The Grand Theatre - London, Ontario2013.14 Season

The Grand Theatre in London, Ontario packs a lot of history within its walls. The Grand saw amajor renovation in the 1970s, which has made it one of the finest performing arts theatres inNorth America (The Grand Theatre). The Grand Theatre’s mission is to bring artists andcommunities together to share stories through meaningful theatre experiences. The vision ofThe Grand is one of a creative, compassionate world connected and enriched by the arts.

During any given season, The Grand employs an average of 55 actors. Close to 300 peoplework for The Grand over the course of a year. Of those, about eight are employed in thewardrobe department making costumes, hats and jewelry. The rest work as designers, directors, stage managers, backstage technicians, props makers, set builders, front-of-housestaff, building maintenance, box office representatives, marketing, sponsorships andfundraising (The Grand Theatre).

London, Ontario is a two-hour drive west of Toronto, Ontario and another two hours toDetroit, Michigan. With a population of almost half a million people, it is also home toFanshawe and Western University. According to Statistics Canada the majority of itspopulation is age 15-64, and 46% of couples have children. This demographic gives way totwo very good possibilities of having family programming, such as musicals and theatreclassics, as well as the experimental theatre for some of the other 50% of couples that do nothave children. With the universities, the city of focused on cultural activities, among its otherstrengths of education, healthcare, tourism and manufacturing (London). With a focus oneducation, the School Boards are very willing to partner with local theatres to enrich thecurriculum. The Grand works well the School Boards to present work that is both entertaining

and educational.

Even though the population is growing rapidly, the average household income in London isnot overly wealthy; London is very consistent with the overall population of Canada. Wantingto maintain an audience and keep our ticket prices low, our presented shows are onlyavailable for one week. If we can bring the artists or company in for two weeks, it seemsmore beneficial to growing the theatre culture both through presentation and education.

As a producer and presenter of the performing arts, The Grand has set out to make this2013-14 season its finest yet. From traditional Shakespeare, to musical theatre, to the moreexperimental, this season is sure to have something for everyone. While formally it is a

producing house, with Artistic Director Sue Ferley, it will also present works from outside ofLondon under the direction of executive director Deb Harvey and Production Manager

Andrea Surich. With support for The Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council,Canadian Heritage, as well as a few more, The Grand has ample support, ensuring the bestpossible productions it can present and produce.

The Grand Theatre boasts four main spaces for use: the Mainstage, the McManus StudioTheatre, the Poster Lounge, and the McManus Lounge (The Grand Theatre). The Mainstage

Theatre is a proscenium arch stage with seating for 839 patrons. The Mainstage reflects thediversity of theatre throughout the world producing musicals, classical theatre, and presentingthe newest theatrical sensations. As well, it is host to the annual musical theatre production ofThe Grand Theatre School. The McManus Theatre is the studio theatre with a 150-seat capacity. The McManus theatre

presents theatre that challenges the audience and experiments with new ideas, children’stheatre, and an annual Theatre School production. The Poster Lounge is ideal for galas and weddings, with room for 300 people at a receptionor 80 people for a sit-down dinner. The McManus lounge works well for small galas, annual general meetings, a gallery space, and a host for the site-specific festival in London. The lounge has a capacity for 100 people.

With its proximity to Toronto, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph and Windsor, The Grand Theatrein London, Ontario is able to take advantage of the diverse local and touring companies thatexist and visit the surrounding cities. The following season is programmed to emphasize theGrand Theatre’s mandate to bring artists and communities together, presenting a variety of

large-scale theatre productions and invigorating the community with their own talentedindividuals through in-house productions. Being so close to Toronto and Stratford, The GrandMainstage and Studio Theatre produce in-house productions with local and internationalactors, providing opportunities for the smaller cities and communities that surround Londonthe opportunity to experience theater as it might be found in a metropolitan centre withouthaving to travel so far. In addition, The Grand works closely with educators and the schoolboards to bridge the gap between the arts and education. With this education outreach, TheGrand is helping build up the new theatre community in London.

Both seasons, Mainstage and McManus Studio, are carefully programmed, considering whatare the most appropriate performances for the season depending on typical seasonalconditions, costs, school schedules, and London’s demographics. Both seasons areconsidered as a one whole to make sure that they mix together and will not steal audiencefrom one another. In the following programming descriptions, there is reason for why eachshow was picked and placed in the season.

different period of time. Each presented show run time depends on the touring schedule andavailability. Looking at past seasons, fall presentations and musicals sell the most seats.

