BACK TO NATURE
Taman Negara is the largest and most famaus national park in Malaysia. Whether you are looking to jungle trek, fish or relax, you
can do it all at Taman Negara. To explore the lowlands, follow the marked trails. Wildlife observation hides can be found overlooking salt licks where small
animals come to supplement their mineral intake. Unless you happen to be very fortunate, it is unlikely that you will see any large wildlife but do keep a look-out for elephant droppings and tiger footprints.
You can also take a boat on rivers like Sungai Kenyam for fishing or for a leisurely ride down Sungai Tahan to enjoy a pleasant day of swimming and picnicking.
Taman Negara is also home to Peninsular Malaysia’s tallest mountain -- Gunung Tahan. Climbing the 2187 metre mountain takes a few days, and you will be well advised to train hard before you leave.
After you become an old hand at mountain climbing, head for Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Southeast Asia. Not many people know it but in Sepilok, 15 minutes drive from Sandakan, there is the world’s largest orang utan sanctuary. Baby
orang utans which have been abandoned by their mothers are rehabilitated until they are fit enough to be returned to the wild. Also nestled in Sabah is one of Malaysia’s last remaining primary lowland rainforests. Protected as a forest reserve since 1995,
Danum Valley preserve the best of the natural world - fascinating plants and animals, and the rivers and wetlands of Borneo.
