February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. CARDV is participating in a national effort to raise awareness by educating individuals to identify when teen dating violence is occurring in their own lives, or to someone they know. Dating violence is a pattern of abusive behaviors used to exert power and control over a dating partner. Teen dating violence can occur in all teen relationships regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity or ability. Teens who have experienced teen dating violence are more likely to engage in behavior such as abuse of drugs and alcohol, unhealthy dieting behaviors and risky sexual behaviors. Possible warning signs of teen dating violence are a partner checking a survivor's cell phone or email without permission, jealousy, isolating the survivor from friends and family, possessiveness, and controlling what the survivor can do, or who they can talk to. Part of CARDV’s mission is to provide education and leadership within the community to change the societal conditions that cultivate these forms of violence. This current school year (September-January), CARDV has provided almost 100 presentations to more than 2,500 students in Linn and Benton Counties. "I didn't know this was a resource for us. I'm so glad you talked to us about this, because it happened to a friend of mine and I didn't who to turn to." -high school student To learn more about the Community Education program or schedule a presentation, please contact Adaline Padlina at [email protected]. Agency Update - Letetia Wilson, Executive Director In honor of Teen Dating Violence Awareness month this February, I would like to highlight CARDV’s Community Education program. We are happy to share that CARDV’s Community Education program is growing and we are connecting with more teens now than ever. The Community Education program is facilitated by CARDV Advocates who present to local area middle and high schools. Presentation topics include healthy relationships, consent, and how to help a friend or family member who is experiencing violence or has experienced violence in the past. We are so appreciative of local area teachers and school administrations who have invited CARDV into

classrooms. We could not make these connections without them. In an effort to better meet teens’ needs for advocacy, we have partnered with the National Network to End Violence to add a chat line for survivors to connect with an Advocate. While anyone can use this service, teens may be more likely to access CARDV services through a chat line if they are more comfortable typing than talking. Once our chat lines are in place, survivors and their allies will have a safe place online to access information, safe adults to chat with about their relationships and experiences, and a better link to all of CARDV’s Advocacy services. We are excited to offer this pilot program. Comments can be sent to Letetia Wilson at [email protected] or (541) 758-0219 x304.

Spaghetti Dinner CARDV’s Annual

Thanks to community support this past holiday season, survivors received gifts from CARDV's holiday program for their family’s celebrations. This year we were able to collect gifts for 40 families including over 60 children! Thank you to the local businesses who hosted drop off sites for gifts: Burn Boot Camp, Citizens Banks in Albany and Lebanon, Hair Body & Sole, and Ticor Title Corvallis! And special thank you to the Rotary Club of Greater Corvallis for their yearly support of this program.

Making the Holiday Brighter

“I want to give a big hug to

everyone who donated these

gifts. My kids will be so surprised

and happy. Thank you!”

Advocate for Social Justice Award We are proud to announce Rebecca Moyes as the 2018 Mary Zelinka Advocate for Social Justice awardee. This is the highest honor that CARDV reserves for a member of the community who goes above and beyond in their field to serve survivors of domestic and sexual violence. As a SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) at Sarah’s Place located in Samaritan Albany General Hospital, Rebecca’s role is to provide medical services to survivors who experience sexual assault. Through this role, she is able to provide information and resources for survivors of sexual violence while empowering them to make informed decisions. She has used her position and expertise to also focus on prevention by educating youth in our community about sexual assault. In partnership with CARDV, Rebecca has facilitated presentations to local area schools where she discusses sexual violence, consent, how to support a friend and access services. Thanks to Rebecca, students in our community know how to support someone experiencing violence, medical and advocacy resources available, and that violence is never the survivor’s fault. Now students can join us in changing the culture.

Congratulations! Thank you so much for all of your hard work Rebecca!
