Fenix was founded in 1990 as one of the fi rst private companies in the Czech Republic following the “Velvet” Revolution. The fi rst items produced were the successfully marketed ECOSUN electric radiant heating panels, however, as market demand increased these products were followed by ECOFLEX electric convectors, ECOFLOOR heating cables and mats and ECOFILM heating fi lms. The company also offers a wide range of supplementary products including heating system controls, cable kits and cable mats. With the increase in demand the structure of the company developed – for the reason of retaining maximum fl exibility a holding company structure was chosen, with individual and independent members.

The following companies were incorporated successively: Fenix s.r.o. – plant producing electrical heating systems; Fenix Trading s.r.o. – trading company; Fenix Slovakia s.r.o. – production and trading company, representing FENIX in Slovakia; Fenix Group a.s. – a company which provides property management and services (strategic planning, administration of property, economic and fi nancial services); Flexel International Ltd. – manufacturing and trading company located in the United Kingdom. In 2008 FENIX Holding – acquired the production and trading company Aztec Europe Ltd., – manufacturer of special applications, such as mirror demisting heaters, vivarium heaters, caravan and

Principle of infrared heatingWhereas in convection heating the air is warmed by a con-vector which then transfers heat as it fl ows over the objects that are to be heated (walls, furniture), Radiant heating panels transfer heat mainly through radiant energy. Upon encountering objects (walls, furniture, fl oors), radiant energy is partially refl ected (approx. 15 %), the majority (approx. 85 %) is absorbed by the objects. This radiant energy is converted to heating energy as it raises the temperature of the objects, which then transfer heat to the cooler air by convection. Thanks to unique technology Silicating, high temperature radiant panels reach high emissivity up to 0,98 mu.

Unique technologiesFenix utilises unique state-of-the art technology in respect of the fi nished panel surfaces. (Thermoquartz and Thermocrystal for low temperature panels and Silicating for high temperature panels).

radiant heating panels

The principles mentioned create the following advantages:

the surface of the radiant panel generates a heat fl ow whose spectrum is in the wavelength not greater than 5 micrometers and is thus absorbed to a large degree by the human body: people are therefore heated in a manner similar to the objects in the room. when the radiant heat fl ow increases the temperature of the objects in the room of 20–22 °C, comfort conditions are achieved even with air temperatures of 18–19 °C which can lead to energy savings of 18–24 %. radiant panels permit the temperature distribution in a room to be more vertically balanced giving a 1–2 degree difference between the fl oor and the ceiling (for convection heating the difference is given as 1 °C per metre of height, 30–50 cm of height). there is less fl ow movement therefore dust particles due to brownian movement are less thus reducing the risk of illnesses – asthma, mucous membrane infection, etc. increased wall temperatures mean a lower possibility of surface condensation, albeit the humidity in the room is not lowered.glass is not “transparent” (we might say “transthermant”) when it comes to radiation with wavelengths over 3 and thus the radiant fl ow is not lost through windowpanes. the panels do not require maintenance

GR glass radiant panels feature an attractive and timeless design. Due to the aesthetic appearance these panels are primarily intend-ed for heating reception rooms, offi ces and others. Glass panels consist of a 12 mm toughened glass plate heating element, thermo fuse, and connection cable. They are designed to be mounted on a wall connecting the connection cable to the wiring box.

GR panels

GR SET – panels with wireless regulationUse: These types are derived from standard GR panels but they are additionally fi tted with an integrated BPT-SP2 wireless receiver (see the chapter THERMOSTATS AND CONTROLS) and a supply lead fi tted with a plug. A wireless programmable thermostat is supplied with every panel as part of the package and so it is possible that, after unpacking the product, hanging it on the wall and connecting it to the socket, the panel can be operated immediately, without any assistance from a specialized installation company. The panels are intended mainly for supplementary installation, without the necessity of intervention into the existing electrical system. GR SET panels can be supplemented with chromium-coated supports (see page 9) and thus a very aesthetic and convenient portable heater can be created. Glass colours: white, black, yellow-green, red and mirror.

