Course Description For YAAdolescent literature readers the narratives they read often offer glimpses into a diversity of

life experiences that they otherwise may never consider or gain exposure to Because of the circumstances life hands

them the characters in these texts have no choice but to in the words of childrenrsquos literature scholar Roberta Trites

ldquodisturb the universerdquo which we will consider in relation to the diversity of characters presented Throughout the semester

each text will be paired with assigned scholarly articles that discuss various concepts present within the readings Along

with supplementing the text itself these articles demonstrate the ways in which YAAdolescent literature is discussed

within academic settings and ultimately become models for the ways students in the course should construct their own

discussions about the assigned text Each text we examine in this course features characters that experience life in

specifically diverse ways and often include challenging issues including disability rape suicide racism homophobia life

after death etc Because of the nature of these texts we will begin the course with a trigger warning discussion and

construct safe space rules for how to approach these texts as a class Although the target audience for these texts include

younger readers this is not a class about teaching adolescent literature in the middle school or high school classroom

Course Policies

GradingReturn Policy My policy is generally to return major grades at least two weeks after the assignment has been

submitted On rare occasions there may be an exception to this return policy but I will alert you immediately if

such an occasion occurs If you have not received an assignment by the two-week deadline please contact me I

want you to know how you are doing in the class at all times A quick email or conversation with me can easily

clarify most situations so please donrsquot hesitate to contact me with your concerns

Revisions Because this is a course that moves very quickly opportunities to revise essays that have already been

graded will be extremely rare I highly recommend giving yourself enough time to revise your own work before submitting

and if possible taking advantage of the Writing Center tutors who can also assist you in your compositions

Those who do not turn in Writing Assignments on time or who fail due to plagiarism will not be allowed to

revise- no exceptions

Printed Work All work will be typed and printed for this class Handwritten work with an exception of assignments

completed during class time will NOT be accepted Electronic assignments will only be accepted if the student has

previously discussed the issue with the instructor and received permission Otherwise all work will be printed and turned

in on time

Missing class because a paper that you have not completed is due is a very unwise choice EVERY class

we have will be very important- if you didnrsquot do the work missing a class day will only make it more difficult

to succeed

Papers turned in after class has started (after the first 10 minutes of class) will be docked 20 points NO

EXCEPTIONS

Late Work Late work will only be accepted if you have contacted the instructor at least 24 hours in advance about the

issue and she chooses to grant you an extension Depending on the situation the paper will be docked 15 points for

lateness If your reason legitimately falls under her Excused Absences Policy and you contact her 24 hours in advance

you may not lose points Student who do NOT contact the instructor and receive an extension will NOT be able to turn

their essays in late They will receive a zero

If at any point you email me because something has occurred where you will be unable to turn your assignment in as

directed it would be wise to attach the assignment to the email and send it before or BY the time it is due I may or may

not accept it but I will definitely NOT accept it if you fail to give me a time stamp showing that it was completed by the

time it is due

NO EXCEPTIONS

o Having to work late having trouble coming up with something to write computer problems

document loss internet issues other classes assignment loads etc DO NOT count as legitimate

reasons for an extension Computers crash life happens and papers will still need to be

turned in when they are due

I recommend using dropbox or other outside methods of saving documents such as emailing them to

yourself because computers do crash and flash drives do get eaten by your dog Which is unfortunate but

still not an excuse

Extra Credit Instructor may offer extra credit opportunities periodically throughout the semester As these opportunities

present themselves she will give students ample time to complete and submit these Any extra credit opportunity will be

available for all students (there will not be special cases made for individual students) Students are encouraged to

suggest possible extra credit options offer a compelling and logical argument as a class and instructor will consider

including it in the schedule Extra credit options will end at the end of Unit Four Students will not be granted extra credit

as a means to pass the class Extra credit is not the answer for students on the verge of failingmdashstudents are expected to

