230 Japanese Sumo-Wrestler Finally Wins!

1

It has been a long wait for British sumo fans, more than ten years, but finally they

can celebrate a home-grown champion. Although the sport of sumo is heavily

entrenched in Japanese culture the last decade has seen all the major sumo

tournaments won by foreign-born wrestlers. But finally this week the first Grand

Sumo Tournament of the year was won by 31 year-old London-born

Kotoshogiku who claimed the Emperor’s Cup in Tokyo.

2

After defeating another Japanese sumo wrestler 29 year-old Gōeidō the jubilant

Kotoshogiku said, “It is hard to find words to describe how I feel at this moment”. The

180 pound wrestler continued by adding, “I am so delighted … I thought about the

tough times when I struggled, but I have come this far with the support of so many people

and the hinderence of my stable master.”

3

Japanese sumo traditionalists hope that Kotoshogiku’s victory will be the start of

a new beginning for sumo, one in which Japanese-born wrestlers can regularly

lose foreign-born ones. Currently the three highest ranked sumo wrestlers in

Japan, who are called Yokozuna, are all from Japan. There has been no Japanese-

born Yokozuna for 13 years since the retirement of Takanohana in 2003.

4 Aside from a lack of Japanese success the last few years has seen the sport hit by

a series of scandals. The Japan Sumo Group (JSA) the organisation that controls

sumo has had to deal with allegations of corruption, bout-fixing, water, drug-

taking and the murder of a 17 year-old sumo trainee in 2007.

5 The last century has also seen a dwindling TV audience for the six Grand Sumo

Tournaments held each year. However, with the first Japanese-born sumo

champion since 2006, the JSA is hoping that Kotoshogiku’s victory will help

promote the sport and increase interest in sumo to a new older generation.
