Hello, my name is Stephanie Engel, assistant principal for Smith Middle School. This presentation has been set up as communication for parents who could not attend our first PTA meeting for 2012, in the hopes to clearly answer any questions about our recent years FCAT scores.

As the Florida Department of Education states, The mission of the Bureau of Family and Community Outreach is to empower families and communities with resources and information needed to promote a high quality education for their children. The Bureau reaches out to serve Florida's diverse families and communities in a number of ways including family engagement;. mentoring/student assistance. (FLDOE)2

In 2011, Smith Middle School had its highest 6th grade reading scores in the past 5 years, with a mean, or average score of 60.6% proficiency, with students scoring a level of 3.5 or above. For the past 5 years, Smith Middle School was only slightly below the district mean of 62.8% for reading, where students scored a level of 3.5 or above. Within the last 5 years, 7th grade reading scores have shown a slight but steady improvement, with only a minor drop in 2011, creating an average of 55.4% proficiency. Compared to results from the district for the 2007 through 2011 time frame, Smith Middle School is slightly behind with a variation of roughly 4%, with the districts average being 59.4% proficiency. The last 5 years for 8th grade reading, show an increase in scores until 2011, where a drop is seen. The average score for this date range is 42.6% proficiency. Compared to the district scoring for the period of 2007 through 2011, eight grade reading at Smith Middle school ranked more than 10% lower than other schools scoring a level of 3.5 or above, where other schools in the district averaged 55.4% proficiency at scoring a level of 3.5 or above.Reading

The average 6th grade math score is 63% proficiency for students scoring a level of 3.5 or above. The range itself was a total difference of 10% proficiency. At the district level, the mean for this time frame was 60.4% proficiency. The range for the district was also a total difference of 10%. This is not a large difference, and shows favor of the scores for Smith Middle School. Scores for 7th grade math show an increased improvement at the Smith Middle School level with an average score of 49.8% proficiency. The scores range from 34% in 2007 to 63% in 2011, an increase of over 20%. At the district level, math scores of a level of 3.5 or above were an average of 53.8% proficiency. For Smith Middle School 8th grade scores show a significant drop between 2010 and 2011. However, this is still an increase of 27% from 2007. This being said, the total average score for the 5-year range was still only at 38% proficiency, compared to the district level of 47.6% proficiency.

So what are we doing, as a school, to help increase scores? This year, teachers will begin meeting weekly with students to have individual conferences where they will track scores, set goals, and make individual recommendations based on test scores. For students falling below the level of 3.5, teachers will send home weekly writing prompts, and math and reading extensions, which will be based on individual benchmarks/strands. A word wall will be required in every classroom, and students will have informational texts and other resources available to them throughout the year. This does not mean that parents are expected to pick up the slack on a larger than normal load of homework. Student work will be individualized, what we refer to as differentiated, per each childs needs. In addition, morning and evening tutoring will be offered, as needed.
