WHY DOES EQUIPMENT FAIL?
AND CAN WE PREVENT IT?
Source HPI 2011:- 91% of bearings do not reach their conservative design life.
Machines don’t die, we kill them.
▲ 25% are preventable but not prevented because of an arbitrary decision that is simply not rooted in
knowledge or experience
▲ 15% are predictable but not predicted
▲ 20% are predicted but not stopped to undertake repair
▲ 25% are predicted and equipment is shut down
▲ 14% are other (consequential to an external activity)
▲ 1% are neither preventable nor predictable
CHARTING ASSET FAILURE
What causes a Bad Actor?
▲ Deficient Maintenance Strategy
▲ Task Frequency Incorrect
▲ Activity Not Performed As Scheduled
▲ Procedural Enforcement
▲ Parts Availability
▲ Design Change Needed

KEY BENEFITS OF EAM
Reduce unplanned outages
▲ What is the cost of one hour of downtime?
▲ 5% average production loss per annum due to unscheduled downtime
Reduce downtime
▲ More timely and effective responses to issues
▲ More effective shutdown/turnaround
Reduce unnecessary preventive maintenance
▲ 30 to 50% of preventive maintenance is unnecessary
▲ Can represent 10 to 20% of total maintenance cost

CITY OF ROHNERT PARKSAVES $200K /YEAR WITH INCREASED BILLING ACCURACY
Page 33Confidential Property of Wonderware California
Were previously direct billed by Regional Sanitation District.
Historical Trends for Sewer Flow Daily/Monthly Totals are now used for billing because the city’s flow meters are
calibrated regularly.
Discrepancies were found averaging 2-3 MGD, saving the an average of 18,000 a month
TROUBLESHOOTING PRESSURE SPIKES
Page 34Confidential Property of Wonderware California
Every morning a pressure spikes occurred between 2am-5am, Wells would shut off because of increased back
pressure. Utilizing trends found none of the tanks were boosting or filling. It was narrowed down to the irrigation
schedule in the morning. Made set point changes on pressure reducing valves. If more pressure reducing
valves were added to SCADA to monitor pressure and flow it would allow operators to pinpoint anomalies
TROUBLESHOOTING I/I IN SEWER LINES
Page 35Confidential Property of Wonderware California
On the sewer system during a rain event sewer flow stations would go from the normal flow 4-6 MGD to 15
MGD. Using Historical trends and flows, Operators were able to isolate areas where there was an increase in
infiltration in the line versus just an increase in sewer effluent.
