I had the opportunity to travel across much of thecountry in June. Everything waas so lush andgreen and beautiful. I really enjoyed seeing thequeen anne’s lace and the black-eyed susans! With all that green came rivers that were brim-ming with water flooded fields, and humidity. It really reminded me of how much our midwest-ern members struggle to manage the humidity intheir units so their animals will live in comfortand be ready for fall shows.

Now that I am back at home, I am busy planning a

neighborhood 4th of July BBQ party and parade. Our neighborhood loves to get together, we al-ways have a Christmas event and this year we areadding a n Independence Day event. As we cele-brate the independence of our country and allthat that means for each one of us, I am remindedhow lucky we are to live in a country where wecan make choices about what is impoprtant to us.We can raise this wonderful animal that makes ushappy and keeps us at peace. Enjoy your Holiday!

President’s MessageBranches have held their summer meeting, drafted resolutions and submitted nomi-nees for National Directors. My personal rule of thumb is, I sign every nominationsheet and put the name of the nominees in front of the membership. The membershipdecides, as it should be.

But just because I sign a sheet for a nominee does not mean I necessarily vote for thatperson. I have several criteria I look for in a potential director;

1. What is his/her chinchilla experience? Is the person an active member in thechinchila community? Is th eperson mostly successful in their ranching practice?

2. Is the person Pro Empress? After all, they are wanting to guide the organization.

3. Does the nominee have an open mind and is willing to compromise? Very important when working withother directors.

4. Does the nominee offer anythng new towards ranching, breeding, quality evaluation and management?

Now each potential candidate should decide if they can fill this criteria. And for the nominee there is a bigger itemto consider. Can the nominee afford to participate at the National Board meetings and the National Show? Can thenominee spare the time to arrive fridays and stay until Sunday night so all Empress business can be completed?

These are my guidelines. Consider them carefully and see, if they might give you some helpful hints when morethan one candidate is up for election.Gary Neubauer

I love the National Directors Sum-mer Meeting. One might think I am

a bit crazy to say that, because it is traveling to a locationand paying out of pocket for all costs for the weekend.

But the reality is that we accomplish so much. It is likeminded people, coming together to discusss and makeplans for the future of Empress.

There are no distractions, all directors are focused andwilling to attack the task at hand and keep going until wereach the end. This is dedication. This is what makes thesummer board meeting so exciting.

We had a lot of exciting news this year. Our membershipdrive ended with 66 new members. We were able toincrease membership on the east to the extent that 2 newbranches were able to be sustained by the active mem-bers. This is exciting news!

We have a number of younger producers who havecommitted to becoming good judges. They are attendingthe seminars. They have a good eye for quality , we seeit at the seminars when they place animals and pelts andgive accurate comments. But we also see it on thejudging table because they do well at the shows. All theyneed is experience and they will gain that when you allowthem to trainee judge at your shows. Again, excitingnews.

We have an Annual Meeting coming up. We approvedthe location as Kansas City. We are tried to make thetopics of presentations progressive and topics you wantto hear about. We also tried to make this very affordablewith $69 room rates that includes a breakfast. Again, exciting!

To save time and money all meals were eaten togetherand prepared by Maxine in the hotel room and she evenhad a small BBQ grill on her little patio. This allowed usto maximize time and spend time together even when thebusiness was done.

Director MessageSummer Board Meeting

This year we started at 8:30 AM, took a breakaround 1:30 for lunch and to go see the proposed2016 National Show hotel. We returned at about3:30 and continued until 6:30. Sunday AM weresumed at 8:00 AM and continued until noon.I for one enjoyed every minute of it! We had somesuccesses to report on:

The membership drive Our finances A new Recognition program Two new branches

We also had some serious issues to discuss. In theend, we came together and got the job done. Iappreciate the diligence and commitment of eachDirector.

Now I am looking forward to the Annual Meeting –it should be a good one!

Chinchilla First Aide: Broken LegFor chinchillas, a leg break can be a fatal event. The pain of a break can send a chinchilla into shock, causingdeath within a short period of time. In cases where a chinchilla goes into shock and you find the animal, it needsto be immediately warmed and given a raisin or a drop of Karo syrup. In the case that your animal is not inshock and merely “dealing” with a broken leg, you will need to have the leg set. For pet owners and those withvery few chinchillas, it is best to seek veterinary assistance for this. For breeders, taking every broken leg to thevet is not a cost effective or practical solution and we are all more familiar with the anatomy of our belovedchinchillas. The first thing to do in setting a broken leg is to create a splint. Chinchilla legs are very small, sopopsicle sticks and manufactured plastic splints are often too large.