NOTIFICATION

ECOSUN, MR and GR radiant panels are only equipped with a limiting thermostat – suitable regulation is essential for correct and economical operation; see the chapter THERMOSTATS AND CONTROLS. In the case of GR and GR SET glass panels, the limiting thermostat switches off the panels at an average temperature of 90 °C, and therefore the real thermal output of the panels is approximately 10 % lower than the wattage. For this reason and also for the improvement of the dynamics of the whole heating system, we recommend that the installed wattage is increased by 20 % in contrast with the result of the heat loss calculation. GR and GR SET panels can be supplemented with chromium-coated supports which enable the panel to be placed on the fl oor – e.g. in proximity to glass surfaces or to create a stylish portable heater.

SUPPORTS FOR GR PANELS – for applications where the GR panel cannot be hung on a wall (e.g. in the case of glass surfaces), a set of chromium plated supports can be used for the placement of the panels on the fl oor.

The GR panel is inserted into apertures in the supports and subsequently the supports are affi xed to the panels with the help of adjustment screws. The panel is stable on these supports; the bottom edge of the panel is 55 mm above the fl oor. For permanent instal-lations, we recommend that the supports are attached to the fl oor using screws – in the base there are two openings with a diameter of 6 mm for screws with countersunk heads. The supports are intended for use only with the GR type and are only for horizontal installation. In the case of vertical installation (particularly for GR 1000 panels), there is a signifi cantly higher risk that the user may accidentally knock the panel over. GR panels on supports must not be exposed to excessive pressure – there is a danger of tipping if it is placed freely, and if the supports are attached to the fl oor, there is a risk of damage to the glass in the places where supports are attached.

PRODUCT Cat. No.Supports for GR panels Contents of the set: chromium plated supports – 2 pcs (base diameter 130 mm), plastic covers for the brackets for the GR panel – 4 pcs, mains plug (to be installed on the supply lead if the panel is to be used as a mobile heater)

The panel is then placed into the prepared hanging brackets. After the attachment nuts have been tightened, the rail, which is placed between the back part of the panel and the hanging bracket, is attached fi rmly. The rail is in the shape of a rectangle with the dimensions 530×90 mm; the distance between the attachment openings is 260 mm.

IRC PANELS radiant heating for infrared cabins

The principle behind infrared cabins (infrared saunas)In infrared cabins (also called infrared saunas), so-called radiant heat is used – it works on a similar principle to ECOSUN heating panels. In this case, however, it is aimed at warming the muscle tissue of the user up to a depth of approximately 4 cm with the help of infrared radiation. Thanks to this deep warming of the organ-ism, intensive sweating takes places at a lower air temperature than in the case of classic steam saunas – during the whole of the user’s stay in the cabin, the air temperature ranges between 30 and approx. 55 °C.

Infrared cabins can be used over longer intervals, with the aim of freeing one’s body from harmful substances which are released when sweating, or in shorter intervals in which the aim is to warm up the muscle tissue before expected physical exercise – muscle stretching, body-building, running etc.

Advantages of infrared cabins with IRC panels

Infrared heating warms up the skin faster and the heat also penetrates deeper into the tissues than heat from hot steamThanks to the lower air temperatures involved, they are also suitable for patients with cardiovascular diseases or respiratory diseasesIn contrast with other types, they have considerably lower acquisition costs and minimum negative infl uences on the surrounding environment – humidityThe operation costs are lower by 1/3 to 1/2 in comparison with steam saunas (lower air temperature in the cabin; up to 80 % of energy is used for direct heating of the body)Large-surface IRC radiant panels heat evenly across their whole surface and for example in contrast with ceramic radiators, the performance of which is concentrated into a small surface with a high temperature, they heat the whole body signifi cantly better and more evenlyThe possibility of minimizing spatial requirements – a cabin can be installed in an area as small as 1 m2 – suitable also for smaller fl atsModular assembly without the necessity to use special tools in connection with the IRT regulator – the option of assembling the infrared cabin without expert aid

CONTROL UNIT – IRT 01 REGULATOR – The IRT regulator maintains a set temperature on the surface of radiant panels, as well as the required operating time of the heating and lighting of the infrared cabin. It contains a power unit (installed within a cavity under the bench) to which IRC panels are connected using plugs, and also a control unit, light and supply cable. Up to 6 IRC panels can be connected. All IRC panels are equipped with a special connector and the offered sizes can be combined as needed; however, the total wattage mustn’t exceed 3.4 kW and one (only one) of the panels used must have an integrated temperature sensor. The power unit is connected to a 230 V socket, protected with a 30 mA residual current device.