September 18-22, 2013 The Voca People

International (Israel/USA) A new inter-galactic phenomenal like no other show. Amazingvocal sounds, accapella singing with the art of beat box creating

an incredible range of sounds and instruments. An evening of total excitement, music of all times, comedy andaudience participation. After a millennium of space travel, The Voca People, are finallylanding on the unfamiliar planet Earth, sadly discovering that their precious spaceshipcharger - Musical energy - has completely emptied. Slowly, The Voca People learn thestrange habitants, habits and music of planet Earth, and with the help of the audience, musically energize their unique spaceship. The Voca People are friendly aliens from the

planet Voca, somewhere behind the sun...where all communication is made by music andvocal expressions. The Voca People believe that life is music and music is life. They visit planet Earth and theyhave a lot to sing about (The Voca People).

This is the Mainstage Season opener. With its international success and accessible content,it is a high-calibre show for those of all ages. I think it is a great way to start the mainstageseason as it will create excitement and show the high quality performances we continue topresent. Aligning with The Voca People Canadian tour is also a financial gain; thus we needthe show to be in the fall.

November 7-9 and 14-16, 2013 Winners and LosersBy Replacement Theatre - Vancouver, BC

A staged conversation that embraces the ruthlesslogic of capitalism, and tests its impact on our closest

personal relationships as well as our most intimateexperiences of self.

Theatre artists and long-time friends Marcus Youssef and James Long sit at a table and playa game they made up called Winners and Losers. In it, they name people, places or things —Tom Cruise, microwave ovens, their fathers, rainforests, druids, etc. — and debate whetherthese things are winners or losers. As each seeks to defeat the other, the debate becomeshighly personal, as they dissect each other's individual, familial and class histories. Andbecause one of these men is the product of economic privilege, and the other not, thecompetition very quickly begins to cost  (Theatre Replacement).

Piggybacking on CanStage in Toronto, we are presenting this innovative and dynamic duo inthe fall as they pass through our neighbouring metropolitan city (Canadian Stage). Sure tomake people think that it belongs in our Studio series, our patrons will be surprised andchallenged by Winners and Losers. It shows that our theatre is not just programming for thefamily, but also for the contemporary adult. A play about everyday things, it will not alienate

London’s audiences, but hopefully broaden their theatrical horizons. It is serious enough toplace in between the high-calibre season opener and the Christmas classic to follow.

December 13-15 and 20-22, 2013 A Christmas Carol (In House Production), London, ONBased on the story by Charles Dickens

Adapted and Directed by Susan Ferley, Artistic Director of TheGrand

A miserly and miserable man, Ebenezer Scrooge (played by J.C.Cutler for the second year) greets each Christmas with a “bah

humbug,” until he is visited one Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, ChristmasPresent and Christmas Future. Through a restless night, the spirits show him happymemories from his past, cruel realities from the present and the grim future should hecontinue his cantankerous ways (Guthrie Theatre).

Going with a Christmas Classic this year, sure to bring in the masses of families that gather inLondon, A Christmas Carol  is being produced in-house by Susan Ferley. Being a timelessclassic, a family affair, and perfect for the season, this play should appeal to the generalpatrons of The Grand.

January 30-February 2 and February 6-9, 2014Jersey Boys (In House Production), London, ONBy Bob Gaudio, Bob CreweBook by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice

A musical biography of the Four Seasons—the rise, the tough timesand personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friendswhose music became symbolic of a generation. Far from a mere tributeconcert (though it does include numbers from the popular FourSeasons songbook), Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationshipsat the center of the group—with a special focus on frontman FrankieValli, the small kid with the big falsetto. In addition to following the

quartet’s coming of age as performers, the core of the show is how an allegiance to a code ofhonor learned in the streets of their native New Jersey got them through a multitude ofchallenges: gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters. Jersey Boys is a glimpse atthe people behind a sound that has managed to endure for over four decades in the hearts ofthe public (Broadway Across Canada Ottawa).

Brought to the table by Jack Grinhaus, our Apprentice Artistic Director, we are producing themusical Jersey Boys to cheer up those dreary winter days. With holdovers in Toronto and aNorth American Broadway tour, this smash-hit is meant to put some spark into the New Year.On a national Broadway tour, The Grand brings it’s own twist of the new timeless favorite!

