A. ENGLISH CARNIVALS

Introduction

English is the language must often studied as a foreign language.Books, magazines, and

newspapers written in English are available in many countries around the

world.Therefore English language must not be used only in the classroom or when pupils

are in school.It has to be practiced in their daily conversation regardless place and

time.Therefore, an English Carnival was planned to be implemented in SJKC Kwong

Hon.

Aims

There are four aims of the English Carnival :

1. To make use of English in this school visible.

2. To progress pupils use more of English language in reading, speaking, listening

and writing.

3. To encourage all pupils to use English language as a medium of interaction with

their friends and teachers.

4. Teacher can encourage pupils start using English as early as seven years olds.

Objective

There are numbers of objectives of the English Carnival. The objectives are based on the

activities planned throughout the carnival. The table below shows the objective set for all

the activities.

Activities objectives :

1. Fish A Fish

Pupils pick a card.Then, fish out cards with names of animals, plants or thing according

to the written on the card.

Objectives - To attract the pupils to learns, use and love the English language.

2. Word Search

Pupils search for words in word maze.

Objectives – To enrich vocabulary.

3. Hidden picture

Pupils finds things hidden in pictures.

Objectives – To provide s new or different learning environment for the pupils.

4. Karaoke

Pupils sing with music in front of the television screen and their friends.

Objectives - To promote use of English in forms of songs.

5. What is the box

Pupils touch and tell what’s in the box.

Objectives – To attract the pupils to learns, use and love the English language.

6. Tell the colour

Pupils read a cards and tell the colour of the word written on the card.

Objectives – To equip the pupils with the skillsof organizing a major carnival and

gaining self confidence of their abilities.

7. Spot the different

Pupils study pictures and circle the different parts in the picture.

Objectives – To attract the pupils to learns, use and love the English language.

8. Act and Guess

Pupils work in pairs. One pupils picks a card with word and act out to let the partner

guess the words on the cards.

Duration of Programme

The English Carnivals was carried out from 1 November 2010 to 3 November 2010.All

activities were carried out from 7.30 a.m.to 10.00 a.m. The table below shows the details

of the implementation of the programmes.

1 November 2010 ( Monday )

7.30 – 8.00 a.m. Preparation and briefing to facilitators and pupils.

8.00 – 8.10 a.m. English Carnivals Officially Launch

8.10 – 9.30 a.m. Pupils from year 1 and 2 participate in the carnival.

2 November 2010 ( Tuesday )

7.30 – 8.00 a.m Preparation and briefing to pupils.

8.00 – 9.30 a.m. Pupils from year 3 and 4 participate in the games.

Report on implementation of programme

The English Carnivals was opened to all the pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. A team of

pupils will be selected to form the main committee members which are going to run the

carnivals independently with teacher’s supervision. Teacher will be facilitators and train

the pupils to handle the game booths in the school hall during the carnivals.In each game

booths,have some selected pupils in charges with it.The selected pupils will introduce and

explained to the participate about the games rules,how to play the games and prize of the

games.Participate will moved around one booth to another booth to complete their games

activities.Teacher as a facilitators will moving around the game booths or the school hall

to give some helps to the pupils.Through this, it is hoped that these selected pupils will

possess some experience on organizing a major carnivals and at the same time getting

fellow pupils having fun and fall in love with the English language.

Strengths and weaknesses of the programme

The implementation English Carnivals was a success. All the activities were carried out smoothly. However,

there were some strengths and weaknesses found when carrying out this programme. The table belows

shows the strengths and weaknesses of the programme.

- Local companies operating nearby the

school and PIBG sponsored the prized for

the pupils.

4. Pupils interact with other language

- When pupils play the games,some of

them interact with Mandarin or Bahasa

Malaysia.This is out of our target.

5. Games and prizes are very attractive

- Many pupils attract with the variety of

games and the prizes.

6. Plays with coupon

- Pupils buy the coupon before carnivals

and play the games using the coupon they

have buy that can avoid the issue of lost

money.