Set selectionAccording to the size of the infrared cabin you wish to install, choose and combine the offered panel sizes in such a way that they best cover the space within the infra-red cabin – the lower and upper halves of the body. It is ideal if the panels surround the user on at least three sides. There can be a maximum of six panels for every control unit, from which one (but only one) must be equipped with an integrated temperature probe. The maximum wattage of all the panels attached to one control unit can be up to 3.4 kW. An IRT-01 regulator is necessary to control the panels. The regulator comes with the set, which includes a control panel and power unit. The control panel should be installed inside the infrared cabin within reach of the user. The power unit is installed in a cavity under the bench and should not be easy to access. The connecting leads for the IRC panels are, after installation on the wall, connected to the power unit with the aid of connectors – the connectors from the panels, lighting, control units and connecting leads have different dimensions, so it isn’t possible to confuse them and connection can be carried out by a non-expert user.If lighting is required it is also possible to connect a light to the power unit; a connection cable comes as part of the set. It is necessary to equip panels with a suitable protective cover, allowing the correct operation of the panel. We recommend using the wooden covering frames that are offered, as they are constructed size-wise to exactly fi t the dimensions of the IRC panelsWooden frames not only fulfi l a protective function, but also attach panels to walls – the panels alone are not fi tted with any mounting apertures or brackets.

IRC RADIANT PANELS – FENIX has manufactured and supplied IRC panels for foreign producers of infrared cabins (Austria, Germany) since 2004. Now it is offering these panels on the Czech market together with a control unit – IRT regulator – and this also as a DIY kit.

Overview of ECOFLOOR heating cables and recommended usage

ECOFLOOR electric fl oor heating systems ensure ideal heat distri-bution and, by decreasing undesirable air circulation, reduce dust levels. These systems offer great comfort, economic and reliable operation, and long lifetime. They preserve free fl oor space by eliminating the need for various heating elements, radiators and heat distribution systems. The principal advantage of electric fl oor heating is easy and separate temperature control in individual rooms. Once installed, it is completely maintenance free.We provide 10 year warranty for underfl oor heating cables and mats and 2 year warranty for cables used for outdoor application (gutter, eaves, pipes).

DIRECT HEATING SYSTEMSECOFLOOR CABLES AND MATS

ECOFLOOR heating systems are available in two basic variants – heating cable circuits and heating mats. In fact the two systems do not differ from one another very much. In both cases, the heating system consists of a heating cable, either separate or fi xed to a supporting fi breglass cloth (heating mat). This modern fl oor heating system permits easy and effective regulation. The heating cable circuit or mats are placed directly beneath tiles in a thin layer of permanently fl exible cement so the tiled surface heats up relatively quickly (circa 20 min). Temperature control is sensitive and quick to react. Heating cable circuits or mats are suitable for renovated fl oors where the fi nal fl oor height is not a constraint.

SEMI-STORAGE AND STORAGE HEATINGECOFLOOR CABLES AND MATS

Heating cables or mats in semi-storage systems are placed in a layer of concrete 4–5 cm thick. The mat’s recommended output wattage is 160 W/m2. Heat is accumulated for 16 hours a day at a time when electricity costs are lowest. The accumulated heat is radiated from the fl oor surface not only during the process, but also for a further 8 hours. One effi cient solution is to divide the total desired heating system 70/30 between the fl oor heating and another source, such as a convection heater or an ECOSUN radiant panel.

Storage fl oor heating is a system that takes advantage of cheaper electricity tariffs – usually at night. During this time, heat is accumulated into the mass of the fl oor using ECOFLOOR electrical heating cables or mats. Throughout the rest of the day, the heat is gradually released from the fl oor to the room. In storage systems, heating mats or cables are placed in a layer of concrete 10 to 14 cm thick. The accumulated—stored—heat is then released during the day into the area to be heated. We recommend an output wattage of 250 to 300 W/m2 for ECOFLOOR mats used in this type of system. Eight hours of low-tariff electricity should be used to accumulate the heat.

OUTDOOR APPLICATIONS

Ice and snow melting Installing electric heating cables in outdoor areas, together with a thermostat, prevents both ice formation and snow accumulation. Once installed, the system works entirely automatically and is only operational when it is snowing or if ice is forming on roads and walkways.

