P aul wrote to the people in Philippi, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the

interests of others.”

When I read that verse, it really peaked my interest in what it could mean. Read it again…slowly…“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

One of my roles as Pastor is to be a good listener. That may not sound like much, and I know there are times when I could listen better, but listening well is important. Listening can also wear you down mentally if you are not careful. It’s why personal sabbatical is so important; time to read, pray, sit and be alone. To be as engaged as I should, I need to keep myself properly rested, and, filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit. In fact, we should all keep ourselves as rested as we can and as filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit as is humanly possible.

As I considered how important listening is, I decided that I would take one day and simply listen to people. The following is a recap from a single day from my life just listening…

I listened as people shared simple things taking place in their lives; things like what year they got married, what errands they had to run, the movie they would watch on $5 bargain day, and what they were planning to cook for dinner that night.

Other things I heard were heard with a larger ear as their thoughts were filled with passion; someone shared over lunch that they had received a bonus from work for a job well done; there was an argument between a mother and a son that had caused a deep rift; a homeless person came by the office looking for assistance; one person said she was about to enter her final year at NC Wesleyan; majoring in Psychology, she hoped to enter grad school next year; a family came from Washington (the original one) and was getting their son’s hair cut before school started the next day; the barber spoke of how they were financially helping their sister with much needed back to school supplies for

three children; there was pain a spouse was sharing that associated with aging; and another spouse shared the pains of loneliness associated with dying. THAT was one day spent listening.

I was blown away as I stopped and realized just how much listening I had done in the course of a single day. Multiply that times 7 and you begin to sense how important our jobs as good listeners can be for others. “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

I challenge you to spend a day and listen. At the close of your day, stop and think about how much you hear, and then consider how important it is to offer yourself, ears and all, to the people you come in contact with. You may never know how important listening is, but the person(s) doing all the talking do.

Thank You To My EUMC Family,

Thank you all so much for your support of my upcoming mission trip to India. I really enjoyed the fellowship at the Spaghetti lunch. I know I do not have enough words of gratitude. I am truly humbled by your generosity. I could not go do what God has called me to do without all of your love, prayers and support. I can’t wait to see how God is going to change lives. I look forward to sharing with you stories of restoration and transformation. Please continue to pray for me as I go to be the hands and feet of Jesus. I love you all! Thank you so much for the blessing you are in my life.

Thank You

Dear Mrs. Poplin,

Some months ago you delivered a prayer shawl to me at Autumn Care in Nashville. I appreciate it so very much. Since then you delivered some chemo caps to me for my sister who was fighting cancer. She and I appreciated them so much. Last week she was declared cancer free! We are still praising God!

Now I have another request for a niece. She was in Duke last year for some months and is now fighting liver failure. She is #1 on the liver transplant list. Her name is Susan Horrell. She lives alone in Roanoke Rapids. I would like for her to have a prayer shawl. She and I will be forever grateful.

My kindness and personal regards.

Love and prayers, Peggy Edwards

Women of The Way

During the summer the Women of the Way Circle usually doesn’t meet. However, it was decided that we shouldn’t neglect our commitment to The Lighthouse for paper goods. So ten of us got together at Pitstop Shoppe to eat yogurt, have fellowship, and collect our paper products. Needless to say, we had a great time catching up on everyone’s summer activities and brought lots of paper goods to help these women at The Lighthouse. Normal circle meetings resume in September. We invite any women in the church to join us at 10:00 a.m. on the 3rd Tuesday in the Fellowship Hall. If you would like more information on our circle before then, please contact Jeannie Gibbs (443-4930) or Sharon Roth (451-7936).

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Dear Prayer Shawl Ministry Friends,

On behalf of James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at Vidant Medical Center (Greenville), I would like to thank you for the beautiful fleece blankets and chemo caps. I just love the various child-friendly patterns you selected. I know they will be a big hit with the children and teens. Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with our patients.

Please visit our Facebook page (see below) to view a post about your donation.

Sincerely, Susan Sugg

Thanking Englewood United Methodist Church in Rocky Mount and their

Prayer Shawl Ministry for their donation of 21 beautiful fleece blankets and 2 chemo caps. These

blankets are made in different sizes and of fun,

festive patterns that we know patients of all ages will find comforting. We appreciate their attention

to detail & thoughtfulness!