7. Use the token to exchange the prizes

- Teacher can refers the token that pupils

give to exchange the prizes that have win.

Suggestion and recommendations

In order to make English Carnivals more successful in the future, the English Language

Panel would like to give some suggestion and recommendations :

1. The duration of English Carnivals to be extended to one week next year.That will

enable more activities to be implemented and more pupils will be selected to

form the main committee members to run the carnivals independently .

2. The choice of activities must be variety to promote more participation of pupils

especially for the pupils standard one.This is more important to foster them to

love English at their tender age.

3. The English Panel would like to recommend to invite the nearby school’ pupils

to join the English Carnivals at our school.They can take participate of the games

in each booths or plan some games to add the new booths.This will foot in a good

relationship with each other.

4. The English Panel would also like to recommend the school administration to

allow activities to be carried out outside the formal school time table like

weekend so that more pupils and parents can join the carnivals at different time

and place.

5. The school administration must also take immediate action to repair and improve

the quality of the school P.A. system for a better quality of the carnivals.

Conclusion

The English Unit of SJK ( C ) KWONG HON organizing the first English Carnivals for

the pupils in this school. It is hoped that with the success of this carnivals, more pupils

will benefit from the fun of learning English.

As we believe in the National Education Philosophy, this carnival is aimed to further

develop the potential of pupils in a holistic and integrated manner, so as to produce pupils

who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonic,

based on a firm belief in and devotion to God.

Such an effort is designed to produce Malaysian citizens who are knowledgeable and

competent, who posses high moral standards and who are responsible and capable ao

archiving high level of personal well-being as well as being able to

contribute to the harmony and betterment of the family, the society and the nation at

large.

Finally, it is hoped that the management of our school and state Education Department

will give their full support in carrying out this carnival. We are glad to serve our school,

pupils and our nation specifically.

B. “ ENIKKI PROGRAMME ”

Introduction

The use of English Language is very important among school children. It must not be

used only in the classroom or when pupils are in school. It has to be practiced in their

daily conversation no matter where they are. A consistent use of English language will

ensure pupils especially at their tender age to inculcate the essential skills needed. Pupils

should master reading, speaking, listening, writing and grammer in English Language as

important skills at school. Therefore, an Enikki programme ( illustrated diary ) was

planned to be implemented in SJK ( C) KWONG HON.

Aims

There are a few of aims of the Enikki programme :

1. To progress pupils use more of English language in writing.

2. To encourage all pupils to use English language in writing as a medium to

expression the ideals.

3. To make sure pupils fall in love in English Language especially in writing.

4. To attract the pupils to learn and use the English Language to write the short story

about themselves.

5. To provide a different learning environment for pupils.

6. To train all pupils shows their feeling or opinion by drawing.

Objective

There are numbers of objectives of the Enikki programme.The objectivies are based on

1. Enikki can be a very effective means of cross-culture understanding of each

other’s live and cultures.

2. To creat a school which all pupils can able to read and write.

3. By creating and reading Enikki would work for literacy education for the pupils in

drawing.

6. To enable pupils to appreciate literature.

7. To promote use of English in forms of writing the diary.

8. To improve the writing skill.

9. To promote international exchanges.

10. To improve the literacy rate among the pupils in this school.

The Enikki programme was carried out from 14 June 2010 to 18 June 2010.The

programme were carried out after recess from 11.00 a.m.to 12.00 p.m. in the school hall.