The items in the photo are all good items to have in your firstaide kit and each can be used for splinting a leg. You need anantiseptic such as rubbing alcohol or betadine (DO NOT USEHYDROGEN PEROXIDE: Hydrogen peroxide is very good atkilling everything, including the good living cells of the animal,if you use this in an emergency…rinse the area thoroughlywith water after application), q-tips, paper clips, paper tape, self adhesive bandage, draw out salve and/or antibiotic oint-ment, and gauze pads are always handy for open wounds.

Draw out salve is a must have item for infected wounds or abcesses. When you have a large open wound fromfighting, you can put this salve on the wound and it helps to draw out any infection while keeping the woundmoist enough for healing. This has saved a number of my chinchillas after big fights with wounds that were notimmediately obvious and became infected.

Back to making a splint! You will need a couple of paper clips and at leasttwo q-tips depending on how you plan to splint the leg. You need tounfold the long end of the paper clip to make an “L” shape and cut theends off the q-tips. You can discard the fluffy ends from the q-tips.

The next step is to take your paper tapeand start attaching the portions of yoursplint to each other.Make sure that you wrap the ends of theq-tips and the ends of the paper clip

well enough that when you squeeze on any part of it, there are no sharp edgesto be felt!

Next, tape up the elbow of your splint. Now you are done! You should have anice, sturdy splint made from very cost effective household items. You can addadditional elbows onto the splint to create larger splints to span the entire leg, just make sure that the elbow bends conform to the natural bend of thechinchilla’s leg to prevent discomfort.

The last part is always the trickiest part. Now you need to wrestle with anangry, hurting chinchilla to get the splint on. I don’t have enough hands totake photos of each of these steps, but I will try to walk you through them!

First, remove excess hair on the leg. When hair is pressed into wounds, itcauses more irritation to the wounds and can exacerbate infections andprevent healing. Any open wounds should be cleaned with an antiseptic andthen covered in antibiotic ointment (for fresh wounds) or draw out salve(older, dried up wounds). The areas with wounds need to be covered in athin layer of gauze which should be held in place with paper tape. You willstart the splint by wrapping paper tape around the top portion of the legwhere you are attaching the splint, then lay the splint alongside the brokenleg and tape the splint in place. IMPORTANT!!! Do not tape this as tightly aspossible, the taping should simply hold the splint in place along the leg, notbe so tight that it constricts blood flow through the foot. Once you havetaped the splint to the chinchilla’s leg, you can now wrap the leg in selfadhesive bandage. The entire splint should be changed every 4-7 days untilthe leg has healed.

The Water Delivery System Affects the Rateof Weight Gain in C57BL/6J Mice during the

First Week after WeaningTaken from the Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Copyright 2011 by the AmericanAssociation for Laboratory Animal Science. The full report is on file in the ECBC National Office. Contact the NationalOffice to receive the full report.

Alexander Gordon* and Jeff Wyatt Facility planners, IACUCs, veterinary staff, and researchers makechoices on water delivery systems for rodents on the basis of cost effectiveness, water quality, risk ofmalfunction, and potential effect on animal health and welfare. Here we compare biometrics, includingweight trends, of newly arrived mice unfamiliar with automated watering; weight trends of weanlings;fecundity of mice; and risk of malfunction among 3 water delivery techniques: water bottle only, combi-nation of automated delivery and water bottle, and automated system only. There was no statisticallysignificant difference among the 3 experimental groups with respect to fecundity, mortality, and deliverymalfunction. On the basis of body weight trends, the health and wellbeing of the mice used in thesestudies were not affected by the water delivery system or housing density after the first week; however, there was a significant difference in the growth rate at 21 to 28 days of age among the 3 groups of pups. The mice receiving both automated delivery and water bottles experienced higher growth rates from 21to 28 days of age than did the other experimental groups. However, after 35 days of age, weight trendsdid not differ among the groups. Our results suggest that mice weaned into the same method of waterdelivery as their respective dams thrive equally well among the 3 tested water delivery systems.