March 18-23, 2014Classical Theatre Project Presents Shakespeare

Toronto, ONCo-presented with London District Public School Board

 Alternating Performances

Romeo and Juliet  Gallop apace, you fiery-footed steeds! Shakespeare’s original, vibrant language comes racing to life in CTP’s production of

Romeo and Juliet. Set in an Elizabethan marketplace, the energy, talent and dedication ofour youthful cast brings the feeling of a rock concert to each performance. With sold outshows across North America, and recognition from the International Performing Arts forYouth Showcase and the Canada Council for the Arts, CTP’s production of Romeo & Juliet can rightly be called an international phenomenon (The Classical Theatre Project).Runs 2 hours 30minsComplete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)

All 37 Plays in 75 Minutes! An irreverent, educational and fast-paced romp through the Bard's

plays, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is a hit with audienceseverywhere!Join three brilliant performers as they weave their wicked way through all of Shakespeare'sworks in one wild ride that will leave you breathless with laughter (The Classical TheatreProject).

This is an educational co-presentation with the London District School board. London,Ontario is close to Stratford, Canada’s home of Shakespeare. However, it is not closeenough to provide educational presentations. As every student will study Shakespeare at onepoint or another in their school experience, The Grand and the School Board are presentingtwo of Toronto’s Classical Theatre Project plays. This company is known for makingShakespeare’s work accessible and fun for students, yet still entertaining for the generalpublic. CTP is bringing the tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet, which deals with issues thatstill resonate with present audiences. Alternating with this classic is the Complete Works ofShakespeare (Abridged), a sidesplitting rendition of all the Bard’s works. As CTP will bepresenting workshops in schools, along with matinees and evening performances, bringing intwo plays with different casts, that alternate, will give the actors enough down time andprovide the most access to all of Shakespeare’s work for the whole city. Seasonally, this willfit with educators as the students will either be studying Shakespeare at the time, or will in thefuture. Talking with the School Board we have discovered that teachers like to have theirstudents experience Shakespeare on stage, even if it is not the play there are currentlystudying. We expect to sell out and make excellent connections with local educators forfuture collaborations.

April 10-13, 2014Project Kudelka: In Paradisum (Dance), Toronto, ONColeman & LemieuxChoreographer: James KudelkaDuration: 90 min with interlude

Page 10: Entrepreneurial Programming - AGAD 225

Project Kudelka consists of the following three works: Fifteen Heterosexual Duets, Soudainl’hiver dernier and In Paradisum. In Paradisum is quintessential Kudelka. It has the natural flexibility and range of moderndance supported by the precision of classical dance. It combines turbulent movement withemphatic gestures, memorable tableaux and surprising moments of ethereal serenity.

Dedicated to the memory of his mother, In Paradisum has the trademark of demanding, fast- paced intricate movement patterns and natural emotional power. Yet, in spite of its emotionalresonance for the choreographer, the work finds control through its immersion in puretechnique, which in turn transforms, even masks, the emotionalism for the dancers(ColemanLemieux Compagnie).

With spring in the air, people tend to think of things moving and growing. What better way tocelebrate the snow melting that with the joyous movements of James Kudelka in ProjectKudelka. Coleman & Lemieux, two former dancers with Toronto Dance Theatre, work closelywith Kudelka on a regular basis, bringing their cast of highly talented dancers to The Grand’sstage. As London has a small dance community and a large dance studio community,

including their proximity to Toronto, this contemporary ballet is sure to draw the curiousmasses of aspiring stage performers. This company always provides generous workshops forthe local dance community and for schools.

May 2-4 and 9-11, 2014 Grand Theatre School Musical Theatre Production: Into the WoodsBy Stephen Sondheim and James LapineThe story follows a Baker and his wife who wish to have a child,Cinderella who wishes to attend the King's Festival, and Jack who

wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn thatthey cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break thecurse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt themlater with disastrous results (MTI).

Just in time for Mother’s Day, The Grand Theatre School is producing it’s annual musical. With the theme this year being wood, Sondheim’s fairytale classic Into the Woods follows thetheatrical fall production of Thomas’ Under Milk Wood . This youth musical is a bouquet of fun, stitching together many Grimm fairytale classics to create a wacky story. While the stories aremeant for children, there is plenty of sophistication, as in most Sondheim’s plays, to tantalizethe adult viewer. Although not part of the regular season, this is a great wrap up for theMainstage Theatre.

A tragicomic duet for two women, realized through an expert weaving ofBouffon and contemporary physical language. Burpee and Swan’s complicityas performers creates a volatile and enigmatic relationship, bearing witnessto darkness, levity, and the absurd (Susie Burpee).

