• 1 tub of PVA• 2 pairs of scissors• 2 Stanley knives• 12 full scale prints• 10 cut up chair boxes• 2 rolls of chicken wire • 150 used newspapers

• 1 bag of flour• 2 large paint brushes• 1 comedy Viking hat• 2 tins of masonry paint• 1 spray gun • 6 happy helpers later…

Sammy the bull was born!

No Green Bull* In 2008, we noticed that everyone seemed to be talking about environmental issues. On the one hand we agreed that this was great- We certainly need to be! On the other hand, this led to a tidal wave of eco-marketing with products of every type from soap powder to SUV’s claiming to help save the planet.

We felt we wanted to talk about this topic without the traps of unfounded claims and visual clichés, so we put a report together to tell our customers what we’re doing and why- No Green Bull!

At the same time as we were developing our report we were asked by our local rugby squad to build them a lifesized version of their mascot to support them at a tournament in West Wales…As a company proud to support our local community we took the bull by the horns (so to speak!)

Since 2008, there has been a fair few editions of our environmental document but our message has remained the same… No Green Bull*

Shared responsibilityEveryone in the business has a role to play!

Environmental Management System

ISO 14001 is a key platform to drive our initiatives...the real issue is implementing change to ensure continued

improvement!

Our business culture and business practices ensure we are making a meaningful contribution to the quality of the local and global environment to ensure the following:

• We drive continual improvement and innovation across both existing and new business developments

• We further develop our evaluation systems to ensure clear monitoring of all our environmental aspects and impact

• We continue to challenge our objectives and implement further improvements plans

Orangebox has always been at the forefront of environmental awareness andwastheveryfirstUKofficefurniture manufacturer to achieve ISO 14001.

We are fully committed to continually improving our systems and processes to assureourcustomersthatspecificstandards are achieved in the design, manufacture and supply of our products.

Furthermore, we aim to provide products which are safe, do not harm people or the environment and meet the purpose for which they are supplied.

Thesesystemsandprocessesarecontrolled and measured in accordance to the requirements of BS EN 14001:2007, BSEN9001:2008andFSC-STD-40-004.

Smart Design Orangebox’s in-house design team are committed to ensuring that our future growth comes from products and services that are focused on being as environmentally smart as they are commercially successful. These considerations are embedded throughout each new product development & we employ a variety of eco-design strategies to ensure

we’re not just ticking a box, some examples being…• Designing robust and attractive products that maximise their potential useful lives• Maximising the amount of recycled & recyclable materials wherever possible• Using Finite Element Analysis software to help optimise material usage• Design for disassembly-Products which can be broken down quickly and easily to help ensure recycling of components is economically viable• De-materialisation & light-weighting • Marking all our large parts with material identifiers to aid in their recyclingTo us, good design is a lot like good food; to get great results, just keep things simple and use the very best ingredients possible. So more often than not, we’re aiming to stick to the old adage “less is more” & looking to get the most amount of value from the least amount of material.

Cradle to Cradle also considers how the materials invested in our products can be reused through biological or technical cycles. Our ultimate aim is to eliminate the concept of waste through better consideration of what we use in our products and how they can be most effectively recovered and reused in the future.

We also believe in publishing environmental information to our customers with clarity and honesty so they are better able to make informed decisions, using FIRA’s carbon foot-printing tool across our entire portfolio. And although much of our smart-design methodology is focused upon resource efficiency, we also think some bigger thinking is required. This has led us to start adapting our business toward Circular Economy thinking; striving further to facilitate closed loop cycles of use & adopting a more systems thinking approach.

Our experience with working to the Cradle to Cradle design protocol has taught us a lot about only using ‘safe’ materials, whose chemical ingredients pose no significant harm to users of the product or to our natural ecosystems.

Smart ManufacturingChanging the way we manufacture not only creates opportunities for growth and revitalisation but enables us to respond with greater speed and agility to the customers’ individual requirements!Orangebox continuously develops processes to further minimize negative environmental impacts and conserve energy and natural resources where possible.• Process optimisation is embraced within every

department from production to manufacturing through to point of sale and thereafter.• Orangebox has embraced ‘Just in time’ production methodology to all of its operations where products are made to order ensuring there is no absolute stock.• Quality Assurance developments: Continuous developments with regards to the close monitoring of our Quality Assurance systems to ensure fewer mistakes and full compliance to ISO 9001.• Transportation improvements• Purpose built trailers to minimise transit• damage with minimal packaging• CNC Fabric cutters: to maximise yields• Great housekeeping maintenance has been adopted across all departments.

Our ultimate aim is to eliminate the concept of waste through better consideration of what we use in our products and how they can be most effectively recovered and reused

in the future.

CertifiedTimberTheworld’ssecondlargestsourceofgreenhousegas emissions derives from deforestation....at Orangebox we do all we can to ensure all our timber comes from sustainable sources.

A wide variety of our products involve the use of timber in their construction...table tops, chair frames, seat shells for example. Most of our wood we use is solid beech, birch plywood and MDF (mediumdensityfibreboard).

BeingFSC&PEFCcertifiedmeanswearefullycompliant to the highest social and environmental standards.

From the very start we have always sourced our timber from sustainable European sources, giving our customers added assurance that the timber used comes from the most responsible suppliers.

Currently100%ofourtimberiscertifiedtooneof the schemes noted above.

Toclarifywhatiscertifiedwithinourproductportfolio we have individually labelled each of the productsin our price-list, more information on FSC and PEFC can also be downloaded from our website www.orangebox.com

MaterialsPackagingOrangebox packaging uses approximately 85% recycled stock to manufacture the cardboard boxes we use. These boxes are 100% recyclable.

Where possible we utilise our tailgate delivery service, boxes are then immediately returned to our facility for additional cycles of use. We aim to circulate the boxes through 6 - 8 use phases in order to maximise their usefulness. When the boxes can no longer provide the level of protection required they are bundled onsite and sent for recycling through the appropriate waste stream.

On average we recycle 1.5 tons of cardboard per weekvia this process of re-use and recycle.

Recycling Scheme

Our primary aim here is to provide a simple & cost effective service to our customers that ensures we minimize & ideallyeliminatesanylandfill.

Our latest products comply with the Cradle 2 Cradle concept and aim to reuse the recycled materials in new products in apermanentcycle.Thisisgenuinerecycling where we retain the value of the original materials as opposed to most “downcycling” where a plastic part becomes a bag or someother low value item, whicharesubsequentlylandfilled.

We have a waste carrier’s license and are subject to inspection by the Environment Agency.

At Orangebox we take environmentalissues very seriously, so we can provide a non-profitmakingtakebackservicewhichwe think is a simple, collaborative solution for everyone in support of sustainability.

OrangeboxmanufactureofficechairsinSouth Wales and provide a product take back service for customers who order new products from us.

Once we have delivered the new products we collect the unwanted chairs (not desks or storage) & return them to our factory. We charge £10 per unit for this service.

On returning the products to our factory we segregate them and decide on 3 routes:

1. Donate good products to local charities, if we know of a requirement.

2. Arrange for them to be reused via another recycling company.

3. Disassemble the products, segregate the parts and dispose of them via our local recycling partner.

• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemicals that have a high vapor pressure at ordinary room temperature. They have harmful environmental effects when they chemically interact with oxides of nitrogen and sunlight to form ground-level ozone.

• We have used water based glues since 2001• Our VOC emissions come from di-isocyanate & release agent used in the foam moulding process

and we have virtually eliminated these over the last 5 years.• The legal limit is 100g/cubic metre• In 2013, we introduced new release agent - 18% voc vs 95% & consumption reduced by 50%