Report on implementation of programme

The Enikki programme was the first organizing for the pupils of this school. Enikki,

that’s means a illustrated diaries that portray daily events and thoughts in the form of a

picture and a short essay. In the hope that Enikki can be a very effective means of cross-

cultural understanding of each other’s lives and cultures and that this eventually would

work for promotion of cultural exchange among the children in school. The Enikki’s

theme is “Here is my life.” Pupils are allowed to paint and write anything in their daily

lives that they have “done, seen or felt” , such as festivals, favorite pastimes, family and

friends or something that happened at school, in order to introduce their daily lives and

cultures to all of us.There have a few teacher teacher- in- charge with the Enikki

programme. In 14 June 2010 ( Monday ) , the teacher – in – charge was Mdm. Hazel and

Mdm.Chong Choon Meng.In 15 June 2010 ( Tuesday ) ), the teacher – in – charge was

Mdm. Chen Wan Yeen and Mdm.Lee Amoi. In 16 June 2010 ( Wednesday ), the teacher

– in – charge was Mdm.Tan Hui Nee and Mdm. Teo Hui Szee. In 17 June 2010

( Thursday ), the teacher – in – charge was Mdm. Vasanthy and Mdm Soo Kun Kim. In

18 June 2010 ( Friday ) was a ceremony day, the teacher – in – charge was Mdm. Fong

Sau Kwan , Mdm.Chong Choon Meng and Mdm.Tan Hui Nee.On that day, teacher will

give the winner trofy and certificate as a appreciation. The Enikki started as

scheduled.All the pupils will take the participate for this Enikki programme.The teacher –

in – charge in that day will stay at the school hall to make sure the programme carried out

smoothly.

Strengths and weaknesses of the programme

The implementation Enikki Programme was a success. The programme were carried out

smoothly. However, there were some strengths and weaknesses found when carrying out

this programme. Below are show that the strengths and weaknesses of the programme :

Strengths :

Pupils free to write anythings their like.It can help pupils built up their confidence

in their writing or essay in the future.

Through practices with the Enikki, pupils will more sensitive to the things around

them.This is because Enikki is write something was happen around them, what

they have seen and feeling about somethings was happened e.g. Tsunami in

Japan.

Pupils will more transparency about their friends thinking or preferences by

Enikki.Pupils can read the short essay about their friends was write or look at the

illustrate that was draw to understand their friends.

Enikki can make pupils love to write in English and train their write diaries

everyday.

Weaknesses :

Lack of vocabulary.For the pupils those are lack of vocabulary can not presents a

good Enikki.They will maybe face on the problem that do not know to use the

suitable or correct words to expression their minds.So, that will make them do not

interesting in Enikki.

Pupils have to little knowledge in grammer.So, pupils cannot expression their

thinking very well.

Pupils cannot speed up their mind in words clearly.This is because pupils lack in

vocabulary and grammer.

Some of the pupils cannot draw clearly and the picture do not matching with what

they have wrote.

Some of the pupils will confuse with the meaning of Enikki.They always write

about the comman things like my birthday, my friends. Teacher must always

remind pupils to write the most interesting content.

Suggestion and recommendations

In order to make Enikki programme more successful in the future, the English Language

Panel would like to give some suggestion and recommendations. First, it is suggested that

pupils can read good Enikki return by other pupils or search from Internet and download

it.This can help pupils to make reference before start to write Enikki.Second, pupils also

can read more short news even from newspaper, magazine or book.It is help for pupils to

enrich their grammer and vocabulary.

The English Language would also like to recommand the English Language teacher to

encourage pupils to do correction after do the Enikki exercise.This can help pupils to

know what mistake they have done and will not repeat.The English Language teacher

also have to practice pupils to do the Enikki exercise very often. Pupils must do at least

one Enikki a week to make sure they will used be write Enikki very well.Lastly, English

Language teacher have to accept pupil’s Enikki even it is very short likes two or three

sentences.It is important to help our children to build their confidence and encourage they

love to write more Enikki.

Conclusion

It is hoped that Enikki programme 2010 implemented by the English Language Panel of

SJK ( C ) KWONG HON be benefitted by all pupils. In the hope that Enikki can be a

very effective means of cross-cultural understanding of each other’s lives and cultures

and that this eventually would work for promotion of cultural exchange among the

children in school. The English Language Panel hope that our school children can send

them Enikki to Japan to join the competition of Enikki.This is a valuable and good

experience for our child. The English Language Panel also hope that to further improve

the Enikki programme in order to make use of English Language more visible in this

school.
