Accommodation

We use different hotels in the area, including the Holiday Inn, Bloomsbury and

the Grange Hotel, Holborn. There are two simple reasons we like to offer these

hotels (among others) – firstly, they are very good value for money, and secondly,

they’re a short walking-distance from our training centre.

Hotel

These are similar to a bed and breakfast, with one big difference: your host. We have

a wonderful group of experienced businesspeople, from journalists to entrepreneurs,

who are happy to chat to you over breakfast or in the evening. In fact, we think this is

an important part of your English-learning. Many of our participants really enjoy the

experience and have some lovely things to say about it. ‘A home away from home’ is

how we like to describe it.

We have two types of accommodation which you can choose from: homestays

and hotels. We believe it’s really important that you sleep well after an intensive day’s

training and so we have carefully selected our accommodation partners.

The CourseThis course is designed to help you perform better as a negotiator and will involve

substantial enactment of deal-making (preparation, negotiation and video feedback), as well

as discussion of your own world of negotiating. Theory is kept to a minimum. By the end of

Step 1

You decide what you want to work on: do you want to prepare for an important

presentation? A crucial negotiation? An upcoming meeting? Or perhaps you want to

The social programme – a sample

Monday

Pub Night

Join your fellow participants for a drink at the end of the day in a local English pub

where you can get to know each other and of course, practise your English.

Tuesday

Walk and Dinner

At the end of your training day, enjoy a walk along the Thames with the trainer and

fellow participants before going for dinner together in a typical British restaurant.

Use of English

Hans works for a multinational pharmaceutical company in Germany and is responsible

for IT services for the whole company. Until recently Hans didn’t have to use English

very often but since the company has been bought by an American company, he’s

having to use it more and more in teleconferences, in meetings and on the occasional

business trip. Hans has a very busy job, both professionally and personally, so he has

very limited time to spend on a course in London; one or two weeks at most.

His objectives

He would like to improve his English, particularly his comprehension skills, as he finds it

difficult to understand colleagues (both native and non-native speakers) in

teleconferences and meetings. He would also like to broaden his own range of

vocabulary and expression so that he can express himself more confidently. He’s

particularly interested in practising a couple of presentations as well as a few phone

calls so that he can perform better in these kinds of situations in future. As he doesn’t

Use of English

Until recently Rita was Regional Sales Manager, responsible for the sales of her

company’s entire range of products in the Madrid area. In this role, she rarely had to

use English as, for the most part, she was dealing with Spanish distributors and

colleagues. She has just been promoted to Country Sales Manager and is now going

to be reporting to the European Sales Director based at the HQ in Switzerland. She’s

going to have to take part in international meetings, for the most part via WebEx, with

her colleagues from their other European subsidiaries. She will be expected to present

sales figures and strategies and also to share ideas and support her international

colleagues. She will be writing more emails in English, making monthly trips to the HQ

and speaking to the European Sales Director in English on a weekly basis over the

phone.

Her objectives

In the week that she has set aside for her course, she would like to improve her

comprehension skills, her pronunciation, her range of active vocabulary and

expressions and ultimately, feel more confident when operating in English. She wants

to focus specifically on her sales presentations and phone calls with her manager so

has decided to do a 5-day Intensive Individual one-to-one programme.

Use of English

François has to use English regularly with his colleagues in the US headquarters,

mainly over the phone and in emails but also when they visit his subsidiary in northern

France. Even though he reports to the Managing Director for France, he is often

invited to present his figures via teleconference directly to the COO for the Group in

Montana. He has to explain why they have made certain decisions; update his

colleagues on any issues; outline his plan for the next quarter.

His objectives

Even though he has been using English regularly for the past few years, he still feels

that he doesn’t understand enough of what is said to him, particularly over the phone.

He would like to improve his comprehension skills so that he can feel more confident.

He is also concerned that he hesitates quite a lot when he speaks; he’d like to be able

to express himself more spontaneously and, of course, accurately. He would like to

focus exclusively on subjects and situations that arise in the world of manufacturing (his

sector) so has chosen to do a week of one-to-one training.