Thank You!

Dear Members of EUMC Prayer Shawl / Blanket Ministry,

I love the beautiful prayer shawl that was given to me during my total knee replacement. I loved the colors-it looks like the calm and peacefulness of the ocean. I cannot knit but I quilt and crochet, so I was very pleased to have a knitted shawl. My friend Jeannie Gibbs gave it to me.

Thank you, Cecile Renn

The deadline for receiving

information to be included

in the OCTOBER Newsletter

is September 20th!

Family Fall Fun Day

Come celebrate the fall season with us!

On Saturday, October 26th from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., the Children’s Ministry Team will host a Family Fall Fun Day at Englewood UMC. We’ll have an interactive devotion for the children, along with games and activities for the whole family. This is one fun day you won’t want to miss, so grab your kids and grandkids and join us for an old-fashioned good time!

Mark your calendars now, and stay tuned for more information next month.

EUMC Workdays at the MERCI Center

In August, we worked at the MERCI Center on both the 1st and 2nd Saturdays of the month. Two EUMC members worked with a Boy Scout Troop and Princeton Bridge Church Middle School children on the 1st Saturday. On the 2nd Saturday, four EUMC members worked alongside members from Bethel UMC from Snow Camp. This 2nd group had a reward as the Bethel group brought a grill and fed us!!! See what you miss when you don’t go to MERCI!! Thanks to

everyone who donated the items requested for MERCI. We used them all and still need more. The tub remains in the area adjacent to the narthex so if you can provide more hand towels, one-subject notebooks, paper, and/or blunt-tipped scissors, that would be fantastic. The next trip will be Saturday, September 7th. We will be leaving the church at 8:00 a.m. and plan to stay in Goldsboro until at least 1:00 p.m. If you would like to join the group going, please contact Sharon Roth at 451-7936 or [email protected]. You will meet a lot of great people while being the hands of Christ to help others. We want this center to be prepared and ready to help when disasters strike, as well as to continue to support the missions that are healing and bringing hope and God’s love to His people in need.

COMPASSION CAFÉ

On Wednesday, July 24th, our youth served the meal at Compassion Café. The Menu was Ham and Turkey Sandwiches, Chips and Dessert. 51 Guests were served.

The next time EUMC will host Compassion Café will be on October 23rd and the UMW and UMM will serve as co-hosts.

“We’ve Come A Long Way”

Our Twin County Autism Family Support Group-Rocky Mount is also our name AND our Facebook page name. We can also be found on EUMC website AND we can also be found at our church on the fourth Friday of each month (with the exceptions of November and December) 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Each meeting serves dinner and provides childcare at no cost to families. Volunteers serve and care for children-NO, all of our children are not special needs children but are also siblings of families attending.

We are reaching out to our wider area and serving as many families as God sends. We have no limits so we need more help.

Won’t you choose to help us as we expand? We need: greeters, servers, childcare helpers, and smiling faces! Call Barbara Batts, 252-450-5000 to say, “Yes”!

Lydia’s Sisters Circle Casserole Sale

Lydia’s Sisters Circle will have their delicious frozen casseroles for sale again this year. A circle member will be in the church lobby on the following Sundays: September 15th, September 22nd, and September 29th at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to take orders.

Casseroles will be available for pick up on Sunday, October 6th in the church kitchen at 11:00 a.m. Only the 8x8 casseroles will be available and will cost $10. If you desire, the 8x8 size will be split into two smaller serving containers for the same price of $10.

ORGAN AND PIANO CONCERT

W e at EUMC know what awesome talent Sharon Muller and Melissa Barbour have because they demonstrate it every Sunday at church. But on Sunday, August 18th, we and the Rocky Mount

community were blessed with the opportunity to listen to this talent for an hour. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon with over 95 people in attendance! After the concert, we had the opportunity to fellowship with Sharon and Melissa and enjoy light refreshments. From the Outreach Committee and all in attendance...Thank you, Sharon and Melissa for giving of your time to provide us with such wonderful music. It was so great to listen to you both play in concert form with sixteen selections of music. Thanks also to Evelyn Cline and Lana VanderLinden, Outreach Committee members, for coordinating this event. Also, a special thank you to Savanna Becker and Rod Buckner for recording the concert and making CDs.