Opening the Studio Theatre season is one of Toronto’s contemporary dance darling, SusieBurpee, and her equally thrilling partner Linnea Swan who bring their quirky, new duet to TheGrand. With David Earle Dance Theatre in Guelph, London is no stranger to contemporarydance. This duet is half theatre, half dance, and a great way to enter a season. We believethat people will be more inclined to come to a dance performance at the start of a seasonwhen they are excited about a new season. As people are excited to start the theatre season,we are determined to introduce them to contemporary dance in a humourous andentertaining way.

October 24-27, 2013 Grand Theatre School/Advanced Group Production:Under Milk WoodBy Dylan Thomas

This is a delightful if peculiar story of a day in the life of a small,Welsh fishing village called "Llareggub" (read it backwards). Wemeet a host of curious characters (and ghosts) through the 'eyes'of Blind Captain cat. This is a true "Classic" of modern British

writing with a wonderful, mischievous use of language. One night while the townsfolk wrestle with their dreams, seedy Captain Cat and a strangerwalk the streets. Captain Cat is a blind, retired sea captain, recalling memories of drownedshipmates and Rosie Probert, a whore and the one great love of his youth (IMBd Milkwood).

The Advanced Group (Age 15-19) fall production is The Grand’s Theatre School rendition ofUnder Milk Wood  by Dylan Thomas. Falling in between the quirky Craigslist Cantata, the

deep conversation of Winners and Losers and the classic Christmas Carol , Londonaudiences will be treated to the budding actors in this strange-world play. Keeping in formwith the studio mandate for producing challenging theatre, this play will not only challenge theaudience, but also bring a new experience to the students of the Theatre School.

November 27-30, 2013 Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata

Acting Up Stage CompanyThis hilarious song cycle is a musical litany of our needs, wantsand what we share online. Stuffed penguins, decapitated dollsand love for sale. Composer Veda Hille and the CBC’s BillRichardson enchant us with what humanity has to offer.

This musical is sure to resonate with more than just the theatre community. This witty veteranduo, with a connection to Canada’s beloved CBC and coming off rave reviews from Toronto’sFactory Theatre, A Craigslist Cantata will lighten up the pending winter season with a curiouslook into the buy/sell/trade database of Craigslist, a website familiar to the general public.

Join the half a million Simpsons/Shakespeare fans who have made MacHomer one of theworld's biggest little hits. Spot-on impressions of characters from the hit series populate thisimaginatively staged version of the tragedy, a multi-media update truly “full of sound andfury”. The result is that rare jewel: an educational and entertaining show, which has amazedaudiences of all ages, backgrounds and languages. For reviews, photos and video clips, visit

www.MacHomer.com (Rick Miller).

Rick Miller is a one-man phenomenon. He will be the first show presented after Christmas. Acheap and easy production to bring in from neighbouring Toronto, MacHomer , is the perfectfit for almost anyone. While a complement to our coming production of Shakespeare, Millermakes the Bard’s classic Macbeth as accessible as possible by combining it with the popularTV cartoon, The Simpsons. As most people are familiar with both Shakespeare and theSimpsons, we believe this will bring in a new audience and refresh the patrons with somehumour in the dead of winter.

February 27-March 1 and March 6-8, 2014 Waiting for Godot (In-House Production), London, ONBy Samuel BeckettTwo tramps wait for a man named Godot, but instead meet a

pompous man and his stooped-over slave (IMBd Godot).

This small play with will be re-worked by our Artistic Director,Sue Ferley and the perfect companion to round out the

variety of work available in the Studio Theater. It is financially a good play to produce, butalso historically a great work. It is accessible to high school students and theatre newcomers,as well as the aficionados. With the cast, the Theatre Students will workshop the play duringtheir March break. This will also bridge the gap between the end of the musical Jersey Boysand the beginning of Shakespeare week.

Mermaid Theatre is best known for unique stage adaptations of children’s beloved literaryclassics. Five million spectators in fifteen countries have applauded the innovative puppetry, striking scenic effects, evocative original music and gentle storytelling (Mermaid Theatre ofNova Scotia).

The last show of the season is dedicated to the young families in London. However, it seemsthat Eric Carle’s books have been around long enough to even entice a slightly olderaudience. What is even more enticing is the artistry of puppetry. Mermaid Theatre will be inLondon for the entire week working with local schools in puppet workshops, and performingmatinees and evening performances Wednesday-Sunday. A choice to keep it intimate in theStudio Theatre, this will be a great connection for young school audiences as a final field tripwith plenty of fascinating information about puppetry and story telling.