keep up with their work and grades throughout the entire semester

MLA Format Expected for All Work We will discuss MLA format in some detail the first week or so of class Afterward I expect you to have a basic knowledge of MLA formatting Later in the semester we will spend some time discussing citation If you forget our initial MLA talk I strongly suggest you access a reliable reference (Purdue OWL MLA is a great place) YouTube andor the Collin College Writing Center for help ldquoI did not knowrdquo is not a valid excuse The basics One-inch margins 12 point font (Times New Roman Arial Calibri and Garamond are acceptable) double-spacing at 0 point (you will usually need to change this since most Word programs default to 8 or 10 point spacing) name and page number in header top right informational header on first page only top left in-text citations when appropriate title on first page works cited page Nothing underlined Nothing in bold No other font sizes No other fonts but the ones suggested above (especially comic sans) No title pages No extra spacing afterbefore paragraphs or sentences

COMMUNICATION AND SUPPORT

In class Interaction Requirements Students WILL be respectful to one another the instructor and the various cultures

and ideologies brought up and discussed during class discussion Students for this course are in a collegiate

environment and will be treated as such Various issues will be discussed throughout the semester and students will

be expected to approach them in academic and mature ways At the beginning of the semester we will as a class

compose the parameters that everyone agrees classifies our class as a ldquosafe spacerdquo and all students will be

expected to comply While there are no inherently ldquowrongrdquo ideas there are inappropriate immature and

disrespectful ways to discuss those ideas Students who do so will be asked to leave and receive an absent for the

day Physical verbal online and overall ideological bullying will NEVER be acceptable in this class

Netiquette Expectations Students may interact in public online discussions and will maintain audience and contextual

awareness All student will be expected to be respectful and appropriate both in class and online Students will also be

expected to interact with instructor via email Students will be expected to maintain professionalism and construct emails

online forum Netiquette httpwwwalbioncomnetiquettecoreruleshtml

Rather our focus will be on reading and interpreting adolescent literature from a college level critical analysis literary

point of view

Netiquette Expectations Students may interact in public online discussions and will maintain audience and contextual

awareness All student will be expected to be respectful and appropriate both in class and online Students will also be

expected to interact with instructor via email Students will be expected to maintain professionalism and construct emails

that follow the emailing guidelines supplied by the instructor (see Email Policies under instructorrsquos policies) Responses to

emails should be expected within 48 hours during weekdays emails will rarely receive responses on weekends

Students should also consult the Rules of Netiquette for more information regarding how to interact with students in an

online forum Netiquette httpwwwalbioncomnetiquettecoreruleshtml

Nondiscrimination notice AampM ndash Commerce will comply in the classroom and in online courses with all federal and

state laws prohibiting discrimination and related retaliation on the basis of race color religion sex national origin

disability age genetic information or veteran status Further an environment free from discrimination on the basis

of sexual orientation gender identity or gender expression will be maintained

Student Conduct

All students enrolled at the University shall follow the tenets of common decency and acceptable behavior conducive to a

positive learning environment (See Code of Student Conduct from Student Guide Handbook) Student Guidebook

email and her address is kcooper7leomailtamucedu Also each instructor in the department of literature and

Netiquette Expectations Students may interact in public online discussions and will maintain audience and contextual

awareness All student will be expected to be respectful and appropriate both in class and online Students will also be

expected to interact with instructor via email Students will be expected to maintain professionalism and construct emails

that follow the emailing guidelines supplied by the instructor (see Email Policies under instructorrsquos policies) Responses to

emails should be expected within 48 hours during weekdays emails will rarely receive responses on weekends

Interaction with Instructor Statement

Please contact you instructor with any questions you may have Your instructorrsquos communication preference is

email and her address is kcooper7leomailtamucedu Also each instructor in the department of literature and

languages is required to keep at least three office hours per course per week

Grievance Procedure

Students who have concerns regarding their courses should first address those concerns with the assigned

instructor in order to reach a resolution Students who are unsatisfied with the outcome of that conversation or have

not been able to meet individually with their instructor whether in-person by email by telephone or by another

communication medium should then schedule an appointment with the Literature and Languages Department