FEAST

FEAST (Fellowship Eat And Study Together) is a weekly small group program that will begin the week of September 15th and extend for 10 weeks. FEAST Families are small groups that will meet weekly for fellowship and devotion time, in the hope of strengthening our community bonds. Each group will decide when and where they meet each week based on their schedules. You may sign up according to your preferences using the sign-up sheet in your church bulletin.

Twice during these 10 weeks (October 16th and November 20th), the whole church is invited to gather for dinner and worship in the Fellowship Hall, themed along with our weekly FEAST devotions. Our theme for this Fall session is “A Fruit in Season”, and we will be discussing how to cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in our daily living. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to grow in our faith, both individually and as a community.

AGAPE Christmas Boxes

On Sunday, September 1st, you will find 200 empty shoeboxes on the Chancel railing. Please pick up one or multiple ones to fill with items listed on the lid for the children in Armenia. Please DO NOT include batteries or perishable items. Place your $5 inside the box to cover cost of shipping and then secure the boxes with THREE (3) large

rubber bands. Please DO NOT tie with ribbons or bows, just rubber bands. Once filled with your gifts and love these shoeboxes become AGAPE Christmas boxes and they are to be returned on Sunday, September 29th for a blessing from Pastor Terry before they are taken to the MERCI Center. The empty shoeboxes will remain on the railing until all have been taken. So please try to take them ASAP so that the office staff won’t have to listen to the crying of the sad little boxes that were left behind. If you will not be in attendance on the 1st and want a specific age group for your shoeboxes, contact Sharon Roth and all the shoeboxes you wish will be set aside for you to pick up during that week. This program is a part of Project AGAPE which is a mission of the North Carolina United Methodists with Christians in Armenia. For many children, this shoebox will be the only gift they receive and it carries the priceless love of Christ to these children from YOU. If you are physically unable to go out and purchase shoebox items and have no one to do it for you, you can send a check to the church office for $30, by September 15th, to cover the cost of the gifts and the shipping. The Outreach Ministry Team will then fill the box for you. If you will be out of town, please plan ahead because we urge everyone who is physically able to have the personal joy of shopping yourself for these children. We pray that each man, woman and child at EUMC will participate in this wonderful shoebox program. Your gift to a child proclaims not only your love but Jesus’ AGAPE.

Englewood United Methodist Men

The Englewood United Methodist Men will meet Tuesday, September 10th at 6:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall. After our meal and

a short business session, we will make our way to Stonewall Manor for a tour of this landmark historic site. Built in 1830, Stonewall’s scale and sophisticated design make it one of the finest antebellum plantation houses remaining in North Carolina.

So come out and join us! Expand your knowledge of Nash County history! Lee Pullen and his crew will be preparing our meal which is very reasonably priced at $5.00 (free for first time visitors). Come a little early for fellowship time.

While you are marking your calendar for our September 10th meeting, please be reminded that we will meet again October 1st, the first Tuesday in October. The reason for the schedule change is the fellowship hall is being used as the voting site for the municipal election on October 8th.

GriefShare classes will begin on September 9th at 6:00 p.m. in Room 202/204 and will continue for 12 weeks. If you are interested, please call Jeannie Gibbs (443-4930) or Llewellyn Edmondson (443-7780). A sign-up sheet is also located in the church lobby.

FAITH CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES OF NASH COUNTY - SEPTEMBER NEEDS

Thank you for your faithfulness in continuing to support this mission project by donating food to

feed the hungry in Nash County. We are taking 2 to 2½ boxes of food to this agency now. While the physical location of this agency is in Nashville, the majority of their support is given to Rocky Mount residents.

Starting Sunday, September 1st, the "Meals of the Month" donation will be Canned Beef Stew, Canned Chicken and Dumplings, and Rice. There is a tub and two yellow boxes located in the area beneath the name tags in the church lobby, labeled "FCM MEALS OF THE MONTH".

Please donate these food items to help stock their food pantry throughout the month of September. This is another wonderful opportunity for this generous congregation to help others who can't help themselves.

EUMC FLOWER MINISTRY

When you place flowers in the sanctuary or narthex, if you would like to donate them to the Flower Ministry, please contact Dot Honeycutt at 937-4858 (during the month of September). They will be delivered to our sick and shut-ins on Monday.

