  • SAVING THE PLANET THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Environmental problems are highly complex and multifaceted, which need to be addressed with interdisciplinary approaches. The NUS Environmental Engineering programme emphasizes the application of fundamental principles to analyse such problems and devise effective solutions within an overall framework of sustainable development.

The four-year B.Eng. (Environmental Engineering) programme provides you with the technical rigour of an engineering degree combined with scientific know-how and environmental insights. Through our approach, you will receive a comprehensive learning experience and enjoy greater flexibility in your choice of career, whether tackling the challenges of climate change, or developing innovative technologies to manage our natural resources.

  • DOMAIN AREAS

The specialisation in “Digitalisation in Urban Infrastructure” will help you address questions such as how to use digital technologies, data science, robotics and automation to make cities more efficient, more responsive, more sustainable, and more resilient? What differences do smart cities make to the urban fabric?

Focus on product design, production processes, and infrastructures to minimise anthropogenic impacts to global climate and to enhance cities’ resilience and adaptation to the effects of climate change.

Focus on development and implementation of effective air quality control and monitoring strategies, which is a global challenge for sustainable urban and industrial development.

Focus on environmentally-friendly sustainable development from scientific, technological, management, engineering, social and economic aspects.

Focus on technologies and processes for water and used water treatment and water quality enhancement, techniques and strategies for water quality monitoring, assessment and management, and resource recovery.

Focus on technology solutions for water reclamation and reuse, public health and social considerations, project planning and economics.

Focus on advanced concept of solid waste management, and in-depth knowledge on principles of design, construction, operation and maintenance of various treatment and disposal facilities along with engineering, institutional, legal and financial infrastructures.

Emphasis on a synopsis of the state of the planet, understanding the challenges faced in energy and environment, and strategies in implementing alternative energy sources for promoting a sustainable environment.

CAREER PROSPECTSYour training will give you the solid foundation that will enable you to become a high-level specialist working in all sectors of environmental engineering. Our programme also fosters a broad and global outlook, so that you will be ready for careers in multidisciplinary fields, being equally adept at policymaking, technopreneuship or leadingestablished multinational companiesand government authorities.

Singapore’s many planned large-scale infrastructure projects and increasing interest in climate change and sustainable development will continue to shape demand for our graduates.

The potential career opportunities for our graduates are:

    • Public Sector Engineers: Involved in developing policy and standards for the profession and general public.

    • Environmental Consultants: Ensure that environmental regulations are being met during the construction of a roadway, factory, or any other structure that is required to meet these regulations.

    • Health & Safety Engineers: Work in diverse settings including manufacturing, technology, pharmaceuticals, public facilities and utilities, to safeguard public’s safety on air pollution control, industrial hygiene, toxic materials control, and land management issues.

  • Valerie Khoo Pei Yi – EVE 2018Analyst, Environmental Resources Management (ERM)

This programme has given me a wide range of opportunities to explore my interest in this field. My internship with Veolia made me realise that the knowledge acquired in NUS was really relevant to the industry.

Algernon Hong – EVE 2014Senior Engineer, Housing & Development Board (HDB)

We must constantly wear our thinking hats to innovate and introduce new digital technologies and systems to improve our work. The academic rigour, leadership opportunities and real life experiences received at NUS have truly stood me in good stead to prepare for the challenges at work and in life!
