Second Sunday of Easter Page 7
Dear friends on the journey,
Do you remember the movie Titanic with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio? The ship has hit theiceberg and is taking on water quickly, chaos ensues, panic and fear are rampant among the crew andpassengers, especially the lower class who were not guaranteed safety or rescue. A mother realizesthe fate of her little family: they are not escaping this horrendous night. To spare her young children, she tucks them in bed together and tells them a story, probably something she did every day of theirlives. She creates a loving, familiar, peaceful environment that will be their last.
In today’s gospel, just a day after Jesus’ resurrection, the disciples are locked in a room, dazed andconfused, fearful and in disbelief, worried they would be killed too. Can you imagine what they musthave felt given the events of the previous days? All of a sudden the risen Jesus appears to them andlater Thomas puts his fingers in Jesus’ wounds so he can experience for himself the risen Jesus.
These encounters of the risen Jesus offer extraordinary teachings, not only for the disciples locked inthe room but for us, his disciples in 2017 Camarillo.
Jesus’ very first words to them are “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” Hethen breaths on them, saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and who sins you retain are retained.” The gift of the Holy Spirit brought them inner peace and thestrength to create peace in their community as they went about teaching, healing and forgiving sins.
Our climate isn’t any different than theirs. Today’s world is very much in a state of unrest. Fear, panic, power struggles, uncertainty of the future, anxiety, hopelessness abound today. We can’t seemto get away from it and see our way forward. Where is peace and harmony? It starts with us. We toohave been given the Holy Spirit to be the peacemakers and offer forgiveness in our homes, families, neighborhoods and community. With all the chaos swirling around us, we must be intentional aboutcreating loving, peaceful moments and environments for ourselves and for others. This is when weget to experience the risen Jesus.
This Easter season may we “begin to see the world as God sees the world and to become the self thatsees life through the eyes of Jesus and then, like Jesus, bends to become the miracle the worldawaits” (Sr. Joan Chittister).
Easter blessings,
Teresa RunyonFaith Life Minister
