SDG 7 to 2030 requires 220 000 mini-grids and $ 230
Billion of investments (ESMAP, World Bank):
Cost of solar minigrids is decreasing
(due to cost reduction of PV & Batteries…)
…more and more competitive with
centralized grids costs…
But utility tariffs are strongly subsidized
Innovation is still needed

Increasing access to vulnerable areas: Risk management in the electrification interventions.
Greenlight Planet is a for-profit social business that
designs, distributes, and finances solar home
energy, with an under-served population in mind:
the 1.3 billion global consumers for whom the old-
fashioned electrical grid is unavailable or too
expensive.
Since selling our first Sun King™ solar-powered lamp
in 2009, the company has become a global leader in
the off-grid solar industry, serving over 30 million
users in more than 40 countries.
Greenlight Planet's mission is to power thelives of under-served consumers.
Solar lamps and solar home systems (SHS) are increasingly seen as a
route to electrification in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
Much of the population they serve is vulnerable to
The resilience of the energy services provided by solar lamps and SHS
is partly determined by their durability and portability, and partly by
diversity in their supply chains.
Like water, food, health, education and housing, access to energy is
a vital human need. Energy allows us to heat and light our homes, to
produce and preserve food or medicines, to travel, to guarantee our
safety and to generate income.
Solar lamps and solar home systems (SHS) are increasingly seen as a
route to electrification in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.

ic • Lack of reliable financial records
resulting in higher risk for PayG
companies.
• Heavy reliance on rain fed farming
reducing income potential and loan
payment ability.
• Low customer awareness in target
markets keeping investors out.
• Mismatching of technical specifications
with customer needs.
• High risk profiles lead to higher
interest rates and pricing.
• Cost of sale pushed up by distribution
cost, including poor roads & taxes.
Proposed Interventions
• Collaboration between financial institutions and SHS PayG companies to provide funding for
customers.
• Collaboration between MNOs and SHS PayG companies in facilitating credit scoring via mobile money
and telephone usage to mitigate risk.
• Collaboration with MNOs and mobile money service providers to facilitate electronic payments and
last mile distribution.
• Industry stakeholders, Government and Development agencies participation in supply chain. Some of
the areas that could be targeted;
1. Tax incentives to incentivize investments & reduce costs & prices.
2. Providing access to financing & incentives for last mile distributors.
• Joint consumer education on benefits of solar lighting.
• Stakeholder engagement by development agencies helping governments in development of
electrification programs to better understand specifications and match them to customer needs.
