End dimensioning and

fit-up of deep-water

oil and gas pipes to

reduce project risk

• UK business

• Supplier of equipment and services

for pipe end measurement

• Global oil and gas specialists

• Delivering innovative solutions

for process improvement

• Winner of the Queen’s Awards

for Enterprise: Innovation

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

An introduction

Innovation

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Innovation is key for the

oil and gas sector to thrive

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Energy demand set to

rise by 40% in next 20 years

Need to meet the challenges

and uncertainties of today

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

The challenges and uncertainties of today

are new ones that are only likely to get

bigger. However, I believe we can meet

them with a blend of new technologies,

new partnerships, and new ideas.

Bob Dudley, BP Chief Executive

Reducing project

risk and cost

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

• No two pipes will fit together perfectly

• Our role is to minimise HiLo

and maximise efficiency to

reduce project risk and cost

• To meet and exceed project

specification requirements best

fit-up of pipe is crucial

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Reducing project risk and cost

SmartFitTM

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

• Innovative software

• Full pipe end analysis to establish best rotation

• Select the optimum sequence for fit-up if necessary

• Meet onshore and offshore challenges

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Deepwater pipeline

installation

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

• One of the biggest

engineering challenges

• Pipe end specification

requirements getting tighter

• Best fit-up of pipe crucial

to project success

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Deepwater pipeline installation

Case studies

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

• Challenging environment

• HiLo requirement of 1.0mm or less

• Weld seam requirement of within

+/- 45 degrees of TDC

• Longitudinal weld seams offset to

at least 100mm

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Gorgon Upstream Jansz Scarp Crossing

• Project specified HiLo of 1.0mm

• Long seam welds in upper quadrant

of pipes had to be within

+/-45 degrees of the vertical

• Successive long seams to be rotated

so not less than 30 degrees

from previous weld seam

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Barzan Gas Project

• Weld rate was 15 per day

prior to OMS involvement

• Weld rate increased to 40-45

per day (300%) after OMS

measurement and fit-up

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Woodside Greater Western Flank

The weld rate did indeed

increase after SmartFit began –

many thanks to you and your

team for working with us on this

challenging project.

Construction Manager, Technip

• Challenging environment –

arctic conditions

• Installation of a 20”

water injection line

• 1,978 joints of 20” x 33mm

WT linepipe and 21 joints of

20” x 36.3mm WT linepipe

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Sakhalin-1 Arkutun-Dagi

OMS did an outstanding

job for us on the Sakhalin project.

Without doubt, we would not

have managed to complete

and lay the pipe water injection

line without the valuable

contribution and expertise

of OMS engineers.

Robert McLean, McDermott

Efficiency and process

improvement

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

• We must champion efficiency

and process improvement

• Need to achieve the highest levels

of operational efficiency

• Acknowledge that we must

continue to move forward at pace

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

Recruitment

AOG Conference | 12 March 2015

• An ageing workforce presents us with challenges

• Up to 60% of engineers will reach retirement age in next five years

• Attract the next generation of engineers to ensure future success

• Work together to embrace improvement and change
