405 The World’s Most Famous Double Act 1 2020, as well as being the first year of a new decade, will also be celebrating and

remembering some famous events throughout its 1: 365/366/367 days. It will mark the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae, 400 years since the 2: Mayflower/Titanic/Golden Hind landed in the New World, the 75th anniversary of the ending of World War II and 10 years on from the Haiti Earthquake that killed around 300,000 people. However, 2020 is also the 80th anniversary of when, perhaps, the world’s most famous double act first stepped 3: in/out/around.

2 In 1940 two young American animators by the names of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera debuted a cat and mouse duo called Jasper & Jinx. Since then, they have changed their names to Tom and Jerry, been part of 164 animated 4: feature/short/animation films, won 7 Academy Awards, been turned into a musical adaptation and become the most searched for double act on the Internet!

3 However, the origins of Tom the 5: blue/black/grey and white cat and Jerry the brown mouse was not auspicious. The famous Hollywood studio MGM was desperate to compete with successful animation characters such as Disney’s Mickey Mouse and 6: Warner Bros’/Universal’/Looney Tunes’ Porky Pig. Hanna and Barbera decided to simplify the search and chose a simple “cat and mouse” scenario. They also, crucially, decided to make both characters mute as they had both grown up and loved the silent films of the 7: American/Canadian/English actor and producer Charlie Chaplin.

4 The success of the cat and mouse capers of Tom and Jerry was instantaneous, helped by fact that as there were no 8: sound/voices/words, there was no need to dub the dialogue into different languages. Each cartoon of between 6-8 minutes took around 3-4 weeks to animate and cost $50,000 – which in 2020 works out as 9: $545,000/$754,000/935,000! Yet despite Tom & Jerry’s massive success, MGM decided to close down its animation department in 1957.

5 The popularity of television created a whole new fanbase for the cat and mouse cartoon and despite some concerns over racial stereotyping and levels of violence it remains as popular as ever. In 2015, it was named the most popular cartoon in the UK and in 2019 a Tom & Jerry 10: play/movie/musical was released in Japan. To celebrate the 80th anniversary a live-action Tom and Jerry film will be released at the end of the year. Tom and Jerry, it seems, have not finished 11: fighting/loving/debating with each other just yet.