De-icing gutters and eaves troughsIn all parts of Europe other than in the south, winter brings a heavy load to many buildings as ice builds up in the gutters and eaves troughs. Installing an ECOFLOOR electric heating cable (with a protective screen) into gutters and eaves troughs is a good solution for such problems. The cables are installed using special plastic clips placed inside gutters and eaves troughs. We recommend a linear wattage of 20 W/m for the de-icing cables.

Frost protection of pipesMany homeowners and other users of piping have many troubles in the winter due to freezing pipes. This especially applies to pipes for water piping, but other liquids used in industrial technologies can also freeze or solidify. During long spells of below-freezing temperatures, even very well-insulated piping can freeze. Supplementary heating is a reliable preventive solution.

CONCRETE CURING CABLE CIRCUITSA twin conductor screened cable with a 1×2 m cold lead with plug connection

PC / PC-S CABLES WITH CONSTANT LINEAR WATTAGE; PCC CIRCUITSCables with constant linear wattage provide a constant wattage per standard metre which enables their shortening and fi nal alterations at the place of installation. They are suitable for applications where higher outputs and thermal resistance are required – the heating of insulation in freezers, pipe heating, process heating, heating of compressor drainage pipes, etc.

The cable consists of two independently insulated supply conductors around which a very thin heating (resistance) wire is wound. It is connected to the supply conductors every 1 m of length – alternately to the phase and to the working conductor. In this way, ‘heating zones’ with a length of 1 m are created. To simplify – these are one-metre long resistance cables connected one after another in a coil. The whole structure is fi tted with a PC-S type silicon jacket, and also with a braided protective screen – termed armouring. The cable can be shortened to the required length; the wattage per 1 m remains the same, however. WARNING: the beginning and end of the cable will not give out heat; heating occurs from the fol-

lowing (preceding) heating zone! In an extreme situation, if the cable is shortened immediately after the connection of the resistance wire to the conduc-tor, this non-heating part can be up to 1 m long – we therefore recommend that a minimum of 1 m of extra cable is ordered.

PCC circuits are made from braided (armoured) cable with a constant linear wattage of 30 W/m – in principle, it is the same kind of cable as the PC-S type, but this is not sold per metre but only as fi nished circuits of set lengths, fi tted with a connecting lead (termed a cold lead) with a length of 1.5 m. Thanks to the silicon jacket and the thermal resistance, they are ideal for the protection of insulation for refrigeration equipment and freezers.

heating fi lmECOFILM®

Ecofi lm heating fi lms use state of the art technology and are primarily used for heating large surfaces. These heating systems are composed of laminated polyester fi lms with a graphite coat-ing, supply leads, and accessories. We offer ECOFILM fi lms in 3 versions: underfl oor heating fi lms (“F”), ceiling fi lms (“C”) and mirror heating fi lms.

The F fi lm is installed directly beneath a fl oating fl oor. Due to its ultra thin profi le (max 0,4 mm thick) the original construction height of the fl oating fl oor is hardly affected. This silent, unobtrusive and dry-laid underfoot heating system is highly reliable and has a long life span. We provide a 10-year warranty for ECOFILM heating fi lms, however their operational life can be longer (30–50 years). The product has been tested according to European standards.

ECOFILM setThe do-it-yourself kit for underfl oor heating may be installed eas-ily, quickly by following the relevant instructions. No professional installation company required. The fi nal electrical connection must be carried out by a qualifi ed electrician. As the Ecofi lm set comes complete for installation, no accessories are needed. We recommend 60 W/m2 for a fl oating wooden fl oor and 80 W/m2 for a fl oating laminated fl oor.

Gentle and safe heating for your comfortHeating fi lm makes an ideal fl oor heating system for laminated or wooden fl oating fl oors. The technical parameters of the heating fi lm ensure that the materials’ temperature resistance values are observed. Health safety standards are also maintained too as the maximum fl oor surface temperature is thermostatically limited to 27 °C. Traditional heaters which utilise a liquid to transfer the heat, operate at for example, signifi cantly higher temperature sand results in a greater fl uctuation in air humidity and undesirable ef-fects on wooden and laminated fl oors. It is hardly surprising that this sophisticated system has been used to safely and comfortably heat in excess of 2,5 million m2 of fl oors throughout Europe and has been warmly endorsed by such leading fl oor manufacturers as PERGO, SCANDIFLOOR, ALLOC, KÄHRS and JUNCKERS.