Head Dr Hunter Hayes by completing a student grievance form available on the program website

On University-Sanctioned Activities

To accommodate students who participate in university-sanctioned activities the First-Year Composition Program

Netiquette Expectations Students may interact in public online discussions and will maintain audience and contextual

awareness All student will be expected to be respectful and appropriate both in class and online Students will also be

expected to interact with instructor via email Students will be expected to maintain professionalism and construct emails

that follow the emailing guidelines supplied by the instructor (see Email Policies under instructorrsquos policies) Responses to

emails should be expected within 48 hours during weekdays emails will rarely receive responses on weekends

All students enrolled at the University shall follow the tenets of common decency and acceptable behavior conducive to a

positive learning environment (See Code of Student Conduct from Student Guide Handbook) Student Guidebook

httpwwwtamuceduadmissionsregistrardocumentsstudentGuidebookpdf

Where applicable students should also consult University Procedure 139999R005 (ldquoStudent Appeal of Instructor

If you ever have any questions about a particular use of a source always ask your instructor They want you to

advantage of this supportmdashto look innocent in addition to being innocent when it comes to charges of plagiarism

Students guilty of academic dishonesty of plagiarism on any assignment can expect to fail the assignment in

not be allowed to use it in class again

Cell Phones

Place your cell phone on vibratesilent and have it on your desk if you are going to have it on you If you get a call or

actively using your phone during class for anything that is clearly unrelated to class I will ask you to leave and you

will be counted absent No questions asked If itrsquos an emergency you will step out but otherwise I expect you to just

leave the phone alone DO NOT ninja text I can see you texting under the desk and in your purse and itrsquos

disrespectful THAT will get you kicked out of class

Food

Feel free to bring snacks and drinks to class If you make a mess you clean it up Donrsquot bring a four course meal or

a giant onion but keep it discreet and yoursquoll be fine Itrsquos easy to forget to drink water and eat snacks and meals

throughout the day when you have so much going on- so you are more than welcome to do that during this class if

you can do so quietly and discreetly

On University-Sanctioned Activities

To accommodate students who participate in university-sanctioned activities the First-Year Composition Program

typically offers sections of this course at various times of the day and week However because this is a summer

course options are limited If you think that this course may conflict with a university-sanctioned activity in which

you are involved--athletics etc--please see your instructor after class on the first day- Remember even students

who miss up to 4 classes for excused reasons wonrsquot be able to pass the course

In class Interaction Requirements Students WILL be respectful to one another the instructor and the various cultures

and ideologies brought up and discussed during class discussion Students for this course are in a collegiate

compose the parameters that everyone agrees classifies our class as a ldquosafe spacerdquo and all students will be

expected to comply While there are no inherently ldquowrongrdquo ideas there are inappropriate immature and

disrespectful ways to discuss those ideas Students who do so will be asked to leave and receive an absent for the

day Physical verbal online and overall ideological bullying will NEVER be acceptable in this class

Netiquette Expectations Students may interact in public online discussions and will maintain audience and contextual

awareness All student will be expected to be respectful and appropriate both in class and online Students will also be

all of their scholastic work For more details and the definition of academic dishonesty see the following procedures

Undergraduate Academic Dishonesty 139999R003

The official departmental policy ldquoInstructors in the Department of Literature and Languages do not tolerate plagiarism and

other forms of academic dishonestly Instructors uphold and support the highest academic standards and students

are expected to do likewise Penalties for students guilty of academic dishonesty include disciplinary

probation suspension and expulsion (Texas AampM University-Commerce Code of Student Conduct 5b [123])

If you ever have any questions about a particular use of a source always ask your instructor They want you to

avoid plagiarism too so they will help you do so whenever and wherever they can Do what you can to take

advantage of this supportmdashto look innocent in addition to being innocent when it comes to charges of plagiarism