Study design. All cages of mice in the animal room were visually checked daily by animal care staff for morbidity, mortality, and water delivery malfunction. Water delivery malfunction was identified by discovering excessively wetbedding. For the first 21 d of age, all mice were weighed weekly to evaluate growth trends and to determine pregnancy.Male mice were euthanized when pregnancy was confirmed by weight gain and appearance (prominent nipples and alarge abdomen) of the female mice. Without opening or removing them fully from the rack, cages were checked daily forpups. Pups were counted without removal from the nest during the first 14 d of life to avoid disturbing the dam andpossibly leading to maternal neglect or cannibalization.8 Weanling mice from each of the 3 study groups were housed insingle-sex, same-litter groups after weaning at 21 d of age, with a housing density of 1 to 5 animals per cage; thishousing scheme is the preferred method for studies involving inheritance of body weight.2 All mice at weaning receivedapproximately 4 pieces of water-moistened rodent chow in the front left cage floor per IACUC-approved policy to easeaccess to chow and water. Mice were maintained in these housing groups for the duration of the experiment (49 d ofage). Sentinel mice were tested serologically quarterly for mouse hepatitis virus, mouse parvovirus, and mouse minutevirus and were screened by perianal tape test and zinc sulfate fecal floatation for endoparasites and fur pluck forectoparasites. Sentinels were tested annually after a terminal blood collection for mouse hepatitis virus, mouseparvovirus, mouse minute virus, ciliaassociated respiratory bacillus, , mouse rotavirus, ectromeliavirus, Theiler disease virus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, mouse adenovirus 1 and 2, pneumonia virus of mice, polyoma virus, reovirus, and Sendai virus. In addition, parasite screening involving a perianal tape test, fecal floatation, and cecal exam for endoparasites and fur pluck tests for ectoparasites was performed.

Statistical analysis. Data analysis was completed by using SAS 9.2 (SAS Institute, Cary, NC). For cross-sectional (singletime point) comparison among the groups, Kruskal–Wallis statistics were used. For analysis of longitudinal data, generalized estimating equations, which do not assume normality of the error and thus are more robust, were used.ANOVA was used to compare the body weight growth rates among all the groups. A value of less than 0.05 wasregarded as statistically significant.

Euthanasia. According to IACUC policy, mice were euthanized by using CO2 at a regulated flow equating to 20% of thecage volume per minute (Euthanex, Allentown, PA) followed by cervical dislocation after euthanasia.

ResultsThree female mice, one assigned to each study group, failed to conceive or may have repeatedly cannibalized pups andfecundity would be similar between the different watering systems.

Materials and MethodsThis study was reviewed and approved by the University of Rochester Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee andwas conducted in an AAALAC-accredited facility.

Mice. C57BL/6J mice ( = 120; 60 male and 60 female; age, 42 to 49 d; The Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, ME), aninbred strain that is commonly used as a background in genetically modified mice, were chosen for the study togenerate strain specific results and recommendations. The mice, which were accustomed to receiving water via waterbottles only, were randomly assigned into 3 groups each consisting of 20 breeding pairs. The breeding pairs wereweighed and randomly assigned on arrival to 1 of 3 water delivery systems. All of the mice were weighed 1 wk afterarrival. Female mice were monitored weekly for evidence of pregnancy (body weight and appearance). The length oftime from arrival to birth of the first litter was compared between the 3 experimental groups of mice. The number ofmouse pups per litter; weaning weights; and first, second, third, and fourth week postweaning weights were comparedamong the 3 experimental groups.

Housing. Mice were housed in 7.75 × 12 × 6.5 in., polycarbonate, solid-bottom cages (Allentown Caging Equipment,Allentown, NJ) with filtered microisolation tops on HEPA-filtered, directexhaust, ventilated racks (product no.MDJU140MVPCD1, Allentown Caging Equipment). Mice were fed a commercial laboratory diet (PMI Lab Diet 5010Rodent Chow, PMI International, Brentwood, CO), that was autoclaved with the caging and were exposed to a 12:12-hlight:dark photocycle. Cages contained with less than 1 in. of corncob bedding (Bedo’cobs, The Andersons, Maumee,OH) and 1 Nestlet (Ancare Company, Bellmore, NY). Cages were changed on a top in the animal housing room every2 wk, with the exception of cages housing dams with litters younger than 21 d old, which were not disturbed for thefirst 3 d after birth and then were changed at 2-wk intervals. Water was supplied by the City of Rochester afterchlorination to 0.5 ppm and treatment by reverse osmosis. Water in the automated delivery system was treated byreverse osmosis. Water bottle water was treated by reverse osmosis and autoclaved. Mice assigned to groups A and Breceived water in polysulfone low-profile bottles (Allentown Caging and Equipment Company) equipped with a 2.5-in.,stainless steel sipper tube in a size 8.5 neoprene cork. Mice in groups B and C were placed on racks fitted withautomated watering systems and connected to the manifold (Edstrom Industries, Waterford, WI). Automated waterlines were flushed daily automatically and then every 6 mo after 45 min of contact with 20 ppm sodium hypochlorite.

Water leaks. During the study there were 2 water leaks: one from a bottle and another from an automated valve. Inboth cases, the animals were transferred to new cages before adverse effects ccurred (for example, hypothermia anddrowning). The leak event occurrence was too low to become statistically significant. There was no statisticallysignificant difference ( > 0.05) between the 3 experimental groups with regard to water delivery malfunction.