ECOFILM F – underfl oor heating fi lm

Flexible Ecofi lm heating fi lm is the ideal solution for economical electric underfl oor heating for laminated and wooden fl oating fl oors. The product is ultrathin, yet robust, and is a dry-laid system that is easy to install.

Easy, precise and fast installationThe heating fi lm is produced in rolls 600 mm wide (550 mm heating surface, two 25 mm non-heating edges) and 1 000 mm wide (970 mm heating surface, two 15 mm non-heating edges). Thanks to its special material composition, the heating fi lm may be cut every 10 mm to obtain exactly the required length of strips. The strips are laid side-by-side across the entire heating surface and are interconnected in parallel using cables with connectors. ECOFILM F heating components must neither overlap nor cross one another. This method of laying the fi lm saves time and especially reduces labor costs. Installers will appreciate that the fl oating or wooden fl oor may be laid immediately after the heating fi lm is installed and connected.

ECOFILM C heating fi lms provide an ideal ceiling heating system with balanced heat distribution throughout the room (without temperature gradients). Control of the ECOFILM C’S temperature I achieved by the use of an electronic thermostat which controls the room temperature. As it is a radiant heating system, the same comfort level as achieved by convection heating may be obtained at lower temperatures. Generally, reducing the temperature by 1 °C lowers total heating costs by 6 %.

CERAMIC HEATING BULBS

Ceramic heating bulbs – heating bulbs (lamps) function on the principle of infra-red radiation – they imitate the sun’s heat radiation and thus create conditions close to those in the natural environment. Heating lamps have a standard screw base which fi ts normal plastic bulb holders; however, due to the higher operating temperatures involved, we defi nitely recommend using ceramic bulb holders. The range, intensity and direction of the heat current can be increased using an aluminium refl ector. Heating bulbs can be used to create different temperature zones within a terrarium.

CONTROLLERS FOR GUTTERING AND OUTSIDE SURFACE HEATING

Eberle EM 524 89 (one-zone)

Regulator for the heating of eaves troughs, downpipes and outdoor surfaces – pavements and drives. In contrast with a manual or thermostatic controller it enables the achievement of operational cost savings of up to 80 %. Functions: setting of temperature and humidity, operating hours counter, alarm output, delayed switch-ing off, current temperature indicator. Placement on a DIN strip (8 modules), CZ menu. The presence of humid-ity (water, snow or ice) and the outdoor temperature are monitored with the help of external sensors which need to be ordered separately – for eaves troughs or free areas, depending on the application. IP 20.

4600015

Eberle EM 524 90 (two-zone)

A two-zone regulator for the heating of eaves troughs, downpipes and outdoor surfaces. The parameters and functions are the same as for the EM 524 89. However, the regulator enables independent monitoring and control of two applications simultaneously. Basically, these are two EM 524 89 regulators in one. Both zones require the connection of their own set of sensors – for eaves troughs or free areas, depending on the applica-tion – and these need to be ordered separately. IP 20.

REGULATORS TO CONTROL ATTENUATION AND TIME PROGRAMMABLE SWITCHES

FLASH Programmer 2 SED

The regulator uses a pilot wire for switching between comfort and attenuation temperatures. There is the option to divide a building into two zones and set individual weekly programmes for each of them. A week is divided into 7 days; each day can be allocated one of three pre-set programmes or an individual programme can be created (different for each day). In the case of individual programming, a day is divided into 30-minute inter-vals. There is the option of “holiday” operation – a temperature above freezing point (+7 °C) is maintained for a period of 1 to 99 days, followed by a return to the programme mode. Outputs: sinusoid 230 V / 50 Hz, positive and negative half-wave, the potential of a neutral conductor for all types of convectors and thermo-stats. Dimensions 83×70×17 mm, programme back-up 12 hours, IP 30 coverage. Placement on KU 68.

ATLANTIC electric water heater

Local heating not only provides you extra comfort, it also conserves electricity and water. Since these heaters are quite small, you can easily build one into a kitchen counter or the cabinet under the sink. Your kitchen’s aesthetics can thereby be preserved.

Principal characteristics and advantagesLow-volume units heat water very close to the place where it is to be used. This eliminates the large losses typical of central hot water sources, where pipes leading from the central boiler sap the water’s heat as they pass through walls.
