Sherbrooke,A TRUE

cOLLEGE TOWNSherbrooke ranks as Quebec’s sixth largest city

with a population of 157,000. In addition to being

bilingual, Sherbrooke is home to two universities

—one English speaking and the other French

speaking—and three colleges. The vast majority

of the student population comes from outside of

the city, making Sherbrooke a young, vibrant,

and vital city.

Moreover, the cost of living in Sherbrooke is very rea-

sonable and there are no traffic jams to speak of. The

area’s lakes, rivers, and mountains combine to make

Sherbrooke an outstanding place to live. Downtown

holds a great deal of attraction for students, with its

movie theatres, cafés, bars, and small clubs where

emerging groups perform, giving Sherbrooke its own

reputation in the music industry.

Reasons why Sherbrooke stands out from other towns in the country:

20% OF ITS POPULATION PURSUES POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION

60% OF ITS ECONOMY IS LINKED TO THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY

ITS HIGHLY ADVANTAGEOUS POSITION AS AN INTEGRATED STUDENT CITY IN A SELECT CLUB COMPRISING A SMALL NUMBER OF CITIES AROUND THE WORLD

ITS LEADERSHIP ROLE IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

UdeS andTHE WORLDUdeS’s reputation for vitality and innovation attracts students

from across the province and around the world. More than

85% of the University’s student population comes from outside

Sherbrooke, creating a warm atmosphere that lets new students

integrate into the community easier.

Internationalization at UdeS means:

3,700 international students and immigrants from 115 countries

530 exchange students through student mobility programs

441 international cooperative agreements with 66 countries

Cultural diversity reflected in faculty representation, since 23% of faculty members were born outside of Canada

Active partnerships with the Réseau Latinus (initiative linking Romance-language universities)

The Université de Sherbrooke has revolutionized teaching, particularly through the use of problem-based and project-based learning (PBL). In these two approaches, students work in small groups under the supervision of a tutor to solve a problem or carry out a project. They learn to perform research and synthesize information, develop autonomy and the ability to discuss as team members, and acquire both professional and personal skills.

In addition to being the first French-speaking university to adopt the co-op teaching approach, the Université de Sherbrooke still remains one of the leaders in this field. This method, which combines periods of study with paid work terms, allows a significant number of students to gain practi-cal experience while confirming to themselves they have chosen the right academic and career paths.

Education that Prepares Students

for thefUTUrE

The Université deSherbrooke offers more than

350 programs, all developed with a view to trai-

ning new generations of professionals that meet

the needs of employers. The in-depth knowledge

and skills of our faculty members; the program

structure, designed as a veritable learning pathway;

alternating work terms and periods of study in the

co-op program; and practical exercise and major

projects come together to form an integrated whole

that enables students to better master the material

and apply what they have learned to real situations.

That’s why Sherbrooke graduates stand out from

their first day on the labor market. That, too, is

seeing the future.

cENTRED ON PRAcTIcAL EXPERIENcE AND INNOVATION

Page 10: English Corporate Brochure 2014

Only Canadian citizens and landed immigrants can take part in the cooperative program.

The co-op benefits for students include gaining experience and earning a salary. Employers benefit from the services and knowledge of the next generation of university graduates highly interested in learning and succeeding.

In 1966, the Université de Sherbrooke established Quebec’s first university co-op program and remains the definite leader in this field. Our co-op offering consists of more than 40 programs, concentrations, and pathways.

Each year, our students go on nearly 4,000 internships throughout Quebec and even across the world. More than 50 people, including about 30 internship coordinators, seek out internship possi bilities in addition to advising and assisting students and employers throughout the cooperative experience.

Co-op graduates amass at least one year of relevant experience before earning their diplomas, while reaping the benefits of unrivaled career prepara-tion that employers genuinely value.

cooperative INTERNSHIPSThe Université de Sherbrooke’s co-op program gives students the

opportunity to work for companies in their chosen fields and meet

actual professionals, while working towards their degrees. This original

and practical approach alternates semesters of academic study with

semesters of full-time employment throughout the student’s program.

Total of $35M a year paid directly to interns

About 25% of internships in Eastern Townships, 25% in Montréal,

20% in Montérégie, and 10% in Québec City

Overall internship placement rate of 98% across all programs

of study

SCIENTIFIC COMPUTATION CENTREThe Université de Sherbrooke enjoys an enviable position with respect to Canadian high-performance computing (HPC) with one of Canada’s largest capacities for housing scientific com-puting equipment. Investigators can count on the regular upgrading of the Mammouth supercomputer and a sound technical team providing for the needs of many disciplines, in particular, chemistry, physics, biology, health sciences, remote sensing, and all areas of engineering.

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH PAVILIONThe Humanities and Social Sciences Research Pavilion brings together 300 professors and student researchers from the humanities, social sciences, and education. This state-of-the-art, LEED-certified building promotes interdisciplinary collaboration while providing appropriate spaces and equipment.

INTERDISCIPLINARY INSTITUTE FOR TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION (3IT)Located in the Université de Sherbrooke’s Innovation Park, 3IT covers 7,000-m2 of floor space and offers an outstanding environment for design, prototyping, and assessment, ranging from nanotechnologies up to systems and their applications. This joint uni-versity/industry working environment centred on interdisciplinarity houses Class 100 and 100,000 clean rooms; installations for mechanical, electro-nic, and computer prototyping; and a unique laboratory for assessing the use and ergonomics of new technolo-gies under actual conditions.

CANCER APPLIED RESEARCH PAVILIONThe importance of developing new strategies for fighting cancer is a major societal issue and is the job to which the researchers at the Cancer Applied Research Pavilion. Specialized in functional genomics, RNomics, can-cer proteomics, molecular oncology, and cellular biology, these research teams have cutting-edge facilities for pushing back the boundaries of knowledge about cancer.

BRP–UDES CENTREFOR ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY Located in the Université de Sherbrooke’s Innovation Park, this centre—the only one of its kind in Canada—focuses on developing cutting-edge new technologies pertaining to motorized recreational vehicles. Joint university/Bombardier Recreational Products teams work primarily on five themes: engines; transmissions and drive systems; suspension and shock absorbers; materials and manufacturing processes; and technologies that are more environmentally friendly. The facility includes laboratories, workshops, and offices as well as specialized research equipment.

MiQro INNOVATIONCOLLABORATIVE CENTRE (C2MI)Located in Bromont’s technology park about an hour from Sherbrooke, C2MI is an innovation centre for assembling the next generation of electronic chips. Based on powerful models of University/ industry partnering, C2MI is a crucial link in the microelectronics ecosystem in the northeastern part of the continent and one of the world’s most impor-tant research hubs in this field. C2MI recently received more than $218M for the construction of a building and the acquisition of research equipment.