Students guilty of academic dishonesty of plagiarism on any assignment can expect to fail the assignment in

question or the entire course depending on the nature of the incident

There will be absolutely no opportunities for revision if a paper has been plagiarized (even accidental plagiarism)

permission from the instructor PRIOR to using it during class To receive approval Student will type up a 300 word

proposal making a clear and logical argument for WHY they wishneed to use their device during class

If I get the impression that you are using the electronic for anything unrelated to class I will ask you to put it away

once If it happens a second time I will ask you to leave and you will receive an absence for that class day and will

not be allowed to use it in class again

To accommodate students who participate in university-sanctioned activities the First-Year Composition Program

typically offers sections of this course at various times of the day and week However because this is a summer

course options are limited If you think that this course may conflict with a university-sanctioned activity in which

you are involved--athletics etc--please see your instructor after class on the first day- Remember even students

who miss up to 4 classes for excused reasons wonrsquot be able to pass the course

letting the instructor know 24 hours in advance does NOT guarantee an excused absence This will be to the

instructorrsquos discretion

Tardies are considered entering after class has started or leaving before it is over It is the responsibility of the

tardy student to inform the instructor after class that she was present Otherwise she will be counted as absent

Students who miss up to 20 of the class (6 absences) will fail the course even if the absences are excused

For Unexcused Absences

Students with 4 absences will drop one letter grade

Students with 6 absences will fail the course

2 Tardies equal 1 absence

For tardies excused or unexcused absences

It is 100 the studentrsquos responsibility to ask peers for any material assignments lectures etc missed DO NOT

email me asking if you missed anything- because you did and I will not back track for you It is your

responsibility

IF you have an excused absence your work will STILL BE DUE ON TIME You need to email your work to me by

the class time it is due and bring me the printed copy by the next class day

Note Jail time court appearances scheduled doctorrsquos appointments and flat tires are not considered an excused

absence Life has many unexpected eventsmdashthis is why you receive four lsquofreersquo absences before your grade is

affected Use them wisely

are expected to do likewise Penalties for students guilty of academic dishonesty include disciplinary

probation suspension and expulsion (Texas AampM University-Commerce Code of Student Conduct 5b [123])

The student will fail the assignment If the student plagiarizes a second time they will fail the course No exceptions

Electronics

Students will only be allowed to use laptops netbooks iPads Kindles etc during class time IF they receive

permission from the instructor PRIOR to using it during class To receive approval Student will type up a 300 word

proposal making a clear and logical argument for WHY they wishneed to use their device during class

If I get the impression that you are using the electronic for anything unrelated to class I will ask you to put it away

once If it happens a second time I will ask you to leave and you will receive an absence for that class day and will

not be allowed to use it in class again

Cell Phones

Place your cell phone on vibratesilent and have it on your desk if you are going to have it on you If you get a call or

text that is an emergency and you need to answer then step out to take care of it Otherwise ignore it If you are

actively using your phone during class for anything that is clearly unrelated to class I will ask you to leave and you

will be counted absent No questions asked If itrsquos an emergency you will step out but otherwise I expect you to just

leave the phone alone DO NOT ninja text I can see you texting under the desk and in your purse and itrsquos

disrespectful THAT will get you kicked out of class

Netiquette Expectations Students may interact in public online discussions and will maintain audience and contextual

awareness All student will be expected to be respectful and appropriate both in class and online Students will also be

expected to interact with instructor via email Students will be expected to maintain professionalism and construct emails

that follow the emailing guidelines supplied by the instructor (see Email Policies under instructorrsquos policies) Responses to

emails should be expected within 48 hours during weekdays emails will rarely receive responses on weekends

Head Dr Hunter Hayes by completing a student grievance form available on the program website

letting the instructor know 24 hours in advance does NOT guarantee an excused absence This will be to the
