster carers