DiscussionOn the basis of body weight trends, the health and wellbeing of the mice used in these studies were not affected bythe water delivery system after 28 d of age. By 49 d of age, there was no significant difference in mean body weightbetween the 3 experimental groups. These results can assure future investigators that mice experiencing onlyautomated water delivery tend to be as healthy as those receiving water bottles only or a combination of water bottlesand automated water delivery. However, investigators measuring weight trends in mice from weaning to 28 d shouldexamine their measurements closely, because differences in measured growth rates may reflect the water deliverysystem used.

In conclusion, our results suggest that mice weaned into the same system of water delivery as their respective damsthrive equally well among the 3 tested water delivery systems over 49 d of age. After 28 d of age, mice receiving onlyautomated water tended to be as healthy as those receiving water bottles only or a combination of water bottles andautomated water delivery. However, growth rates from 21 to 28 d of age were statistically reduced when pups wereoffered the automated water delivery system only. In addition, investigators may want to consider possible contribu-tions of weaning body weight and housing density on mortality. With the exception of specialized studies that requirewater additives to individual cages, we find that automated water delivery without supplementation with bottles is anacceptable option for average-weight C57BL/6J pups.

This is the question I asked of our members, just what is inyour chinchilla first aid kit. Many of them came throughwith answers which I am grateful for.

I even added a little incentive and said one lucky responderwould receive a chinchilla sticker a fundraiser item form theWashington Branch. Iva Hegland won the sticker! Congrat-ulations!

Sumiko De La Vega keeps terramycin ointment for eyeinfections; Tinactin, sulfur powder or captan for use in thedust bath for fungus; and Kaolin- Pectinfor diarrhea.

Jessica Godin keeps Baytril; Gentocinand triple antibiotic ointmen,

Iva Hegland keeps colloidal silver forcuts and sores; Mylicon drops for gasproblems; and kitten or goat milk re-placer for new kits.

Tabitha Lindsay says Q-Tips are amust have, as well as paper tape and apaper clip. See why on page 7.

Jenie Rich feels Blu- Kote is an essen-tial item used for cuts and small wounds.

Trina Davina keeps Q-Tips, gauze, needles and Bag Balm

The “must have” in my First Aid kit was triple antibioticointment. Vaseline and a small pair of cuticle scissorswhich could sometimes help with those stubborn male hairrings. Any athlete’s foot powder with Tinactin to be used atthe first sight of fungus. As mention by several, Q-Tips. Ialso kept a little saline solution.

When a letter arrived from Dr. Beth Ann, I could notimagine what she was sending to me. I was thrilled to seeher response to this question. Given the years of experi-ence between Dr. Beth Ann and her mother Alice Kline, I

was excited to see what was on this list.

Beth Ann says her first aid kit is pretty simple, not assimple as ours however! Here is her list;

▪ Surgical scissors and tweezers▪ Sterile cotton, gauze and Q-tips▪ Peroxide▪ Glyoxide▪ Rubbing Alcohol▪ Mineral Oil▪ Baby Castoria▪ Black Strap Molasses▪ NFZ Powder▪ Vick’s

▪ Dyne▪ Nutri-Cal▪ Eyedroppers▪ Feeding Syringe small enoughfor babies

From the Veterinarian▪ Opathalmic Antibiotic Ointment▪ Quadritop Ointment▪ Panalog Ointment▪ Yogurt -Probiotic▪ Old White many times laun-dered t-shirts, towels and whitesocks

Over the years I think we alwaysend up with extra ointments or items that proveduseful that one time, the items listed above aresome of the basics.

Thank you to all the folks who took a few minutesand contributed what they keep in their first aid kit!Good Luck building your first aid kit!

EdstromAutomated Watering System

Where we started:The concept of providing drinking water toanimals automatically was born from creativethinking, engineering wit, and a desire to makea difference. In 1969 Bill Edstrom Sr., a me-chanical engineer at an automotive companyin Milwaukee and a chinchilla hobbyist, knewit was time for a change. And that’s when heinvented an apparatus that would enable theautomated delivery of clean, fresh water toanimals living in cages.

Bill Edstrom is a lifetime Empress membersand recently attended the 2014 NationalShow.

Edstrom Automated Watering Systemincludes:

▪ Basic Pressure Regulator/FilterStation reduces incoming waterpressure

▪ Flex -tube is easy to install; softnon-toxic PVC tubing

▪ Tubing Stand-off keeps Flew-tube away from playful animals

▪ Original Drinking Valve andMounting Clip for fresh water atany time

▪ Drain Valve flushes water linesto ensure clean water
