NeuGen Plus is a natural ester dielectric fluid for use in transformers that is derived from renewable feedstocks. NeuGen Plus is a highly stable natural ester oil with excellent electrical, chemical and physical properties.

NeuGen Plus is more than a green alternative to mineral oil. NeuGen Plus is Biolectric’s second generation dielectric fluid that has been developed for extreme operating environments and applications requiring greater fire safety.

The environmentally friendly and non-toxic components used in the production of NeuGen Plus combined with its high flash point means personnel involved in the use of the oil have a safer working environment.

The use of dielectric fluid is dictated by engineering design and the information in this Technical Data Sheet is intended to support assessment of suitability of use for individual applications.

Electrical PropertiesDielectric strength is a major parameter when choosing dielectric liquids for the use in oil-fi lled electrical apparatus. NeuGen Plus has dielectric strength comparable to that of mineral oil in terms of both the AC and lightning impulse breakdown voltages.

As a natural ester oils, NeuGen Plus is a suitable dielectric fl uid because it;

Convection PropertiesHeat transfer in a transformer is realised via thermal conductivity and convection. Convection represents all of the properties which led to the heat transfer by fluid displacement.

ViscosityKinematic viscosity is the most influential parameter for heat transfer.

The viscosity of dielectric coolants within the range of normal operating temperatures is important because it can impact both the cooling and performance of some internal components, such as internal load tap changers. Viscosity is the measure of the resistance of a fluid to flow.

Water SolubilityAs a natural ester oil, NeuGen Plus can hold considerably more water than mineral oil. Because of the difference in saturation levels, ester fl uids can absorb more water than mineral oil, and have a greater paper drying ability. At elevated temperatures, ester fl uids can undergo hydrolysis, consuming available water from the paper, thereby reducing the water damage potential, and improving paper ageing characteristics.

When comparing NeuGen Plus to mineral oil, use percentage saturation to enable direct comparisons.

Fire and SafetyNeuGen Plus is a natural ester Class K dielectric fluid and classified as self- extinguishing.

Whilst NeuGen Plus is miscible with mineral oil, contamination above 7% of mineral oil will lower the fire point below required limits.

Environmental ConsiderationsThe cost of any oil spill goes beyond penalties and clean-up costs; it is the contamination of soil and waterways that poses the serious concern.

In contrast to traditional oils, the materials used in the manufacture of NeuGen Plus are far more environmentally benign. NeuGen Plus is rated as non-toxic and is >95% biodegradable.

Operational Considerations

Miscibility with Mineral Oil and Other Natural EstersNeuGen Plus is miscible with mineral oil and other natural ester oils making it suitable for retro-fill purposes.

When retro-filling, it is impossible to remove all oil from a transformer’s internal winding and cellulose insulation. Over time the remaining oil will leach out into the replacement oil which may impact on performance.

Biolectric recommends including Flash and Fire point testing as part of annual monitoring programs when retro-filling transformers.

Compatibility with Materials of Transformer Construction Through testing to ASTM D3455 in an air rich environment, none of the commonly used materials were compromised by NeuGen Plus. Biolectric recommends the use of a high quality Buna N material to minimise the effects of the degradation of low quality Buna on oil quality results.

Service LifeBoth mineral and vegetable oils are susceptible to oxidation. Both fl uids oxidise differently and therefore the same standards are generally not accepted as references.

The IEC Standard 62770 for the use of natural ester fl uids in transformer applications defi nes specifi c methods and limit values as well as relevant control parameters when it comes to oxidation stability.
