About our LiturgyThe Book of Common Prayer (BCP, the red book in your pew) contains our prayers and services for our life as a church. We call these our liturgies. Our liturgies for Holy Eucharist, Baptism, Marriages and Burials, daily prayers, and for prayers and worship over almost any human experience live deep within the words of the BCP.

For a more in-depth look at the Episcopal Church and our beliefs, we invite you to look at page 845 of the BCP.

Collect for Purity

Canticle S 278

The Collect of the DayO God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Scripture Reading Acts 2:1-21When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, ap-peared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mes-opotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one an-other, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

`In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.Even upon my slaves, both men and women,in those days I will pour out my Spirit;and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven aboveand signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darknessand the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 104:25-35, 37 Sung by the choir.25 O Lord, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, * creatures both small and great.27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.29 You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth.32 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; * may the Lord rejoice in all his works.33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke.34 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.35 May these words of mine please him;

4

I will rejoice in the Lord.37 Bless the Lord, O my soul. * Hallelujah!

Gospel Reading John 14:8-17

Priest: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Philip said to Jesus, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for any-thing, I will do it.“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.”

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Calling Art Sale Volunteers! The 2019 ECW Art Sale is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, Nov. 7, at Christ Church. We are looking forward to it being an incredible event filled with beautiful art from many local artists and we need YOUR help! If you are interested in volunteering this year, or have past Art Sale experience, we would love your support. There are many ways to be involved but first and foremost, we need help with acquisitions. This will involve following up with the very talented artists who have showed paintings in the past and also recruiting new artists who have never participated (this will all take place during the summer months). Other volunteer opportunities include: set-up (we would love some experienced helpers to lead us!); raffle; sale volunteers (runners, cashiers, etc.); clean-up. Please let us know if you’ll join the Art Sale Committee this year. It’s an event so many people look forward to and we promise it will be tons of fun!Faithfully, Adrienne Brewer, Elaine Wood, Katie Dunn, & Cynthia Ray (2019 ECW Art Sale Co-Chairs)

Beginning Today: Weekly Young Adults Book DiscussionThis summer, the Young(ish) Adults will gather at their regular time of 4 p.m. on Sundays, in the Library, for a book discussion. The group will read and discuss “Walk in Love: Episcopal Beliefs and Practices.” Using the book and the online videos that accompany it, we plan to consider the prayers, sacraments, and teachings of the Episcopal Church. This discussion series will begin today, June 9, and reading along in the book is encouraged but not required for anyone to participate.

Day of PentecostToday: Day of PentecostToday, June 9, we invite you to wear red as we celebrate the birthday of the Church. Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means “50th day” and is celebrated 50 days after Easter Sunday.

At All Services - United Thank Offering (UTO)Our spring in-gathering for UTO will be collected at all services today. The intent of this ministry, sponsored by the ECW, is that parishioners of all ages donate in thankfulness for the everyday blessings of their lives. Money collected goes on to provide blessings for others, domestic and abroad, as an outreach of the Episcopal Church. Take time to note the everyday blessings in your life and give thanks. Through daily thankfulness comes great generosity. The UTO grants are awarded for projects that address human needs and help alleviate poverty, both domestically and internationally in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion.

Confirmation for Youth 2019-2020Confirmation is a sacramental rite where you are affirming your covenant, or promise, from Baptism that was made by your parents. Confirmation is your turn to prepare and renew or strengthen your beliefs. In Confirmation we ask for God’s help in our relationship with God and with the Church. There is not a set time in life to be confirmed. Everyone must answer for themselves “I do”, “I Believe,” and “I will with God’s Help.” Your church and family provide the support, but it is your decision. We begin to offer confirmation as a class for students during their 8th grade year; however, you can be confirmed at other ages as well. Confirmation registration and information is on the Christ Church website under the youth page. For any questions, please contact Liz Stroff, [email protected]. We are looking forward to a wonderful year.Confirmation registration is due by June 15 for rising 8th graders (2019-2020): http://bit.ly/19confirmationSponsors registration is due Sept. 15: http://bit.ly/19sponsors

“Episcopally Speaking” A closer look at the language and movements of the Episcopal Liturgy.

Pentecost is the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means “fiftieth day” and is celebrated fifty days after Easter Sunday. Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost Sunday. The clergy wear red vestments to signify the work of the Spirit. It is also a custom in many churches for the people in the congregation to wear red on the Day of Pentecost as well. We wear red to remind us of the fire of the Spirt. Red recalls the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on the first Pentecost.