On those Sundays when no one has signed up to place flowers in the sanctuary, the Flower Ministry Fund is used to place flowers in the sanctuary so that flowers will be available for the shut-ins that week. If you would like to make a contribution to this fund, please make your check payable to EUMC and mark Flower Ministry on the memo line.

We have an excellent Sunday School program at Englewood UMC, with a variety of classes that will meet the needs of every age group and interest. Below is a summary of each of our classes. We hope you’ll try them out and find a strong community where your faith can grow!

The Aldersgate Class

T he Aldersgate Class consists of an energetic and engaging group of adults who have witnessed almost

all the “ups and downs” that life has to offer. This class meets on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in Room 4. Each class includes a lesson, fellowship, and discussion of ways to connect our Bible study to our everyday lives. We are very eager to explore how our lives can be enriched through Biblical references and church literature. Our class follows the Adult Bible Study curriculum supplied by Cokesbury. This class is very active in the community in a variety of ways including making stockings for children and ringing bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas, giving memorials to remember the passing of members, donating books to the library, visiting care facilities, and taking flowers and food to families in times of need. Come join us for new ideas, fellowship, and fun!

The Koinonia Class

T he Koinonia Class is made up of adults with a joyful attitude who want to seek the heart of God together.

The focus of this class is on friendship, fellowship, and spiritual growth. This class meets on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in Room 202/204.

Our class enjoys small group studies that are discussion-based. We are currently doing a Bob Goff study called “Everybody Always”. We have also done studies by Ellsworth Kalas, JD Greear, Adam Hamilton and Kyle Idleman.

Our class members are active in all areas of the church. Our class also supports a variety of mission projects including adopting families at Christmas, supporting youth missions, providing meals for the international students at NC Wesleyan College, and more. We’d love for you to be part of our class!

The Seekers Class

T he Seekers is a Sunday School class at Englewood UMC that meets each Sunday morning at 8:45 a.m. in

Rooms 206/207 in our educational wing. This class is co-ed, and we extend an invitation to anyone and everyone to join us for Bible study and fellowship. We are presently examining various Scripture passages in an informal study we are calling, “Seeing Jesus”. Chet Rains is our regular teacher; however, we also hear, on occasion, from guest teachers/speakers on other topics related to our walk with Christ. We also believe in the value of table fellowship, and regular gatherings outside of class help strengthen the ties that bind us together. We hope we will see you soon!

The Wesleyan Friendship Class

T he Wesleyan Friendship Class is an Adult Sunday School class made up of people of a variety of ages

and backgrounds. This class meets on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in Room 201 and is taught by Peter Varney. We follow a Bible study curriculum called the Wired Word published by the Christian Education Department of the Churches of Christ. Each week we email a summary of the week’s topic to each member of the class, so everyone has an opportunity to review the material and prepare for discussion.

Each lesson begins with a summary of a current event which has been reported prominently in the news media during the preceding two or three weeks. After discussing the news report, we then review five or six verses taken from the Bible to see how the news fits into a biblical context. Exploring verses from Scripture in this way allows us to consider how God is at work in our world and in our everyday life experiences.

Children’s Sunday School

W e offer two classes for children during the Sunday School hour: one in the nursery for children Pre-K

and younger, and the other for children in Kindergarten - 5th Grade.

In the Nursery, children are cared for by friendly, nurturing workers who have a great deal of experience tending to young children. They can play with any of our large selection of toys, choose a book from our children’s library, and have a snack together. The nursery staff also provides an interactive lesson for the children. The Nursery is also available during our worship services for children Pre-K and younger.

The K-5th Grade Sunday School Class is using a Sunday School curriculum called Spark Classroom, which takes them on a journey through the Bible using Bible stories, arts and crafts, and active games. Together we discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today! All of our Sunday School teachers and helpers are devoted to helping our children grow in their faith and develop a close relationship with God and with one another.

Youth Sunday School

O ur Youth Sunday School class meets in Room 5 on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. We cover a range of topics,

including books of the Bible and issues relating to their lives as teenagers.

We have a rotation of teachers who are enthusiastic about leading these classes, as well as serving as excellent role models of Christian men and women for our young people.

All students 6th grade and older are invited to join us for fellowship and discussion each week!
